Abstract

ES: La movilidad internacional académica y la migración intraeuropea altamente cualificada sontendencias consolidadas. Vigorosamente estimuladas por las políticas de la UE, las oportunidadesson dinámicas y la circulación a través de diferentes puestos de trabajo y entre países es unacaracterística destacada de la comunidad académica. Sin embargo, debido a que la economíay el sistema científico son frágiles en Portugal, esas tendencias son sinónimos de la fuga de cerebros,particularmente en tiempos de crisis de la zona euro. Con el fin de cuestionar el lugar dela crisis económica en el proceso de tomar decisiones de la migración de los científicos, se analizancinco retratos sociológicos, considerando que la movilidad académica suele estar asociada conperspectivas de carrera individuales y es fomentada por las políticas europeas. Academic international mobility and intra-European highly skilled migration are consolidatedtrends. Strongly stimulated by EU policies, the opportunities are highly dynamic, andcirculation through different jobs and countries is a striking feature of the academic community.However, for a fragile economy and scientific system such as Portuguals these trendsare synonymous with brain drain, particularly in times of Eurozone crisis. To study the roleof the economic crisis in scientists decision-making process, in terms of their own migration,five individual portraits are analysed, taking into account that academic mobility is oftenassociated with individual career perspectives and encouraged by European policies.

Abstract

Time is one of the major concerns of our life (because decisions on how to allocate this resource are always the result of a compromise between natural and social norms. In particular, in Western societies there has been a transformation of social timing along fundamental lines; speeding, measurement, expansion and commodification . In the post-industrial phase, the meaning of time varies, in particular due to the disappearance of the traditional separation between working and non-working hours. There is a new "social rhythm” that risks a qualitative and quantitative depletion of temporal resources, generated by the recurring dynamic of a negative overlap between work and private life, and the overlapping of different layers of time.eople try to generate practices and strategies to reconnect to the fundamentals of social time such as time banks, which is a tool for mutualism and reciprocity within specific and territorially defined communities (residents of a neighbourhood or the human resources of a company). The system is configured as a proximity service that pools the scarce time resources of each person and redistributes them to support the needs of a member of the community. Through the time bank, the members of a community exchange services, the value of which is defined by the amount of time required, so that time acts as a type of currency. In this chapter, the objective is to see how motivations and exchange practices change in the transition of time banks from the off-line to the on-line system and what impact those changes have on reciprocal transaction mechanisms. The data collected refer to the transactions of one the most significant digital time-banking platforms currently operating.

Abstract

Background: Rotavirus as a causative agent of childhood diarrhea is known to cause serious illness among children less than 5 years of age. This study examined the epidemiology of rotavirus disease burden and diversity of G and P genotypes of rotavirus in Nepal. Methods: Stool samples were tested for rotavirus by Enzyme Immuno Assay and Group A rotaviruses were detected by using both ELISA and RT-PCR in 2718 samples between 2009 and 2011. Results: Rotavirus was more frequently detected among inpatients (28.5%) than outpatients (15.2%). Over the three-year study period, 653 (24.4%) cases were positive for rotavirus by ELISA. Genotyping by RT-PCR was done on 638 samples. The most prevalent genotype was G12P [6] (60.4%). Mixed infections were not uncommon (14% in 2009, 29% in 2010 an 7% in 2011). However, 41 were partially typed and 23 were completely untyped over the study period. Conclusions: This study highlights the rotavirus disease burden and diversity of rotavirus strains circulating in Nepal. Continued sentinel surveillance will provide useful information to policy makers with regard to rotavirus vaccine introduction.

Abstract

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. Methods: A total of 3181 HCV-mono-infected treatment-naive patients were assigned to 24 or 48 weeks of peginterferon alfa/ribavirin by their physician. Different molar concentrations (0.05–0.2 M) of vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles were synthesized with and without polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) using hydrothermal method. The growth mechanism with different molar concentrations as well as the effect of PVP on the structural, optical, and electrical properties have been investigated. The size of the particles was measured from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x‐ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). Optical properties were analyzed through photoluminescence and absorption measurement. The electrical transport properties were analyzed by impedance spectroscopy and Van der Pauw method. From impedance measurements, dominance of grain boundary resistance over grain resistance was observed. The resistivity also decreased with increasing molar concentrations of nanoparticles with and without PVP. The highest temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) value of −2.33 %/K with the lowest resistivity of 0.02 Ω. cm for V2O5 nanoparticle of 0.2 M concentration without using PVP was observed. In this paper we study the effect of polymer formation on HARC profile at various electrostatic chuck (ESC) temperatures and demonstrate a novel and advanced inline metrology - polymer dump thickness measurement - to automatically detect chamber deviation and significantly improve the yield.

