Abstract

We present observations of the T8 dwarf 2MASS 0415-0935 with JWST's NIRSpec spectrograph using the G395H grating ($\sim$ 2.87 - 5.14 $\mu$m). We perform the first atmospheric retrieval analysis at the maximum spectral resolution of NIRSpec (R$\sim$2700) and combine the spectrum with previous observations to study the 0.9-20 $\mu$m spectral energy distribution. We obtain precise constraints on chemical abundances ($\sim$0.02 dex) for a number of species which complicate our understanding of disequilibrium chemistry, particularly for CO$_{2}$ and PH$_{3}$. Furthermore, we measure a $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio of $\sim 97^{+9}_{-8}$, making 2MASS 0415-0935 the coldest ($\sim 760$ K) substellar object outside of our solar system with a measured $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio. This work shows promise for similar observations with JWST to provide precise abundances of major chemical species as well as isotopologues, allowing for new tests of our understanding of the formation and atmospheres of substellar objects., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

Thrombospondin-4 (TSP-4) belongs to the extracellular matrix glycoprotein family of thrombospondins (TSPs). The multidomain, pentameric structure of TSP-4 allows its interactions with numerous extracellular matrix components, proteins and signaling molecules that enable its modulation to various physiological and pathological processes. Characterization of TSP-4 expression under development and pathogenesis of disorders has yielded important insights into mechanisms underlying the unique role of TSP-4 in mediating various processes including cell-cell, cell-extracellular matrix interactions, cell migration, proliferation, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and synaptogenesis. Maladaptation of these processes in response to pathological insults and stress can accelerate the development of disorders including skeletal dysplasia, osteoporosis, degenerative joint disease, cardiovascular diseases, tumor progression/metastasis and neurological disorders. Overall, the diverse functions of TSP-4 suggest that it may be a potential marker or therapeutic target for prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of various pathological conditions upon further investigations. This review article highlights recent findings on the role of TSP-4 in both physiological and pathological conditions with a focus on what sets it apart from other TSPs.

Abstract

The unprecedented medium-resolution (R~1500-3500) near- and mid-infrared (1-18um) spectrum provided by JWST for the young (140+/-20Myr) low-mass (12-20MJup) L-T transition (L7) companion VHS1256b gives access to a catalogue of molecular absorptions. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of this dataset utilizing a forward modelling approach, applying our Bayesian framework, ForMoSA. We explore five distinct atmospheric models to assess their performance in estimating key atmospheric parameters: Teff, log(g), [M/H], C/O, gamma, fsed, and R. Our findings reveal that each parameter's estimate is significantly influenced by factors such as the wavelength range considered and the model chosen for the fit. This is attributed to systematic errors in the models and their challenges in accurately replicating the complex atmospheric structure of VHS1256b, notably the complexity of its clouds and dust distribution. To propagate the impact of these systematic uncertainties on our atmospheric property estimates, we introduce innovative fitting methodologies based on independent fits performed on different spectral windows. We finally derived a Teff consistent with the spectral type of the target, considering its young age, which is confirmed by our estimate of log(g). Despite the exceptional data quality, attaining robust estimates for chemical abundances [M/H] and C/O, often employed as indicators of formation history, remains challenging. Nevertheless, the pioneering case of JWST's data for VHS1256b has paved the way for future acquisitions of substellar spectra that will be systematically analyzed to directly compare the properties of these objects and correct the systematics in the models., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables, 2 appendices

