The first Cassini RADAR observations of Titan reveal a geologically complex, rather smooth and radar-bright surface. Features include multiple types that may be cryovolcanic, and radar-dark possible organic deposits, but few candidate impact craters.

Abstract

In this paper we analyze Cassini's Titan Radar Mapper recent flybys and yet more evidence of dark linear dunes, in the latitude between 30° S and 30° N, whose orientations are somewhat comparable to previous dune observations but at closer study show morphological differences. The appearance of Titan's dunes depends on the projected look direction of the Cassini Radar antenna, incidence angle and resolution. Dune fields are generally oriented East/West on Titan, and for many radar observations the flyby is in the equatorial plane. At closest approach the imaging direction is most nearly normal to the dune direction such as in the central portion of the T8 swath. Away from that configuration, and especially past the -/+10 minutes from close approach, the relative azimuth angle that the projected look direction of the Cassini Radar antenna has with respect to the surface changes rapidly along with incidence angle and resolution resulting in signal attenuation of the imaged features. Observational biases in the SAR images are key for dunes comparison across Titan's equatorial belt. The results show that in some regions the projected look direction could be on the order of 60° and parallel to the long axis of the radar dark features direction (i.e. T16, T25, T28), therefore suggesting that the variation in backscatter must be a combination of compositional dunes dark material and bright interdune material, varying roughness and topography when present. This suggests that we cannot assume that all the dune fields currently imaged can be characterized simply on the bases of their orientation and therefore we suggest that the characterization of the imaged surface features should be divided into at least two categories: -1) topography driven (in which Radar-clinometry can be applied); -2) compositional or due to varying roughness.

Abstract

International audience; The Martian ionosphere's local total electron content (TEC) and the neutral atmosphere scale height can be derived from radar echoes reflected from the surface of the planet. We report the global distribution of the TEC by analyzing more than 750,000 echoes of the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS). This is the first direct measurement of the TEC of the Martian ionosphere. The technique used in this paper is a novel "transmission-mode'' sounding of the ionosphere of Mars in contrast to the Active Ionospheric Sounding experiment (AIS) on MARSIS, which generally operates in the reflection mode. This technique yields a global map of the TEC for the Martian ionosphere. The radar transmits a wideband chirp signal that travels through the ionosphere before and after being reflected from the surface. The received waves are attenuated, delayed and dispersed, depending on the electron density in the column directly below the spacecraft. In the process of correcting the radar signal, we are able to estimate the TEC and its global distribution with an unprecedented resolution of about 0.1 deg in latitude (similar to 5 km footprint). The mapping of the relative geographical variations in the estimated nightside TEC data reveals an intricate web of high electron density regions that correspond to regions where crustal magnetic field lines are connected to the solar wind. Our data demonstrates that these regions are generally but not exclusively associated with areas that have magnetic field lines perpendicular to the surface of Mars. As a result, the global TEC map provides a high-resolution view of where the Martian crustal magnetic field is connected to the solar wind. We also provide an estimate of the neutral atmospheric scale height near the ionospheric peak and observe temporal fluctuations in peak electron density related to solar activity.

Abstract

During the past two years, radar tracks on the icy satellites have more than doubled the number of observations reported by Ostro et al. (2006, Icarus 183, 479-490). Our scatterometry has now yielded estimates of the 2.2-cm- wavelength radar albedo in the same linear (SL) polarization as transmitted for Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Phoebe. Our tracks have sampled widely separated subradar locations on most of the satellites, in some cases using beams comparable to or larger than the target's disc and in others using beams significantly smaller than the disc. Hence we can begin to assess the dispersion in these objects' distributions of radar reflectivity. The 2.2-cm SL radar albedo varies by at least several tens of percent on at least Dione, Rhea, Enceladus, and Iapetus. For Enceladus, a scatterometric observation centered on (29 S, 243 W) with a beamwidth of 1.2 Enceladus diameters gives the largest disc-integrated SL radar albedo obtained at any wavelength for any solar system object (including Europa), probably because of the extreme purity of at least the uppermost few decimeters of the water-ice regolith on much of the hemisphere facing the radar. For Iapetus, multi-beam, disc-resolved measurements disclose that the disparity in the 2.2-cm SL radar albedos between the optically bright and dark terrains is greater than that inferred by Ostro et al. (2006). During the Iapetus 49 flyby shortly after this meeting's abstract deadline, radar observations will include SAR imaging with 2-to-12-km surface resolution covering much of the visible disc, using beam sizes of about 120 km (less than one tenth of an Iapetus diameter), plus a short altimetric measurement with 35-m range resolution. The radar imaging will be mostly of the optically dark terrain and will include tracks across the equatorial ridge and the largest impact structures in Cassini Regio. The Iapetus SAR images will be the first of an icy satellite for which high-resolution optical images are available, and therefore will provide useful lessons for interpreting Titan SAR images.

Abstract

The Cassini Radar flyby of Saturn's moon Titan on 22 July 2006 (T16) provides compelling evidence for the presence of liquid lakes on the surface of Titan. The radar images polewards of 70°N show over 75 circular to irregular radar dark patches from 3 km to over 170 km across, in a region where liquid methane and ethane are expected to be abundant and stable on the surface. Some patches are uniformly dark in appearance, with no measureable echo, while others vary in brightness. We interpret these as lakes based on their very low radar reflectivity and morphological similarities to lakes, including associated channels, location in topographic depressions and multiple shorelines. Lakes appear in a number of apparent states, including fully drained, partially dry and liquid-filled. These northern hemisphere lakes constitute the strongest evidence yet that a condensable-liquid hydrological cycle is active in Titan's surface and atmosphere, in which the lakes are filled through rainfall and/or intersection with the subsurface `liquid methane' table.

