- Abstract
The fabrication process of concrete in the construction has caused carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere subsequently increases carbon footprint. Meanwhile, large sum of agricultural waste are generated such as palm oil fuel ash (POFA) and eggshell powder (ESP). Incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials by capitalizing agricultural waste into concrete regarded as sustainable effort to reduce environmental impact. In this study, foamed concrete (FC-POFA-ES) was incorporated with 20% of POFA, 5% and 10% of ESP. Beam specimens 20 POFA 10 ESP has +14% and 20 POFA 05 ESP +13% higher ultimate load capacity but more severe cracking compared to control mix. The mix proportion of 20 POFA 10 ESP has better overall strength compared with control beam from experimental works. Therefore, it can be concluded the addition of POFA and ES powder has potential to be explored as cement replacement in foamed concrete structure

- Abstract
Aim Previous studies reported conflicting evidence on the effects of obesity on outcomes after gastrointestinal surgery. The aims of this study were to explore the relationship of obesity with major postoperative complications in an international cohort and to present a metaanalysis of all available prospective data. Methods This prospective, multicentre study included adults undergoing both elective and emergency gastrointestinal resection, reversal of stoma or formation of stoma. The primary end-point was 30-day major complications (Clavien–Dindo Grades III–V). A systematic search was undertaken for studies assessing the relationship between obesity and major complications after gastrointestinal surgery. Individual patient meta-analysis was used to analyse pooled results. Results This study included 2519 patients across 127 centres, of whom 560 (22.2%) were obese. Unadjusted major complication rates were lower in obese vs normal weight patients (13.0% vs 16.2%, respectively), but this did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.863) on multivariate analysis for patients having surgery for either malignant or benign conditions. Individual patient meta-analysis demonstrated that obese patients undergoing surgery formalignancy were at increased risk of major complications (OR 2.10, 95% CI 1.49–2.96, P < 0.001), whereas obese patients undergoing surgery for benign indications were at decreased risk (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.46–0.75, P < 0.001) compared to normal weight patients. Conclusions In our international data, obesity was not found to be associated with major complications following gastrointestinal surgery. Meta-analysis of available prospective data made a novel finding of obesity being associated with different outcomes depending on whether patients were undergoing surgery for benign or malignant disease.

Electrical switching of nanophotonic structural color elements is a promising approach towards addressable color switching pixels for next generation reflective displays. However, electrical switching between the primary colors to colorless near-white state remains a challenge. Here, we present a reversible electrical switching approach, relying on the electrocoagulation of Ag nanoparticles between silicon nanostructures that support Mie resonances. The electrodeposited Ag nanoparticles enable the excitation of the hybrid plasmon-Mie resonance as supported on Ag-silicon nanostructures, resulting in a large spectral transformation. Importantly, this process is reversible. This device design outperforms other designs in terms of electrotonic color control since it is highly stable and reliable for use in high-resolution reflective displays, such as colored electronic papers and smart display glass, where the combination is scalable to other nanostructure designs and electrolytic solutions.