Abstract

A complete accounting of nearby objects -- from the highest-mass white dwarf progenitors down to low-mass brown dwarfs -- is now possible, thanks to an almost complete set of trigonometric parallax determinations from Gaia, ground-based surveys, and Spitzer follow-up. We create a census of objects within a Sun-centered sphere of 20-pc radius and check published literature to decompose each binary or higher-order system into its separate components. The result is a volume-limited census of $\sim$3,600 individual star formation products useful in measuring the initial mass function across the stellar ($<8 M_\odot$) and substellar ($\gtrsim 5 M_{Jup}$) regimes. Comparing our resulting initial mass function to previous measurements shows good agreement above 0.8$M_\odot$ and a divergence at lower masses. Our 20-pc space densities are best fit with a quadripartite power law, $\xi(M) = dN/dM \propto M^{-\alpha}$ with long-established values of $\alpha = 2.3$ at high masses ($0.55 < M < 8.00 M_\odot$) and $\alpha = 1.3$ at intermediate masses ($0.22 < M < 0.55 M_\odot$), but at lower masses we find $\alpha = 0.25$ for $0.05 < M <0.22 M_\odot$ and $\alpha = 0.6$ for $0.01 < M < 0.05 M_\odot$. This implies that the rate of production as a function of decreasing mass diminishes in the low-mass star/high-mass brown dwarf regime before increasing again in the low-mass brown dwarf regime. Abstract

Se presenta los hallazgos de la fase cualitativa de una investigación de corte mixto que pretende explicar la contribución de las prácticas de evaluación en la autorregulación académica de los estudiantes normalistas. En el estudio de caso múltiple y evaluativo, se aplicaron tres entrevistas a profundidad con técnica de recuerdo, a diez formadores de docentes sobre sus prácticas de evaluación, y la implicación de los estudiantes durante el desarrollo de un curso semestral para identificar sus conocimientos docentes (SHULMAN, 1987) así como analizar la construcción de nuevos conocimientos docentes en función de los perfiles de práctica de evaluación de los aprendizajes. Los docentes fueron seleccionados según el método de sujetos voluntarios y de cuotas, entre las cuales, debían hacer uso de alguna herramienta tecnológica en el proceso de evaluación. Los hallazgos permiten identificar tres patrones o perfiles de práctica de evaluación de los aprendizajes.

Abstract

Objective: to explore the different expressions within the diversity observed in Veracruz city and its conurbation. Method: a mixed methodologic approach was used, applying a non probabilistic survey with focalized observation. For its quantitative dimension, 360 instruments were applied and the qualitative observation defined units to register significant aspects of the local culture. Results: there are practices and habits that allow tracing the urban landscape of the diversity that characterizes the daily life of the habitants, where the appropriation of consumer offers and experiences, becomes distinctive signs produced by the heterogeneity and differences that prevail among the social groups that co-inhabit the analyzed conurbation.

Abstract

Background: Patients undergoing hemodialysis are susceptible to the nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus, increasing the risk of developing infections associated with higher morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to describe the frequency of S. aureus carriage in hemodialysis patients and to perform molecular analysis of isolates by applying multiple-locus variable analysis. Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross sectional study with non-probabilistic sampling that included 28 hemodialysis patients attending the Nephrology Department of Hospital de Clínicas in Asunción, Paraguay. We obtained clinical data from medical records and interviews with patients. Nasal swabs were collected and analyzed by microbiological and molecular methods. Results: The frequency of S. aureus carriage was 50% (14/28), 93% of which (13/14) were methicillin resistant, 57% (6/14) were gentamicin resistant and 36% (5/14) were resistant to more than 4 antibiotic classes. S. aureus carriers showed higher frequency of rhinitis (p=0.02 odds ratio [OR]=6.6 (1.2- 34.4)). Seven methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates had been analyzed by multiple-locus variable analysis, two of them showed identical pattern bands. Conclusion: We found a high frequency of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization and the presence of two isolates with identical profile in the multiple-locus variable analysis indicating the possibility of transmission between patients.

