51. Modelling the hydrological interactions between a fissured granite aquifer and a valley mire in the Massif Central, France.

Abstract

The contribution of groundwater to the hydrology of hard rock regions has long been assumed to be small. This is being progressively challenged and conceptual hydrological models of headwater wetlands in these regions may need to be revised. We developed a high-resolution MIKE SHE / MIKE 11 model of a 231.3 ha headwater catchment in the granitic uplands of the French Massif Central to estimate the contribution of groundwater upwelling to the water balance of the Dauges mire, an acidic valley mire of international importance for nature conservation. We estimated that groundwater upwelling from the underlying granite weathering formations - mostly an approximately 55m deep fissured zone - provides 27.1 % of total long-term inflows to the mire. This contribution increases to 37.2 % in September when total inflows are small. Overland boundary inflow accounts for an average of 40.2 % of total inflows. However most of this originates from groundwater seepage through mineral soils along the mire margins or in small unchannelized valleys upslope of the mire. A sensitivity analysis showed that model performance in terms of the simulation of mire groundwater levels was most sensitive to parameters describing the mineral soils and granite weathered formations rather than the overlying peat layer. Variation partitioning showed that groundwater upwelling was the most important factor driving simulated monthly groundwater table depth within the mire. Sustained groundwater upwelling maintains the mire water table close to or at ground level for most of the year. As a result, precipitation and overland boundary inflows are mostly evacuated as saturation-excess runoff. There was close agreement between the observed distribution of mire habitats and areas where the simulated long-term groundwater seepage rate was larger than zero in September. Groundwater upwelling from the underlying weathered formations can be a quantitatively important and functionally critical element of the water balance of valley mires in granitic headwater catchments. Abstract

The METAFORET experiment was designed to demonstrate that complex wave physics phenomena classically observed at the meso- and microscales in acoustics and in optics also apply at the geophysics scale. In particular, the experiment shows that a dense forest of trees can behave as a locally resonant metamaterial for seismic surface waves. The dense arrangement of trees anchored into the ground creates anomalous dispersion curves for surface waves, which highlight a large frequency band-gap around one resonant frequency of the trees, at ∼45 Hz. This demonstration is carried out through the deployment of a dense seismic array of ∼1000 autonomous geophones providing seismic recordings under vibrating source excitation at the transition between an open field and a forest. Additional geophysical equipment was deployed (e.g. ground-penetrating radar, velocimeters on trees) to provide essential complementary measurements. Insights and interpretations on the observed seismic wavefield, including the attenuation length, the intensity ratio between the field and the forest and the surface wave polarization, are validated with 2-D numerical simulations of trees over a layered half-space. Abstract

International audience; Passive seismic interferometry takes advantage of natural ambient seismic noise generated by the wind, the storms and the human activities (e.g. cars, trains and hereafter pumps) to recover the slight variations of the seismic wave velocity induced by changes in the groundwater level. Here we compare the seismic measurements with actual piezometric data acquired on the Crépieux-Charmy (Lyon, France) groundwater exploitation field. We show the excellent correspondance between variations in the groundwater level and seismic velocity variations. We present hereafter the time and space monitoring of an hydraulic dome formed to prevent biological and chemical pollutions to enter the exploitation field. The horizontal resolution is solely limited by the number of seismic stations used, and is about 30 m in the present study. The vertical resolution of seismic measurement is impaired by spurious artifacts linked to the intermittent sources of noise. In average, the sensitivity of the seismic velocity change corresponds to a 50 cm change of waterlevel. This study confirms the possibility of groundwater monitoring in an industrial context with ambient seismic noise.