Influence of thermal annealing on electroluminescence (EL) from multiple-Si-implanted silicon nitride films has been investigated. A reduced injection current and an enhanced EL intensity have been obtained simultaneously by increasing the annealing temperature, which results in a higher EL quantum efficiency. In addition, four emission bands are identified, and their peak energies, intensities, and full widths at half maxima are found to change with annealing temperature. A model is proposed to illustrate the carrier transport, the mechanisms of the four emission bands, and the evolution of the EL bands with annealing as well. The two major bands and the minor ultraviolet band are explained in terms of the recombination of the injected electrons in either the silicon dangling-bond (≡Si
0 ) states or the nitride conduction band with the injected holes in either the band tail states above the nitride valence band or the valence band itself, while the minor near infrared band is attributed to the Si nanocrystals formed in the thin film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
p-n and n-p junctions based on the p-type La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) and the n-type Zn0.8Co0.2Al0.01O (ZCAO) have been fabricated on silicon substrates via pulsed laser deposition. Both LSMO and ZCAO thin layers deposited on Si had good remanent magnetic characteristics at room temperature. The metal-semiconductor transition temperature (Tp) of the ZCAO/LSMO n-p junction is lower than that of the pure LSMO layer, which is due to the influence of the top ZCAO layer. The low-field s±3 kOed magnetoresistance (LFMR) value of the ZCAO/LSMO n-p junction is about -15% at 80 K, which is lower than that of the pure LSMO layer on Si (-21%). As deposited on top of ZCAO/Si, the LSMO layer has no LFMR property. The LSMO/ZCAO p-n junction has good current flow versus voltage (I-V) property with a threshold voltage of about 1.5 V at 80-300 K, which is very similar to normal Si-based p-n diode. Its I-V characteristics cannot be modulated by low external magnetic fields. However, the ZCAO/LSMO n-p junction demonstrated a nonlinear I-V behavior, and its current flow can be modulated by low external magnetic fields. The resistance variation of the ZCAO/LSMO n-p junction was -15% under forward bias voltages as the external magnetic field varied from 0 to 3 kOe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al
2 O3 -doped La0.7 Sr0.3 MnO3 (Al2 O3 -LSMO) thin films were deposited on Si(111) substrate via a pulsed laser deposition. The deposited Al2 O3 -LSMO composite thin films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electro- and magneto-transport measurements. The main phase in the Al2 O3 -LSMO composite films was the perovskite phase. Texturelike microstructure was observed in the Al2 O3 -LSMO composite films while the average grain size remained almost unchanged compared to the pure samples. The metal-insulator transition temperature decreased as a result of the addition of Al2 O3 and further reduced with increasing Al2 O3 content. A maximum low field mangetoresistance of ∼15% was achieved in the 2/20 Al2 O3 -LSMO thin films, which could be well explained in terms of the grain boundary tunneling effect. The composition of the composite thin films can be easily tuned by adjusting the target composition. This method is believed to be applicable to exploring the combinations of other manganites and insulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are effector lymphocytes of the innate immune system that are known for their ability to kill transformed and virus-infected cells. NK cells originate from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, and studies on mouse models have revealed that NK cell development is a complex, yet tightly regulated process, which is dependent on both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The development of NK cells can be broadly categorized into two phases: lineage commitment and maturation. Efforts to better define the developmental framework of NK cells have led to the identification of several murine NK progenitor populations and mature NK cell subsets, each defined by a varied set of cell surface markers. Nevertheless, the relationship between some of these NK cell subsets remains to be determined. The classical approach to studying both NK cell development and function is to identify the transcription factors involved and elucidate the mechanistic action of each transcription factor. In this regard, recent studies have provided further insight into the mechanisms by which transcription factors, such as ID2, FOXO1, Kruppel-like factor 2, and GATA-binding protein 3 regulate various aspects of NK cell biology. It is also becoming evident that the biology of NK cells is not only transcriptionally regulated but also determined by epigenetic alterations and posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression by microRNAs. This review summarizes recent progress made in NK development, focusing primarily on transcriptional regulators and their mechanistic actions.

- Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are innate lymphoid cells with antitumor functions. Using an N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU)-induced mutagenesis screen in mice, we identified a strain with an NK cell deficiency caused by a hypomorphic mutation in the Bcl2 (B cell lymphoma 2) gene. Analysis of these mice and the conditional deletion of Bcl2 in NK cells revealed a nonredundant intrinsic requirement for BCL2 in NK cell survival. In these mice, NK cells in cycle were protected against apoptosis, and NK cell counts were restored in inflammatory conditions, suggesting a redundant role for BCL2 in proliferating NK cells. Consistent with this, cycling NK cells expressed higher MCL1 (myeloid cell leukemia 1) levels in both control and BCL2-null mice. Finally, we showed that deletion of BIM restored survival in BCL2-deficient but not MCL1-deficient NK cells. Overall, these data demonstrate an essential role for the binding of BCL2 to BIM in the survival of noncycling NK cells. They also favor a model in which MCL1 is the dominant survival protein in proliferating NK cells.

Purpose – Malaysia is considered to be a relatively young country as compared to other older countries such as Japan, China and Australia in terms of the ageing population. However, until 2035, Malaysia will be in the ageing group countries as 15% of the entire population will be above 60 years of age. This situation is quite alarming as more and more ageing care centres will be required to fulfill the ongoing demands of the ageing population. The elderly care centres in Malaysia are categorised as public (sponsored by the government), private, and charity based that comes under religious centres. Currently, there are about 365 registered elderly care centres working in the main states of Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, two states of the East Malaysia. Due to the importance of ageing population issues, the present study is conducted to explore the demographics facet of Malaysian’s elderly care centres. The main reason behind that lies on the fact that many of these centres are still labelled as being not well equipped and lacking behind in trained staff, equipment and also suffering from severe financial constraints but some still capable of working on a sustainability basis. Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative Research Strategy has been adopted, and 28 centres throughout Malaysia are included in this study. About 18 Operators from different centres and 15 caregivers were interviewed to get the holistic view of ageing care and facilities in their respective centres. Findings – The results highlight that the majority of centres are not receiving any financial help from the government, and few centres are doing small business such as supplying consumable medical and non-medical items and providing renting and rehabilitation centres facilities to sustain. The caregivers are facing issues such as excess workload, less salary, peer conflicts and non-cooperative centre leadership. Originality/value – The present study may help to provide useful information to the policymakers, which enables them to formulate the strategies for ageing care centres in Malaysia. As this study provides insight of components that have an impact on the overall wellbeing of elderly care centres, hence, it could help the care services providers to act as a rising star for Malaysian’s social life comfort.