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación es desarrollar un índice de pérdidas y desperdicios de alimentos e investigar el grado de compromiso de las empresas mexicanas para disminuir los desechos de alimentos. El índice muestra que al menos 35.3% de los alimentos se pierden o desperdician anualmente en México, un país con más de 19 millones de personas en condiciones de pobreza e inseguridad alimentaria. Se aplicó una encuesta a 3 grupos de empresarios, los resultados muestran que 23% de las grandes empresas mexicanas desarrolla cotidianamente actividades contra el desperdicio de alimentos, pero 79% de las medianas empresas y 96% de las pequeñas y micro empresas no tienen ningún plan ni realizan actividades cotidianas contra las pérdidas y desperdicios de alimentos. Proponemos la tarea de reducir desechos de alimentos como una gran área de oportunidad para la Responsabilidad Social Corporativa en México.

59. Uso de la tierra y crecimiento de la población en el oriente del estado de México

Abstract

El oriente del estado de México en los últimos años ha tenido un gran crecimiento de núcleos urbanos, cambiando el uso de los recursos naturales. El objetivo es caracterizar el uso de la tierra y relacionarlo con el crecimiento de la población, para diagnosticar el impacto de la población en la microcuenca de los ríos Coatepec y El Manzano. Para lo anterior se caracterizaron ocho usos de la tierra. Siendo el uso agrícola el más representativo de la cuenca. A través de ortofotos digitales e imágenes de satélites Landsat 7, se generaron los mapas del uso de la tierra para los años 1999 y 2015. Los resultados obtenidos fueron la reducción de hectáreas destinadas al uso: agrícola, vegetación menos densa y, baldío; mientras que se incrementaron hectáreas para los uso urbano, mina y matorral. Los cambios en el uso de la tierra, se relacionan con el crecimiento de la población de los municipios presentes del oriente del Estado de México: Chicoloapan, Ixtapaluca y Texcoco, con una tasa de crecimiento en porciento de 10.87, 4.4 y 1.2 respectivamente. Se recomienda diversificar los cultivos, implementar un sistema de pastoreo controlado en áreas de matorral, así como un plan de manejo para 800 hectáreas de bosque. 64. Preservice Teachers' Knowledge Mobilized in Solving Area Tasks

Abstract

Studies that address preservice teachers' knowledge of area measurement emphasize their lack of knowledge and their tendency towards the use of formulas, without offering a body of knowledge that helps to address such difficulties. This study offers an approximation of the mathematical knowledge necessary for preservice teachers to solve area tasks. For this, the Mathematics Teacher's Specialized Knowledge model is used with emphasis on the subdomain of Knowledge of Topics and Knowledge of the Structure of Mathematics. Preservice teachers' resolutions and written justifications are analyzed using qualitative and quantitative tools. The results indicate that those resolutions that manage to mobilize mathematical knowledge are associated with the joint mobilization of different procedures, properties, and geometric principles. Results also indicate that the strategic coordination between different registers of representation allows Preservice Teachers to mobilize categories of specialized knowledge and establishing connections with other mathematical contents.

Abstract

Las leguminosas nativas del Altiplano (q'ila-q'ila o salqa) ofrecen buenas opciones en el agro ecosistema de la quinua, puesto las experiencias previas mostraron sus bondades en la producción de abono verde, fijación de nitrógeno atmosférico y cobertura del suelo. La disponibilidad de semilla de estas especies constituye la limitante para el escalamiento de la experiencia. Por tanto, se ha planteado investigar los métodos de recolección de semilla de las leguminosas nativas adoptando el método de investigación descriptiva y explicativa. Los resultados se traducen en desarrollo de métodos de recolección de semilla en campos naturales, pudiendo optarse por la cosecha de vainas, cosecha de racimos y recolección de semilla derramada al suelo dependiendo de las características morfológicas y anatómicas de los ecotipos, características de suelo en el sitio de colecta y la eficiencia deseada de colecta semilla. La trilla y limpieza de semilla es factible mediante métodos manuales o con empleo equipo mecánico ajustado para tal fin. La investigación ha mostrado que la dormancia de semilla de la q'ila-q'ila es compleja, dependiendo del grado de deshidratación y la dureza de la testa, lo cual ha conducido a desarrollar métodos de tratamiento de semilla basado en la escarificación que permitieron alcanzar entre 60 y 86% de germinación.

