Influence of oral dosing with vitamin E on parameters of defence against infection in pigs at the early fattening stage Alpha-tocopherol-acetate was supplemented to the food of pigs during first fattening-period in doses of zero, 150 and 300 mg/kg of food. Parameters of resistance to infection were tested in 180 pigs under test on five different times during 10 weeks. Pigs fed on a diet supplemented with 150 mg Vit. E showed higher activity of lysozym and a higher rate of lysis of sacc. cer. as both other groups. Differential blood count done in 30 pigs showed relative and absolute higher concentration of granulocytes in blood of pigs fed on 150 mg Vit. E, whereas the serum-IgG-level was significantly decreased by this 150 mg-dose. The hypothesis of a non-linear stimulation of unspecific defense-mechanisms and the retardation of the age-dependent physiological decrease of granulocytes by the 150 mg-supplementation of Vit. E is discussed. Zusammenfassung Die Wirksamkeit von alpha-Tocopherol-Azetat-Supplementierungen in Dosierungen von 0, 150 und 300 mg pro kg Alleinfutter auf verschiedene Parameter der Infektionsabwehr wurde in einem Blindversuch an insgesamt 180 Schweinen während der Anfangsmast unter praxisüblichen Keimbelastungen geprüft. Die Abwehrparameter wurden zu fünf unterschiedlichen Zeitpunkten bestimmt. Die 150-mg-Dosierung des Vitamin E bewirkte eine höhere Lysozymaktivität und eine höhere Hefezytolyserate als die beiden Vergleichsdosierungen. Das bei 30 Tieren untersuchte Differential-blutbild zeigte eine relativ und absolut höhere Granulozytenkonzentration im Blut der 150-mg-Gruppe. Dagegen wird der IgG-Gehalt des Serums durch die 150-mg-Dosierung signifikant vermindert. Die Hypothese einer nicht-linearen Stimulation unspezifischer Abwehrsysteme und die Abpufferung eines entwicklungsphysiologisch bedingten Rückganges der Granulozyten durch die 150-mg-Dosis des Vitamin E werden diskutiert. Purpose: The purpose was to investigate changes in stress and recovery during preparation for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games., Methods: Eleven elite rowers of the German National Rowing Team completed four times the Recovery-Stress-Questionnaire for Athletes (RESTQ-Sport). The eight rowers who competed at the Olympic Games filled out the RESTQ-Sport a fifth time, 2 d before the preliminaries., Results: Trend parameters revealed significant alterations of somatic components of stress (Lack of Engery, Somatic Complaints, Fitness/Injury) and recovery factors (Fitness/Being in Shape) over time that mirrored the average length of daily extensive endurance training sessions. Significant changes in the scales Conflicts/Pressure and Social Relaxation reflected interpersonal processes within the team., Conclusions: The importance of balancing training stress and recovery for an optimal performance development is highlighted as well as the potential of the RESTQ-Sport for training monitoring.

Literature reorts varying mortality between 5 and 30%., Conclusions: The obstetrician has to be attentive whenever these symptoms appear for the course and prognosis decisively depend on a quick diagnosis by means of computertomography and angiography., Discussion: Blood coagulation disorders such as lack of Antithrombin III, protein C, or protein S, have been identified as a particularly important origin of the cerebral sinus-venous thrombosis. It is subject to discussion whether the patient should be advised against any further pregnancy. From a medical point of view, a subsequent pregnancy seems acceptable because the risk of another thrombosis, which is a rare event anyway, can be significantly reduced by providing anticoagulation substances.

In a balance trial with 10 pigs (mean body mass 50 kg) the influence of a bacterial protein supplement (Alcaligenes eutrophus) on N-metabolism was investigated. The bacteria were included into the diet at levels of 7 and 14% at the expense of extracted soyabean meal. Thus bacterial "pure protein" (bacterial non-nucleic acid N X X 6.25) amounted to 30 and 60% of the protein of the ration. Consuming 2 kg of feed dry matter per day the animals of the control group (I) and the experimental groups (II and III) ingested 48 g, 52 g and 55 g of total N respectively. The difference in N-intake is explained by the additional nucleic acid-N, amounting to 19,8% of total bacterial N. Daily weight gain (on average 1054 g) and feed conversion efficiency (feed ingested/weight gain; on average 1,9) were relatively improved at the highest dietary level of bacterial cell mass. Faecal N-excretion was increased significantly, whereas renal N-excretion remained unchanged. Mean apparent N-digestibility was 87,4% showing no significant difference between the experimental groups. N-balance values were noticibly increased following the intake of the bacterial protein supplement. The excretion of urinary urea-N was slightly reduced whereas 4-6 times as much allantoin-N was excreted when bacteria were fed. It is calculated that about 80% of the bacterial purines are renally excreted as allantoin and uric acid.
