We present analyses of variability in the red giant stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC6397, based on data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. We use an non-standard data reduction approach to turn a 23-day observing run originally aimed at imaging the white dwarf population, into time-series photometry of the cluster's highly saturated red giant stars. With this technique we obtain noise levels in the final power spectra down to 50 parts per million, which allows us to search for low amplitude solar-like oscillations. We compare the observed excess power seen in the power spectra with estimates of the typical frequency range, frequency spacing and amplitude from scaling the solar oscillations. We see evidence that the detected variability is consistent with solar-like oscillations in at least one and perhaps up to four stars. With metallicities two orders of magnitude lower than of the Sun, these stars present so far the best evidence of solar-like oscillations in such a low metallicity environment., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ

We investigate the origin of a flux increase found during a transit of TrES-1, observed with the HST. This feature in the HST light curve cannot be attributed to noise and is supposedly a dark area on the stellar surface of the host star eclipsed by TrES-1 during its transit. We investigate the likeliness of two possible hypothesis for its origin: A starspot or a second transiting planet. We made use of several transit observations of TrES-1 from space with the HST and from ground with the IAC-80 telescope. On the basis of these observations we did a statistical study of flux variations in each of the observed events, to investigate if similar flux increases are present in other parts of the data set. The HST observation presents a single clear flux rise during a transit whereas the ground observations led to the detection of two such events but with low significance. In the case of having observed a starspot in the HST data, assuming a central impact between the spot and TrES-1, we would obtain a lower limit for the spot radius of 42000 km. For this radius the spot temperature would be 4690 K, 560 K lower then the stellar surface of 5250 K. For a putative second transiting planet we can set a lower limit for its radius at 0.37 R$_J$ and for periods of less than 10.5 days, we can set an upper limit at 0.72 R$_J$. Assuming a conventional interpretation, then this HST observation constitutes the detection of a starspot. Alternatively, this flux rise might also be caused by an additional transiting planet. The true nature of the origin can be revealed if a wavelength dependency of the flux rise can be shown or discarded with a higher certainty. The nearby transiting system GJ 436b offers a unique opportunity to probe the structure and atmosphere of an extra-solar "hot Neptune". In this Letter, we present the main results of observations covering two transit events with the NICMOS camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. The data consist in high-cadence time series of grism spectra covering the 1.1-1.9 micron spectral range. We find Rpl=4.04 +- 0.10 R_earth and Rstar= 0.446 +- 0.011 Rsun for the planet and star radius, confirming and improving earlier measurements with ground-based photometry and a Spitzer lightcurve at 8 microns, as opposed to a much higher value obtained with the Fine Guidance Sensor on the Hubble Space Telescope. We measure no departure from strict periodicity in the transits to the level of ~7 seconds. This strongly disfavours the proposed explanation of the orbital eccentricity of GJ 436b in terms of the perturbation by another close-by planet. We measure a flat transmission spectrum at the level of a few parts per 10 000 in flux, with no significant signal in the 1.4-micron water band to a level comparable to the maximum amplitude of the effect predicted by planetary atmosphere models., Comment: MNRAS Letters

The nearby transiting planet HD 189733b was observed during three transits with the ACS camera of the Hubble Space Telescope in spectroscopic mode. The resulting time series of 675 spectra covers the 550-1050 nm range, with a resolution element of ~8 nm, at extremely high accuracy (signal-to-noise ratio up to 10,000 in 50 nm intervals in each individual spectrum). Using these data, we disentangle the effects of limb darkening, measurement systematics, and spots on the surface of the host star, to calculate the wavelength dependence of the effective transit radius to an accuracy of ~50 km. This constitutes the ``transmission spectrum'' of the planetary atmosphere. It indicates at each wavelength at what height the planetary atmosphere becomes opaque to the grazing stellar light during the transit. In this wavelength range, strong features due to sodium, potassium and water are predicted by atmosphere models for a planet like HD 189733b, but they can be hidden by broad absorption from clouds or hazes higher up in the atmosphere. We observed an almost featureless transmission spectrum between 550 and 1050 nm, with no indication of the expected sodium or potassium atomic absorption features. Comparison of our results with the transit radius observed in the near and mid-infrared (2-8 microns), and the slope of the spectrum, suggest the presence of a haze of sub-micron particles in the upper atmosphere of the planet., Comment: 11 pages, MNRAS, accepted, minor corrections