Abstract

The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is the main radiation field responsible for attenuating extragalactic gamma-ray emission at very high energies, but its precise spectral intensity is not fully determined. Therefore, disentangling propagation effects from the intrinsic spectral properties of gamma-ray sources (such as active galactic nuclei, AGN) is the primary challenge to interpreting observations of these objects. We present a Bayesian and Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to simultaneously infer parameters characterizing the EBL and the intrinsic spectra in a combined fit of a set of sources, which has the advantage of easily incorporating the uncertainties of both sets of parameters into one another through marginalization of the posterior distribution. Taking a sample of synthetic blazars observed by the ideal CTA configuration, we study the effects on the EBL constraints of combining multiple observations and varying their exposure. We also apply the methodology to a set of 65 gamma-ray spectra of 36 different AGNs measured by current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo as a solution to the difficult task of sampling in spaces with a high number of parameters. We find robust constraints in the mid-IR region while simultaneously obtaining intrinsic spectral parameters for all of these objects. Abstract

We present aperture masking interferometry (AMI) observations of the star HIP 65426 at $3.8\,\rm{\mu m}$ as a part of the JWST Direct Imaging Early Release Science (ERS) program obtained using the Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) instrument. This mode provides access to very small inner working angles (even separations slightly below the Michelson limit of $0.5\lambda/D$ for an interferometer), which are inaccessible with the classical inner working angles of the JWST coronagraphs. When combined with JWST's unprecedented infrared sensitivity, this mode has the potential to probe a new portion of parameter space across a wide array of astronomical observations. Using this mode, we are able to achieve a $5\sigma$ contrast of $\Delta m{\sim}7.62{\pm}0.13$ mag relative to the host star at separations ${\gtrsim}0.07{"}$, and the contrast deteriorates steeply at separations ${\lesssim}0.07{"}$. However, we detect no additional companions interior to the known companion HIP 65426 b (at separation ${\sim}0.82{"}$ or, $87^{+108}_{-31}\,\rm{au}$). Our observations thus rule out companions more massive than $10{-}12\,\rm{M_{Jup}}$ at separations ${\sim}10{-}20\,\rm{au}$ from HIP 65426, a region out of reach of ground or space-based coronagraphic imaging. These observations confirm that the AMI mode on JWST is sensitive to planetary mass companions at close-in separations (${\gtrsim}0.07{"}$), even for thousands of more distant stars at $\sim$100 pc, in addition to the stars in the nearby young moving groups as stated in previous works. Abstract

We present a performance analysis for the aperture masking interferometry (AMI) mode on board the James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (JWST/NIRISS). Thanks to self-calibrating observables, AMI accesses inner working angles down to and even within the classical diffraction limit. The scientific potential of this mode has recently been demonstrated by the Early Release Science (ERS) 1386 program with a deep search for close-in companions in the HIP 65426 exoplanetary system. As part of ERS 1386, we use the same data set to explore the random, static, and calibration errors of NIRISS AMI observables. We compare the observed noise properties and achievable contrast to theoretical predictions. We explore possible sources of calibration errors and show that differences in charge migration between the observations of HIP 65426 and point-spread function calibration stars can account for the achieved contrast curves. Lastly, we use self-calibration tests to demonstrate that with adequate calibration NIRISS F380M AMI can reach contrast levels of $\sim9-10$ mag at $\gtrsim \lambda/D$. These tests lead us to observation planning recommendations and strongly motivate future studies aimed at producing sophisticated calibration strategies taking these systematic effects into account. This will unlock the unprecedented capabilities of JWST/NIRISS AMI, with sensitivity to significantly colder, lower-mass exoplanets than lower-contrast ground-based AMI setups, at orbital separations inaccessible to JWST coronagraphy., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

