Abstract

Although the role of echocardiography in the detection of left atrial masses is well established, reliability of the method is yet unknown. In 312 patients who underwent cardiac surgery, echocardiographic and anatomic findings were confronted. Pre-operative diagnosis was confirmed in the 8 cases with prolapsing tumors: in the remaining patients we had 5 false positive and 9 false negative diagnosis. So in our experience, sensibility has 73.5 and specificity 98.20.

Abstract

A total of 286 patients with mitral stenosis or predominant mitral stenosis underwent open heart mitral commissurotomy at the San Camillo Hospital between May 1969 and May 1975; mitral annuloplasty was performed on 71 patients, subvalvular apparatus correction on 43. The operative mortality rate was 0,7% (no deaths among the last 220 patients). Early results, evaluated from intraoperative data, clinical course, acoustic and polygraphic postoperative findings, were good in 228 patients (80%), fairly good in 41 (14%), bad in 17 (6%).

Abstract

The response times and operating voltages for light shutters made from polymer dispersed liquid crystals' are studied. Alterations in the resistivity of the polymer binder are made by varying the degree of cross-linking to demonstrate and quantitize the strong effect of resistivity on the switching voltage. The voltage response from transitions in the nematic director configuration is studied in radially configured droplets and the molecular anchoring energy at the droplet wall is measured. Measurements of the relaxation time, response time, and voltage response are also reported on uniformly elongated and aligned droplets to study the effect of droplet shape. The results of these measurements are compared with calculations based on simplified models for ellipsoidal shaped droplets with major and minor axes a and b respectively. Response equations in terms of the aspect ratio e = a/b are experimentally examined.

Abstract

The Authors present four cases of embolism of the superior mesenteric artery treated surgically, with satisfactory results, through embolectomy with Fogarty's catheter. The Authors affirm the necessity of always following this type of intervention, given its simplicity and the high rate of mortality of non treated embolism. Some anatomical and physio-pathological considerations are remembered and diagnostic and surgical promptness are recommended.

Abstract

Echocardiograms were performed in five patients with severe mitral porcine valve insufficiency due to the para-valvular leak in three cases and to a torn and flail cusp in two cases. We believe that diastolic fluttering of the vusps, decrease or increase of diastolic slope of either the stent or the anterior leaflet as well as decrease of the amplitude of motion of the leaflets cannot be regarded as typical diagnostic features as previously described. In our experience specific signs are only represented by a chaotic diastolic movement of one or both leaflets.

Abstract

Reopening of ventricular septal defect after surgical repair was investigated -- from six months to five years after operation -- on 75 patients who had undergone closure of ventricular septal defect and on 65 patients who had undergone complete correction of tetralogy of Fallot. The complication appeared in 3 patients (4%) of the first group and in 4 (6%) of the second group, always early after the operation (from 24 hours to 2 months). All patients underwent reoperation - operative mortality rate was 66% in the first group and 25% in the second one. Operative mortality was higher in patients with cardiac and/or tricuspidal failure, also after prolonged preoperative medical treatment.

Abstract

A 32 years old male presented with symptoms and signs of congestive heart failure. The echocardiographic and angiographic examinations demonstrated a large right atrial tumor prolapsing in the right ventricle through the tricuspid orifice. The patient underwent successful surgical resection of the tumor. Histologically in the lesion was diagnosed as angiosarcoma.

Abstract

Of the 255 patients under observation of the AA. with ostium secundum interatrial defect who underwent surgery, 23 (9%) presented an associated mitral regurgitation. All patients had a hemodynamic test and a complete contrahistography, 8 patients polygraphic and 5 patients echocardiographic examinations. The clinical data alone, ecgraphic and Rx, supplied sufficient indications for a correct diagnosis in 87% of the cases. 22 patients underwent surgery: the septal defect was corrected in all patients, mitral regurgitation only in 9; in 5 by valve substitution, in 4 through conservative techniques. Only one patient died of cerebral coma. A report is made on the data relative to the clinical history, Rx, ecgraphic and hemodynamic examinations of the 23 patients under observation, the various anatomosurgical aspects of the valvular alterations, and the criteria adopted for the surgical correction of the mitral regurgitation.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:\ud We estimated the cost consequence of Italian National Health System (NHS) investment in direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy according to hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment access policies in Italy.\ud \ud METHODS:\ud A multistate, 20-year time horizon Markov model of HCV liver disease progression was developed. Fibrosis stage, age and genotype distributions were derived from the Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies (PITER) cohort. The treatment efficacy, disease progression probabilities and direct costs in each health state were obtained from the literature. The break-even point in time (BPT) was defined as the period of time required for the cumulative costs saved to recover the Italian NHS investment in DAA treatment. Three different PITER enrolment periods, which covered the full DAA access evolution in Italy, were considered.\ud \ud RESULTS:\ud The disease stages of 2657 patients who consecutively underwent DAA therapy from January 2015 to December 2017 at 30 PITER clinical centres were standardized for 1000 patients. The investment in DAAs was considered to equal €25 million, €15 million, and €9 million in 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively. For patients treated in 2015, the BPT was not achieved, because of the disease severity of the treated patients and high DAA prices. For 2016 and 2017, the estimated BPTs were 6.6 and 6.2 years, respectively. The total cost savings after 20 years were €50.13 and €55.50 million for 1000 patients treated in 2016 and 2017, respectively.\ud \ud CONCLUSIONS:\ud This study may be a useful tool for public decision makers to understand how HCV clinical and epidemiological profiles influence the economic burden of HCV.

