We report here methods and techniques for creating and improving a model that reproduces the scintillation and ionization response of a dual-phase liquid and gaseous xenon time-projection chamber. Starting with the recent release of the Noble Element Simulation Technique (NEST v2.0), electronic recoil data from the $\beta$ decays of ${}^3$H and ${}^{14}$C in the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) detector were used to tune the model, in addition to external data sets that allow for extrapolation beyond the LUX data-taking conditions. This paper also presents techniques used for modeling complicated temporal and spatial detector pathologies that can adversely affect data using a simplified model framework. The methods outlined in this report show an example of the robust applications possible with NEST v2.0, while also providing the final electronic recoil model and detector parameters that will used in the new analysis package, the LUX Legacy Analysis Monte Carlo Application (LLAMA), for accurate reproduction of the LUX data. As accurate background reproduction is crucial for the success of rare-event searches, such as dark matter direct detection experiments, the techniques outlined here can be used in other single-phase and dual-phase xenon detectors to assist with accurate ER background reproduction.

Introduction A million people every day worldwide contract a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). In Brazil, studies show that rural living presents adverse conditions and promotes life behaviours that favour the acquisition of such diseases. The objective of this investigation was to estimate the prevalence of symptomatic STIs and to analyse the risk behaviours for these infections among rural settlers from the southwest of Goias, Central Brazil. Methods This is an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. From May to June 2011, 395 individuals aged 12 years or older living in settlements in southwestern Goias, Central Brazil, were recruited. All participants were interviewed by means of a structured questionnaire, containing questions about sociodemographic data and risk behaviours for STIs. The outcome variable was the clinical presentation of one of the following STI symptoms over the previous 12 months: vaginal discharge, urethral discharge, genital ulcers, pelvic inflammatory disease, and anogenital warts. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Goias. Results Of the total, 51.6% were male, 39.5% were aged between 12 and 40 years, and 42.5% had 4 or fewer years of study. The majority were married (68.4%), from Goias (79%), and were Catholic (51.9%). The prevalence for symptomatic STIs among the settlers was 20.5%. It was observed that being male (adjusted OR: 0.17, p=0.00), drinking alcohol (adjusted OR: 1.75, p=0.05), and life history in rural encampment. (adjusted OR: 2.78, p=0.00) were variables associated with STIs. Conclusion The results support the need for effective strategies for prevention and control of STIs among the rural population, especially settlers, a population with significant potential in the chain of transmission of sexual infections. Health education and rapid testing for STIs should be implemented for individuals of rural encampment in Brazil.

Objectives: Indigenous Latin American populations have used extracts from Calophyllum brasiliense, a native hardwood, to treat gastrointestinal symptoms for generations. The hexane extract of Calophyllum brasiliense stem bark (HECb) protects against ethanol-mediated gastric ulceration in Swiss–Webster mice. We investigated whether HECb inhibits the development of gastric epithelial pathology following Helicobacter felis infection of INS-Gas mice. Materials and Methods: Groups of five male, 6-week-old INS-Gas mice were colonized with H. felis by gavage. From 2 weeks after colonization their drinking water was supplemented with 2% Tween20 (vehicle), low dose HECb (33 mg/L, lHECb) or high dose HECb (133 mg/L, hHECb). Equivalent uninfected groups were studied. Animals were culled 6 weeks after H. felis colonization. Preneoplastic pathology was quantified using established histological criteria. Gastric epithelial cell turnover was quantified by immunohistochemistry for Ki67 and active-caspase 3. Cytokines were quantified using an electrochemiluminescence assay. Results: Vehicle-treated H. felis infected mice exhibited higher gastric atrophy scores than similarly treated uninfected mice (mean atrophy score 5.6 ± 0.87 SEM vs. 2.2 ± 0.58, p < 0.01). The same pattern was observed following lHECb. Following hHECb treatment, H. felis status did not significantly alter atrophy scores. Gastric epithelial apoptosis was not altered by H. felis or HECb administration. Amongst vehicle-treated mice, gastric epithelial cell proliferation was increased 2.8-fold in infected compared to uninfected animals (p < 0.01). Administration of either lHECb or hHECb reduced proliferation in infected mice to levels similar to uninfected mice. A Th17 polarized response to H. felis infection was observed in all infected groups. hHECb attenuated IFN-γ, IL-6, and TNF production following H. felis infection [70% (p < 0.01), 67% (p < 0.01), and 41% (p < 0.05) reduction vs. vehicle, respectively]. Conclusion: HECb modulates gastric epithelial pathology following H. felis infection of INS-Gas mice. Further studies are indicated to confirm the mechanisms underlying these observations.