To expand the range in the colour-magnitude diagram where asteroseismology can be applied, we organized a photometry campaign to find evidence for solar-like oscillations in giant stars in the globular cluster M4. The aim was to detect the comb-like p-mode structure characteristic for solar-like oscillations in the amplitude spectra. The two dozen main target stars are in the region of the bump stars and have luminosities in the range 50-140 Lsun. We collected 6160 CCD frames and light curves for about 14000 stars were extracted. We obtain high quality light curves for the K giants, but no clear oscillation signal is detected. High precision differential photometry is possible even in very crowded regions like the core of M4. Solar-like oscillations are probably present in K giants, but the amplitudes are lower than classical scaling laws predict., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We monitored three transits of the giant gas planet around the nearby K dwarf HD 189733 with the ACS camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting very-high accuracy lightcurve (signal-to-noise ratio near 15000 on individual measurements, 35000 on 10-minute averages) allows a direct geometric measurement of the orbital inclination, radius ratio and scale of the system: i = 85.68 +- 0.04, Rpl/R*=0.1572 +- 0.0004, a/R*=8.92 +- 0.09. We derive improved values for the stellar and planetary radius, R*=0.755+- 0.011 Rsol, Rpl=1.154 +- 0.017 RJ, and the transit ephemerides, Ttr=2453931.12048 +- 0.00002 + n 2.218581 +- 0.000002$. The HST data also reveal clear evidence of the planet occulting spots on the surface of the star. At least one large spot complex (>80000 km) is required to explain the observed flux residuals and their colour evolution. This feature is compatible in amplitude and phase with the variability observed simultaneously from the ground. No evidence for satellites or rings around HD 189733b is seen in the HST lightcurve. This allows us to exlude with a high probability the presence of Earth-sized moons and Saturn-type debris rings around this planet. The timing of the three transits sampled is stable to the level of a few seconds, excluding a massive second planet in outer 2:1 resonance., Comment: revised version. We have made an asteroseismic analysis of the variable blue stragglers in the open cluster M67. The data set consists of photometric time series from eight sites using nine 0.6-2.1 meter telescopes with a time baseline of 43 days. In two stars, EW Cnc and EX Cnc, we detect the highest number of frequencies (41 and 26) detected in delta Scuti stars belonging to a stellar cluster, and EW Cnc has the second highest number of frequencies detected in any delta Scuti star. We have computed a grid of pulsation models that take the effects of rotation into account. The distribution of observed and theoretical frequencies show that in a wide frequency range a significant fraction of the radial and non-radial low-degree modes are excited to detectable amplitudes. Despite the large number of observed frequencies we cannot constrain the fundamental parameters of the stars. Asteroseismology of stellar clusters is potentially a powerful tool. The assumption of a common age, distance, and chemical composition provides constraints on each cluster member, which significantly improves the asteroseismic output. Driven by this great potential, we carried out multi-site observations aimed at detecting solar-like oscillations in the red giant stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682) (Stello et al. 2006). Here we present the first analysis of our data, which show evidence of excess power in the Fourier spectra, shifting to lower frequencies for more luminous stars, consistent with expectations from oscillations. If the observed power excesses were due to stellar oscillations, this result would show great prospects for asteroseismology in stellar clusters., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. Measuring solar-like oscillations in an ensemble of stars in a cluster, holds promise for testing stellar structure and evolution more stringently than just fitting parameters to single field stars. The most ambitious attempt to pursue these prospects was by Gilliland et al. (1993) who targeted 11 turn-off stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682), but the oscillation amplitudes were too small (<20micromag) to obtain unambiguous detections. Like Gilliland et al. (1993) we also aim at detecting solar-like oscillations in M67, but we target red giant stars with expected amplitudes in the range 50-500micromag and periods of 1 to 8 hours. We analyse our recently published photometry measurements, obtained during a six-week multisite campaign using nine telescopes around the world. The observations are compared with simulations and with estimated properties of the stellar oscillations. Noise levels in the Fourier spectra as low as 27micromag are obtained for single sites, while the combined data reach 19micromag, making this the best photometric time series of an ensemble of red giant stars. These data enable us to make the first test of the scaling relations (used to estimate frequency and amplitude) with an homogeneous ensemble of stars. The detected excess power is consistent with the expected signal from stellar oscillations, both in terms of its frequency range and amplitude. However, our results are limited by apparent high levels of non-white noise, which cannot be clearly separated from the stellar signal., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. NASA's Kepler mission will fly a photometer based on a wide-field Schmidt camera with a 0.95 