51. End-to-End Train Horn Detection for Railway Transit Safety

Abstract

The train horn sound is an active audible warning signal used for warning commuters and railway employees of the oncoming train(s), assuring a smooth operation and traffic safety, especially at barrier-free crossings. This work studies deep learning-based approaches to develop a system providing the early detection of train arrival based on the recognition of train horn sounds from the traffic soundscape. A custom dataset of train horn sounds, car horn sounds, and traffic noises is developed to conduct experiments and analysis. We propose a novel two-stream end-to-end CNN model (i.e., THD-RawNet), which combines two approaches of feature extraction from raw audio waveforms, for audio classification in train horn detection (THD). Besides a stream with a sequential one-dimensional CNN (1D-CNN) as in existing sound classification works, we propose to utilize multiple 1D-CNN branches to process raw waves in different temporal resolutions to extract an image-like representation for the 2D-CNN classification part. Our experiment results and comparative analysis have proved the effectiveness of the proposed two-stream network and the method of combining features extracted in multiple temporal resolutions. The THD-RawNet obtained better accuracies and robustness compared to those of baseline models trained on either raw audio or handcrafted features, in which at the input size of one second the network yielded an accuracy of 95.11% for testing data in normal traffic conditions and remained above a 93% accuracy for the considerable noisy condition of-10 dB SNR. The proposed THD system can be integrated into the smart railway crossing systems, private cars, and self-driving cars to improve railway transit safety.

Abstract

Auto-oscillations may occur in moving vehicles in the area where the tire interacts with the support base. The parameters of such oscillations depend on the sliding velocity in the contact patch. As they negatively affect the processes occurring in the electric drive and the mechanical transmission, reducing their energy efficiency, such processes can cause failures in various elements. This paper aims to conduct a theoretical study into the peculiarities of oscillatory processes in the nonlinear system and an experimental study of the auto-oscillation modes of an individual traction drive. It presents the theoretical basis used to analyze the peculiarities of oscillation processes, including their onset and course, the results of simulation mathematical modeling and the experimental studies into the oscillation phenomena in the movement of the vehicle towards the supporting base. The practical value of this study lies in the possibility to use the results in the development of algorithms for the exclusion of auto-oscillation phenomena in the development of vehicle control systems, as well as to use the auto-oscillation processes onset and course analysis methodology to design the electric drive of the driving wheels. Abstract

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized $8.5\,\text{GeV}$ photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson $\rho$(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of $s$-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer $t$ and are able to extract the $t$-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full $t$ range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced $\rho(770)$ differ by two units are negligible for $-t, Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The applicability of triangular silver nanoplates (TNPs) as a spectrophotometric reagent for the determination of mercury(II) in an aqueous solution was estimated. The method is based on the oxidation of TNPs with a mean edge length of 52 nm and thickness of 4 nm by mercury(II) ions, which is accompanied by a decrease in the surface plasmon resonance of nanoparticles. The effect of reaction time, pH of solution, and TNP concentration on the sensitivity of mercury(II) determination was studied. The limit of mercury(II) detection under the selected conditions was 0.022 [micro]g/mL. Abstract

We report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2~GeV up to 11.44~GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi-$proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states., Comment: 15 pages 18 figures

Abstract

The paper describes the developed curvilinear motion simulation model for a vehicle with two traction electric motors moving on a solid surface used to study the dynamic properties of a wheeled vehicle and to subject the developed methods to virtual testing. The simulation model of the electric all-wheel drive vehicle is carried out in the Simcenter Amesim environment to account for the dynamic characteristics and features of the vehicle. The simulation model was developed based on the drawn requirements while the assumptions were justified. Inertia characteristics, tire characteristics, suspension elements, grip characteristics, and surface and air resistance were considered, as these factors affect the vehicle longitudinal and transverse dynamics. The article presents the model implemented in the "Labcar" system and confirms its adequacy by comparing it with the data obtained during the full-scale prototype tests. The bench and range tests of a test vehicle with electric transmission equipped with a measuring complex confirmed the adequacy of the developed model. The results of comparative tests allow for the conclusion that the developed model complex is suitable for modeling purposes, including studying, debugging and initial calibrations of the algorithm of torque distribution on the driving axles of all-wheel drive electric vehicle. These measurements of $J/ψ$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states., 15 pages 18 figures

Abstract

A method of creation of aqueous solutions with silver nanoparticles for studying of fluorescence of hydrophobic compounds has been proposed for metallocomplexes of phthalocyanines. The effect of silver nanoparticles on the fluorescence of phthalocyanines metallocomplexes at room and low temperatures was studied. The addition of silver nanoparticles leads to plasmonic enhancement of signals in fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra of the compounds of interest from 1,5 to more than 7 times. The lifetimes and quantum yield of fluorescence were measured for solutions of metallophthalocyanines in binary mixtures and in binary mixtures with the addition of silver triangular nanoplates with shells of silicon dioxide.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp → Λ(1520)K+, via its subsequent decay to K−p. The measurement was performed\ud as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized\ud photon beam with Eγ = 8.2 GeV–8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon\ud energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t − t0). We compare\ud the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are\ud dominant in Λ(1520) photoproduction.

