Abstract

The in-beam tests of two Si pixel type TRACE detectors have been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the possibility of identifying heavy-ion reactions products with mass A~10 at low kinetic energy, i.e., around 10 MeV. Two separate read-out chains, digital and analog, were used. The Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the identification matrices for the digitally processed part of the data. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained, however, the $\alpha$ particles contaminated significantly the recorded data in the lower energy part. Due to this effect, the identification of the light products ($^{7,6}$Li isotopes) could be possible down only to ~20 MeV, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206Pb +118 Sn system were measured at Elab = 1200 MeV using the PRISMA large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer. The experiment was conducted at laboratory angles around the grazing angle, covering an angular range of approximately 20°. The resulting differential and total cross sections, along with Q-value distributions for various neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels, are presented. The Q-value distributions suggest a transition from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic collision processes, particularly in channels involving nucleon transfers. The experimental results have been compared with GRAZING code calculations, showing good agreement for few-nucleon transfer channels, while channels with large nucleon transfers are underestimated, indicating the involvement of more complex processes. Abstract

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state single-photon-sensitive detectors more and more used in a large variety of applications, like in high-energy physics (HEP) and space experiments. Recently, one of the main requirements is to cover larger active areas, possibly with a reduced number of channels. In such a scenario, position-sensitive SiPMs have been developed, in which the interaction position is provided by the amplitudes (or charge) of a few output signals. This is commonly done at the single-chip level. Inspired by this concept, in this contribution, we developed a tile of $10\times 1$ SiPMs ( $\sim 3\times 3$ mm2 each) with two output channels, properly spaced to read out an array of ten scintillator bars, covering a total length of 51 mm. Despite being developed to be used in a particle-detection telescope, the concept is general. In the $10\times 1$ tile, each SiPM is connected to two amplifiers (integrated on the backside of the board) through a couple of position-weighted resistors (conductance gradually varying between the first channel and the last channel). With such an approach, it is possible to recover the total energy deposited through the sum of the two signal amplitudes, while their normalized difference determines the triggered SiPM, i.e., the coordinate of the scintillating bar within the array. We detail the design, the dimensioning of the $10\times 1$ tile, the preliminary characterization with pulsed light, and the final measurements when coupled to the scintillator bar array detecting electrons or alpha particles.

Abstract

Electromagnetic transitions from deformed structures based on $\alpha$ configurations or on heavier clusters are discussed, drawing the link between multiparticle-multihole excited bands and cluster structures. Enhanced E2 and E1 transitions are reviewed in the light nuclei, $^8$Be, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, $^{18}$O and heavier ones like $^{212}$Po. Connections between cluster structures and superdeformed configurations in $^{36}$Ar and $^{40}$Ca are discussed. What the cluster states based on heavier substructures like $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O are concerned, recent results on the resonant radiative capture reaction $^{12}$C($^{16}$O,$\gamma$)$^{28}$Si are presented, in particular the strong decay mode involving the feeding of low-lying $^{28}$Si 1$^+$ and 2$^+$ T=1 states by enhanced M1 isovector transitions., Comment: Plenary talk presented at the Cluster12, Conference, 10th International Conference on Clustering Aspects of Nuclear Structure and Dynamics, Debrecen, Hungary, 24-28 September 2012

Abstract

The 12C+16O resonant radiative capture reaction has been studied at 5 bombarding energies between Elab = 15.4 and 21.4 MeV, around the Coulomb barrier, at the Triumf laboratory (Vancouver, Canada) using the Dragon 0{\deg} spectrometer and the associated BGO array. The most remarquable result is the previously unobserved decay path through 28Si doorway states of energies around 12 MeV leading to the measurement of new capture cross-sections. Abstract

A great deal of research work has been undertaken in the alpha-clustering study since the pioneering discovery, half a century ago, of 12C+12C molecular resonances. Our knowledge of the field of the physics of nuclear molecules has increased considerably and nuclear clustering remains one of the most fruitful domains of nuclear physics, facing some of the greatest challenges and opportunities in the years ahead. In this work, the occurence of "exotic" shapes in light N=Z alpha-like nuclei is investigated. Various approaches of superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant structures are presented. Results on clustering aspects are also discussed for light neutron-rich Oxygen isotopes., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Invited Talk presented by C. Abstract

In this work, we present a novel approach for improving the energy resolution from particles impinging on the interstrip regions of silicon strip detectors. We employed three double-sided strip detectors from the GRIT array and a triple α -source under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the interstrip resolution depends not only on the impinging side but also on whether it is a P- or an N-interstrip. We obtained the interstrip energy resolution down to 0.4%, and, depending on the scenario, the resolution was enhanced by a factor of 2. We believe that this new rotation method allows for the possibility of applying particle identification methods on interstrip events, which in most cases are dismissed during data recording. Abstract

The structure of $^{74}$Se at low energy was investigated via spectroscopy of internal conversion electrons at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL). A set of internal K-conversion coefficients and monopole transition strengths was measured. A large ρ2(E0;22+→21+)⋅103=210(130) value was deduced. This result, in addition to a low upper limit for the 03+→02+ electron transition, casts in doubt a simple interpretation of the $^{74}$Se low-lying structure, in particular the recently proposed spherical, vibrational character. New microscopic beyond-mean-field calculations generally agree with the experimental results and are capable of producing a large ρ2(E0;22+→21+) value, even if still a factor ≈7 smaller than the experiment. Triaxiality and a complex shape-coexistence and mixing scenario seem responsible for this unexpected experimental result.

Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

Abstract

We measured multinucleon transfer reactions for the Pb206+Sn118 system at Elab=1200 MeV by employing the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Differential and total cross sections and Q-value distributions have been obtained for a variety of neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels. The Q-value distributions show how the quasielastic and deep inelastic processes depend on the mass and charge of the transfer products. The corresponding cross sections have been compared with calculations performed with the grazing code. An overall good agreement is found for most of the few nucleon transfer channels. The underestimation of the data for channels involving a large number of transferred nucleons indicates that more complicated processes populate the given isotopes.
