In this paper, a reviewof work performed in the area of force modelling in metal cutting processes is presented. Past and present trends are described and criticised to compare their relevance with current requirements. Several approaches are reviewed, such as empirical, mechanistic and analytical models. Chips produced are raw materials for pulp paper and particleboard industries. Efficiency of these industries is partly due to particle size distribution. Mastering this distribution is not easy because of great dependence on cutting conditions and variability in material. This study aims at better understanding and prediction of chip fragmentation. It starts with a detailed description of cutting kinematic and interaction between knife and log. This leads to the numerical development of a generic slabber head. Chip fragmentation phenomena was studied through experiments in dynamic conditions. These experiments were carried out thanks to a pendulum (Vc = 400 m/min). It was instrumented with piezoelectric force sensors and high speed camera. Obtained results agreed very well with previous quasi-static experiments

National audience; L'obtention des caractéristiques des pièces usinées ainsi que la bonne maîtrise du procédé d'usinage sont liées aux efforts de coupe. De nombreux modèles d'efforts de coupe ont déjà été développés, mais ils sont souvent appliqués dans le cas d'opérations d'usinage élémentaires (coupe orthogonale ou oblique), ce qui limite leur utilisation à la communauté scientifique. La méthode de discrétisation d'arête permet de généraliser les applications de ces modèles à des géométries d'outils plus complexes. Néanmoins, les applications restent généralement limitées à des opérations d'usinage simples (chariotage, dressage, fraisage flanc...) plutôt éloignées des besoins industriels. D'autre part, les modèles mécanistiques sont généralement critiqués car nécessitant d'être calibrés à partir d'un trop grand nombre d'essais. La présente étude propose de minimiser le nombre d'essais nécessaires à l'identification. Pour cela, les coefficients d'un modèle mécanistique ont été estimés par identification inverse, à partir de différents nombres d'essais de chariotage. Le modèle ainsi identifié est comparé, pour chaque couple de coefficients, à des essais couvrant une large plage de conditions de coupe. Ce modèle est ensuite appliqué dans le cas d'une opération de contournage. Les résultats obtenus par modélisation à partir de la trajectoire théorique, mais aussi de la trajectoire mesurée à vide sur la machine, sont comparés avec les efforts mesurés lors de l'opération de contournage.

International audience; The 5 axis continuous milling is an advanced technique for free-form surfaces manufacturing. In finishing, this technique uses ball-end or hemispherical milling cutter. This type of operation for 5 axis milling allows the possibility to tilt the tool with two different angles. As a consequence, a mass of geometrical configurations exists and establishing accurate parameters is quite difficult to define. A geometrical model has been developed to find the effective cutting diameters and cutting speed on the cut and the finished surface. After an experimental validation, this study proposes an analysis of several 5 axis milling configurations in order to perform this technique.

Internationale.; International audience; Le fraisage de finition en 5 axes continus utilise souvent des fraises hémisphériques qui sont inclinées suivant deux angles par rapport à la surface usinée. Il en résulte des configurations géométriques variées et donc un choix délicat des paramètres. L'étude aborde deux points. Le premier repose sur une analyse géométrique déterminant les conditions d'engagement et de travail de l'arête de coupe. Le second, basé sur une analyse cinématique, traite du mode d'usinage. L'étude propose donc des critères permettant l'analyse de configurations d'usinage 5 axes afin de maitriser cette technique.

Collaboration avec le LTDS/ENISE The characterization of friction coefficients at the tool-chip-workpiece interface remains an issue. This paper presents a new experimental set-up able to simulate similar tribological phenomena as the ones occurring at the tool-chip-workpiece interface. Especially, this system aims to reach contact pressures up to 3 GPa and sliding velocities between 0 to 1000 m/min, and to obtain an open-tribosystem (continuous regeneration of the tool-workmaterial contact). This system has been applied to the characterization of the tool-chip-workpiece interface during the cutting of an AISI4142 treated steel with TiN coated tools. Two environments have been tested: dry cutting, lubrication with a basic mineral oil. The effect of the mineral oil has been investigated.

