Abstract

The Capacitated Shortest Spanning Tree Problem consists of determining a shortest spanning tree in a vertex weighted graph such that the weight of every subtree linked to the root by an edge does not exceed a prescribed capacity. We propose a tabu search heuristic for this problem, as well as dynamic data structures developed to speed up the algorithm. Computational results on new randomly generated instances and on instances taken from the literature indicate that the proposed approach produces high-quality solutions within reasonable computing times. Abstract

The article examines the political aspects of the concept of the common heritage of mankind. The common heritage of humankind traces a juridical path that opens the way towards a thought of the genuine universal. In so doing, it shows up the universal of the state, that limited universal, for its smallness, not to say its lie, since the state had and always has an outside, made up of other universals. However, in the same movement, a great glimmer of hope irrupts on our horizon, the hope of something radically new. An anxiety is born of the impossibility of thinking this demand for a commonality that would exclude no one. This anxiety rekindles the restricted universal claims of existing states, and sometimes destabilizes them. Indeed, the idea of sharing among everyone persists in response to that of maintaining distributional rules or guaranties as they have developed so far. But what also emerges is the idea of redrawing the groups according to which distribution is socially organized.

88. Rapid assay of human plasma carboxypeptidase N by high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of hippuryl-lysine and its product

Abstract

A rapid and sensitive method for measuring carboxypeptidase N (CPN) activity in human plasma is described. The procedure is based on the hydrolysis of a high-specificity/low-affinity substrate, hippuryl-L-lysine, to its products hippuric acid and lysine. The substrate and product are separated quantitatively by high-performance liquid chromatography in less than 10 min following a minimal sample preparation time. The advantages of this method over previous ones are discussed and data are presented demonstrating the reliability of this method for the routine clinical determination of CPN activity.

89. The Interaction of Bone Gla Protein (Osteocalcin) with Phospholipid Vesicles

Abstract

The binding interaction of bone Gla protein (BGP), or osteocalcin, to phospholipid vesicles in the presence of calcium has been investigated. Two separate indirect methodologies involving displacement of pyrene-modified Factor Va bound to phospholipid vesicles, and competition with several coagulation proteins in a prothrombin activation assay were performed. Titration of BGP into a cuvette containing phospholipid vesicles (75:25, L-α-phosphatidylcholine/L-α-phosphatidylserine (PCPS] saturated with pyrene-modified Factor Va resulted in a systematic decrease in steady-state anisotropy, suggesting competition for membrane binding sites with pyrene-modified Factor Va. BGP was also found to inhibit thrombin generation in the prothrombin activation assay. Approximately 50% inhibition was observed at 3 µMBGP under phospholipid-limiting (0.5 µMPCPS) concentrations. No inhibition was observed under phospholipid excess (30 µMPCPS) concentrations. Direct measurement of phospholipid binding was measured using equilibrium gel filtration. Elution profiles using fixed lipid (3.4 μmol of PCPS) and varying BGP concentrations (1–17 µM) in the presence of 3 mMCaCl2showed a BGP-phospholipid association. Quantitation of determined isotherm yielded a dissociation constant of 6 ± 1 µMwith a stoichiometry of 102 ± 9 BGP molecules/vesicle at saturation (35 PCPS lipids/BGP) in the presence of 3 mMCaCl2. These results support the hypothesis that protein γ-carboxylation events are coincident with membrane binding potential.

Abstract

International audience; Organizations of pre-hospital emergency medical services have as first mission to provide medical assistance to patients including transport to medical centers if necessary, and a second one that concerns the transfers of patients from one medical facility to another one. Most organizations in Canada and in North-America use two independent fleets to perform these missions. Although operating two separated fleets seems easier to do, it appears to be less efficient than an integrated fleet management approach able to deal with both types of demands. Taking this into consideration, this paper aims to design and evaluate the performance of three management approaches. This is a very challenging problem, since it involves solving simultaneously two difficult vehicle routing problems: an ambulance relocation problem and a dial a ride problem.

Abstract

We examine and compare simulation-based algorithms for solvingthe agent scheduling problem in a multiskill call center.This problem consists in minimizing the total costs of agents underconstraints on the expected service level per call type,per period, and aggregated.We propose a solution approach that combines simulation withinteger or linear programming, with cut generation.In our numerical experiments with realistic problem instances,this approach performs better than all other methods proposedpreviously for this problem.We also show that the two-step approach, which is the standard methodfor solving this problem, sometimes yield solutions that arehighly suboptimal and inferior to those obtained by our proposed method.

Abstract

Continuous centrifuges, which are in general use in ore processing can be subdivided into two categories, the decanting centrifuges and the spinning (dewatering) centrifuges. Continuous solid-bowl decanters make use of the sedimentation which is accelerated by the action of the centrifugal force.
