71. The pulse shape and the spectrum of PSR B0531+21 (Crab pulsar) in the low-energy gamma rays observed with FIGARO II

Abstract

The FIGARO II experiment observed the Crab pulsar in the energy range 0.15-4 MeV during two transmediterranean flights, on 1990 July 9 and on 1986 July 11. A detailed analysis of the pulse profiles shows that the profile in the energy band 0.37-0.51 MeV is characterized, in addition to the main ones, by the presence in the Interpeak region of two other peaks, which could be associated with the 0.44 MeV line reported by Massaro et al. (1991). Spectral analysis confirms that the Ip spectrum, harder than those of P1 and P2, should progressively steepen with increasing energy. We conclude that the observed Crab emission can be due to the superposition of two components and that the one dominant in the Ip is associated with the pair production in the magnetosphere.

Abstract

Up till now, only one study providing practically complete information on acute pancreatitis in Italy has been published. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics, in terms of diagnostic assessment and outcome, of a large series of patients affected by acute pancreatitis in Italy.The study involved 56 Italian centres, homogeneously distributed throughout the entire national territory. Each participating centre was furnished with an ad hoc software including 530 items along with subsequent collection, tabulation and quality control of the data.One thousand five hundred and forty case report forms of patients affected by acute pancreatitis were collected but 367 of them (24%) were subsequently eliminated from the final analysis. Therefore, 1173 patients (581 females and 592 males) were recruited. Mean age of patients was 62.0+/-18.2 years (95% confidence interval, 60.9-63.0). On the basis of Atlanta classification, 1006 patients (85.8%) were defined as mild and 167 (14.2%) as severe pancreatitis. Biliary forms represented the most frequent aetiological category (813 cases, 69.3%) while alcoholic forms only 6.6% (77 cases); the remaining aetiologies accounted for 7.1% (83 cases) while 200 cases (17.1%) remained without a definite aetiological factor. Complete recovery was achieved in 1016 patients (86.6%) whereas morphological sequelae were found in 121 patients (10.3%) and mortality in 36 patients (3.1%; 0.4% in mild and 19.2% in severe acute pancreatitis). Ultrasonography was largely utilised as a first line diagnostic tool in all patients, with valuable visualisation of the pancreas in 85% of patients. Computer tomography scan was also widely used, with 66.7% of exams in mild and 33.3% in severe pancreatitis. Patients affected by biliary pancreatitis presented more severe (p=0.004) and necrotizing forms (p=0.021). Mortality was significantly related (p0.001) with the extension of pancreatic necrosis and with an age of over 70 years. Body mass index presented significantly greater values in severe than in mild forms (p0.001).Association of creatinine serum level over 2mg/dl with an abnormal chest X-ray showed a high significant correlation with a more severe outcome in terms of morphological sequelae and mortality (p=0.0001). Acute pancreatitis in Italy more commonly presents biliary aetiology and favourable outcome with low rate of complications and mortality. From a cost-effectiveness standpoint, diagnostic approach to this disease needs to be better standardised.

Abstract

The Italian Association for the Study of the Pancreas released a diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for acute pancreatitis in 1999.This study focused on the analysis of the therapeutic approach for the treatment of acute pancreatitis in Italy.One thousand, one hundred and seventy-three patients were recruited: 1006 patients (85.8%) had mild acute pancreatitis (MAP) and 167 (14.2%) had the severe acute pancreatitis (SAP); 161 patients showed pancreatic necrosis at computed tomography; 121 patients (10.3%) had sequelae and 36 (3.1%) died.Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and tramadol were used more frequently in patients with the MAP whereas opioids and the association schedules were used more frequently in patients with the SAP (P0.001). Gabexate mesilate was utilised in 831 out of 1173 patients (70.8%); in particular, gabexate mesilate was used in 70.6% patients with MAP and in 73.1% of those with SAP (P=0.521). The duration of the drug administration was significantly shorter in those having MAP than in those having the SAP (P0.001). The antibiotics most frequently used for the prophylaxis against infection from pancreatic necrosis (43.1%) were carbapenems. Only a small number of patients received enteral nutrition (4.7%). Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was carried out in 344 of the 1173 patients (29.3%). Surgery was performed in 48 with SAP (19 had elective biliary surgery and 29 had pancreatic surgery).The results of this survey indicate a lack of compliance with the guidelines which regard the indications mainly for interventional endoscopy and surgery.

Abstract

The peculiarity of the distribution and geometry of metallic ions in enzymes pushed us to set the hypothesis that metallic ions in active-site act like tiny antennas able to pick up very feeble e.m. signals. Enzymatic activity of Cu2+, Zn2+ Superoxide Dismutase (SOD1) and Fe2+ Xanthine Oxidase (XO) has been studied, following in vitro generation and removal of free radicals. We observed that Superoxide radicals generation by XO is increased by a weak field having the Larmor frequency fL of Fe2+ while the SOD1 kinetics is sensibly reduced by exposure to a weak field having the frequency fL of Cu2+ ion., 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Gamma-ray observations of the pulsar of the Crab nebula, PSR0531+21, have been performed in the low energy range (0.15-4.0 MeV) with FIGARO II, a large area balloon borne NaI(Tl) detector, during two flights performed on 1986 July 11 and 1990 July 9. A Kernel estimator built from the phases of the individual gamma-ray arrival times has allowed an accurate derivation of the radio-gamma time delay from those short duration gamma-ray observations. The gamma-ray pulse is found ahead of the radio pulse by 600 +/- 145 mu s and 375 +/- 148 mu s for the 1986 and 1990 observations respectively. Both radio-gamma delays could be attributed to variability of the interstellar dispersion since dispersion measures are available from radio measurements respectively two months before the 1986 flight and six days after the 1990 flight. An alternative explanation, particularly from the 1990 observation, could be that maximum gamma-ray and radio emissions originate from spatially different regions of the magnetosphere, distant by about 100 km.

