Planktonic diatoms of the genus
Planktoniella are characterized by organic extensions from the girdle.Planktoniella species are solitary, except for a colonial form that was first described asCoenobiodiscus muriformis from San Diego Bay, California. We established a culture ofPlanktoniella muriformis from Mazatlán, Gulf of California, in order to solve its phylogenetic affinities using molecular markers. Beyond the distinct colony morphology,P. muriformis has one marginal rimoportula and absence of mantle ribs, while two rimoportulae and numerous mantle ribs are the signature characteristics in the solitary species of the genusPlanktoniella . In the SSU-, LSU rRNA and RuBisCO large subunit (rbc L) gene phylogenies,P. muriformis is nested within sequences from the paraphyletic genusThalassiosira . The sequences are distantly related to the clade of the type species ofPlanktoniella, P. sol , and four other congeneric species, and the type species ofThalassiosira or any other thalassiosiroid genera, supporting consideration as an independent genus. In therbc L gene phylogeny, the sequence ofP. muriformis allies with distinct thalassiosiroid genera without bootstrap support, while in the SSU and LSU rRNA gene phylogenies it is nested with support as a sister group of two strains ofT. hispida or the strain BEN02-35 identified asThalassiosira angulata , respectively. The considerable genetic distance between these taxa andP. muriformis , and the lack of distinctive common morphological features do not support their placement in the same genus. Based on analyses of nuclear and chloroplast molecular markers, and the distinctive morphology ofP. muriformis , with a unique type of colony formation unknown in any other diatom, we reinstate the genusCoenobiodiscus forP. muriformis . We propose a class of Two Higgs Doublet Models where there are Flavour Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) at tree level, but under control due to the introduction of a discrete symmetry in the full Lagrangian. It is shown that in this class of models, one can have simultaneously FCNC in the up and down sectors, in contrast to the situation encountered in BGL models. The intensity of FCNC is analysed and it is shown that in this class of models one can respect all the strong constraints from experiment without unnatural fine-tuning. It is pointed out that the additional sources of flavour and CP violation are such that they can enhance significantly the generation of the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe, with respect to the Standard Model., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures

In this paper we study static solutions with more general symmetries than the spherical symmetry of the five-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity. In this context, we study the coupling of the extra bosonic field $% h^{a}$ with ordinary matter which is quantified by the introduction of an energy-momentum tensor field associated with $h^{a}$. It is found that exist (i) a negative tangential pressure zone around low-mass distributions ($\mu <\mu_{1}$) when the coupling constant $\alpha $ is greater than zero; (ii) a maximum in the tangential pressure, which can be observed in the outer region of a field distribution that satisfies $\mu <\mu_{2}$; (iii) solutions that behave like those obtained from models with negative cosmological constant. In such a situation, the field $h^{a}$ plays the role of a cosmological constant., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