Classical Be stars are fast rotating, near main sequence B-type stars. The rotation and the presence of circumstellar discs profoundly modify the observables of active Be stars. Our goal is to infer stellar and disc parameters, as well as distance and interstellar extinction, using the currently most favoured physical models for these objects. We present BeAtlas, a grid of 61.600 NLTE radiative transfer models for Be stars, calculated with the HDUST code. The grid was coupled with a Monte Carlo Markov chain code to sample the posterior distribution. We test our method on two well-studied Be stars, $\alpha$ Eri and $\beta$ CMi, using photometric, polarimetric and spectroscopic data as input to the code. We recover literature determinations for most of the parameters of the targets, in particular the mass and age of $\alpha$ Eri, the disc parameters of $\beta$ CMi, and their distances and inclinations. The main discrepancy is that we estimate lower rotational rates than previous works. We confirm previously detected signs of disc truncation in $\beta$ CMi and note that its inner disc seems to have a flatter density slope than its outer disc. The correlations between the parameters are complex, further indicating that exploring the entire parameter space simultaneously is a more robust approach, statistically. The combination of BeAtlas and Bayesian-MCMC techniques proves successful, and a powerful new tool for the field: the fundamental parameters of any Be star can now be estimated in a matter of hours or days.

Abstract

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal-dominant condition characterized by the presence of multiple colorectal adenomas, caused by germline variants in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene. More than 300 germline variants have been characterized. The detection of novel variants is important to understand the mechanisms of pathophysiology. We identified a novel pathogenic germline variant using next-generation sequencing (NGS) in a proband patient. The variant is a complex rearrangement (c.422+1123_532-577 del ins 423-1933_423-1687 inv) that generates a complete deletion of exon 5 of the APC gene. To study the variant in other family members, we designed an endpoint PCR method followed by Sanger sequencing. The variant was identified in the proband patient’s mother, one daughter, her brother, two cousins, a niece, and a second nephew. In patients where the variant was identified, we found atypical clinical symptoms, including mandibular, ovarian, breast, pancreatic, and gastric cancer. Genetic counseling and cancer prevention strategies were provided for the family. According to the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) guidelines, this novel variant is considered a PVS1 variant (very strong evidence of pathogenicity), and it can be useful in association with clinical data for early surveillance and suitable treatment.

En esta investigación se muestra –a partir de los cálculos con microdatos de la Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos de los Hogares– con la metodología de descomposición de los índices de desigualdad de Gini, Mehran y Piesch, cómo los “programas públicos tipo Oportunidades” contribuyeron con 11,15% a la reducción en la desigualdad observada (índice de Gini) en México entre 2000 y 2012. Las remesas que reciben los hogares explican al menos 9,02% de la reduc - ción en la desigualdad en el mismo periodo. El índice de Mehran muestra que las remesas contribuyeron con 17,25% a la caída del nivel de desigualdad.

Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, every year about 3.4 million adults die of consequences related to overweight or obesity. People with a Body Mass Index above 30 are more likely to express certain diseases, including some types of cancer. In this narrative review, we assess the role of adipose tissue as a modulator of the endocrine system and facilitator of chronic subclinical inflammation. We discuss how obesity can induce a suitable micro environment for the development of tumors, mainly by enhancing the levels of oxidative stress and the concentrations of hormones such as leptin, insulin and prolactin. We conclude that all together, these factors increase the probability of cancer development.