Abstract

New features in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of porous silicon have been examined here. A new isotropic EPR center was observed at g=1.9995(1) at T=4.2 K, in both p-type and n-type porous silicon. By comparing its g value with those of shallow donors in bulk silicon, the center was identified due to the conduction-band (CB) electrons in silicon microcrystals. The CB signal, present in freshly prepared p-type and n-type samples, can be dramatically and surprisingly enhanced by the presence of a polar solvent on the n-type porous silicon surface. Even though it was shown that most of the donor electrons in an n-type sample can be pulled into the porous layer from the substrate by solvent exposure of the porous layer, the possible electrochemical effects are not yet completely understood; to establish a reasonable model for them would require appropriately controlled experiments. Abstract

On 1990 July 9, the balloon-borne experiment FIGARO II (0.15 - 4 MeV) observed the Crab region. The light-curve of PSR 0531+212 shows, in addition to the well-known two-peak structures, evidence for extra structures at absolute radio phases 0.1, 0.3, and 0.45 around the energy 0.44 MeV. The phase-resolved spectroscopy confirms that an excess, compatible with a line-like feature, is present at these phase positions.

Abstract

A multi-stroke handwritten character recognition system is presented in this paper. A suitable set of Fourier Descriptors is used as features set to describe each stroke. A man-machine interactive algorithm was utilized to accomplish the learning phase and to recognize unknown samples. A PC based prototype was realized at first to test the system. In order to speed up the recognition process, the design and a first prototype of a Transputer-based system have been realized too. Some preliminary experimental results obtained applying these machines to handwritten numerals are reported in the paper.

Abstract

Background: In Italy, no long-term studies regarding the natural history of acute pancreatitis have been carried out. Aim: To report the results of a follow-up on a large series of patients hospitalised for pancreatitis. Methods: Data of 631 patients admitted to 35 Italian hospitals were retrospectively evaluated 51.7 ± 8.4 months after discharge. Results: The average recovery time after mild or severe pancreatitis was 28.2 and 53.4 days respectively. Fourteen sequelae were not resolved and 9 cases required late surgical intervention. Eighty patients (12.7%) had a second hospital admission. Of the patients with mild biliary pancreatitis, 67.9% underwent a cholecystectomy. The overall incidence of relapse was 12.7%. Mortality was 9.8% and no death was related to pancreatitis. Three patients died from carcinoma of the pancreas. Conclusion: Reported recovery time after an attack of pancreatitis was longer than expected in the mild forms. The treatment of sequelae was delayed beyond one year after discharge. The incidence of relapse of biliary pancreatitis in patients not undergoing a cholecystectomy was low, due to endoscopic treatment. Mortality from pancreatic-related causes is low, but there is an association with malignant pancreatic or ampullary tumours not diagnosed during the acute phase of the illness. © 2013 Editrice Gastroenterologica Italiana S.r.l

Abstract

Resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms do not deteriorate with the increase of white matter vascular lesion in amnesic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects [1], although white matter is impaired along Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we tested whether this is true even in AD subjects. Closed-eye resting state EEG data were recorded in 40 healthy elderly (Nold), 96 amnesic MCI, and 83 AD subjects. White matter vascular lesions were indexed by magnetic resonance imaging recorded in the MCI and AD subjects (about 42% of cases following ADNI standards). The MCI subjects were divided into two sub-groups based on the median of the white matter lesion, namely MCI+ (people with highest vascular load; n = 48) and MCI- (people with lowest vascular load; n = 48). The same was true for the AD subjects (AD+, n = 42; AD-, n = 41). EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha1 (8-10.5 Hz), alpha2 (10.5-13 Hz), beta1 (13-20 Hz), beta2 (20-30 Hz), and gamma (30-40 Hz). LORETA software estimated cortical EEG sources. When compared to Nold group, MCI and AD groups showed well known abnormalities of delta and alpha sources. Furthermore, amplitude of occipital, temporal, and limbic alpha 1 sources were higher in MCI+ than MCI- group. As a novelty, amplitude of occipital delta sources was lower in AD+ than AD- group. Furthermore, central, parietal, occipital, temporal, and limbic alpha sources were higher in amplitude in AD+ than AD- group. Amplitude of these sources was correlated to global cognitive status (i.e., Mini Mental State Evaluation score). These results suggest that in amnesic MCI and AD subjects, resting state posterior delta and alpha EEG rhythms do not deteriorate with the increase of white-matter vascular lesion. These rhythms might be more sensitive to AD neurodegenerative processes and cognitive status rather than to concomitant lesions to white matter.

Abstract

Splenic artery pseudoaneurysms are the most common of visceral artery pseudoaneurysms. Splenic pseudoaneurysms appear to have developed as a consequence of inflammatory processes adjacent to the splenic artery, particularly acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis with associated pseudocysts. They are often asymptomatic and picked up on abdominal examination for ultrasound or CT scanning for other conditions. Complications include rupture with retroperitoneal hemorrhage or intraperitoneal hemorrhage. Two cases of splenic pseudoaneurysms, following acute pancreatitis, are reported between the years 1987 and 1996.
