52. The determination of nitrification potentials of the amik plain common soil series

Abstract

In this study, the nitrification potentials of 5 soil series (Pasakoy, Akkerpic, Aktas, Kangallar, Baglama), common to the Amik Plain in Hatay/Turkey, have been determined. To this end, 2 different incubator trials were carried out, with and without fertilizers. Hence, the nitrification potentials of natural and fertilized soils have been determined. The ammonium results of fertilized trials which comprised the main objective of the study dropped to minimum levels after the 7th measurement day whereas the initial ammonium content of the studied soil (200 mg/kg), on the 11th day (3rd measurement day) was determined to be 3.7, 20.9, 4.1, 2.7 and 7.5 mg/kg, respectively. According to these results, the Kangallar series which rapidly dropped to an ammonium content of 2.7 mg/kg was determined to be that with the highest nitrification capacity. In addition, Akkerpic soil series was that with the lowest nitrification rate but the highest ammonium value (20.9 mg/kg) on the 11th measurement day. According to the study results, the nitrification potentials of the study areas have been determined to be high. Therefore, the regional soils and underground waters face the threat of nitrification, possibly damaging macro and micro living things and plants by nitrate compounds.

Smith Waterman Algorithm is a widely used tool in bioinformatics to align reads from aligning to a reference in whole genome sequencing. Mapping millions of sequences read from sequencing is a computationally expensive operation. Accuracy and performance are two important aspects of this process. FPGA based solutions are widely studied. In this paper we tried to achieve a better mapping accuracy for optimum alignment using quality scores of the bases of read sequences while keeping the performance high. We are offering a new Smith Waterman processing unit and systolic array based on quality scores.

Abstract

Effects of six tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yields were evaluated for a clay soil (Typic Haploxererts) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions in a three year study (2006-2009). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized-block with three replications. Treatments were: conventional tillage with residue incorporated (CT1), conventional tillage with residue burned (CT2), reduced tillage with heavy tandem disc harrow (RT1), reduced tillage with rotary tiller (RT2), reduced tillage with heavy tandem disc harrow for the first crop + no-tillage for the second crop (RNT), and no tillage (NT). The study was conducted in wheat-corn, wheat-soybean and wheat crop rotations. Dehydrogenase activity, soil respiration, mycorrhizal spore number, total organic carbon (TOC), and total N were determined at three depths (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm). The mycorrhizal spore number responded quite early to tillage practices. Significant tillage effects on TOC and total N were observed only at 0-10 cm depth. The TOC content was increased by NT, RT2, RNT and RT1 practices compared to the initial values at the same depth as 74%, 62%, 56%, and 50%, respectively. Dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and soil respiration were higher on the surface and decreased with depth. Abstract

A laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the denitrification capacity of the Doganci, Geçitkale, Akdeniz, Balikesir, Pamuklu. Zümrütköy and Türkmenköy that are widely distributed soil series of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Soils are placed in anaerobic jars (20 % initial O2, 80 % He) with addition of 300 mg kg-1 NO3-N. Produced gases (CO2, N2 and N2O) along with O2 consumption were determined by gas chromatography. Moreover, ammonium and nitrate concentration of the soils were measured at regular intervals. The measured O2 consumption and CO2 production values as parameters of biological activities revealed considerable differences among the soil series studied. The more rapid O 2 consumption and the higher CO2 production were determined in Balikesir, Zümrütköy and Türkmenköy soil series. Furthermore, O2 level in the anaerobic jar was immediately dropped in early measurement intervals and was about 0 % at the end of the last measurement, particularly above mentioned soil series. The Zümrü tköy soil series has higher CO2 production in all measurement periods than the others and reached 975 µg CO2 g dry soil -1 at the end of experiment where others vary from 257 to 745. The measurements of N2O and N2 gases revealed that the most of the denitrification product consists of N2. Additionally, the highest N2O and N2 productions were determined in the Balikesir series with 251 µg N2O-N g dry soil-1 and 498 µg N2-N g dry soil-1. When all series compared, there were significant differences for the production of N2 and N 2O production. Nitrate and ammonium analyses measured in relation to time, ammonium content was similar in all series, however, nitrate content significantly decreased according to the measurement period.