87. Sound Processing for Autonomous Driving

Abstract

Nowadays, a variety of intelligent systems for autonomous driving have been developed, which have already shown a very high level of capability. One of the prerequisites for autonomous driving is an accurate and reliable representation of the environment around the vehicle. Current systems rely on cameras, RADAR, and LiDAR to capture the visual environment and to locate and track other traffic participants. Human drivers, in addition to vision, have hearing and use a lot of auditory information to understand the environment in addition to visual cues. In this thesis, we present the sound signal processing system for auditory based environment representation. Sound propagation is less dependent on occlusion than all other types of sensors and in some situations is less sensitive to different types of weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog or rain. Various audio processing algorithms provide the detection and classification of different audio signals specific to certain types of vehicles, as well as localization. First, the ambient sound is classified into fourteen major categories consisting of traffic objects and actions performed. Additionally, the classification of three specific types of emergency vehicles sirens is provided. Secondly, each object is localized using a combined localization algorithm based on time difference of arrival and amplitude. The system is evaluated on real data with a focus on reliable detection and accurate localization of emergency vehicles. On the third stage the possibility of visualizing the sound source on the image from the autonomous vehicle camera system is provided. For this purpose, a method for camera to microphones calibration has been developed. The presented approaches and methods have great potential to increase the accuracy of environment perception and, consequently, to improve the reliability and safety of autonomous driving systems in general.

Abstract

Kinetic features of the interaction between thiocompounds differing in functional groups with triangular silver nanoplates in an aqueous solution are studied. Such interaction results in the aggregation of nanoplates, accompanied by a change in the absorption spectra of their solutions. The behavior of the systems is characterized using kinetic models of the zero–third order. Constants of aggregation are calculated for the selected models. The effect the structure of the thio compound has on the aggregation of triangular silver nanoplates is shown, and reasons for this effect are proposed.

Abstract

A new method for selective determination of bromides in natural waters, foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals has been developed. It is based on oxidation of bromides with dichromate, dynamic gas extraction of molecular bromine with an air flow and sensing by paper modified with silver triangular nanoplates (AgTNPs) as a colorimetric reagent. Interaction of AgTNPs with bromine resulted in the discoloration of the AgTNP-modified paper, which was monitored using a scanner. The high selectivity of the dynamic gas extraction for volatile bromine enabled the direct determination of bromides in mineral water, river and sea water, alga, shrimps, fish, bread and pharmaceuticals with minimal sample pretreatment. The limit of detection of bromide was found to be 0.02 mg L−1. The determination range was 0.05–1.5 mg L−1.

Abstract

We present a search for axion-like particles, $a$, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the $a$-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses $a\to\gamma\gamma$ and $a\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the GlueX detector. The search for $a\to\gamma\gamma$ decays is performed in the mass range of $180 < m_a < 480$ MeV, while the search for $a\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ decays explores the $600 < m_a < 720$ MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $a$-gluon coupling strength. Abstract

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp→Λ(1520)K+, via its subsequent decay to K−p. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory using a linearly polarized photon beam with Eγ=8.2GeV–8.8GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t−t0). We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in Λ(1520) photoproduction.

Abstract

One necessary condition for autonomous driving is an accurate and reliable representation of the environment around the vehicle. Current architectures rely on cameras, radars, and lidars to capture the visual environment and to localize and track other traffic participants. Human drivers can see but also hear and use a lot of auditory information for understanding the environment in addition to visual cues. In this paper, we present a pure sound localization and recognition system to extract an auditory representation of the environment. First, the environmental sound is classified into seven main categories of traffic objects followed by six specific kinds of sirens in an emergency case using a simple neural network layout. Second, each object is localized via a combined time-delay of arrival and amplitude-based localization algorithm. The system is evaluated on real-world data focusing on a robust detection and accurate localization of emergency vehicles.

Abstract

Silver triangular nanoplates (AgTNPs) is a promising and still relatively poorly studied colorimetric probe for sensing various organic compounds. In particular, they undergo aggregation in presence of thiols due to strong interaction with SH-group. We performed characterization of label-free AgTNPs as a colorimetric probe in their interaction with thiols of different functionality. Aggregation of AgTNPs upon the action of thiols is manifested by a decrease of AgTNPs surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and appearance of SPR band of AgTNPs aggregates in a long-wave region of a spectrum (700–800 nm). It can be used for sensitive spectrophotometric determination of thiols. Four thiols differing in their functional groups were tested. Limits of thiol detection in the selected optimal conditions increase in the series cysteamine