- Abstract
Clinical evidence links arterial calcification and cardiovascular risk. Finite-element modelling of the stress distribution within atherosclerotic plaques has suggested that subcellular microcalcifications in the fibrous cap may promote material failure of the plaque, but that large calcifications can stabilize it. Yet the physicochemical mechanisms underlying such mineral formation and growth in atheromata remain unknown. Here, by using three-dimensional collagen hydrogels that mimic structural features of the atherosclerotic fibrous cap, and high-resolution microscopic and spectroscopic analyses of both the hydrogels and of calcified human plaques, we demonstrate that calcific mineral formation and maturation results from a series of events involving the aggregation of calcifying extracellular vesicles, and the formation of microcalcifications and ultimately large calcification areas. We also show that calcification morphology and the plaque's collagen content - two determinants of atherosclerotic plaque stability - are interlinked.

- Abstract
© 2015 American Chemical Society.Over the past decades, many systematic process integration techniques have been developed for synthesizing resource conservation networks (RCNs). Automated Targeting Model (ATM) is one of the approaches that incorporates insight-based concept into mathematical optimization model to locate various targets for RCNs. However, in order to perform automated targeting, the quality values of process sinks and sources must be first identified and arranged in ascending or descending order. Therefore, for cases where the quality of process sinks and sources are given in a range and not fixed, the conventional ATM will not able to locate the targets accordingly. To overcome such limitation, a novel Floating Automated Targeting Model (FATM) is presented in this work. Two literature case studies are solved to illustrate the proposed approach.

