This essay begins with an apparently simple question: why did Sir John Harington, an experienced practitioner of the printed book, turn to manuscript? On examination, Orlando Furioso shows a remarkably original concern with all the elements of a book, as Harington manipulates preface, annotations, commentaries, tables, indices and, in particular, the margins. Harington seems unusually interested in establishing a relationship with each of his readers, and in the act of reading itself. While the variety in copies of Orlando Furioso looks like a generous expression of friendship to individual readers, A New Discourse of a Stale Subject shows Harington exploiting the apparent uniformity of print to produce a variable text where print provides the anodyne mask for deeply subversive transcription. Retrouvant dans l'Hamlet de Shakespeare d'innombrables allusions a la liturgie catholique ou a la situation des catholiques anglais persecutes par le pouvoir royal, l'A. donne une nouvelle lecture de la celebre piece: Hamlet semble receler un hommage secret, crypte, au jesuite anglais Edmund Campion, execute en 1581. La piece, caracterise par l'omnipresence de la mort et de la memoire, semble etre un requiem adresse par Shakespeare aux martyrs anglais.

Edmund Campion's detailed negotiations with the Grocers' Company, still extant in beautifully neat minutes, reveal a close triangular relationship between the city companies, Paul's Cross, and the university of Oxford. On 12 April, only seven days earlier, Campion would have been in Christ's Hospital itself, which was only three hundred feet from Smithfield, where Thomas Loseby, Henry Ramsey, Thomas Thyrtell, Margaret Hyde and Agnes Stanley were burned as a group; the noise, smell and smoke must all have enveloped the consciousness of the boys and their teachers. The participation of Christ's Hospital in the Spital sermons is a reminder that the sermon culture was itself a part of a larger culture of disputation that began with inter-school competitions. It was a culture that rapidly spread across the entire system of grammar schools in England, and indeed throughout Europe.