Abstract

International audience; Mimic near-surface seismic field measurements at a small scale, in the laboratory, under a well-controlled environment, may lead to a better understanding of wave propagation in complex media such as in geological materials. Laboratory experiments can help in particular to constrain and refine theoretical and numerical modelling of physical phenomena occurring during seismic propagation, in order to make a better use of the complete set of measurements recorded in the field. We have developed a laser Doppler vibrometer (laser interferometry) platform designed to measure non-contact seismic displacements (or velocities) of a surface. This technology enables to measure displacements as small as a tenth of a nanometer on a wide range of frequencies, from a few tenths to a few megahertz. Our experimental setup is particularly suited to provide high-density spatial and temporal records of displacements on the edge of any vibrating material (aluminum, limestone, ...). We will firstly present experiments in cuboid and cylinders of aluminum (homogeneous) in order to calibrate the seismic sources (radiation diagram, frequency content) and identify the wave arrivals (P, S, converted, surface waves). The measurements will be compared quantitatively to a direct 2D numerical elastodynamic simulation (finite elements, Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin). We will then show wave measurements performed in cylindrical heterogeneous limestone cores of typical diameter size around 10 cm. Tomographic images of velocity (figure 2a) in 2D slices of the limestone cores will be derived based upon the time of first arrivals and implemented in the numerical model. By quantifying the difference between numerical and experimental results, the tomographic velocity model will be reciprocally improved and finally compared to a X − ray tomographic image of that slice. A brief overview of the studies Seismic sources We will explore piezo-electric sources of different frequencies (100 kHZ ∼ 5 M Hz) and test the new laser ablation source whose dominant frequency can reach 2 M Hz in aluminium. Avantages and drawbacks of each technology will be discussed in terms of source and wave propagation characterisation. Wave identification in an aluminium cube of side length 280 mm and seismic source at the center of one face We have identified experimentally P, S, head wave, PS, SP and surface waves measured on the cube surfaces. Meanwhile, direct numerical simulations have helped to quantitatively analyze the kinematics of wave fronts. For example, on the surface where the seismic source is excited, a P front, an S front and a PS head wave front are measured by the laser vibrometer right after the initial seismic impulse. These wavefronts can be understood by both the Huygens' Principle and the Snell-Descartes Law. In Figure 1, the seismic source excits simultaneously at time t = 0 a P wave and an S wave. As time evolves, waves propagate inside the volume and a P-wave propagates along the boundary as well: the latter one acts on the boundary as secondary sources which will emit both P and S waves, creating finally a new PS head wave front nicely measured in the experiments. The colours of magenta and green correspond to null amplitudes.

The laser vibrometer measurements will be first validated in homogeneous materials cylinders by comparing the measurements to a direct numerical simulation. Special attention will be given to the comparison of experimental versus numerical amplitudes of displacements. In a second step, we will conduct the same type of study through heterogeneous carbonate cores, possibly fractured. Tomographic images of velocity in 2D slices of the carbonate core will be derived based upon on the time of first arrival. Preliminary attempts of tomographic attenuation maps will also be presented based on the amplitudes of first arrivals. Experimental records will be confronted to direct numerical simulations and tomographic images will be compared to x-ray scanner imaging of the cylindrical cores.

Abstract

International audience; As originally described by Biot in 1956, seismic propagation in fluid-filled porous media should include two longitudinal contributions: the fast and slow P waves, the latest being commonly referred to as the ‘Biot slow wave’. This seismic wave has been seldom observed in natural rocks at laboratory frequencies due to its low amplitude properties and has never been recognized at seismic frequencies due to its diffusive properties. In porous media, a part of seismic energy may also be converted into electromagnetic fields by a coupling phenomenon of electrokinetic nature: the so-called seismoelectric effect. Most seismoelectric studies focus on the observation of co-seismic or depth-converted electric fields generated by the propagation of fast P-waves, mainly to detect or to image new physico-chemical contrasts. Based on Pride’s theory (1994), numerical modeling of seismo-electromagnetic wave propagation suggests that the observation of the Biot slow wave could be boosted by its electrokinetic conversion, i.e. that it would be easier to record the electric fields accompanying Biot slow waves generated by a mechanical source rather than the seismic fields. In order to confirm these numerical predictions, we designed a specific laboratory experiment involving a silica sand tank excited by using a homemade pneumatic seismic source. The investigated frequency range [0.5-5kHz] contains the Biot (transition) frequency separating the diffusive from the propagation regimes of the slow wave. Numerical seismoelectromagnetic experiments were also performed at this scale to compute the seismoelectric response in homogeneous and partially saturated sand with this acquisition configuration. The comparison of these experimental data to numerical results provides new perspectives for the detection, study and potential use of the Biot slow wave.

