The lack of synthesized information regarding biodiversity is a major problem among researchers, leading to a pervasive cycle where ecologists make field campaigns to collect information that already exists and yet has not been made available for a broader audience. This problem leads to long-lasting effects in public policies such as spending money multiple times to conduct similar studies in the same area. We aim to identify this knowledge gap by synthesizing information available regarding two Brazilian long-term biodiversity programs and the metadata generated by them. Using a unique dataset containing 1904 metadata, we identified patterns of metadata distribution and intensity of research conducted in Brazil, as well as where we should concentrate research efforts in the next decades. We found that the majority of metadata were about vertebrates, followed by plants, invertebrates, and fungi. Caatinga was the biome with least metadata, and that there's still a lack of information regarding all biomes in Brazil, with none of them being sufficiently sampled. Groundwater aquifers are ecological hotspots with diverse microbes essential for biogeochemical cycles. Their ecophysiology has seldom been studied on a basin scale. In particular, our knowledge of chemosynthesis in the deep aquifers where temperatures reach 60 °C, is limited. Here, we investigated the diversity, activity, and metabolic potential of microbial communities from nine wells reaching ancient groundwater beneath Israel's Negev Desert, spanning two significant, deep (up to 1.5 km) aquifers, the Judea Group carbonate and Kurnub Group Nubian sandstone that contain fresh to brackish, hypoxic to anoxic water. We estimated chemosynthetic productivity rates ranging from 0.55 ± 0.06 to 0.82 ± 0.07 µg C L -1 d -1 (mean ± SD), suggesting that aquifer productivity may be underestimated. We showed that 60% of MAGs harbored genes for autotrophic pathways, mainly the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle and the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, indicating a substantial chemosynthetic capacity within these microbial communities. We emphasize the potential metabolic versatility in the deep subsurface, enabling efficient carbon and energy use. Circumstantial evidence has suggested that jellyfish swarms impair the operation of seawater reverse osmosis desalination facilities. However, only limited information is currently available on the pretreatment efficiency of jellyfish and their effects on reverse osmosis (RO) membrane performance. Here, we have comprehensively tested the pretreatment efficiency of a dual-media gravity filter and cartridge micro-filtration following the addition of jellyfish into the feedwater. Concurrently, the fouling propensity and performance of the RO membranes were examined. We show that jellyfish demise resulted in seawater eutrophication that triggered a significant increase in bacterial biomass (∼50-fold), activity (∼7-fold), and release of transparent exopolymer particles (∼5-fold), peaking three days after the addition of jellyfish into the feedwater. In parallel, a significant reduction in permeate water flux was recorded (∼10%) while trans-membrane pressure sharply increased (15%), reaching the operation pressure limit of our system (75 bar) after five days. At the conclusion of the experiments, the membrane surface was heavily covered by large chunks of organic-rich material and multilayered biofilms. Our results provide a holistic view on the operational challenges of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination triggered by jellyfish swarms in coastal areas. Following the above, it can be inferred that freshwater production will likely be halted three days after drawing the jellyfish into the pretreatment system. Recent studies have indicated that heterotrophic diazotrophs are highly diverse and fix N 2 in aquatic environments with potentially adverse conditions for diazotrophy, such as oxic and rich in total nitrogen. In this study, we compared the activity and diversity of heterotrophic diazotrophs associated with aggregates (>12 μm) to free-living cells in the eutrophic Qishon River during the winter and summer seasons. Overall, measured heterotrophic N 2 fixation rates in the Qishon River ranged between 2.6-3.5 nmol N L -1 d -1 . Heterotrophic N 2 fixation was mainly associated with aggregates in the summer samples (74 ± 24%), whereas during the winter the bulk diazotrophic activity was mostly ascribed to the free-living fraction (90 ± 6%). In addition, immunolabeled micrographs indicated the presence of aggregate-associated heterotrophic diazotrophs in both seasons, while phototrophic diazotrophs were also captured during the winter. The richness of free-living and aggregate-associated heterotrophic diazotrophs were overall similar, yet the evenness of the later was significantly smaller, suggesting that few of the species gained advantage from particle lifestyle. The differences in the activity, micro-localization and diversity of the diazotrophic community were mostly attributed to spatiotemporal changes in the ambient C : N ratios (total organic carbon, TOC: total nitrogen) and the TOC concentrations. The authors present a unique case of chronic persisting hematoma formation at the site of a remote congenital melanocytic nevus excision with tissue expander reconstruction. Similarities between chronic persisting hematoma and chronic encapsulated seroma are addressed to provide guidance on the appropriate workup and management for the plastic surgeon. Sewage outbursts affect coastal environments as seawater is enriched with nutrients, organic matter and microbes, thus can potentially impair seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination. In this study, we evaluated how municipal sewage outbursts affect SWRO desalination in a pilot-scale system. To this end, feedwater characteristics (i.e., coastal water), the removal efficiency of organic foulants by a dual-media gravity filter, and cartridge micro-filtration were determined daily for 12 days. Permeate water flux was maintained constant during the study, while trans-membrane pressure (TMP) was automatically adjusted and continuously monitored. The results indicate that sewage outbursts caused an immediate (∼1 d) buildup of phyto/bacterioplankton biomass (up to 10-fold), and enhanced activity (maximal 30-fold) followed by an increase in transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) concentrations. After sewage addition, algal biomass was significantly removed by the pretreatment system (72-90%), while a considerable fraction of the bacterial biomass (42-65%) and TEP (53-65%) passed these procedures. The result was a negative impact on the desalination performance reflected by a significant increase (> 10%) in RO-TMP 7.5 d after the sewage addition. Our results indicate on a direct link between sewage outbursts, pretreatment efficiency, and SWRO desalination. Planktonic heterotrophic diazotrophs (N 2 -fixers) are widely distributed in marine and freshwater systems, yet limited information is available on their activity, especially in environments with adverse conditions for diazotrophy (e.g., N-rich and oxygenated). Here, we followed the localization and activity of heterotrophic diazotrophs in the hyper-eutrophic N-rich Qishon River-an environment previously considered to be unfavorable for diazotrophy. Our results indicate high heterotrophic N 2 fixation rates (up to 6.9 nmol N L -1 d -1 ), which were approximately three fold higher at an upstream location (freshwater) compared to an estuary (brackish) site. Further, active heterotrophic diazotrophs were capture associated with free-floating aggregates by a newly developed immunolocalization approach. These findings provide new insights on the activity of heterotrophic diazotrophs on aggregates in environments previously considered with adverse conditions for diazotrophy. N 2 fixation by planktonic heterotrophic diazotrophs is more wide spread than previously thought, including environments considered "unfavorable" for diazotrophy. These environments include a substantial fraction of the aquatic biosphere such as eutrophic estuaries with high ambient nitrogen concentrations and oxidized aphotic water. Different studies suggested that heterotrophic diazotrophs associated with aggregates may promote N 2 fixation in such environments. However, this association was never validated directly and relies mainly on indirect relationships and different statistical approaches. Here, we identified, for the first time, a direct link between active heterotrophic diazotrophs and aggregates that comprise polysaccharides. Our new staining method combines fluorescent tagging of active diazotrophs by nitrogenase-immunolabeling, polysaccharides staining by Alcian blue or concanavalin-A, and total bacteria via nucleic-acid staining. Concomitant to N 2 fixation rates and bacterial activity, this new method provided specific localization of heterotrophic diazotrophs on artificial and natural aggregates. We postulate that the insights gained by this new visualization approach will have a broad significance for future research on the aquatic nitrogen cycle, including environments in which diazotrophy has traditionally been overlooked.