The planktonic dinoflagellate genus Centrodinium has been understudied, with the type species C. elongatum remaining undocumented since the original description. Here, we report C. elongatum isolated from Mazatlán, Mexican Pacific. In the chains, the posterior daughter cell with an incomplete apical horn shows the morphology of C. elongatum, while the anterior daughter cell with complete epitheca corresponds to C. pulchrum. For the first time, a species of Centrodinium sensu stricto (highly laterally flattened species with horns) was cultured. An unarmored life stage, known as Murrayella ovalis, derived from the spheroplast after ecdysis. In the rDNA molecular phylogenies, C. elongatum (=C. pulchrum) nested as basal to morphologically similar species (C. eminens and C. intermedium) and as a sister group of a former Murrayella species, C. punctatum. C. elongatum differs from C. eminens and C. intermedium in the chain formation, second apical (2′) plate not being divided, horns with coarse poroid ornamentation, and missing prominent distal spinules. The taxonomy of Centrodinium sensu stricto is revised, with a discussion in the identities of C. complanatum, C. eminens, and C. maximum. The name C. deflexum is restored as a senior synonym of C. intermedium and C. ovale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antioxidant supplementation in critical periods may be useful for improvement of piglet early viability and development. We have evaluated the effects of maternal perinatal diet inclusion of a high vitamin E level (VE, 100 mg all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate /kg), hydroxytyrosol (HT, 1.5 mg/kg), or their combination (VEHT), in comparison to a control diet (C, 30 mg all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate /kg), on the offspring homeostasis and metabolism, analysing the weaned piglets' adipose tissue transcriptome and adipocyte morphology. Diets were provided to pregnant Iberian sows (n = 48, 12 per treatment) from gestation day 85 to weaning (28 days postpartum) and 48 piglets (n = 12 per treatment) were sampled 5 days postweaning for dorsal subcutaneous adipose tissue analyses. RNA obtained from 6 animals for each diet was used for paired-end RNA sequencing. Results show that supplementation of sows' diet with either vitamin E or hydroxytyrosol had substantial effects on weaned piglet adipose transcriptome, with 664 and 587 genes being differentially expressed, in comparison to C, respectively (q-value<0.10, Fold Change>1.5). Genes upregulated in C were mainly involved in inflammatory and immune response, as well as oxidative stress, and relevant canonical pathways and upstream regulators involved in these processes were predicted as activated, such as TNF, IFNB or NFKB. Vitamin E, when supplemented alone at high dose, activated lipid biosynthesis functions, pathways and regulators, this finding being accompanied by increased adipocyte size. Results suggest an improved metabolic and antioxidant status of adipose tissue in animals born from sows supplemented with individual antioxidants, while the combined supplementation barely affected gene expression, with VEHT showing a prooxidant/proinflamatory functional profile similar to C animals. Different hypothesis are proposed to explain this unexpected result. Findings allow a deeper understanding of the processes taking place in adipose tissue of genetically fat animals and the role of antioxidants in the regulation of fat cells function. - Abstract
Today, online partial discharge (PD) measurements are common practice to assess the condition status of dielectrics in high-voltage (HV) electrical grids. However, when online PD measurements are carried out in electrical facilities, several disadvantages must be considered. Among the most important are high levels of changing electrical noise and interferences, signal phase couplings (cross-talk phenomena), and the simultaneous presence of various defects and difficulties in localizing and identifying them. In the last few decades, various PD-measuring systems have been developed to deal with these inconveniences and try to achieve the adequate supervision of electrical installations. In the state of the art, one of the main problems that electrical companies and technology developers face is the difficulty in characterizing the measuring system’s functionalities in laboratory setups or in real-world facilities, where simulated or real defects must be detected. This is mainly due to the complexity and costs that the laboratory setups entail and the fact that the facilities are permanently in service. Furthermore, in the latter scenario, owners cannot assign facilities to carry out the tests, which could cause irreversible damage. Additionally, with the aforementioned installations, a comparison of results over time in various locations is not possible, and noise conditions cannot be controlled to perform the characterizations in a correct way. To deal with the problems indicated, in this article, an affordable scale modular test platform that simulates an HV installation is presented, where real on-site PD measuring conditions are simulated and controlled. In this first development, the HV installation comprises a cable system connected at both ends to a gas-insulated substation (GIS). As the most common acquisition technique in online applications is based on the placement of high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) sensors in the grounding cables of facilities

- Abstract
Dozens of Roman authors included omens in their narratives, telling of a world of gods and men, of signs of the future and prodigious events. The mythical narrative that rises from those portents is tell-tale of the belief that gods sent signs of what the future held for Rome and its leaders. That collectively imagined world is the focus of this thesis, which attempts to study it through the analysis of imperial omens from the rise of Nerva to the death of Severus Alexander (framing them in a wider reality of Roman divination and its religious construction of power and its narratives). This thesis focuses on imperial omens as a phenomenon by itself and as a tool for studying the cosmovision and mythology of power in Ancient Rome. The priority is understanding which conception of imperial power (its explaining myths and imagined origins and limits) and which relationship between gods and community (and gods and emperors, the heads of the human community) is expressed in Roman imperial omens form Nerva to Severus Alexander (98-235 A.D.). From the detailed analysis of imperial omens and of the society and mental cosmos in which they made sense, this thesis reconstructed imperial power as it is expressed in imperial portents. In a world where political power was constructed and imagined in religious terms, that analysis revealed itself to be quite fruitful. Several elements were analysed throughout the thesis: the fundamental function of imperial omens; the ideological consuetudinary continuum in which they partook; their likely origin; their social and geographical audience; what gods are imagined participating in the narrative of power offered by the prodigies; how is the emperor conveyed; and which problems are posed by the Historia Augusta’s omens. By understanding religion as a mechanism linking the world as lived and the world as imagined, omens are concluded to be a sense-ascribing coping mechanism, a bridging tool of sorts explaining the chaos of human existence