Abstract

International audience; Seismoelectromagnetic conversions are induced through electrokinetic phenomena occurring when passing seismic waves induce relative fluid to solid displacements. Information on porous material properties provided by the type I coseismic electric field accompanying surface and body waves is limited to the vicinity of the electrical receivers, as opposed to the type II electromagnetic interface response (IR) which can help detect porous contrasts and/or fluid changes within the subsurface 'at depth'. For general field geometries, the problem is that type II disturbances exhibit lower amplitudes than type I fields and are difficult to access directly. Hence, separating both types of waves is a critical step when processing seismoelectric data. Synthetic seismograms and electrograms, generated with a full-waveform seismoelectric forward modelling code written by Garambois & Dietrich, enabled us to study the behaviour of the IR's characteristic dipolar amplitude pattern recovered through filtering. The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com To better preserve the IR amplitudes, we have developed a new filtering strategy based on the Fast Discrete Curvelet Transform. Seismic or seismoelectric wave fronts can be optimall described using this multiscale decomposition over multidirectional anisotropic needle-shape structures. We have built a mask in the curvelet domain zeroing out seismoelectric samples corresponding to non-zero samples from the accelerogram, thus taking advantage of the relationship between seismic and seismoelectric waves for type I fields. This mask consists of a threshold function combined with a Gaussian distribution promoting horizontal (i.e. zero- slowness) directions. When applied to synthetic data, this filter enabled to successfully extract the IR although less altering its dipolar radiation pattern than the conventional dip-based techniques. This strategy was successfully applied to a seismoelectric data set acquired in sedimentary deposits, and permitted to isolate an IR generated at the water table.

Abstract

International audience; In the presence of a thin-bed, i.e., when a layer is thin compared to the wavelength of the seismic or electromagnetic signal propagating through it, it is impossible to detect and individualize reflections coming from the two surfaces forming the thin layer. In this case, multiple reflections coming from the two sides of the bed create interferences and generate complex reflection patterns. When multioffset data are available, Amplitude Variations of reflectivity according to Offset (AVO) have been increasingly used in seismic interpretation and more recently tested on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data. Phase and frequency sensitivities of the reflected signals are generally not used, although they contain useful information. The present study proposes an original inversion methodology designed for 1D media and denoted DAPVO (Dispersion of Amplitude and Phases Versus Offset curves). It combines all reflectivity properties (amplitude, phase and dispersion) of a reflected GPR signal generated by a thin-bed embedded within a homogeneous material, a situation often encountered in fractured media, for example. Dispersive properties of the dielectric permittivity of investigated materials (homogeneous formation, thin bed) are described using a Jonscher parameterization, which permitted study of the sensitivity of amplitude and phase variations with offset (APVO) curves on frequency and thin-bed properties (filling nature, aperture). We discuss and illustrate using synthetics the simplifying assumptions and careful corrections which are necessary to convert raw Common Mid-Point (CMP) reflected data into dispersive APVO curves. In particular, the propagation and radiation pattern corrections are made within the inversion process for all tested models of the search grid, which is based on the neighbourhood algorithm strategy. Within this work we notably show with various analytical data (different apertures and fillings) that the inversion process is efficient to provide not only the properties of the thin-bed, but also its depth and the properties of the surrounding homogeneous soil. This approach was successful thanks to the introduction of the dispersion characteristics, which restrict non-uniqueness problems potentially encountered when only AVO curves are used. Finally, all the methodology is successfully applied to a synthetic and to two real CMP GPR datasets, which were acquired along a vertical limestone cliff. It allowed extracting the characteristics of various subvertical fractures (filling, aperture) with satisfying resolution and confidence. The study motivates interest to combine dispersion dependency of the reflection coefficient variations with classical AVO analyses for any thin-bed characterization. The inversion strategy presented here is restricted on a single reflected event embedded within a homogeneous formation. In order to develop this approach to potential other applications, when various reflected events are present and/or when properties do vary laterally (2D media), a combination of velocity model building by Full-Waveform Inversion and high resolution Reverse-Time-Migration is currently investigated.

Abstract

The stability of a potentially unstable rock mass strongly depends on the discontinuity pattern and the face topography. Basic geological analysis could provide useful structural information but suffers from the lack of information on discontinuities at depth. Of major importance is the persistence of discontinuities inside the mass. Several geophysical methods (seismic, electric and electromagnetic) are available to address this problem, differing in sensitivity, resolution and depth penetration. The purpose of the chapter is to present the common structural and geophysical methods for characterizing the rock mass. Section 2 is dedicated to a review of the main geophysical parameters and the properties of the main geophysical methods, as well as their possibilities and limitations for discontinuity detection and characterization. In section 3, applications of the aforementioned methods are shown for three limestone cliff sites located around Grenoble (French Alps), exhibiting different geometrical and geotechnical features.

