Abstract

This is the summary report of the energy frontier QCD working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We review the status of tools, both theoretical and experimental, for understanding the strong interactions at colliders. We attempt to prioritize important directions that future developments should take. Most of the efforts of the QCD working group concentrate on proton-proton colliders, at 14 TeV as planned for the next run of the LHC, and for 33 and 100 TeV, possible energies of the colliders that will be necessary to carry on the physics program started at 14 TeV. Abstract

Habitat selection is an important decision to make by most species as consequences such as loss of fitness or even death can result if wrong choices are made. Web building spiders are ubiquitous species, and can be found in almost any type of environment from alpine forests to desert terrains. Factors influencing their choice of habitat is, however, still relatively unknown and has been observed to differ between populations, species and even individuals. This review will outline the main factors influencing the habitat selection of web building spiders, as well as potential constraints that may prohibit colonisation. Spiders are important components to ecosystems, providing food for a plethora of species as well as controlling levels of invertebrate prey. Understanding factors influencing the habitat selection of web building spiders is therefore important and must be studied further.

Abstract

High-energy jets recoiling against missing transverse energy (MET) are powerful probes of dark matter at the LHC. Searches based on large MET signatures require a precise control of the $$Z(\nu {\bar{\nu }})+$$ jet background in the signal region. This can be achieved by taking accurate data in control regions dominated by $$Z(\ell ^+\ell ^-)+$$ jet, $$W(\ell \nu )+$$ jet and $$\gamma +$$ jet production, and extrapolating to the $$Z(\nu {\bar{\nu }})+$$ jet background by means of precise theoretical predictions. In this context, recent advances in perturbative calculations open the door to significant sensitivity improvements in dark matter searches. In this spirit, we present a combination of state-of-the-art calculations for all relevant $$V+$$ jets processes, including throughout NNLO QCD corrections and NLO electroweak corrections supplemented by Sudakov logarithms at two loops. Predictions at parton level are provided together with detailed recommendations for their usage in experimental analyses based on the reweighting of Monte Carlo samples. Particular attention is devoted to the estimate of theoretical uncertainties in the framework of dark matter searches, where subtle aspects such as correlations across different $$V+$$ jet processes play a key role. The anticipated theoretical uncertainty in the $$Z(\nu {\bar{\nu }})+$$ jet background is at the few percent level up to the TeV range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An ordered draft sequence of the 17-gigabase hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) genome has been produced by sequencing isolated chromosome arms. We have annotated 124,201 gene loci distributed nearly evenly across the homeologous chromosomes and subgenomes. Comparative gene analysis of wheat subgenomes and extant diploid and tetraploid wheat relatives showed that high sequence similarity and structural conservation are retained, with limited gene loss, after polyploidization. However, across the genomes there was evidence of dynamic gene gain, loss, and duplication since the divergence of the wheat lineages. A high degree of transcriptional autonomy and no global dominance was found for the subgenomes. These insights into the genome biology of a polyploid crop provide a springboard for faster gene isolation, rapid genetic marker development, and precise breeding to meet the needs of increasing food demand worldwide.

Abstract

On Jun 18th 2004, the CERN Council, upon the initiative of its President, Prof. Enzo Iarocci, established an ad hoc scientific advisory group (the Strategy Group), to produce a draft strategy for European particle physics, which is to be considered by a special meeting of the CERN Council, to be held in Lisbon on Jul 14th 2006. There are three volumes to the Briefing Book. This first volume contains an introductory essay on particle physics, a summary of the issues discussed at the Open Symposium, and discussions of the other themes that the Strategy should address. The introductory essay on particle physics and the other themes were commissioned by the Preparatory Group. The summary of the issues discussed in the Symposium was prepared by the chairs of the sessions, the session speakers and the scientific secretaries. We acknowledge that this has been a difficult task, again on a very tight timescale, and we would like to thank all of those who have contributed to this volume.

Abstract

To compare the amount of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in pulmonary artery endothelial cells from different sites and to examine the effect of severe hypoxia (less than 1% of O(2) in 5% CO(2) and 95% N(2)) on the ACE activity expressed by these cells, endothelial cells were harvested and cultured from canine main pulmonary artery by scraping the luminal surface of the artery and from canine pulmonary artery microvessels by infusing chilled buffer with microcarrier beads and 0.02% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). ACE activity in cell lysates and culture medium was evaluated by fluorometric assay with hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-leucine as a substrate. ACE activity in cell lysates and postculture medium of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVEC) was higher than in cell lysates and culture medium of central pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAEC). However, hypoxia suppressed cellular ACE activity in both PAEC and PMVEC. The degree of suppression of ACE activity by hypoxia, which was determined as (ACE activity in normoxia - ACE activity in hypoxia)/ACE activity in normoxia x 100(%), was larger in PMVEC than in PAEC. The pulmonary microvasculature may be a greater source of ACE than central pulmonary artery, and the ACE activity of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells seem to be sensitive to hypoxia, although the small diameter of the vessels improves conditions for interaction of blood-borne substance with endothelial enzymes.

