Abstract

International audience; The strain dependence of the apparent activation energy of desorption of H 2 O on epitaxial, TiO 2-terminated, outof-plane polarized, BaTiO 3 (100) thin films has been investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption. The apparent activation energy of desorption increases significantly with the in-plane strain, suggesting that the strain-induced ferroelectric distortion determines the strength of the chemical bond between the dissociatively adsorbed water and the surface.

Abstract

Background: methodological challenges limit the use of brain atrophy and lesion burden measures in the followup of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients on clinical routine datasets. Objective: to determine the feasibility of T2-FLAIR-only measures of lateral ventricular volume (LVV) and salient central lesion volume (SCLV), as markers of disability progression (DP) in MS. Methods: a total of 3,228 MS patients from 9 MSBase centers in 5 countries were enrolled. Of those, 2,875 (218 with clinically isolated syndrome, 2,231 with relapsing-remitting and 426 with progressive disease subtype) fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were scanned on either 1.5 T or 3 T MRI scanners, and 5,750 brain scans were collected at index and on average after 42.3 months at post-index. Demographic and clinical data were collected from the MSBase registry. LVV and SCLV were measured on clinical routine T2-FLAIR images. Results: longitudinal LVV and SCLV analyses were successful in 96% of the scans. 57% of patients had scanner related changes over the follow-up. After correcting for age, sex, disease duration, disability, disease-modifying therapy and LVV at index, and follow-up time, MS patients with DP (n = 671) had significantly greater absolute LVV change compared to stable (n = 1,501) or disability improved (DI, n = 248) MS patients (2.0 mL vs. 1.4 mL vs. 1.1 mL, respectively, ANCOVA p < 0.001, post-hoc pair-wise DP vs. Stable p = 0.003; and DP vs. DI, p = 0.002). Similar ANCOVA model was also significant for SCLV (p = 0.03). Conclusions: LVV-based atrophy and SCLV-based lesion outcomes are feasible on clinically acquired T2-FLAIR scans in a multicenter fashion and are associated with DP over mid-term.

Abstract

Electrical impedance measurements in the laboratory on silicate melts are used to interpret magnetotelluric anomalies. On the basis of 2- and 4-electrode measurements, we show that the influence of the electrodes of the 2-electrode system on the measured resistivity can be of significant importance for low-resistivity melts and increases with temperature. At 1400[degrees]C, the resistivity of very conductive melts measured with two electrodes can reach six times the resistivity value measured with four electrodes. A short-circuit experiment is needed to correct the 2-electrode data. Electrodes contribution is also estimated for samples from other studies, for which the resistance of the electrical cell can be as high as the resistance of the sample. A correction of the resistivity data from the literature is proposed and values of the corresponding Arrhenian parameters are recommended. Abstract

Blood, hairs and sperm are tissues currently used in Forensic Science to carry out DNA fingerprints in the field of individual identification. Our study aims at showing that dental pulp can also be an exploitable DNA source.A quantitative and qualitative DNA investigation on a yield gel with sizing extracted from this tissue shows that the molecule appears to be in a great quantity and of a high molecular weight. The last characteristic allows the use of the restriction fragments lenght polymorphic technique to make DNA fingerprints, based on the individual variations of the restriction sites disposition, within the DNA molecule, for a given enzyme.Thus, for an enzyme, the lenght of the restriction fragments obtained and revealed by a probe, is visualized by autoradiograph.According to this technique, we compared the DNA fingerprints obtained on 8 persons with the probe MS43A, from both pulpar and nucleated blood cells.During the extraction of the third molar of each sample, a small quantity of blood was taken in the tooth socket. In the same time DNA was recovered.For a same person, the autoradiograph showed the same pattern for both blood and toogth sample.The DNA profile similitude confirms the possibility of using the tooth for genetic analysis. The interest in using dental tissues as a DNA source of individual identification falls within the particular character of resistance of this organ towards physical or chemical exterior agressions.The tooth which until now was used in Anthropology and Forensic Science for its morphological aspects could be used this way for genetic study., Les caractéristiques qualitatives et quantitatives de l’ADN extrait à partir des cellules pulpaires permettent de réaliser des empreintes génétiques par la méthode des polymorphismes de restriction. L’application de ces techniques de biologie moléculaire aux tissus dentaires ouvre des perspectives intéressantes dans les domaines de la médecine légale et de l’anthropologie du fait même de la pérénité de la dent.

87. OCD symptoms in succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) deficiency: a case report

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) deficiency is a rare neurometabolic disorder resulting in a heterogeneous clinical phenotype. Adolescent and adult patients with SSADH deficiency may present with OCD symptoms. There is minimal literature regarding the pathological basis of OCD symptoms and their management amongst SSADH deficiency patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old woman with SSADH deficiency experienced obsessional slowness and hesitancy in her activities of daily living, with motor rituals and stereotypies of her hands and face. Neuroimaging revealed T2 hyperintensities of the globi pallidi bilaterally. Commencement of the serotonergic escitalopram moderately improved her OCD symptoms. The addition of the dopaminergic pramipexole hydrochloride yielded further improvement, following unsuccessful trial of other adjuncts: risperidone, methylphenidate and mirtazapine. CONCLUSIONS: Pallidal pathology may explain the manifestation of OCD symptoms amongst individuals with SSADH deficiency. Serotonergic and concomitant dopaminergic therapy may be a viable treatment regimen for SSADH deficiency patients presenting with OCD symptoms.

Abstract

[sup.A][Na.sup.B][(NaMg).sup.C][Mg.sub.5][Si.sub.8][O.sub.22] [(OH,D).sub.2] amphibole was hydrothermally synthesized at 850 [degrees] C and 0.3 GPa. SEM, EPMA, and X-ray powder-diffraction data showed the experimental product to consist of a high amphibole yield (90-95%), plus minor quartz and rare enstatite. Neutron powder-diffraction data were collected using a time-of-flight diffractometer at room T and at 8 K, respectively, and structure refinement was carried out using the Rietveld method. The space group of the amphibole is P[2.sub.1]/m at both temperatures, as confirmed by the presence of b-type reflections (h + k = 2n + 1). FTIR OH- and OD-stretching spectra at both room and low T (30 K) show two main absorptions, which are assigned to two non-equivalent OH groups in the structure, and a third lower-frequency band, assigned to A-site vacant environments (local cummingtonite environments). At room- and low-T, the cell parameters are (in A): a 9.7188(1) and 9.7016(2), b 17.9385(3) and 17.8953(4), c 5.2692(1) and 5.2574(1); [beta] ([degree]) is 102.526(1) and 102.597(2). Cell volumes ([A.sup.3]) are 896.78(2) at room T and 890.80(2) at 8 K, with a relative reduction of less than 1%. Accurate structural positions for the hydrogen atoms were obtained from diffraction data. The O5A-O6A-O5A and O5B-O6B-O5B angles, diagnostic of the A- and B-chains kinking along c, are 190.0[degrees] and 159.2[degrees] at 293 K and 193.8[degrees] and 156.8[degrees] at 8 K, respectively. The orientation of the thermoelastic strain ellipsoid was calculated and the principal unit-strain tensor components are reported. A comparison between the low-temperature data reported here and the high-temperature data for a similar amphibole composition, reported by Camara et al. (2003) up to 643 K, is discussed.