Abstract

The topologies of protein-protein interaction networks are uncertain and noisy. The network topology determines the reliability of computational knowledge acquired from noisy networks and can impose the deterministic and non-deterministic character of the resulting data. In this study, we analyze the effect of the network topology on Lyapunov exponents and its relationship with network stability. We define the methodology to convert the network data into signal data and obtain the Lyapunov exponents for a variety of networks. We then compare the Lyapunov exponent response and the stability results. Our technique can be applied to all types of network topologies as demonstrated with our experiments, conducted on both synthetic and real networks from public databases. For the first time, this article presents findings where Lyapunov exponents are evaluated under topological mutations and used for network analysis. Experimental results show that Lyapunov exponents have a strong correlation with network stability and both are correlatively affected by the network model. Hence we develop a novel coefficient, termed LEC, to measure the robustness of biological networks. LEC can be applied to real or synthetic biological networks rapidly. Results are a striking indication that the Lyapunov exponent is a potential candidate measure for network analysis.

65. Effects of different levels of crude protein and protease on nitrogen utilization, nutrient digestibility, and growth performance in growing pigs

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of crude protein (CP) and protease on nitrogen (N) utilization, nutrient digestibility, and growth performance in growing pigs. A total of six crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows were individually accepted in 1.2 m × 0.7 m × 0.96 m stainless steel metabolism cages. The pigs (average initial body weight of 27.91 ± 1.84 kg) randomly assigned to six diets with six weeks (6 × 6 Latin square design). The experiment was carried out in an environment with a temperature of 23 ± 1.5°C, a relative humidity of 83 ± 2.3% and a wind speed of 0.25 ± 0.03 m/s. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design with two levels of CP (15.3% or 17.1%) and three levels of protease (0 ppm, 150 ppm, or 300 ppm). The average daily gain and gain to feed ratio (G:F) tended to increase (p = 0.074) with increasing amounts of protease. The low CP level diet reduced (p < 0.050) urinary and fecal N concentrations, the total N excretion in feces, and increased (p < 0.050) N retention. Different protease levels in the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) at N intake, but supplementation of the diets with 300 ppm protease decreased (p < 0.050) the N concentration in urine and feces and tended to increase (p = 0.061) the percentage of N retention retained of the total N intake. The dietary CP level did not affect (p > 0.050) the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter, digestible energy (DE), and metabolic energy (ME), but diet supplementation with 300 ppm protease showed higher (p < 0.050) ATTD of DE and ME than in the protease-free diet. Therefore, a low protein diet with protease could improve the utilization of nitrogen, thereby reducing the negative effect of N excretion into the environment while maintaining or increasing growth performance compared to a high protein diet.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of replacing soybean meal with perilla seed meal (PSM) on growth performance, proximate composition of meat, meat quality, and fatty acids composition of meat in broilers. A total of 60 one-day-old chicks of ROSS 308 (initial body weight of 44.8 ± 0.4 g) were randomly allotted to four treatment groups (15 replicate cages with 1 broilers per cage) in a period of 5 weeks. Dietary treatments included control (CON) basal diet (corn-soybean meal-based diets) and test diets in which PSM was included at 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), or 2% (T3) to gradually replace soybean meal. At the end of experiment, all broilers were slaughtered for collecting breast and thigh meat. At 5 weeks, T2 and T3 treatment groups had higher (p < 0.05) body weights than CON and T1 treatment groups. Weight gain was increased (p < 0.05) in T2 and T3 treatment groups. Feed intake was decreased (p < 0.05) in T3 treatment group. Broilers in T2 treatment group had lower (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio than those in other treatment groups. In proximate composition of breast meat, there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in moisture and ash. Fat composition of breast meat was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in T2 and T3 treatment groups. Regarding meat quality, broilers fed T3 diet had higher (p < 0.05) water holding capacity than those fed other diets. Regarding fatty acids composition of thigh meat, broilers fed T3 diet had higher (p < 0.05) linolenic acid than those fed other diets. In conclusion, soybean meal replaced by 2% perilla seed meal in broiler diet can improve growth performance, meat quality, and fatty acids composition of thigh meat in broilers. Perilla seed meal can be a lot of potential alternatives feedstuff for soybean meal in this study.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different organic residues (OR) (e.g.. wheat straw corn straw and tobacco residues) on nitrogen mineralization and denitrification loss (N2O-N) using application rates recommended to local farmers. Nitrate and ammonium analyses were carried out on periodically collected soil samples. In-situ denitrification loss was determined using the acetylene inhibition technique (AIT). The results revealed that OR application increased N mineralization significantly. In the favorable conditions for nitrification and intensive mineralization period. NO3-N accumulation at 0-60 cm depth peaked at 163.0, 177.7 and 226.6 kg N ha-1 in plots with wheat straw, corn straw and tobacco waste, respectively. In-situ denitrification measurements showed that intensive mineralization, depending on temperature and humidity conditions, significantly increased denitrification losses. The denitrification values measured showed a variation between 7.58 and 17.40 kg N2O-N ha-1. The results also showed that the effect of organic substrates on N loss via denitrification was highly dependent on the type of organic substrate used, and the C/N ratio of the organic substrate played an important role in N loss by denitrification.

