56. Customized Design of Frequency-Selective Surfaces Using the Vector-Graph-Feature-Extraction Deep-Neural-Network (VGFE-DNN) Method

Abstract

In this communication, we propose the vector-graph-feature-extraction (VGFE) approach to accurately and concisely characterize details of electromagnetic metasurface (EM), and then train a progressive deep neural network (DNN), which can realize accurate prediction of complex electromagnetic spectrums from precise EM structures, or vice versa. Compared with the traditional neural-network-assisted design of metasurface structures, the VGFE-DNN method ensures comprehensive coverage of graphical features of metasurface and simplifies the number of feature extraction parameters at the same time, which can cover the complex and diverse surface structure designs with a smaller number of parameters. It offers strong adaptability and versatility by flexibly altering the electromagnetic spectrums and parameter combinations according to the needs of design objectives. The multifrequency point FSS design was realized as an example. A DNN was built up and trained by 6000 random combinations of parameters with an average error of 4%. After VGFE-DNN training, a variety combination of different spectral widths, different numbers, and location of frequency points can be easily customized, while maintaining angular stability and high light transmittance. The FSS structures with one to five frequency points were designed, respectively, and two of them were experimentally fabricated and tested, which successfully verified the accuracy of the VGFE-DNN method.

Abstract

Background: Right hemicolectomy is the standard treatment for right-sided colon cancer. There is variation in the technical aspects of performing right hemicolectomy as well as in short-term outcomes. It is therefore necessary to explore best clinical practice following right hemicolectomy in expert centres. Methods: This snapshot study of right hemicolectomy for colon cancer in China was a prospective, multicentre cohort study in which 52 tertiary hospitals participated. Eligible patients with stage I–III right-sided colon cancer who underwent elective right hemicolectomy were consecutively enrolled in all centres over 10 months. The primary endpoint was the incidence of postoperative 30-day anastomotic leak. Results: Of the 1854 patients, 89.9 per cent underwent laparoscopic surgery and 52.3 per cent underwent D3 lymph node dissection. The overall 30-day morbidity and mortality were 11.7 and 0.2 per cent, respectively. The 30-day anastomotic leak rate was 1.4 per cent. In multivariate analysis, ASA grade > II (P < 0.001), intraoperative blood loss > 50 ml (P = 0.044) and D3 lymph node dissection (P = 0.008) were identified as independent risk factors for postoperative morbidity. Extracorporeal side-to-side anastomosis (P = 0.031), intraoperative blood loss > 50 ml (P = 0.004) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (P = 0.004) were identified as independent risk factors for anastomotic leak. Conclusion: In high-volume expert centres in China, laparoscopic resection with D3 lymph node dissection was performed in most patients with right-sided colon cancer, and overall postoperative morbidity and mortality was low. Further studies are needed to explore the optimal technique for right hemicolectomy in order to improve outcomes further. This snapshot study was a prospective, multicentre, cohort study to explore the clinical practise and outcome of right hemicolectomy in China. Abstract

A parallel dual‐cavity fiber‐optic Fabry‐Perot (F‐P) salinity sensor based on hollow core fiber and a ceramic ferrule is proposed. The sensor is comprised of a F‐P reference cavity and a F‐P sensing cavity in parallel. The reference cavity is a closed cavity that is fusion spliced with a segment of single‐mode optical fiber (SMF) and a small piece of silica tube (ST). The sensing cavity is an open liquid cavity that is connected by a ferrule after inserting two single‐mode fibers into a ceramic core, facilitating the replacement of salt water. Variations in the salinity of salt water will affect the change in refractive index of optical path, and then change the output spectral structure. By precisely controlling the length of two cavities, the free spectral range (FSR) of the sensing cavity is approximately equal to the FSR of the reference cavity, resulting in the generation of the Vernier effect, which improves the sensitivity of the sensor to salinity greatly. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the sensor sensitivity to salinity reaches −0.78 nm/‰ (−3809.68 nm/RIU) in the salinity range from 35‰ to 20‰ at room temperature of 25°C, which is 10.8 times higher than the sensitivity of a single sensing cavity. Abstract

