Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are popular tools for generating structured light fields and have fostered numerous applications in optics and photonics. Here, we explore the limits of what fields these devices are capable of generating and detecting in the context of so-called vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). Our main contributions are to quantify (theoretically and experimentally) how the pixelation of the SLM screen affects the quality of the generated vortex mode and to offer useful heuristics on how to optimise the performance of the displayed digital hologram. In so doing, we successfully generate and detect a very high order optical vortex mode with topological charge $\ell = 600$, the highest achieved to date using SLMs. Since the OAM degree of freedom is frequently touted as offering a potentially unbounded state space, we hope that this work will inspire researchers to make more use of higher order vortex modes.

We present a quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on the random outcomes inherent in projective measurements on a superposition of quantum states of light. Firstly, we use multiplexed holograms encoded on a spatial light modulator to spatially map down-converted photons onto a superposition of optical paths. This gives us full digital control of the mapping process which we can tailor to achieve any desired probability distribution. More importantly, we use this method to account for any bias present within our transmission and detection system, forgoing the need for time-consuming and inefficient unbiasing algorithms. Our QRNG achieved a min-entropy of $\text{H}_{\text{min}}=0.9991\pm0.0003$ bits per photon and passed the NIST statistical test suite. Furthermore, we extend our approach to realise a QRNG based on photons entangled in their orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom. This combination of digital holograms and projective measurements on arbitrary OAM combinations allowed us to generate random numbers with arbitrary distributions, in effect tailoring the system's entropy while maintaining the inherent quantum irreproducibility. Optical communication is an integral part of the modern economy, having all but replaced electronic communication systems. Future growth in bandwidth appears to be on the horizon using structured light, encoding information into the spatial modes of light, and transmitting them down fibre and free-space, the latter crucial for addressing last mile and digitally disconnected communities. Unfortunately, patterns of light are easily distorted, and in the case of free-space optical communication, turbulence is a significant barrier. Here we review recent progress in structured light in turbulence, first with a tutorial style summary of the core concepts, before highlighting the present state-of-the-art in the field. We support our review with new experimental studies that reveal which types of structured light are best in turbulence, the behaviour of vector versus scalar light in turbulence, the trade-off of diversity and multiplexing, and how turbulence models can be exploited for enhanced optical signal processing protocols. This comprehensive treatise will be invaluable to the large communities interested in free-space optical communication with spatial modes of light.

High-dimensional entangled states are promising candidates for increasing the security and encoding capacity of quantum systems. While it is possible to witness and set bounds for the entanglement, precisely quantifying the dimensionality and purity in a fast and accurate manner remains an open challenge. Here, we report an approach that simultaneously returns the dimensionality and purity of high-dimensional entangled states by simple projective measurements. We show that the outcome of a conditional measurement returns a visibility that scales monotonically with entanglement dimensionality and purity, allowing for quantitative measurements for general photonic quantum systems. We illustrate our method using transverse spatial modes of photons that carry orbital angular momentum and verify high-dimensional entanglement over a wide range of state purities. Our approach advances the high-dimensional tool box for characterising quantum states by providing a simple and direct dimensionality and purity measure, even for mixed entangled states.

Here, we report a detailed method of growing LaAlGe, a non-magnetic Weyl semimetal, thin film on silicon(100) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy and their structural and electrical characterizations. 50 nm thick LaAlGe films were deposited and annealed for 16 hours in situ at a temperature 793 K. As-grown high-quality films showed uniform surface topography and near ideal stoichiometry with a body-centered tetragonal crystal structure. Temperature-dependent longitudinal resistivity can be understood with dominant interband s-d electron-phonon scattering in the temperature range 5-40 K. Hall measurements confirmed the semimetallic nature of the films with electron dominated charge carrier density near 7.15*10^21 cm^-3 at 5 K., Comment: This article has been published in MRS Communications as a first view article. Spatial filtering is a commonly deployed technique to improve the quality of laser beams by optically filtering the noise. In the "textbook" example, the noise is usually assumed to be high frequency and the laser beam, Gaussian. In this case, the filtering is achieved by a simple pin-hole placed at the common focal plane of two lenses. Here, we explain how to generalize the concept of spatial filtering to arbitrary beam profiles: spatial filtering of structured light. We show how to construct the spatial filters using a range of structured light examples, and highlight under what conditions spatial filtering works. In the process, we address some misconceptions in the community as to how and when spatial filters can be applied, extend the concept of spatial filtering to arbitrary beam types and provide a theoretical and experimental framework for further study at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Laser brightness is crucial in many optical processes, and is optimised by high power, high beam quality (low $M^2$) beams. Here we show how to improve the laser beam quality factor (reducing the $M^2$) of arbitrary structured light fields in a lossless manner using continuous phase-only elements, thus allowing for the increase in brightness by a simple linear optical transformation. We demonstrate the principle with four high $M^2$ initial beams, converting each to a Gaussian ($M^2 \approx 1$) with a dramatic increase in brightness of $>10 \times$. This work puts a new perspective on the old debate of improving laser beam quality with binary diffractive optics, while providing a practical approach to enhancing laser brightness for arbitrary input beams.