Abstract

Numerous experimental evidence show that exposure of biological systems to extremely high frequency microwaves may induce significant effects even at low powers. These effects are thought to occur via nonthermal mechanisms involving primarily the interaction of microwaves with phospholipid membrane structures. However, no conclusive experimental evidence that biomembranes exhibit remarkable sensitivity to this radiation has been provided up to now. Here, deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to study the effects of microwaves on 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine/ 2 H 2 O multilamellar vesicles that serve as biomimetic membranes. Here we show that, if the membrane is brought into close proximity to the transition point, microwaves induce a reduction of water ordering at the membrane interface, an upward shift of the main phase transition temperature and a broadening of the transition region. A deep dosimetric analysis shows that the above effects are nonthermal, indicating the need for a nonthermal hypothesis to explain them. This study suggests that exposure to high-frequency microwaves can have far reaching consequences on active biological systems.

Abstract

A novel and efficient method for the extraction of cellulose fibers from Spanish broom (Spartium junceum L.) is presented. The method is based on the sequential combination between an initial chemical stage (alkaline digestion) and a subsequent physical-chemical stage, consisting of compression with hot air in an autoclave followed by rapid decompression (DiCoDe process, digestion-compression-decompression). The alkaline mother liquor deriving from the initial digestion step can be conveniently recycled after centrifugation followed by ultrafiltration. The process is characterized by the production of fibers with excellent physical-chemical properties, such as high mechanical resistance and high elasticity, and rapid production times. The fibers obtained after the DiCoDe process can be further softened and whitened by means of enzymatic digestion. Fibers were morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while their composition and physical-chemical properties were determined by conventional methods, including colorimetry, TAPPI protocols, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry.

Abstract

One of the problems in the field of cultural heritage is the degradation of artworks and especially paintings. They appear very sensitive to environmental conditions. In this work, Spanish broom canvas is proposed as a novel painting support. In order to assess the deterioration properties of this new type of canvas, three degradation processes (exposure to wet atmosphere, to acidic attack and to UV light) were simulated and investigated. The deterioration state of the samples was monitored with Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The structure of the canvas was also analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). These techniques were successfully applied to study the occurrence significant changes of samples. The exposure to acidic and UV attack produced deep changes on the samples (only on the canvas surface in the case of UV light), while no significant effect was identified on the sample after the exposure to wet atmosphere. The results obtained from Spanish broom canvas are reported in comparison to flax canvas.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the chemical composition of Spartium junceum L. (also known as Spanish Broom) aromatic water and to evaluate its cytotoxic activity against a series of human cancer cell lines (melanoma: RPMI 7932; leukemia: K562; breast cancer cell: MCF7-Bart and MCF7-ICLC, colon adenocarcinoma: SW480). The results show that the aromatic water was cytotoxic toward the tumor cell lines analyzed (RPMI 7932, K562, MCF7-Bart, MCF7-ICLC, SW480), while it did not appreciably alter the viability of normal keratinocytes (NCTC 2544) suggesting its potential use as an antitumor agent for cancer treatment and/or prevention.

Abstract

Linalool, a small monoterpene molecule, is used widely for its flavoring and fragrant properties in many cosmetic products. In this work, we investigated the antiproliferative effect of two different linalool solutions on RPMI 7932 human melanoma and NCTC 2544 normal keratinocites cell lines using the trypan blue method. Morphological changes in cells were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, apoptosis was evaluated using caspase 3-antibody. Linalool showed a selective inhibitory effect on the growth of melanoma cells in a concentration-dependent manner, inducing several morphological changes, as revealed by SEM and TEM analysis. Moreover, the labelling for caspase-3 is abundant in the melanoma cells and almost absent in the normal keratinocites cells. The results suggest that linalool could be used as drug and/or as model drug for developing potential therapeutic agents for melanoma.

Abstract

Flax has been usually used to produce natural cellulose fibres with properties suitable for composite, textile, and other high-value fibrous applications. Spanish Broom, extracted by a physical-chemical process, is a source of cellulose fibres that can be used, as well as flax, in various fields (textile, paper, composites etc.). The aim of this study was to describe the chemical composition, morphology and tensile properties of Spanish Broom fibres in comparison with flax. The morphology of both fibres was established by optical microscopy (OM). The chemical composition and tensile properties of Spanish Broom fibres were determined according to conventional methods. The results show that Spanish Broom fibres have a higher cellulose content (91.7%) and better tensile properties than flax fibres. Moreover, Spanish Broom fibres have a smaller diameter (7-10 μm) than flax (17-24 μm), as observed by OM, and the cross-sections show an irregular polygonal shape with well defined lumen. Spanish Broom fibres were found to have very good tensile properties as well as thermal stability and could successfully replace flax in many applications.

Abstract

Information regarding the physiological and molecular plant responses to the treatment with new biofertilizers is limited. In this study, a fast-composting soil amendment obtained from solid waste by means of a Fenton reaction was assessed to evaluate the effects on the growth of Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia seedlings. Growth rate, root biomass, chlorophyll concentration, and total soluble proteins of seedlings treated with the 2% fast-composting soil amendment showed significant increases in comparison with the control seedlings. Proteomic analysis revealed that the soil amendment induced the up-regulation of proteins belonging to photosynthesis machinery, carbohydrate metabolism, and promoted energy metabolism. Root proteomics indicated that the fast-composting soil amendment strongly induced the organs morphogenesis and development; root cap development, lateral root formation, and post-embryonic root morphogenesis were the main biological processes enriched by the treatment. Overall, our data suggest that the addition of the fast-composting soil amendment formulation to the base soils might ameliorate plant growth by inducing carbohydrate primary metabolism and the differentiation of a robust root system.