Programmed cell death protein (PD-1) is an important immunosuppressive molecule, which can inhibit interaction between PD-1 and its ligand PD-L1, further enhancing the T cell response and anti-tumor activity, which is called immune checkpoint blockade. Immunotherapy, represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors, has opened up a new era of tumor treatment and is gradually being applied to colorectal cancer recently. Immunotherapy was reported could achieve a high objective response rate (ORR) for colorectal cancer with high microsatellite instability (MSI), thus opening up a new era of colorectal cancer immunotherapy. Along with the increasing use of PD1 drugs in colorectal cancer, we should pay more attention to the adverse effects of these immune drugs while seeing the hope. Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) caused by immune activation and immune homeostasis during anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy can affect multi-organ and even be fatal in serious cases. Therefore, understanding irAEs is essential for their early detection and appropriate management. In this article, we review the irAEs that occur during the treatment of colorectal cancer patients with PD-1/PD-L1 drugs, analyze the current controversies and challenges, and point out future directions that should be explored, including exploring efficacy predictive markers and optimizing the paradigm of individualized immunotherapy.

Abstract

Animal models are important for understanding the pathogenesis of human diseases and for developing and testing new drugs. Pigs have been widely used in the research on the cardiovascular, skin barrier, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems as well as organ transplantation. Recently, pigs also become an attractive large animal model for the study of neurodegenerative diseases because their brains are very similar to human brains in terms of mass, gully pattern, vascularization, and the proportions of the gray and white matters. Although adeno-associated virus type 9 (AAV9) has been widely used to deliver transgenes in the brain, its utilization in large animal models remains to be fully characterized. Here, we report that intravenous injection of AAV9-GFP can lead to widespread expression of transgene in various organs in the pig. Importantly, GFP was highly expressed in various brain regions, especially the striatum, cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, without detectable inflammatory responses. These results suggest that intravenous AAV9 administration can be used to establish large animal models of neurodegenerative diseases caused by gene mutations and to treat these animal models as well.

Abstract

Introduction: Right-sided colon cancer is a prevalent malignancy. The standard surgical treatment for this condition is laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, with ileocolic anastomosis being a crucial step in the procedure. Recently, intracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis has garnered attention for its minimally invasive benefits. However, there remains a paucity of rigorously designed, large-scale, international multicenter randomized controlled trials to definitively assess the safety and efficacy of intracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for right-sided colon cancer. Methods: This study is an international, multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label, non-inferiority trial designed to compare the safety and efficacy of intracorporeal versus extracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis in patients with right-sided colon cancer undergoing right hemicolectomy. The primary endpoint is the anastomotic leakage rate within 30 days post-surgery. The main secondary endpoint is the 3-year disease-free survival rate post-surgery. A comprehensive quality assurance protocol will be established before the trial begins, including CT review, pathological evaluation, and the standardization and assessment of surgical techniques. Discussion: This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis following right hemicolectomy in patients with right-sided colon cancer. The anticipated outcome is that intracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis will show an anastomotic leakage rate and a 3-year disease-free survival rate comparable to those of extracorporeal anastomosis, while offering the added benefit of faster postoperative recovery. 76. Concept Demonstration of a Smart Pressure Sensing Rollable Piano

Abstract

This work proposes a new type of portable piano based on a gridless flexible intelligent pressure-sensing system, deep neural networks (DNNs), and hardware circuits. First, a gridless flexible sensor with the same shape and size of a traditional piano key is fabricated using carbon black (CB)-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Second, with the help of DNN, the gridless flexible sensor replaces the traditional piano key to collect the pressing pressure and location information in real time. Finally, the collected information is used to drive a speaker to make the corresponding piano sound, mimicking the accurate response of a traditional piano key when pressed with the same location and magnitude. In terms of material innovation, a multilayer packaging scheme for the sensor is developed so that the resistance change rate of the sample after 21 days was less than 2%, and the average coefficient of variation (CV) was close to 1%, which greatly improves the long-term stability. In terms of mechanism innovation, the DNN accurately predicts the magnitude and location of pressure, with an average localization error of less than 3% and an average pressure prediction error of less than 1%, so that the sound of the target frequency can be precisely stimulated.