Abstract

M153-1-4 is a low-phytate (LP) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] mutant derived from chemical mutagenesis, possibly from a single gene mutation. However, the inheritance of LP in Cx1834, as descended from M153-1-4, has been shown to involve two independent loci which were subsequently mapped to linkage groups (LGs) Land N. The objectives of this study were to (i) validate the two previously identified LP QTLs in CX1834 using 208 F2:5 lines of CX1834-1-6 × V99-3337, (ii) characterize associations of LP QTLs with phytate content in a set of F2:5 and backcross (BC) lines as derived from phenotypic or genotypic selections, and (iii) evaluate the impact of LP on seedling emergence. Overall, the previously reported LP QTLs were validated in this study. However, observations of natural genetic variation and transgressive segregants suggest that additional LP QTLs could exist, potentially contributed by V99-3337, the other parent of the validation population. A perfect correlation was found between phenotypic (phytate-based) and genotypic (marker-based) selections for LP lines in this study. However, findings of LP marker genotypes in the high phytate (HP) phenotypic selections suggest a potential linkage between HP and LP genes on LG L in CX1834. LP lines did not have uniformly low emergence in this study. Under some environments, HP and LP lines had little difference in seedling emergence in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article discusses the use of play therapy and art therapy treatment techniques for persons in substance abuse treatment who have a history of incest victimization. While substance abuse treatment focuses on substance abuse, neglecting to address issues related to past incest contact may increase the potential for relapse. This population displays unique characteristics that may prevent them from participating in, or benefitting from, traditional treatment modalities (which are highly dependent upon the verbal interactions between clients and therapists). Abstract

ABSTRACTWe examined potable water in Los Angeles, California, as a possible source of infection in AIDS and non-AIDS patients. Nontuberculous mycobacteria were recovered from 12 (92%) of 13 reservoirs, 45 (82%) of 55 homes, 31 (100%) of 31 commercial buildings, and 15 (100%) of 15 hospitals. Large-restriction-fragment (LRF) pattern analyses were done with AseI. The LRF patterns of Mycobacterium aviumisolates recovered from potable water in three homes, two commercial buildings, one reservoir, and eight hospitals had varying degrees of relatedness to 19 clinical isolates recovered from 17 patients. The high number of M. aviumisolates recovered from hospital water and their close relationship with clinical isolates suggests the potential threat of nosocomial spread. This study supports the possibility that potable water is a source for the acquisition ofM. aviuminfections.

Abstract

This study is an effort to examine the applicability of the matrix pattern of organization to selected science agency programs by making a comparison of three major management forms of organization: functional, project, and matrix. Concepts for selecting one organizational form rather than another are investigated in order to ascertain which concepts provide the rationale for choosing specific organizational forms in which the technical and functional specialists can most effectively be utilized. Specifically, the functional, project, and matrix forms of organization are described, analyzed, and compared through a literature search and finally, some applications of matrix patterns of organization in practice are investigated. The concepts used to compare these forms of organizations are: project direction, administration, time duration, flexibility of manpower, maintaining technical capability, project communication, and coordination. For the purpose of this study, a functional management form of organization is defined as representative of the hierarchical form of organization in general use today, i.e., the highly structured, formal, autocratic, strict management controlled concept patterned after the format of the Roman Catholic Church and the Military. A project management form of organization is defined as one where a project manager has direct control and full authority over all the people assigned to the specific, time-constrained task. A matrix management form of organization is defined as the concept which pinpoints a horizontal slice across the vertical structure typical of most hierarchical organizations. Under a matrix organization, employees may be assigned to a project, but they remain on the rolls of their parent {functional) organization and are under that organization's jurisdiction for merit reviews, promotions and similar formal supervisory action. Abstract

Inclusive Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum is induced by different production channels. We focus on the leading production through gluon fusion, and perform a consistent combination of the state of the art calculations obtained in the infinite-top-mass effective theory at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and in the full Standard Model (SM) at next-to-leading order (NLO). We thus present approximate QCD predictions for this process at NNLO, and a study of the corresponding perturbative uncertainties. This calculation is then compared with those obtained with commonly used event generators, and we observe that the description of the considered kinematic regime provided by these tools is in good agreement with state of the art calculations. Finally, we present accurate predictions for other production channels such as vector boson fusion, and associated production with a gauge boson, and with a $t\bar{t}$ pair. We find that, at large transverse momentum, the contribution of other production modes is substantial, and therefore must be included for a precise theory prediction of this observable., 15 pages, 4 figures, 9 tables.