m aperture, staring at a single field continuously for at least 4 years. Although the mission's principal aim is to locate transiting extrasolar planets, it will provide an unprecedented opportunity to make asteroseismic observations on a wide variety of stars. We report on an ambitious multi-site campaign aimed at detecting stellar variability, particularly solar-like oscillations, in the red giant stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). During the six-week observing run, which comprised 164 telescope nights, we used nine 0.6-m to 2.1-m class telescopes located around the world to obtain uninterrupted time-series photometry. We outline here the data acquisition and reduction, with emphasis on the optimisation of the signal-to-noise of the low amplitude (50-500 micromag) solar-like oscillations. This includes a new and efficient method for obtaining the linearity profile of the CCD response at ultra high precision (~10 parts per million). The noise in the final time series is 0.50 mmag per minute integration for the best site, while the noise in the Fourier spectrum of all sites combined is 20 micromag. In addition to the red giant stars, this data set proves to be very valuable for studying high-amplitude variable stars such as eclipsing binaries, W UMa systems and delta Scuti stars., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We show that the X-ray source W31 in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae is physically associated with the bright blue straggler BSS-7. The two sources are astrometrically matched to 0.061\arcsec, with a chance coincidence probability of less than 1%. We then analyse optical time-series photometry obtained with the {\em Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) and find that BSS-7 displays a 1.56 day periodic signal in the I band. We also construct a broad-band (far-ultraviolet through far-red) spectral energy distribution for BSS-7 and fit this with single and binary models. The binary model is a better fit to the data, and we derive the corresponding stellar parameters. All of our findings are consistent with BSS-7 being a detached binary consisting of a blue straggler primary with an X-ray-active, upper-main-sequence companion. The formation of such a system would necessarily involve at least three stars, which is consistent with recent N-body models in which blue stragglers often form via multiple encounters that can involve both single and binary stars. However, we cannot yet entirely rule out the possibility that BSS-7 descended directly from a binary system via mass transfer. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph has measured the absolute flux for Vega from 0.17-1.01 microns on the HST White Dwarf flux scale. These data are saturated by up to a factor of 80 overexposure but retain linearity to a precision of 0.2%, because the charge bleeds along the columns and is recovered during readout of the CCD. The S/N per pixel exceeds 1000, and the resolution R is about 500. A V magnitude of 0.026 +/- 0.008 is established for Vega; and the absolute flux level is 3.46 x 10^{-9} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} at 5556 A. In the regions of Balmer and Paschen lines, the STIS equivalent widths differ from the pioneering work of Hayes in 1985 but do agree with predictions of a Kurucz model atmosphere, so that the STIS flux distribution is preferred to that of Hayes. Over the full wavelength range, the model atmosphere calculation shows excellent agreement with the STIS flux distribution and is used to extrapolate predicted fluxes into the IR region. However, the IR fluxes are 2% low with respect to the standard Vega model of Cohen. IUE data provide the extension of the measured STIS flux distribution from 0.17 down to 0.12 microns. The STIS relative flux calibration is based on model atmosphere calculations of pure hydrogen WDs, while the Hayes flux calibration is based on the physics of laboratory lamps and black body ovens. The agreement to 1% of these two independent methods for determining the relative stellar flux distributions suggests that both methods may be correct from 0.5-0.8 microns and adds confidence to claims that the fluxes relative to 5500 A are determined to better than 4% by the pure hydrogen WD models from 0.12 to 3 microns., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are an excellent way to find and study the hot, blue stellar populations in the cores of globular clusters. These populations include dynamically-formed blue stragglers and interacting binaries (such as cataclysmic variables), i.e. the products of stellar collisions and near misses. We present new results on five of six known SX Phoenicis stars in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We give interpretations of the light curves in the V and I bands from 8.3 days of observations with the Hubble Space Telescope near the core of 47 Tuc. The most evolved SX Phe star in the cluster is a double-mode pulsator (V2) and we determine its mass to be 1.54+/-0.05 solar masses from its position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and by comparing observed periods with current theoretical pulsation models. For V14 we do not detect any pulsation signal. For the double-mode pulsators V3, V15, and V16 we cannot give a safe identification of the modes. We also describe the photometric techniques we have used to extract the light curves of stars in the crowded core. Some of the SX Phoenicis are saturated and we demonstrate that even for stars that show signs of a bleeding signal we can obtain a point-to-point accuracy of 1-3%., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (2001)

