Highlights • The complex geodynamic structure of the area is reflected in the wide range of compositions of the emitted fluids. • High salinity waters with hydrocarbon gases and a purely crustal He component were collected from deep wells. • Hyperalkaline waters with CH4- and H2-dominated gases are found in the ophiolite complex. • Shallow meteoric groundwaters in the southern part of the basin show a prevailing atmospheric component for dissolved gases. • A significant mantle component (He and C) is found in the dissolved gases of the northeastern sites. Abstract We investigated the geochemical features of the fluids circulating over the Amik Basin (SE Turkey–Syria border), which is crossed by the Northern extension of the DSF (Dead Sea Fault) and represents the boundary area of three tectonic plates (Anatolian, Arabian and African plates). We collected 34 water samples (thermal and cold from natural springs and boreholes) as well as 8 gas samples (bubbling and gas seepage) besides the gases dissolved in the sampled waters. The results show that the dissolved gas phase is a mixture of shallow (atmospheric) and deep components either of mantle and crustal origin. Coherently the sampled waters are variable mixtures of shallow and deep ground waters, the latter being characterised by higher salinity and longer residence times. The deep groundwaters (from boreholes deeper than 1000 m) have a CH4-dominated dissolved gas phase related to the presence of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The very unique tectonic setting of the area includes the presence of an ophiolitic block outcropping in the westernmost area on the African Plate, as well as basalts located to the North and East on the Arabic Plate. The diffuse presence of CO2-enriched gases, although diluted by the huge groundwater circulation, testifies a regional degassing activity. The EU fusion materials modelling programme was initiated in 2002 with the objective of developing a comprehensive set of computer modelling techniques and approaches, aimed at rationalising the extensive available experimental information on properties of irradiated fusion materials, developing capabilities for predicting the behaviour of materials under conditions not yet accessible to experimental tests, assessing results of tests involving high dose rates, and extrapolating these results to the fusion-relevant conditions. The programme presently gives emphasis to modelling a single class of materials, which are ferritic-martensitic EUROFER-type steels, and focuses on the investigation of key physical phenomena and interpretation of experimental observations. The objective of the programme is the development of computational capabilities for predicting changes in mechanical properties, hardening and embrittlement, as well as changes in the microstructure and phase stability of EUROFER and FeCr model alloys occurring under fusion reactor relevant irradiation conditions., QC 20110307

We review the current status of the European fusion materials modelling programme. We describe recent findings and outline potential areas for future development. Large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the structure of the point defects in alpha-Fe, and highlight the crucial part played by magnetism. The calculations give accurate migration energies of point defects and the strength of their interaction with He atoms. Kinetic models based on DFT results reproduce the stages of radiation damage recovery in iron, and stages of He-desorption from pre-implanted iron. Experiments aimed at validating the models will be carried out in the future using a multi-beam ion irradiation facility chosen for its versatility and rapid feedback.

The effects of spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) epitaxial films are investigated by means of current injection into perovskite ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor (F-I-S) heterostructures. These effects are compared with the injection of simple quasiparticles into control samples of perovskite nonmagnetic metal-insulator-superconductor (N-I-S). Systematic studies of the critical current density (J(c)) as a function of the injection current density (J(inj)), temperature (T), and the thickness (d) of the superconductor reveal drastic differences between the F-I-S and N-I-S heterostructures, with strong suppression of J(c) and a rapidly increasing characteristic transport length near the superconducting transition temperature T-c only in the F-I-S samples. The temperature dependence of the efficiency (etaequivalent toDeltaJ(c)/J(inj); DeltaJ(c): the suppression of critical current due to finite J(inj)) in the F-I-S samples is also in sharp contrast to that in the N-I-S samples, suggesting significant redistribution of quasiparticles in F-I-S due to the longer lifetime of spin-polarized quasiparticles. Application of conventional theory for nonequilibrium superconductivity to these data further reveal that a substantial chemical potential shift mu(*) in F-I-S samples must be invoked to account for the experimental observation, whereas no discernible chemical potential shift exists in the N-I-S samples, suggesting strong effects of spin-polarized quasiparticles on cuprate superconductivity. The characteristic times estimated from our studies are suggestive of anisotropic spin relaxation processes, possibly with spin-orbit interaction dominating the c-axis spin transport and exchange interaction prevailing within the CuO2 planes.
