Psychotherapists are susceptible to prevailing negative stereotypes that exist in society at large. Inappropriate negative attitudes toward depressed and ill patients can adversely affect interactions with such clients. The authors examined the reactions of psychologists to vignettes that described a client who emitted either depressed or nondepressed behavior and who varied in terms of cancer prognosis. Clinicians had negative mood reactions after reading the vignette of the depressed client; they also believed the depressed client possessed many undesirable personal attributes. Practicing psychologists are urged to reflect on their attitudes and beliefs so they do not negatively affect assessment and therapy services.

Background. The Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) is widely used to assess cognitive impairment. Although education and race have been shown to affect the validity of the MMSE in detecting dementia, whether race and education influence the validity of the MMSE in gauging severity of dementia is unknown. Methods. Patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other dementias (59 African American, 112 White) were administered the MMSE, and information was gathered on patient functional impairment, including Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), and the Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist (MBPC). Demographic information, including patient and caregiver education, and patient age, was also assessed. Results. African American and White patients did not differ significantly on the MMSE or functional impairment variables, but White patients had higher educational attainment. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that race and education did not predict functional impairment, and MMSE scores were strong predictors of ADL and IADL levels for both African American and White patients. MMSE predicted variability in MBPC scores for White patients only, perhaps related to racial differences in subjective caregiver report of behavioral problems. Conclusions. While race and education may affect the validity of the MMSE in detecting the presence of cognitive impairment, the MMSE can be a useful predictor of degree of ADL and IADL impairment in patients diagnosed with dementia, regardless of race.

Family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) commonly have high levels of psychological distress. Black caregivers often report less depression than White caregivers, but the process underlying this difference is poorly understood. With the use of a stress process model, 123 White and 74 Black family caregivers of patients with AD and other progressive dementias were studied. Black caregivers appraised patient problems as less stressful and reported higher self-efficacy in managing caregiving problems and less depression than did White caregivers. White and Black caregivers also differed significantly in coping responses but not in social supports. Structural equation analyses indicated that the correlational structure of the stress process was similar in White and Black caregivers. Caregiving stressors and race did not affect well-being through direct paths, but they were mediated by effects for appraisal, social support and activity, and coping. Possible cultural mechanisms explaining the better adjustment among Black caregivers are discussed.

Both Black and White caregivers are likely to feel limited in their social activities and believe they lack emotional support from other people outside their homes when they care for a person with dementia. However, White caregivers were more likely to become depressed and to have lower feelings of satisfaction than Black caregivers. The study shows how race may be an important factor in the mental health of caregivers and may be considered when extending support to such people.

Objectives: The objective of this paper was to determine the extent to which dry needling is instructed in entry-level education programs for physical therapists. Methods: Program directors from 226 entry-level education programs recognized by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education were recruited via e-mail to participate in an anonymous 35-item electronic survey during the 2017-2018 academic year. The survey evaluated dry needling curricula, faculty qualifications, attitudes and experience, and programs' future plans for teaching dry needling. Results: A total of 75 programs responded to the survey (response rate = 33.1%). Forty (53.3%) had integrated dry needling theory and psychomotor training into their programs and 8 (10.6%) planned to include such content in their curriculum in the future. Of the 40 respondents, 28 indicated that dry needling education was integrated into a required course, 4 indicated that dry needling was an elective course, and 8 did not specify how dry needling education was integrated. Faculty teaching dry needling appear to be well qualified, with the majority having 5-10 years of experience using dry needling in clinical practice. The primary reason for programs not teaching dry needling is that it was not considered an entry-level skill. Discussion: There appeared to be variability in how dry needling was integrated into the curricula, as well as in the depth and breadth of instruction. Our research may serve as a baseline for faculty to assess existing dry needling curricula and as a guide for developing curricula in new or existing physical therapy programs. This study investigated by interview, the initial syncopal episode of 103 blood/injury-related vasovagal fainters in order to examine two competing hypotheses concerning their origins. Graham (Circulation, 23, 901-906, 1961) postulated that the faint resulted when sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity ceased on termination of a threat, leaving parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activation unopposed. Engel [Fainting (2nd edn), 1962; Annals of Internal Medicine, 89, 901-906, 1978] proposed that when in the face of threat with SNS activation, escape is blocked, the PNS becomes activated as the conservation-withdrawal reponse, leading to syncope. We found cases clearly conforming to each of these formulations as well as some with characteristics of both, and some who fainted in response to blood or injury but with no perception of threat. The Graham and Engel types did not differ in terms of fear or avoidance of blood, injury, or medically-related situations nor did they differ in the frequency with which their parents reported blood/injury-related syncopal episodes. It is proposed that both may be activated by a common psychological mechanism involving cessation of a defensive posture. In contrast, the non-threat fainters showed significantly less medically-related avoidance and had a greater percentage (94%) of parents with positive faint histories.

Microbats perform important ecological services in agro-ecosystems, but several species are globally threatened by loss of roosting and breeding habitats. The successful conservation of bats in agricultural land requires adequate knowledge of their ecology. Using ultrasonic recorders, we studied the activity of insectivorous bats in areas of macadamia production in eastern Australia at two spatial scales: across woodland-orchard transects at the local scale and across three levels of fragmentation at the landscape scale. At the local scale, activity patterns of 'clutter' and 'edge' specialists were consistently higher in woodland patches, gradually decreasing towards isolated orchards, where only a few 'open' specialists were active. At the landscape scale, bat community activity was affected by the level of fragmentation, partly because three of the most recorded taxa ( Austronomus australis, Saccolaimus flaviventris and Miniopterus australis) had their highest activity in less-fragmented areas. A distance-based model explained 24% of the bat community activity based on a combination of six environmental variables. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that a number of bat taxa were associated with open areas of macadamia, whereas other taxa were associated with increasing values of landscape composition, and arthropod and water availability. In addition, total bat activity was highly correlated with foraging rate. These results suggest that most bat taxa were influenced by proximity to woodland and the degree of fragmentation, and only few taxa were able to exploit isolated orchards. Environmental factors that promote bat activity could be exploited to strengthen conservation efforts. Preserving remnant woodland and promoting habitat heterogeneity will benefit several bat species. In particular, the foraging activity of 'edge' specialists could be fostered by increasing landscape connectivity and maintaining unobstructed water bodies near macadamia orchards. Considering that bats forage as they navigate these areas, conservation efforts could also bring benefits to farmers through pest-reduction services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aspergillus flavusinfects several food and feed crops, such as corn (Zea maysL.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.), peanuts (Arachis hypogaeaL.), and tree nut crops and contaminates the seed with carcinogenic aflatoxins. These susceptible crops contain rich reserves of lipids and fatty acids. The nature of relationship between lipids and the ability of the fungus to infect and produce aflatoxins in mature cottonseed, a protein-rich animal feed, has been addressed previously. In this study, we tracked lipid accumulation in developing cottonseed (15–35 days post-anthesis [DPA]) and also the ability of an aflatoxigenic strain and an isogenic non-aflatoxigenic strain to grow and produce aflatoxinsin planta. The aflatoxigenic strain Af-70 green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the isogenic, non-aflatoxigenic strain SRRC 1500 (fungal collections maintained at the Southern Regional Research Center) did not differ much in infection and colonization of cottonseed. The non-aflatoxigenic strain did not produce aflatoxin at all stages of cottonseed development, whereas the aflatoxigenic strain Af-70 GFP produced copious amounts of aflatoxin and it coincided with the increasing levels of lipids, especially in mature cottonseed (30–35 DPA).
