Carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction (CO2ER) has attracted considerable attention as a technology to recycle CO2 into raw materials for chemicals using renewable energies. We recently found that Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (Zn-Al LDH) have the CO-forming CO2ER activity. However, the activity was only evaluated by using the liquid-phase CO2ER. In this study, Ni-Al and Ni-Fe LDHs as well as Zn-Al LDH were synthesized using a facile coprecipitation process and the gas-phase CO2ER with the LDH-loaded gas-diffusion electrode (GDE) was examined. The products were characterized by XRD, STEM-EDX, BF-TEM and ATR-IR spectroscopy. In the ATR-IR results, the interaction of CO2 with Zn-Al LDH showed a different carbonates evolution with respect to other LDHs, suggesting a different electrocatalytic activity. The LDH-loaded GDE was prepared by simple drop-casting of a catalyst ink onto carbon paper. For gas-phase CO2ER, only Zn-Al LDH exhibited the CO2ER activity for carbon monoxide (CO) formation. By using different potassium salt electrolytes affording neutral to strongly basic conditions, such as KCl, KHCO3 and KOH, the gas-phase CO2ER with Zn-Al LDH-loaded GDE showed 1.3 to 2.1 times higher partial current density for CO formation than the liquid-phase CO2ER.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a powerful tool for estimating brain connectivity with both good spatial and temporal resolution. It is particularly helpful in epilepsy to characterize non-invasively the epileptic networks. However, using MEG to map brain networks requires solving a difficult inverse problem that introduces uncertainty in the activity localization and connectivity measures. Our goal here was to compare independent component analysis (ICA) followed by dipole source localization and the linearly constrained minimum-variance beamformer (LCMV-BF) for characterizing regions with interictal epileptic activity and their dynamic connectivity. After a simulation study, we compared ICA and LCMV-BF results with intracerebral EEG (stereotaxic EEG, SEEG) recorded simultaneously in 8 epileptic patients, which provide a unique ‘ground truth’ to which non-invasive results can be confronted. We compared the signal time courses extracted applying ICA and LCMV-BF on MEG data to that of SEEG, both for the actual signals and the dynamic connectivity computed using cross-correlation (evolution of links in time).With our simulations, we illustrated the different effect of the temporal and spatial correlation among sources on the two methods. While ICA was more affected by the temporal correlation but robust against spatial configurations, LCMV-BF showed opposite behavior. Moreover, ICA seems more suited to retrieve the simulated networks.In case of real patient data, good MEG/SEEG correlation and good localization were obtained in 6 out of 8 patients. In 4 of them ICA had the best performance (higher correlation, lower localization distance). In terms of dynamic connectivity, the evolution in time of the cross-correlation links could be retrieved in 5 patients out of 6, however, with more variable results in terms of correlation and distance. In two patients LCMV-BF had better results than ICA. In one patient the two methods showed equally good outcomes, and in the remaining two patients ICA performed best.In conclusion, our results obtained by exploiting simultaneous MEG/SEEG recordings suggest that ICA and LCMV-BF have complementary qualities for retrieving the dynamics of interictal sources and their network interactions.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are two innovative classes of porous coordination polymers. MOFs are three-dimensional materials made up of secondary building blocks comprised of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands whereas COFs are 2D or 3D highly porous organic solids made up by light elements (i.e., H, B, C, N, O). Both MOFs and COFs, being highly conjugated scaffolds, are very promising as photoactive materials for applications in photocatalysis and artificial photosynthesis because of their tunable electronic properties, high surface area, remarkable light and thermal stability, easy and relative low-cost synthesis, and structural versatility. These properties make them perfectly suitable for photovoltaic application: throughout this review, we summarize recent advances in the employment of both MOFs and COFs in emerging photovoltaics, namely dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) organic photovoltaic (OPV) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs). MOFs are successfully implemented in DSSCs as photoanodic material or solid-state sensitizers and in PSCs mainly as hole or electron transporting materials. An innovative paradigm, in which the porous conductive polymer acts as standing-alone sensitized photoanode, is exploited too. Conversely, COFs are mostly implemented as photoactive material or as hole transporting material in PSCs.

Formamide has been recognized in the literature as a key species in the formation of the complex molecules of life, such as nucleobases. Furthermore, several studies reported the impact of mineral phases as catalysts for its decomposition/polymerization processes, increasing the conversion and also favoring the formation of specific products. Despite the progresses in the field, in situ studies on these mineral-catalyzed processes are missing. In this work, we present an in situ UV-Raman characterization of the chemical evolution of formamide over amorphous SiO2 samples, selected as a prototype of silicate minerals. The experiments were carried out after reaction of formamide at 160 °C on amorphous SiO2 (Aerosil OX50) either pristine or pre-calcined at 450 °C, to remove a large fraction of surface silanol groups. Our measurements, interpreted on the basis of density functional B3LYP-D3 calculations, allow to assign the spectra bands in terms of specific complex organic molecules, namely, diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN), 5-aminoimidazole (AI), and purine, showing the role of the mineral surface on the formation of relevant prebiotic molecules.

In this article we report on the spectroscopic and adsorptive studies done on Ce(III)-based MOF possessing, upon desolvation, open metal sites, and a discrete surface area. The Ce-based MOF was synthesized from terephthalic acid linker (H2BDC) and Ce3+ cations by the classical solvothermal method. Preliminary powder X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the obtained materials corresponded to the ones reported by other authors. Spectroscopic techniques, such as XAS and in situ FTIR with probe molecules were used. In situ FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the successful removal of DMF molecules within the pore system at temperatures above 250 °C. Moreover, the use of CO as a probe molecule evidenced the presence of a Ce3+ open metal sites. Detailed volumetric and calorimetric CO2 adsorption studies are also reported.

CO2 is an important by-product in epoxides synthesis, accounting for 0.02% of worldwide greenhouse emissions. The CO2 cycloaddition to ethylene and propylene oxides is an important class of reactions due to the versatile nature of the corresponding organic carbonates as chemical feedstocks. We report that these reactions can be catalyzed by ZIF-8 (Zeolitic Imidazole Framework-8) in the absence of solvent or co-catalyst and in mild conditions (40 °C and 750 mbar). In situ infrared spectroscopy places the onset time for ethylene and propylene carbonate formation to 80 and 30 min, respectively. Although there is low catalytic activity, these findings suggest the possibility to cut the CO2 emissions from epoxides production through their direct conversion to these highly valuable chemical intermediates, eliminating de facto energetically demanding steps as the CO2 capture and storage.

Mineral surfaces have been demonstrated to play a central role in prebiotic reactions, which are understood to be at the basis of the origin of life. Among the various molecules proposed as precursors for these reactions, one of the most interesting is formamide. Formamide has been shown to be a pluripotent molecule, generating a wide distribution of relevant prebiotic products. In particular, the outcomes of its reactivity are strongly related to the presence of mineral phases acting as catalysts toward specific reaction pathways. While the mineral–products relationship has been deeply studied for a large pool of materials, the fundamental description of formamide reactivity over mineral surfaces at a microscopic level is missing in the literature. In particular, a key step of formamide chemistry at surfaces is adsorption on available interaction sites. This report aims to investigate the adsorption of formamide over a well-defined amorphous silica, chosen as a model mineral surface. An experimental IR investigation of formamide adsorption was carried out and its outcomes were interpreted on the basis of first principles simulation of the process, adopting a realistic model of amorphous silica.