Abstract

Background: Indole and pyrazoles are one of the prime structural units in the field of medicinal chemistry and have been reported to exhibit a variety of biological activities specifically anti-cancer. In view of their medicinal significance, we synthesized a conjugate of the two moieties to get access to newer and potential anti-cancer agents. Methods: Indolyl pyrazoles [3-(1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-2-(1-methyl-1H-indole-3-carbon yl)acrylonitriles] (4a-l) were synthesized by adopting simple and greener protocol and all the synthesized derivatives were docked against Bcl-2 protein and the selected chemical moieties were screened for their cytotoxicity by using the MTT assay. Results: All the synthesized compounds were docked against BCL-2 protein in order to understand their binding pattern. Among the 12 compounds docked, 4d, 4f, 4h, 4j, and 4l compounds exhibited better protein binding interactions and the same were screened for their anti-cancer activity against A549 (lung) cancer cell lines at a concentration of 100 μM using Doxorubicin as standard. Substitutions such as N-benzyl, N-ethyl groups and halogen groups such as Br, Cl on indole ring showed moderate activity against A-549 cell lines. Conclusion: Among the 5 indolyl pyrazole derivatives screened, compounds 4h and 4j showed significantly better activity with an IC50 of 33.12 and 34.24 μM, respectively. Further, structural tweaking of the synthesized new chemical entities may lead to potential hit/lead-like molecules.

Abstract

Transient photovoltage (TPV) decay measurements have commonly been used to estimate the charge carrier lifetimes in solar cell devices. However, it has recently been demonstrated that an intrinsic material property, such as the effective bulk carrier lifetime, can be severely masked by other device-related dynamics, such as the composite resistance-capacitance (RC) discharge times, particularly at lower illumination intensities. In this work, we systematically investigate these issues by examining the role that the device’s differential resistance plays on the TPV lifetimes as a function of the open circuit voltage. Using two different sets of perovskite solar cells, one of which was passivated through a special surface treatment chemistry, we clearly demonstrate that small differences in dark current density vs voltage (J–V) measurements are strongly correlated with TPV lifetime measurements in both devices. Using the two-diode recombination current model, we show that TPV lifetimes can be successfully predicted from a very fundamental yet often overlooked steady-state measurement technique.

Aristolochia tagala Cham. (syn: Aristolochia acuminata Lam.) (Aristolochiaceae), known as Nallayishwari in Telugu, has been of interest to researchers because of its traditional uses for treating rheumatic pains and fever.The anti-inflammatory activity of the petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of A. tagala roots were investigated for the first time.In vivo and in vitro anti-inflammatory effects were investigated employing the carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats and the macrophage cell line RAW264.7 stimulated with proinflammatory stimuli (lipopolysaccharide interferon γ or the calcium ionophore A23187) to determine PGE(2) or LTB(4) release, respectively.All the extracts exhibited anti-inflammatory effects which were found to be significant (p 0.001) at 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o, in rats tested and the ethyl acetate extract inhibited the induction of PGE(2) with IC(50) = 39.1 mg mL(-1) and LTB(4) with IC(50) = 29.5 mg mL(-1).These findings demonstrate that the A. tagala roots have excellent anti-inflammatory activity and validate the traditional indications of this plant in its origin country.

Abstract

Biliary leak is an uncommon but significant complication following cholecystectomy. Endotherapy is an established method of treatment. However, the optimal intervention is not known.Eighty-five patients with postcholecystectomy biliary leaks from July 2000 to March 2009 were retrospectively evaluated.The study population was 20 males and 65 females with a mean age of 42.47 years. Patients presented with abdominal pain (46), jaundice (23), fever (23), abdominal distension (42), or bilious abdominal drain (67). Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography detected a leak at the cystic duct stump in 45 patients, stricture with middle common bile duct leak in 4, leak from the right hepatic duct in 3, and a ligated common bile duct in 32. Twelve also had bile duct stones. One had a broken T-tube with stones. Endotherapy was possible in 53 patients. Three patients with stones, one with a broken T-tube with stones, and 4 with stricture of the common bile duct with a leak were managed with sphincterotomy and stenting. Eight patients with a cystic duct stump leak with stones were managed with sphincterotomy and stone extraction. Three outpatients and 12 inpatients with a cystic duct stump leak were managed with sphincterotomy and stent and sphincterotomy and nasobiliary drain, respectively. Five patients with a cystic duct stump leak were managed with stenting. Sixteen with coagulopathy were managed with only nasobiliary drain (9) or stent (7). Leak closure was achieved in 100% patients. Four developed mild pancreatitis which improved with conservative treatment.Endoscopic intervention is a safe and effective method of treatment of postcholecystectomy biliary leaks. However, management should be individualized based on factors such as outpatients or inpatients, presence of stone, stricture, ligature, or coagulopathy.

Abstract

High biliary calcium and trace elements (copper, zinc and iron) in patients with chronic cholelithiasis can be associated with gallstones.Estimations of calcium, copper, zinc and iron were done in the serum, gall bladder bile and gallstones of 48 patients with chronic cholelithiasis and in 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Biliary levels of calcium and trace elements and bile/serum ratio of calcium and trace elements were compared in the two groups.Serum calcium was significantly less (P = 0.009) than controls, but biliary calcium was higher in the patients with chronic cholecystitis. All trace elements were found to be significantly higher (P/= 0.036) in the bile of patients with chronic cholelithiasis. The bile/serum ratio of calcium, copper and zinc was significantly greater (P/= 0.03) in patients of chronic cholelithiasis. Gall bladder bile in patients with chronic cholelithiasis was slightly more alkaline. Pigment stones contained significantly more calcium, copper and iron than cholesterol stones (P/= 0.001).Higher biliary calcium and trace elements as well as a defective pH of gall bladder bile in patients with chronic cholelithiasis could be the underlying factor in the pathogenesis of gallstones.