Abstract

Animal training is meant to teach specific behavioral responses to specific cues. Clicker training (CT) is a popular training method based on the use of a device that emits a sound of double-click to be associated as a first-order conditioned stimulus in contingency with positive reinforcements. After some repetitions, the clicker sound gains some incentive value and can be paired with the desired behavior. Animal trainers believed that CT can decrease training time compared to other types of training. Herein, we used two-month old miniature piglets to evaluate whether CT decreased the number of repetitions required to learn complex behaviors as compared with animals trained with voice instead of the clicker. In addition, we compared the number of correct choices of animals from both groups when exposed to object discriminative tests. Results indicated that CT decreased the number of repetitions required for pigs to learn to fetch an object but reduced the ability of animals to make correct choices during the discriminate trials. This suggests that CT is more efficient than voice to teach complex behaviors but reduces the ability of animals to use cognitive processes required to discriminate and select objects associated with reward.

Abstract

Thermoplastic multilayer composites with different fiber orientations were prepared with polypropylene and aramid fibers as reinforcing material. The prepregs were prepared in a continuous impregnation system using the dry powder method in a fluidized bed. The specimens were laminated by compression molding, tensile tested, and their fracture area was analyzed by microscopy. The mechanical performance of the laminates was influenced by the fiber orientation at the different layers. The fibers at 0° conferred high stiffness to the composite, limiting the maximum deformation and promoting failure. The laminates with 0° layers showed a fragile and sudden fracture oriented at 90° to the aplied load, even with low fiber content. The plies oriented at ± 45° balanced the stress and contributed to higher levels of deformation during the test due to fiber rotation toward the loading direction, also, no post-yield stiffening was found as in thermoset composites due to the ductile nature of the thermoplastic matrix; these layers limited the crack propagation in the transverse direction, canceling the in-plane shear stress. The fibers at 90° acted as filler due to poor interface and did not contribute to the improvement of the composite mechanical performance. The evidence shows no delamination in the materials due to the tenacious nature of the thermoplastic matrix, neither saw-toothed or plateau region was found in the stress-strain curves in contrast to thermoset laminates.

ABSTRACT Considering that thiol-containing enzymes like kinases are critical for several metabolic pathways and energy homeostasis, we investigated the effects of cystine dimethyl ester and/or cysteamine administration on kinases crucial for energy metabolism in the kidney of Wistar rats. Animals were injected twice a day with 1.6 µmol/g body weight cystine dimethyl ester and/or 0.26 µmol/g body weight cysteamine from the 16th to the 20th postpartum day and euthanized after 12 hours. Pyruvate kinase, adenylate kinase, creatine kinase activities and thiol/disulfide ratio were determined. Cystine dimethyl ester administration reduced thiol/disulfide ratio and inhibited the kinases activities. Cysteamine administration increased the thiol/disulfide ratio and co-administration with cystine dimethyl ester prevented the inhibition of the enzymes. Regression between the thiol/disulfide ratio, and the kinases activities were significant. These results suggest that redox status may regulate energy metabolism in the rat kidney. If thiol-containing enzymes inhibition and oxidative stress occur in patients with cystinosis, it is possible that lysosomal cystine depletion may not be the only beneficial effect of cysteamine administration, but also its antioxidant and thiol-protector effect.

Abstract

The enhancement mechanism due to the resonant properties of the $\rho$ and $\omega$ mesons, which are close in mass, are analysed when such resonances carry different momenta. Considerations from the particular process where they appear to the individual resonant features are at play for the appearance of the global resonant manifestation. In this work, we first consider the $e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ process. We use the differential cross section at a given angle of emission of one of the pions, to tune the individual features of the two resonances and exhibit how both resonances combine to produce the enhancement. Then, we incorporate the $\rho^\prime$ using the information obtained from the $ e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ total scattering process and show that, it becomes important thanks to the same enhancement mechanism between the $\rho$ and the $\omega$. In a second step, we use a similar approach to describe a model dependent contribution to the $\tau^- \to \pi^-\pi^0\nu_\tau\gamma$ decay, the so-called $\omega$ channel. We show that the dipion invariant mass distribution at particular angles is sensitive to the individual resonant states. We compute the interference of this channel with the known dominant model independent contribution, and show how a better knowledge of the $e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ process can help to properly account for such model dependent effects. Abstract

