Introduction There is currently no child centred checklist available to guide ethical research methodology and reporting [1,2]. This project developed the first Child Research Checklist (CRC) with input from international experts in the field of child centred research. This checklist will maximise the core principles of respect,beneficence and justice by guiding child research activities. The final CRC (Stage 4) will assist researchers to plan methodologies to meet ethical approval; build international collaborative research capacity; and embed a research culture aligned to drive safety, quality and sustainability in research with children [1,2,3] ...

We gave children the opportunity to share a piece of artwork thatreflected something about their experience of life during COVID-19restrictions (March-May 2020). The descriptions, stories and poemspresented in this e-book have been transferred verbatim from theoriginal submissions. For each submission, we asked about the level of COVID-19restrictions experienced by the child at the time of their entry. Theselevels consisted of: * None (no change to normal living routine)* Minimal (e.g. still attending school, but not allowed to play withfriends after school)* Some (e.g. still attending school, but not allowed to play withfriends after school and needed to stay 1.5 -2 meters away)* Moderate (e.g. home schooling, able to go out to parks)* Severe (not allowed to leave the family home)* Other As the International Network for Child and Family Centered Care, ourvision is to facilitate growth, advancement and leadership in child andfamily centred care education, practice, theory and research. AIM: To develop and psychometrically test the needs of children questionnaire (NCQ), a new instrument to measure school-aged children's self-reported psychosocial physical and emotional needs in paediatric wards. DESIGN: This is an instrument development study based on recommendations for developing a reliable and valid questionnaire. METHOD: The NCQ was developed over three phases between February 2013-April 2017 and included item generation; content adequacy assessment; questionnaire administration; factor analysis; internal consistency assessment and construct validity. Psychometric properties were assessed after 193 school-aged children completed the needs of children's questionnaire in four paediatric areas in Australia and New Zealand. RESULTS: The development and validation of the NCQ over two countries resulted in a 16-item, four-category tool to measure the self-reported importance and fulfilment of school-aged children's needs in hospital. Cronbach's alpha for the combined samples was 0.93. CONCLUSION: The NCQ bridges a gap to measure the level of importance and fulfilment of school-aged children's self-reported needs in hospital. Future testing and validation is needed in other paediatric areas and countries. IMPACT: The 16-item NCQ is a valid measure to evaluate if the quality of care delivered and received in hospital is in line with what children self-report as important and required and to date indicates good usability and utility. Child self-reports are essential to inform healthcare delivery, policy, research and theory development from a child and family-centred care lens that honours the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the best interests of the child.

The activity will illustrate the steps required to develop, validate and psychometrically test a new tool, the needs of children's questionnaire, as generated by the self-reported experiences of school aged children in hospital.

The international child and family research network includes a wide range of multidisciplinary experts within the field of child health from low, middle and high income countries. This worldwide collaboration will result in recommendations for nursing education, theory, practice and research from an international multicultural perspective.

Family-centered care (FCC) purports that unlimited presence and involvement of the family in the care of the hospitalized child will optimize the best outcome for the child, family, and institution. A systematic appraisal was conducted of peer-reviewed, English-language, primary quantitative research conducted within a pediatric critical care setting reported from 1998 to 2014. The aim of this review was to explore the parents’, hospitalized child’s, and health care providers’ perception of FCC within pediatric critical care. Fifty-nine articles met the criteria that generated themes of stress, communication, and parents’ and children’s needs. This review highlighted that communication tailored to meet the parents’ and child’s needs is the key to facilitating FCC and positive health outcomes. Health care providers need to be available to provide clinical expertise and support throughout the health care journey. Future initiatives, education, and research are needed to evaluate the benefits of parent- and child-led FCC practice.

In a critical review of the literature to assess the efficacy of monotherapy and subsequent combinant anticonvulsant therapy in the treatment of neonatal seizures, four studies were examined; three randomised control trials and one retrospective cohort study. Each study used phenobarbital for monotherapy with doses reaching a maximum of 40mg/kg. Anticonvulsant drugs used in conjunction with phenobarbitone for combinant therapy included midazolam, clonazepam, lorazepam, phenytoin and lignocaine. Each study used an electroencephalograph for seizure diagnosis and neonatal monitoring when determining therapy efficacy and final outcome assessments. Collectively the studies suggest neither monotherapy nor combinant therapy are entirely effective in seizure control. Monotherapy demonstrated a 29% - 50% success rate for complete seizure control whereas combinant therapy administered after the failure of monotherapy demonstrated a success rate of 43% - 100%. When these trials were combined the overall success for monotherapy was 44% (n = 34/78) and for combinant therapy 72% ( n = 56/78). Though the evidence was inconclusive, it would appear that combinant therapy is of greater benefit to infants unresponsive to monotherapy. Further research such as multi-site randomised controlled trials using standardised criteria and data collection are required within this specialised area.
