Abstract

Charles Leven and Michael Sykuta have a constricted idea of discriminatory attitudes and practices pertinent to lending. These two authors furthermore are not skillful in choosing the parameters and controls needed to enable their model to achieve validity. They have a way of making their assumptions and propositions hazy through the adoption of circuitous statistical techniques that the subject matter, which is discrimination, begins to escape their grasp. These are errors of methodology that impair the validity of their basic contentions.

65. Research on a Frame-Based Model of Reading Comprehension. Final Report.

Abstract

This report summarizes computational investigations of language comprehension based on Marvin Minsky's theory of frames, a recent advance in artifical intelligence theories about the representation of knowledge. The investigations discussed explored frame theory as a basis for text comprehension by implementing models of the theory and developing methods for exploiting its power; specifically they: (1) investigated how common-sense knowledge about the world can be embedded within a frame system, how that knowledge can be made "active" to model the intentions of a person planning a simple event, and the extent to which knowledge embedded in one particular frame system can be used to understand a grammatical construction called "noun, noun modification"; (2) implemented a testbed system that understands connected discourses using knowledge embedded in frames to "glue together" the various pieces of information conveyed by individual sentences; and (3) studied how natural language text of very simple sorts can be immediately analyzed into the meaning of that text by exploiting the structure of individual frames. The first chapter of the report outlines frame theory, discusses briefly how this theory is embedded within Frame Representation Language (FRL--a programing language), and summarizes the major results of the investigations. The remaining three chapters discuss the results in detail. (FL)

Abstract

This paper studies the relationship of artificial intelligence (AI) to the study of language and the representation of the underlying knowledge that supports the comprehension process. It develops the view that intelligence is based on the ability to use large amounts of diverse kinds of knowledge in procedural ways, rather than on the possession of a few general and uniform principles. Specific topics covered in the seven chapters include AI as the study of intelligent processes; frames as a unifying approach to representing knowledge; the structure of an AI theory; self-knowledge; control structures; the Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods of AI; the impact of AI on education, and controversies about educability and innateness.
