Abstract

We report on a new measurement of N-14(p,gamma)O-15 for the ground state capture transition at E-p = 360, 380 and 400 keV, using the 400 kV LUNA accelerator. The true coincidence summing effect-the major source of error in the ground state capture determination-has been significantly reduced by using a Clover-type gamma detector.

in the present work both the (alpha,gamma) and (p,gamma) cross sections on the p-nucleus Cd-106 have been measured in the energy range relevant to the astrophysical p-process. The results are compared with the predictions of the statistical model calculations implemented with the NON-SMOKER code using different input parameters. The proton capture cross section has also been measured for Cd-108.

Abstract

The rate of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle of hydrogen burning is controlled by the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction. The reaction proceeds by capture to the ground states and several excited states in O-15. In order to obtain a reliable extrapolation of the excitation curve to astrophysical energy, fits in the R-matrix framework are needed. In an energy range that sensitively tests such fits, new cross section data are reported here for the four major transitions in the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction. The experiment has been performed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy. Using a composite germanium detector, summing corrections have been considerably reduced with respect to previous studies. The cross sections for capture to the ground state and to the 5181, 6172, and 6792 keV excited states in O-15 have been determined at 359, 380, and 399 keV beam energy. In addition, the branching ratios for the decay of the 278 keV resonance have been remeasured.

Abstract

The 15N(p,gamma)16O reaction lies at the intersection of the first and second CNO cycle of hydrogen burning. Recent R-matrix extrapolations suggest that its cross section may be lower by about a factor two with respect to previous work. Here we show new, direct experimental data on this reaction obtained at the LUNA 400 kV accelerator deep underground in the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy.

Abstract

The structure of C-17-20(6) nuclei was investigated by means of the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique using fragmentation reactions of radioactive beams. Based on particle-gamma and particle-gamma gamma coincidence data, level schemes are constructed for the neutron-rich C17-20 nuclei. The systematics of the first excited 2(+) states in the carbon isotopes is extended for the first time to A = 20 showing that in contrast to the case of the oxygen isotopes, the N = 14 subshell closure disappears. Experimental results are compared with shell-model calculations. Agreement between them is found only if a reduced neutron-neutron effective interaction is used. Implications of this reduced interaction in some properties of weakly bound neutron-rich Carbon are discussed., QC 20100525

Abstract

We have studied the structure of light neutron-rich nuclei around N = 16 by employing the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique using the fragmentation of secondary beams of Ne-25,Ne-26, Na-27,Na-28 and Mg-29,Mg-30 isotopes. This secondary-beam cocktail was obtained by the fragmentation of a 36 S beam at 77.5 MeV.A by the SISSI/GANIL facility. Abstract

In-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of radioactive beams have been performed in order to study the structure of excited states in neutron rich oxygen and carbon isotopes. For the produced fragments, gamma-ray energies, intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences have been measured. The experiment was performed at GANIL. New gamma-lines have been identified and placed in level schemes for C17-20. The non observation of any gamma-ray in O-23,O-24 suggests that their first excited states lie above the neutron threshold.