68. Effects of exogenous emulsifier supplementation on growth performance, energy digestibility, and meat quality in broilers

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous emulsifier supplementation on growth performance, energy digestibility, and meat quality in broilers. A total of 60 Ross 308 broilers were treated for two weeks. The three dietary treatments were: (CON) basal diet; (T1) basal diet + 0.1% exogenous emulsifier, and (T2) basal diet + 0.2% exogenous emulsifier. In Period 1 (0–7 days), broilers in the T2 group showed significantly higher body weight gain (BWG) (p < 0.05) and broilers in the T1 and T2 treatment groups had significantly lower feed conversion ratios (FCR) (p < 0.05). In Period 2 (8–14 days), broilers in the T2 treatment group had significantly higher feed intake (FI) (p < 0.05). Therefore, in this experiment (from days 0 to 19), BWG and FCR were affected (p < 0.05) by the T1 and T2 treatments. Additionally, the T1 and T2 treatments with added exogenous emulsifier in the broiler feed showed significantly higher energy digestibility (p < 0.05) than the CON treatment. Broilers fed the T2 diet had higher water-holding capacity (WHC) (p < 0.05) and cooking loss than the broilers fed the CON and T1 diets. Moreover, the shearing force in the meat was decreased (p < 0.05) in broilers fed the T2 diet. In conclusion, supplementation with exogenous emulsifier to broiler diets improved growth performance, energy digestibility, and meat quality. The optimal amount of exogenous emulsifier supplementation requires further investigation.

Abstract

Detection of estrus is an essential factor as a method of successful breeding in the sow. As increasing the adaption of the information and communication technology (ICT) into swine industry, this study focuses on a possibility and quantification of standing time, vulva and body temperature as methods of estrus detection, comparing each time and temperature in estrus and non-estrus period, and analyzing each success rate of new and existing methods. Ultrasonic sensor array and digital infrared thermography were used to evaluate whether new methods such as standing time and number, and vulva and skin temperature can be replaced, or these methods can be quantifiable in estrus period. Ultrasonic sensor array was installed beside the stall and digital infrared thermography was placed in the rear of sow to collect the dates of sow in estrus and non-estrus period. This study showed total standing time, number and number over 10 minutes, and vulva temperature of the sow in estrus period were increased (p < 0.05) compared with those of sow in non-estrus period, respectively. Detection of estrus using standing time and vulva temperature tended (p = 0.06) to increase the success rate when artificial insemination (AI) was performed. In conclusion, standing time and vulva temperature increased when estrus happened. Success rate of AI of sow using these methods showed an increasing trend. Therefore, existing method using the naked eye can be replaced to new method such as vulvar temperature and standing time when detecting the estrus.