Abstract

The presence of a thin layer embedded in any formation creates complex reflection patterns because of interferences within the thin bed. Amplitude variation with offset (AVO) is used increasingly in seismic interpretation and has been tested more recently on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data to characterize nonaqueous-phase liquid contaminants. In those analyses, phase and dispersion properties of the reflected signals generally are omitted, although they contain useful information. An inversion methodology to examine thin-bed properties -- dispersive amplitude and phase versus offset (DAPVO) -- combines all reflectivity properties (amplitude, phase, and dispersion) of the reflected GPR signal generated by a thin bed embedded within a homogeneous material. A brief description of electromagnetic (EM) phenomena is presented. The dispersive properties of the dielectric permittivity of investigated materials can be described using a Jonscher parameterization, which allows the study of the dependency of amplitude and phase versus offset (APVO) curves on the frequency of thin-bed properties (filling nature, aperture). Simplifying assumptions and using careful corrections are necessary to convert raw common-midpoint (CMP) reflected data into DAPVO curves and to study the propagation and radiation-pattern corrections. The inversion methodology is explained and validated to a synthetic set of CMP GPR data and can be illustrated with a real CMP data set acquired along a vertical cliff. This allows for extraction of the characteristics of a subvertical fracture while simultaneously satisfying resolution and confidence. Such a study motivates interest in combining the dispersion dependency of the reflection-coefficient variations with classical AVO analysis for thin-bed characterization.

Abstract

International audience; Seismic wave propagation in fluid-filled porous materials induces electromagnetic effects due to small relative pore-fluid motions. In order to detect the seismo-magnetic couplings theoretically predicted by Pride (1994), we have designed a small-scale experiment in a low-noise underground laboratory which presents exceptional electromagnetic shielding conditions. Our experiment included accelerometers, electric dipoles and induction magnetometers to characterize the seismo-electromagnetic propagation phenomena. To assess the electrokinetic origin of the measured electric and magneticfields, we compared records obtained in dry and fluid-filled sand. Extra care has been taken to ensure the mechanical decoupling between the sand column and the magnetometers to avoid spurious vibrations of the magnetometers and misinterpretations of the recorded signals. Our results show that seismo-electric and seismo-magnetic signals are associated with different wave propagation modes, thus emphasizing the electrokinetic origin of these effects.

Abstract

Electrokinetic coupling phenomena created at the microscopic scale by the passage of seismic waves through fluid-saturated porous media generate conversions between seismic and electromagnetic energy which can be observed at the macroscopic scale. We have studied these coupling effects, both experimentally and theoretically, in order to assess their potential use for the detection and characterization of the fluid contents of superficial porous media. We first present a series of field experiments designed to record the transient electric fields generated by a seismic perturbation of the medium. These experiments were performed with a set of geophones and electric dipoles connected to a multichannel seismic acquisition system. After removal of the powerline noise by adaptive filtering, two different seismo-electric effects were identified: i) a dominant effect in the form of an electric field which accompanies and mimics the seismic waves, and ii), small-amplitude precursory electromagnetic disturbances showing a polarity reversaI on either side of the shot point, with little or no moveout along the receiver array. Next, we address the theoretical aspects of the coupled propagation of seismic and electromagnetic waves in saturated porous media by using the governing equations derived by Pride (1994), which combine the Biot theory and Maxwell equations via transport equations. We have implemented these equations in a numerical simulation code in order to generate synthetic seismograms, electrograms and magnetograms in stratified porous media. This numerical modeling code allowed us to perform detailed investigations of the seismo-electric effects, to interpret our field data, and to give prominence to the potential applications of a simultaneous recording of the seismic, electric and magnetic wavefields for the characterization of near-surface porous layers., Les phénomènes électrocinétiques créés à l'échelle microscopique par le passage d'ondes sismiques à travers des milieux poreux saturés en fluides génèrent des conversions entre énergies sismique et électromagnétique observables à l'échelle macroscopique. Nous avons étudié ces couplages à la fois sur un plan expérimental et théorique dans le but de déterminer leur utilisation potentielle pour la détection et la caractérisation du contenu en fluides des milieux poreux superficiels. Nous présentons dans un premier temps une série d'expériences de terrain effectuées pour enregistrer, à l'aide d'antennes électriques reliées à un système d'acquisition sismique multitrace, les champs électriques transitoires générés par une perturbation sismique du milieu. Après atténuation du bruit généré par les lignes à haute tension grâce à des filtres adaptés, deux effets sismo-électriques ont été identifiés: i) un champ électrique dominant qui accompagne les ondes slsmiques, et ii), des perturbations électromagnétiques précursives, de faIble amplitude, présentant une inversion de polarité de part et d'autre de la source sismique avec peu ou pas de décalage temporel le long du dispositif récepteur. Par la suite, nous détaillons les aspects théoriques de la propagation couplée des ondes sismiques et électromagnétiques dans des milieux poreux saturés en utilisant les équations obtenues par Pride (1994), qui combinent la théorie de Biot aux équations de Maxwell via des équations de transport. Nous avons résolu ces équations à l'aide d'un programme de simulation numérique dans le but de générer des sismogrammes, des électrogrammes et des magnétogrammes synthétiques. Ceci nous a permis d'étudier de manière détaillée les effets sismo-électriques, d'interpréter nos données et de mettre en évidence des applications potentielles d'enregistrements simultanés des champs d'ondes sismiques, électriques et magnétiques pour la caractérisation des couches poreuses superficielles.