- Abstract
- Abstract
Pig feeding prior to the extensive fattening phase might affect the final lipid profile and product quality. This study evaluates how maternal supplementation with vitamin E (VITE) (100 mg/kg), hydroxytyrosol (HXT) (1.5 mg/kg), or combined administration (VE + HXT) affects the piglet’s plasma and tissues’ fatty acid profiles and lipid stability according to the sow’s parity number (PN), as well as the possible changes to the lipid profile after extensive feeding. The sows’ PN affected the total fatty acid profile of plasma, muscle, and liver of piglets, with lower Δ-9 and Δ-6 desaturase indices but higher Δ-5 in those from primiparous (P) than multiparous (M) sows. Dietary VITE was more effective at decreasing C16:0 and saturated fatty acids in the muscle of piglets born from M than P sows, and modified the liver phospholipids in a different way. Sows’ supplementation with HXT increased C18:2n-6 in triglycerides and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in muscle phospholipids. In the liver, HXT supplementation also increased free-PUFA and free-n-3 fatty acids. However, lipid oxidation of piglets’ tissues was not affected by the antioxidant supplementation, and it was higher in the livers of piglets born from M sows. The fatty acid profile in the muscle of pigs after extensive feeding was not affected by the PN, but it was by the sows’ antioxidant supplementation, with positive effects on quality by both compounds.

- Abstract
Conclusions: Objective audiometric tests could constitute a valuable tool for detection of deafness. This could be especially useful in children (universal newborn hearing screening) and non-collaborative patients, who are especially difficult candidates for classic audiometry. The cochlear microphonic audiometry (CMA) technique offers the possibility of obtaining objective audiometric profiles, highly correlated with those obtained by pure tone audiometry (PTA). Therefore, CMA could be used as an alternative test to obtain the audiometric profile of these patients. Objective: The main purpose of the present study was to demonstrate that CMA provides objective audiometric profiles by avoiding active participation by the patient. Subjects and methods. CMA specific equipment, improved for non-invasive recording of cochlear microphonic potentials, was used. This tool plots the recordings obtained as the classic audiogram. Verification of the method was carried out in adult patients by comparing the PTA with the CMA audiometric profiles obtained for each patient. Results: Our findings showed that audiometric profiles obtained from CMA are highly correlated, without statistical differences, to those obtained with PTA. More than 81% of patients explored (91.67% at 250 Hz) exhibited differences below 10 dB(HL) between tests at all exploration frequencies, while a low number of cases showed differences over 20 dB(HL)., Depto. de Inmunología, Oftalmología y ORL, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
After a cochlear lesion or auditory nerve damage, afferent connections from auditory ganglia can be highly altered. This results in a clear reduction of auditory input and an alteration of connectivity of terminals on cochlear nuclei neurons. Such a process could stimulate the reorganization of the neural circuits and neuroplasticity. Cochlea removal has been demonstrated to be a good model in which to analyse brainstem neuroplasticity, particularly with regard to the cochlear nuclei. After cochlea removal three main periods of degeneration and regeneration were observed. Early effects, during the first week post lesion, involved acute degeneration with nerve ending oedema and degeneration. During the second and, probably, the third post lesion weeks, degeneration was still present, even though a limited and diffuse expression of GAP-43 started. Around 1 month post lesion, degeneration at the cochlear nuclei progressively disappeared and a relevant GAP-43 expression was found. We conclude that neuroplasticity leads neurons to modify their activity and/or their synaptic tree as a consequence of animal adaptation to learning and memory. For the human being neuroplasticity is involved in language learning and comprehension, particularly the acquisition of a second language. Neuroplasticity is important for therapeutic strategies, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants., Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Depto. de Inmunología, Oftalmología y ORL, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
The adult mammalian auditory receptor lacks any ability to repair and/or regenerate after injury. However, the late developing cochlea still contains some stem-cell-like elements that might be used to regenerate damaged neurons and/or cells of the organ of Corti. Before their use in any application, stem cell numbers need to be amplified because they are usually rare in late developing and adult tissues. The numerous re-explant cultures required for the progressive amplification process can result in a spontaneous differentiation process. This aspect has been implicated in the tumorigenicity of stem cells when transplanted into a tissue. The aim of this study has been to determine whether cochlear stem cells can proliferate and differentiate spontaneously in long-term cultures without the addition of any factor that might influence these processes. Cochlear stem cells, which express nestin protein, were cultured in monolayers and fed with DMEM containing 5% FBS. They quickly organized themselves into typical spheres exhibiting a high proliferation rate, self-renewal property, and differentiation ability. Secondary cultures of these stem cell spheres spontaneously differentiated into neuroectodermal-like cells. The expression of nestin, glial-fibrillary-acidic protein, vimentin, and neurofilaments was evaluated to identify early differentiation. Nestin expression appeared in primary and secondary cultures. Other markers were also identified in differentiating cells. Further research might demonstrate the spontaneous differentiation of cochlear stem cells and their teratogenic probability when they are used for transplantation., Depto. de Inmunología, Oftalmología y ORL, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub
