The aim of this study is to generate a first global overview of pressures and methods used to assess the environmental quality of rivers and streams using macroinvertebrates. In total, 314 peer-review studies were reviewed, published in the period 1997 – 2018, from developing economies in Africa, South-Central America, Mexico and Southern Asia. To establish a global perspective, the results from the literature review were compared to other compiled datasets, biomonitoring manuals, environmental surveys and literature reviews from Europe, North America and Australasia. The literature review from the developing economies showed that sampling was most usual during baseflow, using kick- or Surber sampling, with taxonomical identification levels mostly to genus or family. Assessments were most often done using metrics (singular and multimetrics; > 70% of the applications) and were based on community attributes related to richness and dominance (58% of studies), sensitivity (40%), diversity by heterogeneity (32%) and functional traits (25%). Within each category, the most used metrics were the richness and dominance of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT), Biological Monitoring Working Party scoring systems (BMWP/ASPT), Shannon-Wiener diversity and feeding traits. Overall, 92% of the reviewed studies reported that the use of macroinvertebrates, at least in some of their responses, was successful in detecting degradation of environmental quality in the investigated rivers. Given the many similarities in applied methods worldwide, at present, we consider that a global assessment of riverine environmental quality can be feasible by using family level identifications of macroinvertebrate samples. We propose a global common metric (multimetric), comprising three of the most common river assessment metrics from the reviewed literature, but also elsewhere, namely the BMWP/ASPT, Shannon-Wiener diversity and richness of EPT. Recent concerns regarding the global state of nature and consequences for freshwater communities, as reported by the intergovernmental science-policy platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services (IPBES), emphasize the urgent need for such a synthesis. A number of epigenetic modulating chemicals are known to affect multiple generations of a population from a single ancestral exposure, thus posing transgenerational hazards. The present study aimed to establish a high-throughput (HT) analytical workflow for cost-efficient concentration-response analysis of epigenetic and phenotypic effects, and to support the development of novel Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) networks for DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitor-mediated transgenerational effects on aquatic organisms. The model DNMT inhibitor 5-azacytidine (5AC) and the model freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna were used to generate new experimental data and served as prototypes to construct AOPs for aquatic organisms. Targeted HT bioassays (DNMT ELISA, MS-HRM and qPCR) in combination with multigenerational ecotoxicity tests revealed concentration-dependent transgenerational (F0-F3) effects of 5AC on total DNMT activity, DNA promoter methylation, gene body methylation, gene transcription and reproduction. Top sensitive toxicity pathways related to 5AC exposure, such as apoptosis and DNA damage responses were identified in both F0 and F3 using Gaussian Bayesian network modeling. Two novel epigenetic AOP networks on DNMT inhibitor mediated one-generational and transgenerational effects were developed for aquatic organisms and assessed for the weight of evidence. • δ13C, δ15N were analyzed for invertebrates from the river, the shoreline and habitats adjacent to the riparian zone. • River restoration enhances trophic linkages between stream food webs and riparian consumers. • Indicated especially by the elevated trophic position of riparian consumers. • Aquatic-terrestrial linkages are promoted by the diversification of riparian habitats. Hydromorphological river restoration can significantly alter habitat configuration and modify invertebrate assemblages of rivers and floodplains. However, the consequences of these changes for ecosystem functioning and aquatic-terrestrial interactions are not known. As a restored shoreline has a more heterogeneous structure compared to a straightened river, restoration is likely to impact aquatic-terrestrial linkages in multiple ways, which might be captured based on biomarker indicators to characterize changes in food web functioning. We conducted a large scale comparative study targeting eleven river restoration projects in central and northern Europe to assess effects of river restoration on trophic patterns across the aquatic-terrestrial interface. We investigated the isotopic composition (δ13C, δ15N) of prey and of invertebrate consumers stratifying between the aquatic, riparian and terrestrial zones. The isotopic distance of riparian arthropods to instream macroinvertebrates and terrestrial arthropods was used as a measure of trophic linkage, and its variation with riparian habitat composition was quantified. Restoration enhanced aquatic-terrestrial linkages, indicated especially by differentiation in the δ15N isotopic signatures between aquatic, riparian and terrestrial consumers, rather than by δ13C signatures. The δ15N isotopic signatures of riparian arthropods revealed a higher relative trophic position in restored sections (δ15N Restored : 8.64‰, n = 11) as compared to non-restored sections (δ15N Degraded : 8.05‰, n = 11), lending support to the conjecture that restoration increased the proportion of more highly enriched aquatic prey (δ15N Restored : 10.01‰; δ15N Degraded : 10.38‰) while simultaneously reducing the share of lower enriched terrestrial prey (δ15N Restored : 4.88‰; δ15N Degraded : 5.53‰). Riparian habitat diversity and the share of exposed sand and gravel bars were positively related to the strength of aquatic-terrestrial linkages (R2 = 0.28 and R2 = 0.31, respectively), pointing to the importance of habitat diversification in the riparian zone in promoting trophic linkages between river and floodplain. These findings expand our understanding of the multifaceted outcomes of hydromorphological restoration, beyond biodiversity in the aquatic environment. It highlights the need to expand our current set of indicators in order to mechanistic understand restoration effects on ecological networks spanning across boundaries. 1. Emergence and inland dispersal of adult stoneflies (Plecoptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera) from Broadstone Stream, an acidic and iron-rich stream in southern England, were studied over 10 months in 1996–1997. Fifteen pyramidal emergence traps were placed randomly in a 200-m stretch. Three Malaise traps were placed above the stream and six more on each side (one wooded, one open) along a transect at distances of 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 m from the channel. 2. More than 16 000 stoneflies, belonging to 11 species, and just under 400 caddisflies (22 species) were caught. Four dominant stoneflies (Leuctra fusca, Leuctra nigra, Leuctra hippopus and Nemurella pictetii) accounted for 96% and 95% of the catches in the emergence and Malaise traps, respectively. Two caddisflies (Plectrocnemia conspersa and Potamophylax cingulatus) accounted for 63% of the catch in the Malaise traps. Few caddisflies were taken in emergence traps. 3. The emergence periods of L. fusca, L. nigra and L. hippopus were well-defined and unimodal, whereas that of N. pictetii was prolonged and erratic. Overall, more females (1285) emerged than males (740). 4. Female stoneflies and caddisflies were in the majority in the Malaise traps above the stream. On land, significantly more females than males of L. fusca, L. nigra and P. cingulatus were caught. The sex ratio of the remaining species did not deviate significantly from 1:1. 5. The three Malaise traps placed above the stream caught most of the stoneflies though there was also dispersal away from the channel, the numbers caught declining with distance. Exponential models explained between 67% and 99% of the variation in numbers of individuals with distance from the channel in the four common stoneflies. Half the individuals went less than 11–16 m from the stream, while 90% travelled less than 51 m. Significantly more L. nigra and N. pictetii were caught in the woodland than on the open side, whereas L. hippopus showed no overall preference for either side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