Abstract

The effect of interparticle cohesion on powder mixing in a ribbon mixer was studied by means of the discrete element method. It is shown that with an increase in the cohesion, the mixing rate and uniformity of mixing deteriorate, the coordination number increases indicating the loss of the ability of particles to be engaged in free flowing motion, and a majority of particles have a stronger tangential velocity allowing bulk angular motion of particles. Conversely, with a decrease in the cohesion, more particles have larger axial velocities, which will increase convective motion in the axial direction. When the cohesion is reduced, the number of particles having large radial stresses increases, and normal stress in the axial direction remains mostly unchanged. Abstract

This study assessed the capacity of non-transgenic (NTG) and growth-hormone transgenic (TG; gene construct EO-1α) Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.), comprised of conventional diploid (DIP) and reproductively-sterile triploid (TRIP) fish, to utilize a diet containing relatively high amounts of plant protein (PP) concomitant with lower levels of fish meal (FM) protein. Triplicate groups of full-sibling NTG/DIP, NTG/TRIP, TG/DIP and TG/TRIP salmon (initial weight, 27–35 g) were held in freshwater and fed two experimental diets until they exceeded 400% growth. Two isonitrogenous (50% crude protein), isolipidic (21% lipid) and isoenergetic (22 MJ/kg gross energy) experimental diets were tested. The control diet (FM) contained 64 and 36%, while PP diet contained 32 and 68% of total dietary protein from FM and PP, respectively. TG and NTG fish achieved the target (> 150 g) weight in 89 and 206 days, respectively. TG fish exhibited significantly higher specific growth rates (SGR) (2.48 vs 0.7%/day) and thermal growth coefficient (TGC) (3.04 vs 0.79) than NTG, regardless of ploidy or diet. TG/TRIP fish had significantly lower growth rates than DIP due to lower feed intake, while no ploidy effect was observed within the NTG group. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly better in TG/DIP and TG/TRIP fish having achieved the same target weight with 20–25% less feed due to improved protein utilization and retention efficiency compared to NTG fish. NTG fish had higher digestibility of protein (93% vs 89%), lipid (95% vs 94%) and energy (89% vs 85%) relative to their TG siblings, and was similar between DIP and TRIP fish. Nutrients' digestibility was significantly lower in TG fish fed PP diet than those fed FM diet, regardless of ploidy. At the end of the study, TG fish had significantly lower whole-body protein (56% vs 59%) and higher lipid (36% vs 34%) and energy (2746 vs 2694 kJ/100 g) content than NTG fish. However, as a result of the rapid growth rate and efficient feed utilization, nutrient gain and retention efficiencies were significantly higher in TG than NTG fish. DIP and TRIP TG Atlantic salmon have the ability to maintain accelerated growth even when fed a high PP diet (68% of dietary protein), which may have important benefits for the production of growth hormone transgenic Atlantic salmon. Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary vitamin E on gilthead seabream ( Sparus aurata) growth and survival, at two different highly unsaturated fatty acids ( HUFAs) levels. Eighteen days old gilthead seabream larvae were fed four formulated experimental diets combining two different dietary levels of HUFAs (M: medium 2.5 + 1.5, DHA + EPA, H: high 5 + 2.5 DHA + EPA g per 100 g) with two different levels of vitamin E (M: medium 540 mg kg−1, H: high 2900 mg kg−1): MM, MH, HM, HH ( HUFA/vitamin E). After 2-week feeding trial, the average survival rate was 52.6% and there were no significant differences found among treatments. Increase in vitamin E up to high level markedly improved larval growth, particularly when dietary HUFA levels were lower, suggesting a higher protection value when these fatty acids are more limiting. At medium dietary HUFA levels, increase in vitamin E from medium to high level enhanced larval growth performance in terms of total length. Background/Aim: To compare the quality of life (QOL) in patients undergoing transhiatal esophagectomy(THE) with or without chemotherapy, who were admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and enrolled in the study, from July 2004 to October 2005. Patients and Methods:Thirty patients of esophageal carcinoma by purposive sampling were randomized into two groups i.e.,patients undergoing THE after chemotherapy and patients undergoing THE without chemotherapy. Two QOL questionnaires, one generic i.e., EORTC-QLQ C-30 (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) and other esophageal cancer-specific i.e., EORTC OES-18 were utilized to assess the QOL. Result:Physical functional scales were better in patients, who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The role and social aspects of functional scales deteriorated after completion of treatment in both groups. This was primarily due to the effect of surgery. However, they were better from an emotional and cognitive point of value after surgery and radiotherapy. Fourteen out of 30 patients experienced vomiting and diarrhea due to radiotherapy. Conclusion: THE in esophageal carcinoma improves global health scales and majority of symptom scales in all patients.