We report direct observational evidence for a latitudinal dependence of dust cloud opacity in ultracool dwarfs, indicating that equatorial latitudes are cloudier than polar latitudes. These results are based on a strong positive correlation between the viewing geometry and the mid-infrared silicate absorption strength in mid-L dwarfs using mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope and spin axis inclination measurements from available information in the literature. We confirmed that the infrared color anomalies of L dwarfs positively correlate with dust cloud opacity and viewing geometry, where redder objects are inclined equator-on and exhibit more opaque dust clouds while dwarfs viewed at higher latitudes and with more transparent clouds are bluer. These results show the relevance of viewing geometry to explain the appearance of brown dwarfs and provide insight into the spectral diversity observed in substellar and planetary atmospheres. Abstract

Analysis of all archival 5--14 micron spectra of field ultracool dwarfs from the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope has shown that absorption by silicates in the 8--11 micron region is seen in most L-type (1300 K to 2200 K) dwarfs. The absorption is caused by silicate-rich clouds in the atmospheres of L dwarfs and is strongest at L4--L6 spectral types. Herein we compare averages of the mid-infrared silicate absorption signatures of L3--L7 dwarfs that have low ($\lesssim$10$^{4.5}$ cm s$^{-2}$) vs.\ high ($\gtrsim$10$^5$ cm s$^{-2}$) surface gravity. We find that the silicate absorption feature is sensitive to surface gravity and indicates a difference in grain size and composition between dust condensates in young and old mid-L dwarfs. The mean silicate absorption profile of low-gravity mid-L dwarfs matches expectations for $\sim$1 micron-sized amorphous iron- and magnesium-bearing pyroxene (Mg$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$SiO$_3$) grains. High-gravity mid-L dwarfs have silicate absorption better represented by smaller ($\lesssim$0.1 $\mu$m) and more volatile amorphous enstatite (MgSiO$_3$) or SiO grains. This is the first direct spectroscopic evidence for gravity-dependent sedimentation of dust condensates in ultracool atmospheres. Abstract

Esta argumentação tem como objetivo analisar as políticas públicas de recuperação de aprendizagem no que tange às normatizações, leis e algumas teorias pós-modernas existentes, focando a qualidade em Educação como uma condição humana e um direito social. O texto traz o panorama histórico, pós-neoliberal, globalizado, capitalista e social no qual vivemos e as atividades escolares, refletindo por meio da concepção histórico-crítica, a eficiência e eficácia dentro do processo de ensino e aprendizagem valendo-se da prática realizada nas Escolas Municipais de Educação Básica de Franca/SP. Para tanto, esse trabalho valeu-se da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental com a abordagem qualitativa e com a concepção histórico-crítica. Observou-se, com os resultados, a necessidade do tema voltar a ser discutido, ressurgindo na agenda e na pauta do poder público municipal, na pessoa da secretaria de educação, como assunto principal da pasta a fim de melhor reorganizar os instrumentos existentes bem como criar mecanismos e políticas públicas que garantam o sucesso dos alunos que são submetidos ao projeto da recuperação de aprendizagem escolar. Abstract

Este artículo analiza la manera como los productores de lugar de la zona de La Condesa en Ciudad de México la construyen y la posicionan en el imaginario de sus habitantes, expresando este acto de signi cación a par- tir de múltiples conceptos y tensiones que constituyen los elementos más relevantes de su identidad. A partir de una investigación cualitativa de corte etnográ co se concluye que La Condesa se organiza y se cali ca como experiencia de consumo, cultura y entretenimiento a partir de cinco imágenes: la zona de caos, la zona turística y la de moda, la zona de experimentación social, la zona T, y la zona mexicana y la señorial.