92. Frequency‐domain modelling and inversion of electromagnetic data for 2D permittivity and conductivity imaging: An application to the Institut Fresnel experimental dataset

Abstract

The need for quantitative imaging of the near subsurface leads to the development of inversion algorithms to infer ground properties from recorded data. The aim of this study is to validate an inversion method recently developed for the simultaneous imaging of dielectric permittivity and electrical conductivity from 2D ground‐penetrating radar measurements. The validation is performed using electromagnetic data collected in a well‐controlled laboratory environment. In this experiment, the knowledge of the targets enables a quality control of the inversion results. In addition, the free space environment and the measurement of the incident field simplify the choice of a starting model for the inversion, as well as the calibration of the data with respect to the source signature and to the geometrical spread. To perform accurate and efficient forward simulations, we use a frequency‐domain finite‐difference scheme whose stencil coefficients can be optimized for each simulated frequency. As the objects of interest are locally concentrated at the centre of the acquisition array, it is possible to restrict the computation domain to a small region enclosing the targets using an integral representation of the analytical incident field coming from the sources and of the scattered field that we analytically propagate towards the receivers. An analysis of the numerical errors done on synthetic data shows that this strategy provides an error level that is low enough not to perturb the inversion, while dramatically decreasing the computational cost compared to a full‐domain simulation. The monoparameter reconstruction of a purely dielectric target recovers permittivity values in very good agreement with the expected ones, as well as a very satisfying data fit. We also validate our strategy for multiparameter inversion on targets involving both a purely dielectric cylinder and a purely metallic copper tube, although the optimization cannot recover the exact conductivity of copper.

93. Investigating water distribution in the Luitel Lake peat bog using MRS, ERT and GPR

Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a geophysical study of water distribution in the peat bog at Luitel Lake. The goal of the study was to determine water distribution within the bog, which is part of a protected nature preserve. The small peat bog (17 ha) provides a good test site for developing and testing surface geophysical methods. For this study we used magnetic resonance sounding (MRS), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground‐penetrating radar (GPR). Because the water distribution in the bog is a 2D target for MRS, we had to develop a measuring procedure and 2D inversion routine for MRS. The fieldwork consisted in establishing seventeen MRS stations and conducting three ERT profiles and one GPR line. The MRS, ERT and GPR results on the reservoir geometry correlated well with each other. Pine and birch trees cover most of the bog surface but they have not yet populated the centre of the bog, the location where the maximum water content was observed. This result agrees well with vegetation distribution in the study area: at the centre of the bog, vegetation is typical of a swampy environment but outside the centre the vegetation is typical of a forest. According to MRS, the water content of the peat formation at the centre of the bog is 60–70%, whereas GPR estimated the water content to be between 64–70%. Outside the centre, MRS showed the water content of the peat to be about 30%.

