Abstract

International audience; A new geophysical and geological dataset, acquired during the SISMAORE oceanographic campaign (2020-2021), reveals a recent tectonic and volcanic deformation distributed over 130km in the abyssal plain that permit to unravel the unconstrained lithospheric plate boundaries between Lwandle and Somalia blocks and the controversial origin of the Comoros Archipelago.Two recent submarine volcanic and tectonic provinces of 5000km2 , with a large number of varied volcanic structures and faults, are unveiled: the N160° N'Droundé (north of GrandeComore) and the N130° Mwezi provinces (north of Anjouan/Mayotte). Dredged Mwezi rocks suggest a recent gas-rich volcanic activity. It is also identified a recent N130° trending volcanic structures (cones, lava flows, eruptive fissures) between Anjouan and Mayotte in agreement with the presence of shallow earthquakes, and also recent lava flows on the southern flanks of the Grande Comore and Moheli. Southwards, recent sedimentation is important with no volcanism and deformation. A consistent sedimentary thickness covers the flanks of Mayotte and Anjouan and the presence of large areas of submarine instability at the foot and on the slope of the islands is confirmed.These first observations suggest a transtensional deformation, accommodated by dextral strike-slip motion, strongly influenced by pre-existing structuration of the Mesozoic oceanic crust and by the East Africa Rift system. The 130km wide zone of intraplate deformationcharacterizes an immature lithospheric plate boundary of the north Lwandle block.

Abstract

The direct contact of warm ocean water with the front and base of ice shelves is the main driver for accelerated mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet. We present a compilation of observations from various projects and methodological approaches applied over the last decade along the Dronning Maud Land coast and highlight their importance for understanding the ice-ocean interactions. With a focus on the Ekström ice shelf, these include spatially continuous seismic observations in combination with airborne gravity inversion to yield sub-shelf bathymetry and geomorphological evidence of past ice-flow activity; ice-dynamic numerical modelling to investigate the role of seafloor/subglacial substrate characteristics to enhance or reduce ice-sheet extent and advance/retreat rates; sub-shelf CTD measurements to determine ocean properties driving basal melting; satellitebased remote sensing to determine ice-shelf height changes and spatially-distributed basal melting; and point measurements of basal melt with surface-based phase-sensitive radar to determine ocean-driven melt and validate remote-sensing products. As the Dronning Maud Land coast plays a critical role in preconditioning the water mass of the coastal current before it enters the Filcher ice-shelf cavity, we argue that a coordinated inter- and transdisciplinary observational network is required to facilitate monitoring a potential ice-sheet mass loss in this part of Antarctica.

The Norwegian-Greenland Sea (NGS) in the NE Atlantic comprises diverse tectonic regimes and structural features including sub-oceanic basins of different ages, microcontinents and conjugate volcanic passive margins, between the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge in the south and the Arctic Ocean in the north. We summarize the tectonic evolution of the area and highlight the complexity of the conjugate volcanic and rifted margins up to lithospheric rupture in the NGS. The highly magmatic breakup in the NGS was diachronous and initiated as isolated and segmented seafloor spreading centres. The early seafloor spreading system, initiating in the Early Eocene, gradually developed into atypical propagating systems with subsequent breakup(s) following a step-by-step thinning and rupture of the lithosphere. Newly-formed spreading axes propagated initially towards local Euler poles, died out, migrated or jumped laterally, changed their propagating orientation or eventually bifurcated. With the Palaeocene onset of volcanic rifting, breakup-related intrusions may have localized deformation and guided the final axis of breakup along distal regions already affected by pre-magmatic Late Cretaceous-Palaeocene and older extensional phases. The final line of lithospheric breakup may have been controlled by highly oblique extension, associated plate shearing and/or melt intrusions before and during Seaward Dipping Reflectors (SDRs) formation. The Inner SDRs and accompanying volcanics formed preferentially either on thick continental ribbons and/or moderately thinned continental crust. The segmented and diachronic evolution of the NGS spreading activity is also reflected by a time delay of 1–2 Myrs expected between the emplacement of the SDRs imaged at the Møre and Vøring margins. Abstract

The breakup of Pangaea was accompanied by extensive, episodic, magmatic activity. Several Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) formed, such as the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) and the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP). Here, we review the chronology of Pangaea breakup and related large-scale magmatism. We review the Triassic formation of the Central Atlantic Ocean, the breakup between East and West Gondwana in the Middle Jurassic, the Early Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic, the Cretaceous separation of India from Antarctica, and finally the formation of the North Atlantic in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. We demonstrate that throughout the dispersal of Pangaea, major volcanism typically occurs distal from the locus of rift initiation and initial oceanic crust accretion. There is no location where extension propagates away from a newly formed LIP. Instead, LIPs are coincident with major lithosphere-scale shear movements, aborted rifts and splinters of continental crust rifted far out into the oceanic domain. These observations suggest that a fundamental reappraisal of the causes and consequences of breakup-related LIPs is in order.

Abstract

The shape of ice shelf cavities are a major source of uncertainty in understanding ice-ocean interactions. This limits assessments of the response of the Antarctic ice sheets to climate change. Here we use vibroseis seismic reflection surveys to map the bathymetry beneath the Ekstrom Ice Shelf, Dronning Maud Land. The new bathymetry reveals an inland-sloping trough, reaching depths of 1,100 m below sea level, near the current grounding line, which we attribute to erosion by palaeo-ice streams. The trough does not cross-cut the outer parts of the continental shelf. Conductivity-temperature-depth profiles within the ice shelf cavity reveal the presence of cold water at shallower depths and tidal mixing at the ice shelf margins. It is unknown if warm water can access the trough. The new bathymetry is thought to be representative of many ice shelves in Dronning Maud Land, which together regulate the ice loss from a substantial area of East Antarctica. Plain Language Summary Antarctica is surrounded by floating ice shelves, which play a crucial role in regulating the flow of ice from the continent into the oceans. The ice shelves are susceptible to melting from warm ocean waters beneath them. In order to better understand the melting, knowledge of the shape and depth of the ocean cavity beneath ice shelves is crucial. In this study, we present new measurements of the sea floor depth beneath Ekstrom Ice Shelf in East Antarctica. The measurements reveal a much deeper sea floor than previously known. We discuss the implications of this for access of warm ocean waters, which can melt the base of the ice shelf and discuss how the observed sea floor features were formed by historical ice flow regimes. Although Ekstrom Ice Shelf is relatively small, the geometry described here is thought to be representative of the topography beneath many ice shelves in this region, which together regulate the ice loss from a substantial area of East Antarctica.