This paper discusses the reasons why evidence of clinical effectiveness is not enough to facilitate adequate adoption of robotic technologies for upper-limb neurorehabilitation. The paper also provides a short review of the state of the art technologies. In particular, the paper highlights the barriers to the adoption of these technologies by the markets in which they are, or should be, deployed. On the other hand, the paper explores how low rates of adoption may depend on communication biases between the producers of the technologies and potential adopters. Finally, it is shown that, although technology-efficacy issues are usually well-documented, barriers to adoption also originate from the lack of solid evidence of the economic implications of the new technologies.

The importance of Knowledge Management (KM) to organisations in today's competitive environment is being recognised as paramount and significant. This is particularly evident for healthcare both globally and in the USA. The US healthcare system is facing numerous challenges in trying to deliver cost effective, high quality treatments and is turning to KM techniques and technologies for solutions in an attempt to achieve this goal. We examine this by outlining the primary barriers encountered in the adoption and implementation of specific KM technologies in healthcare settings and then examine these in the context of an orthopaedic case vignette. In doing so, we show the benefit of KM tools and techniques for enhancing healthcare delivery.

Whilst healthcare is the biggest service industry on the globe, it has yet to realise the full potential of the e-business revolution in the form of e-health. This is due to many reasons including the fact that the healthcare industry is faced with many complex challenges in trying to deliver cost-effective, high-value, accessible healthcare and has traditionally been slow to embrace new business techniques and technologies. Given that e-health, to a great extent, is a macro level concern that has far reaching micro level implications, this paper firstly develops a framework to assess a country's preparedness with respect to embracing e-health (the application of e-commerce to healthcare) and from this an e-health preparedness grid to facilitate the assessment of any e-health initiative. Taken together, the integrative framework and preparedness grid provide useful and necessary tools to enable successful e-health initiatives to ensue by helping country and/or an organisation within a country to identify and thus address areas that require further attention in order for it to undertake a successful e-health initiative.

Ethics and economics are not mutually exclusive, but rather related concepts that help the human race in dealing with scarce resources. Safeguarding the resources employed and making a profit are general industrial objectives. Product-specific objectives, such as optimising medicinal safety and creating benefits for the individual and society, are discussed. Healing disease, improving quality of life and prolonging length of life are very important considerations. The contributions of the pharmaceutical industry in fulfilling ethically based demands will be primarily treated as the careful use of resources (e.g. by renunciation of state support). Other ethical contributions are the early communication of research results for intersectoral use and a voluntary code of conduct to regulate the actions of pharmaceutical companies with regard to information and advertising. In the Third World pharmaceutical industry is mainly faced to potential waste of valuable medicines, due to insufficient infrastructure of logistics and distribution capacities in one region, given a shortage of these very medicines in other and better structured regions. The value of medicines is defined by a comparison of competing therapies (difference in consumption of resources). Possible ethical deficiencies arising from a lack of direct contact of the patient with industry and the quasi-penalisation of patients because of faulty lifestyle are briefly discussed.

A model of medical technology is proposed, containing six different perspectives of its definition: physical, information, knowledge, process, change, and as an enabling and strategic resource. These perspectives are integrated to form an organizational dimension. The contributions of this model to better management of medical technology are described and its relation to other models in the literature is discussed.

The authors describe the development of an educational database project designed to promote the accessibility of nursing administration theses data for graduate students and faculty in a university nursing administration program. The roles of a nursing faculty member, a computer laboratory administrator, and a programmer are detailed as they work together from the concept phase of the project through its evaluation. The results of their combined efforts provided a reliable and efficient database, resulted in a closer interdisciplinary relationship, and allowed valuable nursing research information to be shared more widely within the university.

We report on a case of polyorchidism that presented as testicular torsion. A brief history and review of the literature is also presented. Of the 47 cases reported, this patient is the youngest.