96. Model independent analysis of femtoscopic correlation functions: An application to the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$

Abstract

We face the inverse problem of obtaining the interaction between coupled channels from the correlation functions of these channels. We apply the method to the interaction of the $D^0 K^+$, $D^+ K^0$, and $D^+_s \eta$ channels, from where the $D^*_{s0}(2317)$ state emerges. We use synthetic data extracted from an interaction model based on the local hidden gauge approach and find that the inverse problem can determine the existence of a bound state of the system with a precision of about 20 MeV. At the same time, we can determine the isospin nature of the bound state and its compositeness in terms of the channels. Furthermore, we evaluate the scattering length and effective range of all three channels, as well as the couplings of the bound state found to all the components. Lastly, the size parameter of the source function, $R$, which in principle should be a magnitude provided by the experimental teams, can be obtained from a fit to the data with relatively high accuracy. These findings show the value of the correlation function to learn about the meson-meson interaction for systems which are difficult to access in other present facilities., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables: numerical results are updated and table II is added

Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract

Alginates are widely used in tissue engineering technologies, e.g., in cell encapsulation, in drug delivery and various immobilization procedures. The success rates of these studies are highly variable due to different degrees of tissue response. A cause for this variation in success is, among other factors, its content of inflammatory components. There is an urgent need for a technology to test the inflammatory capacity of alginates. Recently, it has been shown that pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) in alginate are potent immunostimulatories. In this article, we present the design and evaluation of a technology platform to assess (i) the immunostimulatory capacity of alginate or its contaminants, (ii) where in the purification process PAMPs are removed, and (iii) which Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and ligands are involved. A THP1 cell-line expressing pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and the co-signaling molecules CD14 and MD2 was used to assess immune activation of alginates during the different steps of purification of alginate. To determine if this activation was mediated by TLRs, a THP1-defMyD88 cell-line was applied. This cell-line possesses a non-functional MyD88 coupling protein, necessary for activating NF-κB via TLRs. To identify the specific TLRs being activated by the PAMPs, we use different human embryonic kidney (HEK) cell-line that expresses only one specific TLR. Finally, specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were applied to identify the specific PAMP. By applying this three-step procedure, we can screen alginate in a manner, which is both labor and cost efficient. The efficacy of the platform was evaluated with an alginate that did not pass our quality control. We demonstrate that this alginate was immunostimulatory, even after purification due to reintroduction of the TLR5 activating flagellin. In addition, we tested two commercially available purified alginates. Our experiments show that these commercial alginates contained peptidoglycan, lipoteichoic acid, flagellin, and even lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The platform presented here can be used to evaluate the efficacy of purification procedures in removing PAMPs from alginates in a cost-efficient manner.

Abstract

Dogs in shelters may be unattended at night. The purpose of this study is to describe the night-time behavior of dogs in a shelter and to determine if artificial light affected their sleeping patterns. Ten dogs were video-recorded under both light and dark conditions and their behavior recorded using focal animal sampling. The dogs were lying down 649 ± 40 min (mean ± SD) in the light condition and 629 ± 58 min in the dark condition each night. They awoke, stood up, turned around and then lay down again every 48 to 50 min. There was no significant difference in time spent lying between the two conditions (p > 0.05). Light did not seem to affect their behavior. The conclusion is that dogs in shelters may sleep in the absence of people and that light does not disrupt their sleep patterns.

Abstract

Soft, untethered microrobots composed of biocompatible materials for completing micromanipulation and drug delivery tasks in lab-on-a-chip and medical scenarios are currently being developed. Alginate holds significant potential in medical microrobotics due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and drug encapsulation capabilities. Here, we describe the synthesis of MANiACs—Magnetically Aligned Nanorods in Alginate Capsules—for use as untethered microrobotic surface tumblers, demonstrating magnetically guided lateral tumbling via rotating magnetic fields. MANiAC translation is demonstrated on tissue surfaces as well as inclined slopes. These alginate microrobots are capable of manipulating objects over millimeter-scale distances. Finally, we demonstrate payload release capabilities of MANiACs during translational tumbling motion.