none 6 no Background: Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is still an undefined syndrome with several unsettled issues despite the increasing awareness of its existence. We carried out a prospective survey on NCGS in Italian centers for the diagnosis of gluten-related disorders, with the aim of defining the clinical picture of this new syndrome and to establish roughly its prevalence compared with celiac disease. Methods: From November 2012 to October 2013, 38 Italian centers (27 adult gastroenterology, 5 internal medicine, 4 pediatrics, and 2 allergy) participated in this prospective survey. A questionnaire was used in order to allow uniform and accurate collection of clinical, biochemical, and instrumental data. Results: In total, 486 patients with suspected NCGS were identified in this 1-year period. The female/male ratio was 5.4 to 1, and the mean age was 38 years (range 3–81). The clinical picture was characterized by combined gastrointestinal (abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, nausea, epigastric pain, gastroesophageal reflux, aphthous stomatitis) and systemic manifestations (tiredness, headache, fibromyalgia-like joint/muscle pain, leg or arm numbness, 'foggy mind,' dermatitis or skin rash, depression, anxiety, and anemia). In the large majority of patients, the time lapse between gluten ingestion and the appearance of symptoms varied from a few hours to 1 day. The most frequent associated disorders were irritable bowel syndrome (47%), food intolerance (35%) and IgE-mediated allergy (22%). An associated autoimmune disease was detected in 14% of cases. Regarding family history, 18% of our patients had a relative with celiac disease, but no correlation was found between NCGS and positivity for HLA-DQ2/-DQ8. IgG anti-gliadin antibodies were detected in 25% of the patients tested. Only a proportion of patients underwent duodenal biopsy; for those that did, the biopsies showed normal intestinal mucosa (69%) or mild increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes (31%). The ratio between suspected NCGS and new CD diagnoses, assessed in 28 of the participating centers, was 1.15 to 1. Conclusions: This prospective survey shows that NCGS has a strong correlation with female gender and adult age. Notre travail avait pour objectif d'étudier les aspects épidémiologiques et écho-cardiographiques des cardiopathies congénitales au CHUP-CDG afind'y faire l'état des lieux. Pour se faire, nous avons mené sur une période de 27 mois d'aout 2009 à mai 2010 et d'octobre 2011 à décembre 2011,une étude rétrospective des comptes rendus d'échocardiographies Doppler des patients admis dans le service d'imagerie médicale. Nous avons utilisé une sonde cardiaque de 5MHz sur appareil Aloka Prosound 4000 Plus. Durant la période d'étude, 380 examens écho-cardiographiques ont été réalisés et ont permis de mettre en évidence 109 cas de cardiopathies congénitales avec 138 entités nosologiques différentes. Les cardiopathies congénitales représentaient 0,98 % des 11169 entrées. Les souffles étaient au premier rang des motifs de demande de l'échographie Doppler cardiaque (121 cas sur 380) soit 39,53%. Les CIV étaient au premier plan des cardiopathies congénitales (28,26%), suivies des CIA (23,19%), des sténoses pulmonaires (19,57%), des Tétralogie de Fallot (9,42%). Dans leur forme isolée, les CIA étaient les plus fréquentes avec 21,95% des cas, suivies des CIV avec 20,73%. Sur 138 cas de cardiopathies congénitales (chez 109 enfants), 53 cas ont été observés chez des enfants de sexe féminin et 56 cas chez des enfants de sexe masculin soit un sexe ration de 1,1. La tranche d'âge présentant une fréquence élevée de cardiopathie congénitale est celle de 1mois- 30 mois avec 55% des cas. Les cardiopathies congénitales de l'enfant sont une réalité en Afrique, leurs fréquences dans toutes les séries rapportées sont certainement sous estimées en raison de l'inaccessibilité de l'échocardiographie doppler.