77. Ultrawideband Microwave Absorber Conformable on Nondevelopable Curved Surfaces Based on the Hauberk Structure

Abstract

In this article, we propose a low-profile and ultrawideband microwave absorber that is nondevelopable curved surface conformable, polarization insensitive, and wide-angle incidence insensitive. The absorptivity of the absorber is greater than 90% in 1.27–18.75 and 1.3–18.93 GHz for TE and TM mode vertical incidences, respectively. The relative absorption bandwidth is 174.6% and 174.3% both covering the entire S-, C-, X-, and Ku-bands. The absorber consists of a unique stainless-steel hauberk structure, a regular prismoid resistor sheet, and a three-layer square resistor sheet supported by polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam. Notably, the absorber’s thickness is only 0.093 times the highest operating wavelength at 1.27 GHz. In the 2–18-GHz band, the absorptivity is >80% for the TE mode within 60° incidence angle and >85% for the TM mode within an 80° incidence angle. When conformed to the surface of a standard metal sphere with a radius of 100 mm, the absorber demonstrated excellent nondevelopable curved surface conformability and achieved >5-dB radar cross section (RCS) reduction for both TE and TM mode incidence waves. This unique property makes the absorber ideal for applications with irregular and nondevelopable curved surfaces.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the optimal strategy and driving factors of the critical nodes of pesticide packaging waste recycling by constructing the recycling process of "village collection–town transport–county management." Counties, towns, and villages are the central nodes of collection, coordination, and communication in the recycling process. Their strategy selection and influencing factor analysis are related to the development of recycling. The county processing center, township transit center, and village recycling center were selected to construct a game model, and strategy and parameter assumptions were made to obtain the optimal strategy combination. The results showed that strict supervision, professional transportation and strict implementation are the best strategies for counties, towns and villages, respectively. Simulation analysis confirmed that factors such as cost, reward restricted the strategy selection of each subject. The higher the supervision, transport, and input costs, the lower the enthusiasm of counties, towns, and villages to participate in recycling, respectively. Reasonable control of reward could help each participant choose a stable strategy. The study provided the idea of a pilot before promotion for the government and emphasized the importance of controlling incentive policies and relative costs to improve the recycling process of pesticide packaging waste. From the view of information flow, a super-network equilibrium optimization model is proposed to compute the solution of the operation architecture which is made up of a perceptive level, a command level and a firepower level. Firstly, the optimized conditions of the perceptive level, command level and firepower level are analyzed respectively based on the demand of information relation, and then the information supply-and-demand equilibrium model of the operation architecture super-network is established. Secondly, a variational inequality transformation (VIT) model for equilibrium optimization of the operation architecture is given. Thirdly, the contraction projection algorithm for solving the operation architecture super-network equilibrium optimization model with fuzzy demands is designed. Finally, numerical examples are given to prove the validity and rationality of the proposed method, and the influence of fuzzy demands on the super-network equilibrium solution of operation architecture is discussed.

Abstract

P. Notoginseng Saponins (PNS), the main active component of herbal medicine Panax notoginseng, has been widely used to treat cerebrovascular diseases. It has been acknowledged that PNS exerted protection on nerve injuries induced by ischemic stroke, however, the long-term impacts of PNS on the restoration of neurological defects and neuroregeneration after stroke have not been thoroughly studied and the underlying molecular mechanism of stimulating neurogenesis is difficult to precisely clarify, much more in-depth researches are badly needed. In the present study, cerebral ischemia injury was induced by microsphere embolism (ME) in rats. After 14 days, PNS administration relieved cerebral ischemia injury as evidenced by alleviating neurological deficits and reducing hippocampal pathological damage. What’s more, PNS stimulated hippocampal neurogenesis by promoting cell proliferation, migration and differentiation activity and modulated synaptic plasticity. Increased number of BrdU/Nestin, BrdU/DCX and NeuroD1-positive cells and upregulated synapse-related GAP43, SYP, and PSD95 expression were observed in the hippocampus. We hypothesized that upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and activation of Akt/mTOR/p70S6K signaling after ME could partially underlie the neuroprotective effects of PNS against cerebral ischemia injury. Our findings offer some new viewpoints into the beneficial roles of PNS against ischemic stroke.

All participants received an intervention of biofeedback treatment. Any outcomes that can evaluate the patient’s bowel function were the primary research endpoint, while the quality of life was the second endpoint. The disagreements between the two reviewers were resolved after discussion and the third independent reviewer’s ruling. As a result, 12 of 185 studies met selection criteria and were included in the review.Data Extraction: We designed an electronic data extraction form and data were extracted independently. Abstract

Some new characterizations of the generalized Bott–Duffin inverse are proposed by using range, nullspace and matrix equations. We extend the famous fact that the rank equation characterizes the inverse of matrices to the generalized Bott–Duffin inverse, and give its several representations. Additionally, we show the relationships between the generalized Bott–Duffin inverse and two classes of nonsingular bordered matrices and apply them to the Cramer's rules of two classes of restricted linear equations.