This paper presents a model for force prediction of superfinish turning operation on pure copper. The model is divided in two parts. The first part computes the forces acting on the rake face of the tool. The second part computes the forces on the clearance face that are much more important in superfinish machining than in conventional machining. thèse CEA financement CEA/SNECMA

Internationale.; International audience; L'étude innovante porte sur le micro fraisage d'un acier inoxydable 316L avec des micro fraises cylindriques en carbure de tungstène de diamètres inférieurs au millimètre, et avec des broches tournant jusqu'à 160 000 tr/min. Les investigations menées traitent de l'effet d'échelle (macro-micro) et sur la compréhension des phénomènes de coupe au travers de 'observation des micro outils, des copeaux, états de surfaces, bavures et variations d'énergies spécifiques de coupe. L’étude présentée constitue une première étape dont l’objectif final est l’élaboration d’une approche instrumentée de la coupe en micro fraisage, ouvrant à la compréhension les phénomènes intervenant dans la coupe à l’échelle micro d’acier inoxydables type 316L.

Collaboration avec le LTDS; International audience; This study aims at analyzing the tribochemical mechanisms of lubrication during the process of form tapping and consequently optimizing the formulation of the lubricant. In order to correlate the tribochemical reactions with the performance of a lubricant, we measure the alteration of tapping torque according to ASTM D5619 standard. The objective of the study also relates to the identification of the additives and the association of their properties to the performance of lubrication. The goal is to characterize the nature of the tribofilm created at the bottom of the threads which is the zone the most severely affected by the working tool. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is used to characterize the surface of formed threads. This study demonstrates a link between the sulphur reactions on the metallic surface and the friction reducing performance of lubricant during form tapping.

Threaded assembly is much used solution for engineering design and most of internal threads are obtained by a tapping process. Form tapping is an alternative to cut tapping. The technique of form tapping creates the thread by work material displacement and without chip. The characteristics of formed thread are quite different from those obtained by cut tapping. The study deals with form tapping applied to treated steels and also with the threaded holes produced. The thread formation is a key point of the process investigations. It is a three-dimensional plastic flow. The forming of the thread leads to strain hardening of the work material, which is involved in the tap wear. An analysis of the displacement, strain and stress field is proposed. The tool material, tapped material and the fluid significantly influence the plastic flow. The formed threads have superior geometric qualities as compared to those of the threads made by cut tapping. Furthermore, the tensile strength of thread formed in low carbon steel, under static test, is also greater due to the reinforcement of the work material by strain hardening., L'assemblage vissé est une solution largement utilisée dans la conception des systèmes mécaniques et l'essentiel des filetages intérieurs est obtenu par un procédé de taraudage. Le taraudage par déformation est une alternative au taraudage par coupe. La technique de taraudage par déformation permet la réalisation de filets par mise en forme de la matière sans copeau. Les caractéristiques des filets formés diffèrent donc de celles des filets obtenus par coupe. L'étude traite du procédé de taraudage par déformation appliqué aux aciers prétraités ainsi que des qualités des trous filets produits. La formation du filet est un point clé de l'étude du procédé. Il s'agit d'un écoulement plastique tridimensionnel. La mise en forme du filet s'accompagne d'un écrouissage de la matière qui a des conséquences sur l'usure des tarauds. Une analyse des champs de déplacement, de déformation et de contrainte est proposée. Les paramètres matériau taraudé, matériau d'outil et fluide modifient très sensiblement l'écoulement plastique. Les filets formés en tant que produit possèdent des qualités géométriques supérieures à celles des filets issus d'une opération de taraudage par coupe. D'autre part, la résistance mécanique en traction quasi-statique de filet formé dans un acier à bas carbone s'avère aussi plus élevé, du fait du renforcement de la matière par écrouissage.

The invention relates to a method for acquiring the optimized parameters of a machining operation in the application of COM methodology, comprising: providing a plurality of readings indicative of the specific cutting energy (Kc) during an equal plurality of tests carried out with an imposed value, that is different from one test to another by at least one variable representative of the cutting operations, one of said variables being the cutting speed (Vc) and another being the advance rate (f); next determining a range of values of each of said variables including the optimal value for said variable obtained by means of processing the results for carrying out the machining operation; characterized in that a specific program (10a) of the digital control (7) is used for obtaining a continuous variation of the values of the variable during a single machining pass for a test, and in that the data read are formed during said single pass by the different values of the torque current (Iq) of the motor of the machine pin from which the corresponding values of (Kc) are derived by means of computational processing.