Abstract

This study evaluated the utility of defined substrate methodology (DSM) for the enumeration of indicator bacteria in wastewater applications. Two commercial products, Colilert and Enterolert systems (Idexx Laboratories, Westbrook, Maine), were evaluated for variation, false-positive results, and method correlation in both surface waters and treated wastewater effluent. The DSM tests performed as well or better than the traditional methodology. The Colilert total coliform test was also evaluated for its utility in estimating fecal coliforms by incubation at 44.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C. The modified DSM total coliform test correlated well to membrane filtration (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.8) for two different sample groups, demonstrating its utility as a screening tool to estimate fecal coliform densities.

Abstract

A major focus of experimental interest in Sr2IrO4 has been to clarify how the magnetic excitations of this strongly spin-orbit coupled system differ from the predictions of an isotropic 2D spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and to explore the extent to which strong spin-orbit coupling affects the magnetic properties of iridates. Here, we present a high-resolution inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the low-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of Sr2IrO4 and Eu-doped Sr2IrO4 as functions of both temperature and applied magnetic field. We show that the high-field (H > 1.5 T) in-plane spin dynamics of Sr2IrO4 are isotropic and governed by the interplay between the applied field and the small in-plane ferromagnetic spin components induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. However, the spin dynamics of Sr2IrO4 at lower fields (H < 1.5 T) exhibit important effects associated with interlayer coupling and in-plane anisotropy, including a spin-flop transition at Hc in Sr2IrO4 that occurs either discontinuously or via a continuous rotation of the spins, depending on the in-plane orientation of the applied field. These results show that in-plane anisotropy and interlayer coupling effects play important roles in the low-field magnetic and dynamical properties of Sr2IrO4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Superconductivity evolves as functions of pressure or doping from charge-ordered phases in a variety of strongly correlated systems, suggesting that there may be universal characteristics associated with the competition between superconductivity and charge order in these materials. We present an inelastic light (Raman) scattering study of the structural changes that precede the pressure-tuned charge-density-wave (CDW) to superconductor transition in one such system, ZrTe3. In certain phonon bands, we observe dramatic linewidth reductions that accompany CDW formation, indicating that these phonons couple strongly to the electronic degrees of freedom associated with the CDW. The same phonon bands, which represent internal vibrations of ZrTe3 prismatic rods, are suppressed at pressures above ∼10 kbar, indicating a loss of long-range order within the rods, specifically amongst intrarod Zr-Te bonds. These results suggest that the pressure-induced suppression of CDW order observed in ZrTe3 is structurally driven and provide insights into the origin of pressure-induced superconductivity in this material. Abstract

Using a 4.2 K scanning SQUID microscope, we examined twinned thin-film YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-/spl delta// (YBCO)-Ag-PbIn SQUIDs and measured the phase of the order parameter in the YBCO for 13 different tunneling angles. We have found that the order parameter in YBCO is time-reversal symmetric and shows a d(x/sup 2/-y/sup 2/)-pairing symmetry, provided the junctions are properly made. Detailed analysis of our data reveals that any time-reversal breaking component is less than 5%, which rules out states such as d(x/sup 2/-y/sup 2/)+ is or d(x/sup 2/-y/sup 2/)+ id/sub xy/. Abstract

We report herein studies on copper-catalyzed aerobic radical C–C bond cleavage of N–H ketimines. Treatment of N–H ketimines having an α-sp3 hybridized carbon under Cu-catalyzed aerobic reaction conditions resulted in a radical fragmentation with C–C bond cleavage to give the corresponding carbonitrile and carbon radical intermediate. This radical process has been applied for the construction of oxaspirocyclohexadienones as well as in the electrophilic cyanation of Grignard reagents with pivalonitrile as a CN source.

Abstract

AbstractWe report on the epitaxial growth of LiNbO3(1120) films on sapphire (1120) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. We have used a Li-enriched target of Li2NbO3to compensate for the loss of Li at high deposition temperatures of 600–800°C. X-ray θ-2θ scans reveal that the crystal orientation of our LiNbO3films is very sensitive to the deposition temperature and oxygen pressure. To obtain a single (1120) orientation, we need to use a deposition temperature of 800°C and an oxygen pressure of 10−5Torr. Otherwise, an extra (0001) orientation of LiNbO3always occurs. From a rocking curve of the (1120) peak, we have measured a full width at half maximum of 0.3°, implying that our LiNbO3(1120) film is highly oriented. The measured dielectric constants of the LiNbO3(0001) and (1120) films at 1 MHz are 80 and 70, respectively.

Abstract

In this presentation, we are going to explain the thermodynamic origin of warm inflation scenarios by using the effetive Stefan-Boltzmann law. In the warm inflation scenarios, radiation always exists to avoid the graceful exit problem, for which the radiation energy density should be assumed to be finite at the starting point of the warm inflation. To find out the origin of the non-vanishing initial radiation energy density, we derive an effective Stefan-Boltzmann law by considering the non-vanishing trace of the total energy-momentum tensors. The effective Stefan-Boltzmann law successfully shows where the initial radiation energy density is thermodynamically originated from. And by using the above effective Stefan-Boltzmann law, we also study the cosmological scalar perturbation, and obtain the sufficient radiation energy density in order for GUT baryogenesis at the end of inflation.