94. Seismic monitoring in the Gugla rock glacier (Switzerland): ambient noise correlation, microseismicity and modelling

Abstract

A network of seismometers has been installed on the Gugla rock glacier since October 2015 to estimate seismic velocity changes and detect microseismicity. These two processes are related to mechanical and structural variations occurring within the rock glacier. Seismic monitoring thus allows a better understanding of the dynamics of rock glaciers throughout the year. We observed seasonal variations in seismic wave velocity and microseismic activity over the 3 yr of the study. In the first part of our analysis, we used ambient noise correlations to compute daily changes of surface wave velocity. In winter, seismic wave velocities were higher, probably due to refreezing of the permafrost active layer and cooling of the uppermost permafrost layers, leading to increased overall rigidity of the medium. This assumption was verified using a seismic model of wave propagation that estimates the depth of P- and S-wave velocity changes from 0 down to 10 m. During melting periods, both a sudden velocity decrease and a decorrelation of the seismic responses were observed. These effects can probably be explained by the increased water content of the active layer. In the second part of our study, we focused on detecting microseismic signals generated in and around the rock glacier. This seismic activity (microquakes and rockfalls) also exhibits seasonal variations, with a maximum in spring and summer, which correlates principally with an exacerbated post-winter erosional phase of the front and a faster rock glacier displacement rate. In addition, we observed short bursts of microseismicity, both during snowfall and during rapid melting periods, probably due to pore pressure increase.

Abstract

When seismic pressure waves propagate through the subsurface they can excite ‘seismoelectric’ (SE) signals via electrokinetic coupling. These SE signals are sensitive towards poroelastic as well as electrical properties while providing the resolutions of seismic measurements. They might therefore add information to conventional geophysical measurements. SE signals are generally divided into coseismic waves and interface responses (IRs). The coseismic waves are bound to seismic waves and can therefore only reveal information about the direct vicinity of the recording stations. Interface Responses (IRs) are excited when the (co)seismic waves cross electric or hydraulic discontinuities. They are sensitive to the rocks' porosity and permeability as well as the salinity and viscosity of the pore fluids. As they propagate independently from the seismic fields they can contain information from interfaces further away from the recording stations. Therefore, IRs are usually the main focus of SE investigations. The goal of this thesis is to investigate SE signals generated by earthquakes with a special focus on the detection, analysis and interpretation of these signals. While coseismic signals have been observed during earthquakes, IRs have yet to be detected. In the first part of this thesis distance-magnitude-thresholds are established that quantify the possibility to observe SE signals from earthquakes. Based on over 16,000 events we found that 67 % of earthquakes with magnitude M ≥ 2.3·log10(r/km) at hypocentral distance r showed clear SE signals if the noise level is below 0.1 μV/m. Furthermore we confirmed the site-dependency of SE earthquake signals recorded in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile by comparing seismic and SE envelopes and introducing SE spectral ratios (SESRs) as a new concept to evaluate the influence of IRs on SE signals in the frequency domain. The concept of SESRs is explained in the second part of this thesis in more detail. We approximated a SESR calculated from field data through synthetic modelling with the help of an inversion algorithm. The calculations implied that the shape of the SESR is primarily influenced by IRs generated in the first few hundred meters of the subsurface and that a sensitivity exists towards to the rock's porosity, the pore-fluid's salinity and the depth of the interfaces that generate IRs. Last but not least, the response of numerical SE signals to a multi-layered subsurface model was analysed, simulating a possible passive SE field experiment on the Armutlu Peninsula in Turkey. The results showed that the chance to identify single IRs in a SE wavetrain is highest if the recording stations are placed close to the epicenter of the earthquakes. Through the analysis of SESRs and SE envelopes, porosity and salinity changes in the upper subsurface could be detected. Nevertheless, depending on the local noise level the estimated small amplitudes of the field data will provide a challenge. All in all, the investigations of this thesis showed that SE signals can be detected in a limited radius from the hypocenter if the magnitudes of the earthquakes are large enough for the generated SE amplitudes to overcome the anthropogenic noise-level. The detection radius thereby depends on the observation target (IRs or coseismic signals). If the signal-to-noise ratio is sufficient, SESRs as well as envelope analysis could be used to detect porosity and salinity changes in the first few hundred meters of the subsurface, although the results have probably to be constrained by previous information. Field measurements are now required to verify the findings of this thesis.
