AFTER FORMING at Columbia University, the boat-shoe-wearing blog-loved indie-pop crew toned down the sunny globe-trotting guitars of their 2008 debut and stared down quarter-life crisis with a broodingly lovely album of reflections on morality, God, uncertainty, and romantic decay; fittingly, they debuted Modern Vampire's first single, "Unbelievers", dressed as skeletons on late-night TV just days after Hurricane Sandy shut down New York, and on songs like "Diane Young" and "Hannah Hunt", Ezra Koenig turns the search for faint glints of redemption in his own emotional wreckage into a drama of Dylan-esque grandeur. Abstract

Introduction: This paper offers a staged view of individual psychological development based on the research of Clare W. Graves and the theory popularly known as Spiral Dynamics Integral. Objectives: To describe each of the stages as identified by the theory and relate the ways that they appear in individuals from the perspective of healthy and damaged aspects. Methods: The paper presents an analytical, observational and experiential viewpoint based on what the theory tells us to expect and on experience gained, both personal and reports from others, in the varying practice arenas of coach, mentor, parent and trainer, as well as on personal experience. Results: There are clear patterns in personal development and behaviour that correspond to the predictions of the Graves paradigm in its evolutionary, societal and organisational descriptions and predictions. These patterns can be related to both cultural context and individual upbringing. They offer a valuable lens for observation and understanding of psychological difficulties and useful prescriptive guidance for parenting that will act to reduce such difficulties. Conclusions: The paper offers a strong basis for the use of the Spiral Dynamics lens as an additional perspective when working with individuals, and for further detailed research into the way that an individual forms their worldview and creates meaning as an adaptive process for thriving under differing conditions of existence. 61. Structure and behavior of four-helix bundle cavitein systems

Abstract

This thesis will investigate the sequence to structure relationship of protein folding through the use of template assembled synthetic proteins (TASPs). A cavitand template will be used to bring together four de novo designed peptides to form a four-helix bundled TASP, referred to as a cavitein. The first chapter will detail the rationale behind de novo protein design and use of TASPs to study protein folding. Chapter 1 will also review past and current work relating to the design and structural characterization of synthetic de novo proteins. Chapter 2 will investigate the context dependency of leucine residues within the hydrophobic core of a cavitein. Single leu to ala substitutions resulted in similar destabilization of the cavitein. However, replacing the middle leucine compromised the structure and stability of the cavitein. It was concluded that the middle leucine acted as a linchpin within the peptide sequence. Chapter 3 will examine the first reported crystallization of a TASP. The crystal structure is revealed as a dimer. The cavitein (Q4) was thought to be monomeric. The chapter will compare the solution structures of both the parent and Q4 cavitein. It was found that both parent and Q4 have a weak dimer association at relatively high concentrations. Chapter 4 will discuss glutamine variants used to probe the tolerance of dimer crystallization with respect to sequence variation. The chapter uncovers a key lattice contact for cavitein dimer lattice nucleation and stabilization. Furthermore, in an attempt to control the oligomeric state of caviteins, Chapter 4 will also discuss histidine metal binding caviteins and disulfide caviteins. A cavitein designed to favor a dimer via histidine metal binding was synthesized and crystallized revealing a potential metal binding center. Caviteins designed to favor a monomer conformation were also designed involving either histidine metal binding or disulfide bridges. Both methods proved successful in their monomeric design as shown by solution characterization. Chapter 5 will conclude and summarize the work throughout this thesis. The chapter will also suggest future projects expanding on studies within this thesis as well as suggest other projects pertaining to cavitein research.

Abstract

A Ku-band IMPATT oscillator with two distinct output power ports was injection-locked alternately at both ports. The transmission locking bandwidth was nearly the same for either port. The lower free running power port had a reflection locking bandwidth that was narrower than its transmission locking one. Just the opposite was found at the other port. A detailed analytical model for two-port injection-locked oscillators is presented, and its results agree quite well with the experiments. A critique of the literature on this topic is included to clear up misconceptions and errors. It is concluded that two-port injection-locked oscillators may prove useful in certain communication systems.

Abstract

It is shown how the complete field of the electron beam may be incorporated into the transmission line model theory of the traveling wave tube (TWT). The fact that the longitudinal component of the field due to the bunched beam is not used when formulating the beam-to-circuit coupling equation is not well-known. The fundamental partial differential equation for the traveling wave field is developed and compared with the older (now standard) one. The equation can be solved numerically using the same algorithms, but now the coefficients can be updated continuously as the calculation proceeds down the tube. The coefficients in the older equations are primarily derived from preliminary measurements and some trial and error. The newer coefficients can be found by a recursive method, since each has a well defined physical interpretation and can be calculated once a reasonable first trial solution is postulated. The results of the new expression were compared with those of the older forms, as well as to a field theory model to show the ease in which a reasonable fit to the field prediction is obtained. A complete summary of the existing transmission line modeling of the TWT is given to explain the somewhat vague ideas and techniques in the general area of drifting carrier-traveling circuit wave interactions. The basic assumptions and inconsistencies of the existing theory and areas of confusion in the general literature are examined and hopefully cleared up.

88. Improvements to propositional satisfiability search algorithms

Abstract

In this dissertation, we examine complete search algorithms for SAT, the satisfiability problem for propositional formulas in conjunctive normal form. SAT is NP-complete, easy to think about, and one of the most important computational problems in the field of Artificial Intelligence. From an empirical perspective, the central problem associated with these algorithms is to implement one that runs as quickly as possible on a wide range of hard SAT problems. This in turn require identifying a set of useful techniques and programming guidelines. Another important problem is to identify the techniques that do not work well in practice, and provide qualitative reasons for their poor performance whenever possible. This dissertation addresses all four of these problems. Our thesis is that any efficient SAT search algorithm should perform only a few key technique at each node of the search tree. Furthermore, any implementation of such an algorithm should perform these techniques in quadratic time total down any path of the search tree, and use only a linear amount of space. We have justified these claims by writing POSIT (for PrOpositional SatIsfiability Testbed), a SAT tester which runs more quickly across a wide range of hard SAT problems than any other SAT tester in the literature on comparable platforms. On a Sun SPARCStation 10 running SunOS 4.1.3$\sb{-}$U1, POSIT can solve hard random 400-variable 3-SAT problems in about 2 hours on the average. In general, it can solve hard n-variable random 3-SAT problems with search trees of size $O(2\sp{n/18.7}).$ In addition to justifying these claims, this dissertation describes the most significant achievements of other researchers in this area, and discusses all of the widely known general techniques for speeding up SAT search algorithms. It should be useful to anyone interested in NP-complete problems or combinatorial optimization in general, and it should be particularly useful to researchers in either Artificial Intelligence