A series of experiments and simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of hardness and toughness of ceramic on the ballistic performance of ceramic armour modules. The experiment was conducted using ceramics from 3M technical ceramic, using the tiles Grade T, T+, F and F+ with dimensions of 100 mm X 100 mm X 20 mm. These ceramic tiles were assessed using a simplified ceramic armour module consisting of the ceramic tile sandwiched between a cover plate and a backing plate. The test samples were made of either single tile module or multiple tile modules. They were tested against tungsten alloy long rod projectiles at a nominal velocity of 1250m/s. Experimental results showed that ballistic performance of the ceramic correlated with hardness but not fracture toughness, based on mass efficiency. Fracture toughness correlated instead with the damage radius in the ceramic. Simulation using LS-DYNA revealed that improved ballistic performance of the ceramic tiles was due to long dwell time. High fracture toughness of ceramics could suppress damage by tensile stress wave generated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The leucine aminopeptidase inhibitor, benzyloxycarbonyl-leucine-chloromethylketone (z-L-CMK), was found to be toxic and readily induce cell death in Jurkat T cells. Dose-response studies show that lower concentration of z-L-CMK induced apoptosis in Jurkat T cells whereas higher concentration causes necrosis. In z-L-CMK-induced apoptosis, both the initiator caspases (-8 and -9) and effector caspases (-3 and -6) were processed to their respective subunits. However, the caspases remained intact in z-L-CMK-induced necrosis. The caspase inhibitor, z-VAD-FMK inhibited z-L-CMK-mediated apoptosis and caspase processing but has no effect on z-L-CMK-induced necrosis in Jurkat T cells. The high mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) protein was found to be released into the culture medium by the necrotic cells and not the apoptotic cells. These results indicate that the necrotic cell death mediated by z-L-CMK at high concentrations is via classical necrosis rather than secondary necrosis. We also demonstrated that cell death mediated by z-L-CMK was associated with oxidative stress via the depletion of intracellular glutathione (GSH) and increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), which was blocked by N-acetyl cysteine. Taken together, the results demonstrated that z-L-CMK is toxic to Jurkat T cells and induces apoptosis at low concentrations, while at higher concentrations the cells die of necrosis. The toxic side effects in Jurkat T cells mediated by z-L-CMK are associated with oxidative stress via the depletion of GSH and accumulation of ROS. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Among the genus Aerodramus Oberholser 1912 ecological evidence and museum specimens support the existence of two wild species making 'white' edible nests: grey-rumped swiftlet Aerodramus inexpectatus (Hume, 1873), a species occurring on islands, rocky stacks and maritime cliffs from the Andaman Islands to the north-east coast of Borneo, and brown-rumped swiftlet A. fuciphagus (Thunberg, 1812), occurring at inland sites only in Borneo, but at inland and island localities in Sumatra, Java, and Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. Housefarm swiftlets, which make similar white nests, were first recorded as spontaneous occupiers of buildings in Java, Indonesia, in the late 19th century, presumably from A. fuciphagus stock. In Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, the first observations of nesting in buildings were made later, from 1931 to 1947. Subsequent human intervention has greatly expanded the numbers and range of house-farms, first in Java and elsewhere in Indonesia by fostering eggs in the nests of Linchi Swiftlets Collocalia linchi, and latterly by the use of recorded vocalisations to attract birds into purpose-made buildings. During the 20th and early 21st centuries, house-farm swiftlets and 'house-farming' have largely replaced wild colonies as sources of white nests. Previous genetic evidence based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has supported species level separation of the two wild white-nest species but more recent genetic studies have questioned this conclusion. The present study has focused on mitochondrial genetics with new samples of swiftlets from house-farms in Peninsular and Bornean Malaysia, and wild grey-rumped swiftlets Aerodramus inexpectatus on the islands of Mantanani Besar, Sabah, and Seringgis, Terengganu. GenBank data were used to extend comparisons to include house-farm swiftlet mtDNA from southern Thailand and Vietnam. Re-analysis of the three previous studies of genetic diversity in house-farm swiftlets coupled with the new supplementary data of mitochondrial cytochrome-b shows that the multiple maternal lineages observed within the house-farm swiftlets of Malaysia can also be detected more widely across the Southeast Asian region. In conclusion, we argue that housefarm swiftlets exhibit behavioural characters that could be considered evidence of domestication. We hope to see further studies using fuller genome sequencing to give improved insights into the phylogenetics of the progressive domestication of house-farm white-nest swiftlets. Abstract Purpose In a previous study, a new method was described using the sperm immobilization test (SIT) with computer‐aided sperm analysis (CASA). However, obtaining high‐quality sperm as needed was a known issue. Here, we compared the results of using frozen‐thawed sperm and fresh sperm for the SIT using the CASA method. Methods For the frozen‐thawed preparation, 500 μL of condensed semen and 500 μL of Sperm Freeze were mixed in a cryovial and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Density gradient centrifugation was used for the collection of motile sperm in both the fresh and frozen‐thawed sperm preparations. A total of 50 serum samples were prepared for both the fresh and frozen‐thawed sperm with each sample tested containing 10 μL of serum, 1 μL of either fresh or frozen motile sperm suspension, and 2 μL of complement. Sperm motilities were measured using CASA after a 1‐hour incubation period for both fresh and frozen‐thawed sperm. Results Both fresh and frozen‐thawed sperm reacted similarly when exposed to serum containing sperm‐immobilizing antibodies asserting the use of frozen‐thawed sperm for the diagnosis of immunological infertility. Conclusion These results suggest the possibility of using cryopreserved sperm for the SIT when fresh sperm is unavailable.

virus diseases ,digestive system diseases - Abstract
Vertically transmitted hepatitis B virus (HBV) usually causes chronic infection. While combined active-passive immunoprophylaxis in neonates of hepatitis B surface antigen-positive (HBsAg ) mothers at birth prevents vertical transmission, it is not yet clear whether neonates encounter the virus or its products in the absence of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). This study was undertaken to investigate HBV antigen-specific T-cell responses in vaccinated neonates of HBsAg+/HBeAg- mothers. Blood was collected from 46 HBsAg mothers and their neonates (subjects) as well as 24 age-matched controls. All neonates of HBsAg mothers received appropriate immunoprophylaxis, and HBsAg and hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) antibody titers were determined after completion of the vaccination course. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from infants at birth, 1 and 6 months of age were stimulated with recombinant HBsAg, hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) and mitogen, and interferon (IFN)-γ concentrations were determined by ELISA. HBsAg-induced production of IL-2, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-10 was assessed using a cytometric bead array kit on cells from 6-month-old neonates post-vaccination. All neonates were HBsAg and responded to vaccination. Increased IFN-γ production following HBcAg stimulation was seen in 30.4% of neonates born to HBsAg+/HBeAg- mothers. Subjects demonstrated significantly higher IL-2 production post-HBsAg stimulation, whereas IL-5, IL-6 and IL-10 cytokine responses were not significantly different. Almost one-third of uninfected neonates developed viral antigen-induced IFN-γ production, suggesting that they had been exposed to virions or viral derivatives. This encounter, however, did not impair their T-cell responses to vaccination. © 2010 CSI and USTC. All rights reserved.