Abstract

Background: The study aimed to investigate whether timolol-treatment has a beneficial effect on pentose phosphate pathway enzyme activities such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) enzyme activities and cAMP level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats in pancreatic tissues Methods: Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) in 3-month old male Wistar rats. The diabetic rats were treated with timolol (5 mg/kg body weight, for 12 weeks) while the control group received saline. Enzyme activities were determined in pancreas tissue. To support our results, we performed in silico calculations, using Protein Data Bank structures. Results: Timolol treatment of STZ-induced diabetic rats had no noteworthy effect on high blood-glucose levels. However, this treatment induced activities of G6PD and 6PGDH in diabetic rats. Timolol treatment significantly increased cAMP level in diabetic pancreatic tissue. We found that timolol cannot bind strongly to either G6PD or 6PGD, but there is a relatively higher binding affinity to adenylyl cyclase, responsible for cAMP production, serving as a regulatory signal via specific cAMP-binding proteins. Conclusions: Our data point out that timolol treatment has beneficial effects on the antioxidant defence mechanism enzymes in the pancreas of STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Abstract

The influence of severe plastic deformation on wear properties of Al-5wt.%Grp and Al-5wt.%B4Cp reinforced aluminum matrix composites was studied. Al matrix composites were produced by solid state processing via powder metallurgy route that provides good incorporation and distribution of the reinforcement particles in the matrix. Wear tests were performed by dry sliding using a pin on disk wear tester. Scanning electron microscope was used to examine worn surfaces to study the wear mechanism. Severely deformed specimens exhibited better wear resistance due to the increase of surface hardness of both Al-5wt.%Grp and Al-5wt.%B4Cp composites. Al-B4Cp reinforced composite has higher hardness value through the excellent hardness of B4C particulates. Al-Grp reinforced composites exhibited better wear resistance due to the solid lubricant effect of Gr particulates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

99. The Effect of Shielding Gas Composition on Microstructure and Abrasive Wear Resistance Fabricated with PTA Alloying Technique

In this study, SAE 1020 steel surfaces were separately alloyed with preplaced high-carbon-ferro-chromium (FeCr), ferro-molybdenum (FeMo) and ferro-titanium (FeTi) powders by using plasma transferred arc (PTA) heat source. By using three different types of shielding gas compositions during the alloying process, the study investigated the effects of modified shielding gas composition on the microstructure, hardness, and abrasive wear resistance of specimens. The most homogenous microstructure and the highest wear resistance was obtained in the gaseous environment which included 3% of H2. Increasing this rate to 5 % in the shielding gaseous composition caused gaps and pores in the microstructure and caused a decrease in the wear resistance. The x-ray examinations of the specimens identified ferro-molybdenum and ferro-titanium solid solutions, ferrit, austenite and martensite phases in their microstructure as the first phase and FeC, Cr7C3, Cr3C2, Fe3C, Fe7C3, MoC and TiC phases as the second phase. Abstract

Powierzchnie stalowe SAE 1020 były oddzielnie stopowane z wcześniej nałożonymi proszkami wysokowęglowego żelazo- chromu (FeCr), żelazo-molibdenu (FeMo) i żelazo-tytanu (FeTi) za pomocą techniki PTA. Dzięki zastosowaniu trzech różnych typów gazu osłonowego w trakcie procesu wytwarzania stopu, badano wpływ modyfikacji składu gazu osłonowego na mikro- strukturę, twardość i odporność na ścieranie próbek. Najbardziej jednorodną mikrostrukturę i najwyższą odporność na ścieranie otrzymuje się w środowisku gazowym, które zawiera 3% H2. Zwiększenie zawartości H2 do 5% w składzie gazu osłonowego spowodowało powstanie luk i porów w mikrostrukturze oraz spadek odporności na ścieranie. Badania dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej próbek pozwoliły zidentyfikować roztwory stałe żelazo-molibdenu i żelazo-tytanu, ferryt, austenit i martenzyt jako pierwszą fazę w ich mikrostrukturze, oraz FeC. Cr7C3, G3C2, Fe3C, Fe7C3. MoC i TiC jako drugą fazę. W związku z tym stwierdzono, że zmiany w składu gazu osłonowego w procesie stopowania wpłynęły na mikrostrukturę próbek i właściwości ścierne.

Abstract

Prediction of bacterial virulent proteins is critical for vaccine development and understanding of virulence mechanisms in pathogens. For this purpose, a number of feature encoding methods based on sequences and evolutionary information of a given protein have been proposed and applied with some classifier algorithms so far. In this paper, we performed composition moment vector (CMV), which includes information about both composition and position of amino acid in the protein sequence to predict bacterial virulent proteins. The tests were validated in three different independent datasets. Experimental results show that CMV feature encoding method leads to better classification performance in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, f-measure and the Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) scores on diverse classifiers.