En esta conceptualización se incluyen sus rasgos más importantes y se describen diferentes modalidades (intrínsecos, instrumentales y colectivos). En segundo lugar, se introduce la estructura conceptual del caso, es decir, la construcción de "issues" o cuestiones problemáticas, que son objeto de estudio. Por último, se reflexiona acerca de la dimensión ética en los estudios de caso y se describen los criterios éticos fundamentales para la investigación interpretativa. First, it brings together the most relevant authors and sources in the field to arrive at a definition of the concept "case study". This conceptualization discusses the more important characteristics of a case study, and describes different possible modalities (intrinsic, instrumental and collective). Second, it presents the conceptual structure of a case, in other words, the way in which one detects key issues and defines the object of study. Finally, the document reflects on the ethical dimension of case studies and describes fundamental ethical criteria for an interpretative investigation.

The paper also presents two models of copyleft licenses: Creative Commons and the "University Licences" (Harvard). By drawing on different declarations (Budapest, Bethesda and Berlin), it defines the principles and international agreements regarding open access material in the scientific community for the last decade. Finally, the paper will define a concept of "Open Education", and describe the role of Institutional Repositories in the storage and dissemination of academic and scientific knowledge.

Además tomamos partido y abogamos por un desarrollo del currículo que tenga en cuenta el contexto educativo-musical, basado en datos provenientes de la investigación educativa, y que preste atención fundamentalmente al plano artístico y estético. This inquiry argues for a curriculum development that takes the educational-musical context into account, drawing on data from educational research, and which pays attention to artistic and aesthetic elements. We advocate for a critical curriculum, introducing a shift away from the traditional focus in musical content towards an interest in how music contributes to the educational objectives of the school system.

La diversidad caracteriza el conjunto de los textos, y a veces la contraposición de posiciones ideológicas y conceptuales, lo cual sirve para enriquecer el debate y la reflexión.Los textos se distribuyen en cuatro capítulos: El primero, sobre el sujeto, o relaciones entre sujetos en la investigación. El segundo entorno a cómo las narrativas y las historias de vida pueden convertirse en herramientas para el cambio. El tercero se centra en la entrevista como el espacio de encuentro y de diálogo que tiene lugar en el proceso de investigación. This collection of work is characterized by its diversity, and sometimes by contradictions in its different ideological and conceptual positions, which allows this report to enrich debate and provoke critical reflection. The texts are divided into four chapters. The first explores the subject, or the relationships between subjects in an investigation. The second addresses how narrative and life histories can become tools for change. The third looks at the interview as a space of encounter and dialogue and its place in the research process. Los objetivos de este foro de debate se focalizan en conocer la diversidad que existe entre los diferentes grupos de investigación, compartiendo los enfoques metodológicos utilizados, los autores y modelos de referencia y las claves para utilizar un determinado posicionamiento y si es posible llegar a consensuar posicionamientos en la Red., [cat] El document que presentem intenta recollir les principals aportacions dels grups d'investigació integrants de la xarxa REUNI+D, entorn del posicionament metodològic davant els projectes de investigació educativa que duen a terme aquests grups. This content was developed in a debate that took place in a virtual forum open to all network members. The main aim of this debate was to make explicit the diversity that existed within the different research groups, sharing the different methodological frameworks used, as well as the different authors, main references and key points behind each position. If possible, the debate tried to find common ground among groups in order to arrive at a consensus about the methodological position.

We have shown experimental results of the excitation of long period fiber gratings by means of flexural acoustic waves with a wavelength larger than the grating period, validated by numerical simulations. The effect of the acoustic wave on the grating is modeled with the method of assumed modes, which delivers the strain field inside the grating, then used as the input to the transfer matrix method, needed for calculating the grating spectrum. The experimental and numerical results are found to be in good agreement, even though only the strain-optic effects are taken into account. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Films of SeTeIn Chalcogenide glasses are prepared by melt quenching followed by flash evaporation. Their optical constants and variations in refractive index, extinction and absorption coefficients with energy of incident radiation are evaluated and discussed.