We present a detailed linear, nonadiabatic pulsational scenario for oscillating Blue Stragglers (BSs)/SX Phoenicis (SX Phe) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs) and in Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies. The sequences of models were constructed by adopting a wide range of input parameters and properly cover the region of the HR diagram in which these objects are expected to be pulsationally unstable. Current calculations together with more metal-rich models already presented by Gilliland et al. suggest that the pulsation properties of SX Phe are partially affected by metal content. Our calculations also suggest that the secular period change seems to be a good observable to identify the pulsation mode of cooler SX Phe variables. The dependence of pulsation properties on the helium envelope content is discussed and we find that the secular period change for He-enhanced models is approximately a factor of two larger than for canonical ones. According to this evidence we suggest that the pulsation properties of SX Phe can be soundly adopted to constrain the evolutionary history of BSs, and in turn to single out the physical mechanisms which trigger their formation., Comment: 25 pages, 9 postscript figures, 1 latex file containing five tables, accepted for publication on Astrophysical Journal

We present preliminary results from a FUV spectroscopic and photometric survey of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our main goal is to either confirm or rule out the existence of a large population of CVs in the core of this cluster. We have so far identified approximately 425 FUV sources, most of which are probably hot, young WDs. However, we have also found approximately 30 FUV sources whose position in a FUV-optical color-magnitude diagram makes them strong CV candidates. If most or all of these objects are eventually confirmed as CVs, the large CV population predicted by tidal capture theory has finally been found. Our data has also allowed us to resolve the long-standing puzzle surrounding AKO 9, a UV-bright and highly variable 1.1 day binary system in 47 Tuc. AKO 9 is the brightest FUV source in our data and presents a blue FUV spectrum with strong CIV and HeII emission lines. Its spectrum is similar to that of the long-period, DN-type field CV GK Per. Based on this similarity and other evidence, we suggest that AKO 9 is a long-period CV in which mass-transfer is driven by the nuclear evolution of a sub-giant donor star., Comment: 20 pages including 11 figures, to be published in 'Stellar Collisions, Mergers, and their Consequences', ASP Conference Series

We present results from a study to detect variable galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North. The goal of this project is to investigate the number density of AGN at z=1 through the detection of variable galaxy nuclei. The advantage of HST is the ability to do accurate photometry within smaller apertures, thus allowing us to probe much lower AGN/host galaxy luminosity ratios than can be done from the ground. The primary data sets analyzed for galactic variability follow from the original HDF-N observations in December 1995 and a second epoch obtained two years later. We have detected nuclear variability at or above the 3 sigma level in 8 of 633 HDF galaxies at I<27. Only 2 detections would be expected by chance in a normal distribution. At least one of these 8 has been spectroscopically confirmed as a Seyfert 1 galaxy. Based on the AGN structure function for variability, the estimated luminosity of the varying component in each galaxy lies in the range -19.5

We use Type Ia supernovae studied by the High-Z Supernova Search Team to constrain the properties of an energy component which may have contributed to accelerating the cosmic expansion. We find that for a flat geometry the equation of state parameter for the unknown component, alpha_x=P_x/rho_x, must be less than -0.55 (95% confidence) for any value of Omega_m and is further limited to alpha_x<-0.60 (95%) if Omega_m is assumed to be greater than 0.1 . These values are inconsistent with the unknown component being topological defects such as domain walls, strings, or textures. The supernova data are consistent with a cosmological constant (alpha_x=-1) or a scalar field which has had, on average, an equation of state parameter similar to the cosmological constant value of -1 over the redshift range of z=1 to the present. Supernova and cosmic microwave background observations give complementary constraints on the densities of matter and the unknown component. If only matter and vacuum energy are considered, then the current combined data sets provide direct evidence for a spatially flat Universe with Omega_tot=Omega_m+Omega_Lambda = 0.94 +/- 0.26 (1-sigma)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 3 figures

The installation of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allows for the first time two-dimensional optical and ultraviolet slitless spectroscopy of faint objects from space. The STIS Parallel Survey (SPS) routinely obtains broad band images and slitless spectra of random fields in parallel with HST observations using other instruments. The SPS is designed to study a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena, including the rate of star formation in galaxies at intermediate to high redshift through the detection of emission-line galaxies. We have coordinated Hubble Space Telescope photometry with ground-based discovery for three supernovae: two SN Ia near z~0.5 (SN 1997ce, SN 1997cj) and a third event at z=0.97 (SN 1997ck). The superb spatial resolution of HST separates each supernova from its host galaxy and leads to good precision in the light curves. The HST data combined with ground-based photometry provide good temporal coverage. We use these light curves and relations between luminosity, light curve shape, and color calibrated from low-z samples to derive relative luminosity distances which are accurate to 10% at z~0.5 and 20% at z=1. The redshift-distance relation is used to place constraints on the global mean matter density, Omega_matter, and the normalized cosmological constant, Omega_Lambda. When the HST sample is combined with the distance to SN 1995K (z=0.48), analyzed by the same precepts, it suggests that matter alone is insufficient to produce a flat Universe. Specifically, for Omega_matter+Omega_Lambda=1, Omega_matter is less than 1 with >95% confidence, and our best estimate of Omega_matter is -0.1 +/- 0.5 if Omega_Lambda=0. Numerous weak lines from interstellar atomic species toward Zeta Ophiuchi were observed with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph. Of particular note are the first interstellar detection of cobalt and the detection of boron in this sight line. These measurements provide estimates for the amount of depletion for the two elements. Boron, a volatile, and cobalt, a refractory element, display the depletion pattern found by Savage et al. (1992). The abundance of phosphorus in the H II region associated with the star was obtained from a detection of P III. Additional weak lines from S I, C I, Ni II, and Cu II were detected for the first time; these lines provide the basis for refinements in oscillator strength and column density. Analysis of the neutral sulfur data indicates that the atomic gas is more widely distributed than the molecular material in the main component.