It is well-known that electric spin angular momentum and electric orbital angular momentum are conserved under paraxial propagation of travelling waves in free-space. Here we study the electric and magnetic angular momentum in counter-propagating waves and show both theoretically and experimentally that neither component alone is conserved except in special cases. We attribute this non-conservation to spin-spin and orbit-orbit coupling between the electric and magnetic fields. This work generalises previous findings based on travelling waves, explains the apparent spin-orbit coupling in counter-propagating paraxial light, and broadens our understanding of angular momentum conservation in arbitrary structured light waves.

In this work, we propose a predictor/indicator of the self-healing ability of coherent structured light beams: the field's modal content. Specifically, the fidelity between the obstructed and unobstructed beams' modal spectrum serves as a useful measure of the degree to which the beam will likely self-heal after an arbitrary obstacle. Since any optical field can be decomposed in terms of any chosen orthonormal basis, this analysis is, therefore, less restrictive than other methods for determining self-healing ability. Furthermore, since modal content is propagation invariant, this allows beam self-reconstruction to be studied in this way at any convenient transverse plane. As a case study, we present convincing experimental evidence for the superiority of the self-healing properties of Laguerre-Gaussian over Bessel-Gaussian beams; analysis that is facilitated primarily by the proposed measure.

Structured light concerns the control of light in its spatial degrees of freedom (amplitude, phase and polarization), and has proven instrumental in many applications. The creation of structured light usually involves the conversion of a Gaussian mode to a desired structure in a single step, while the detection is often the reverse process, both fundamentally lossy or imperfect. Here we show how to ideally reshape structured light in a lossless manner in a simple two-step process. We outline the core theoretical arguments, and demonstrate reshaping of arbitrary structured light patterns, in the process highlighting when the technique is applicable and when not, and how best to implement it. This work will be a useful addition to the structured light toolkit, and particularly relevant to those wishing to use the spatial modes of light as a basis in classical and quantum communication.

In recent time there has been an increasing amount of interest in developing novel techniques for the generation of complex vector light beams. Amongst these, digital holography stands out as one of the most flexible and versatile with almost unlimited freedom to generate scalar and vector light beams with arbitrary polarisation distributions and spatial transverse profile. Recently, we put forward a novel method to quantify the non-separability of vector modes in which we reported first measurements of a compact and robust device to generate such vector modes that fully exploits the polarisation-independence of Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs). In this manuscript we fully characterise this device and provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of the generated modes. Vectorially structured light has emerged as an enabling tool in many diverse applications, from communication to imaging, exploiting quantum-like correlations courtesy of a non-separable spatially varying polarization structure. Creating these states at the source remains challenging and is presently limited to two-dimensional vectorial states by customized lasers. Here we invoke ray-wave duality in a simple laser cavity to produce polarization marked multi-path modes that are non-separable in three degrees of freedom and in eight dimensions. As a topical example, we use our laser to produce the complete set of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) basis states, mimicking high-dimensional multi-partite entanglement with classical light, which we confirm by a new projection approach. We offer a complete theoretical framework for our laser based on SU(2) symmetry groups, revealing a rich parameter space for further exploitation. Our approach requires only a conventional laser with no special optical elements, is easily scaleable to higher dimensions, and offers a simple but elegant solution for at-the-source creation of classically entangled states of structured light, opening new applications in simulating and enhancing high-dimensional quantum systems.

Stokes polarimetry is widely used to extract the polarisation structure of optical fields, typically from six measurements, although it can be extracted from only four. To measure the required intensities, most approaches are based on optical polarisation components. In this work, we present an all-digital approach that enables a rapid measure of all four intensities without any moving components. Our method employs a Polarisation Grating (PG) to simultaneously project the incoming mode into left- and right-circular polarised states, followed by a polarisation-insensitive Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), which digitally introduces a phase retardance for the acquisition of the remaining two polarisation states. We demonstrate how this technique can be applied to measuring the SoP, vectorness and intra-modal phase of optical fields, without any moving components and shows excellent agreement with theory, illustrating fast, real-time polarimetry.

Theoretical calculations and experimental observations show MoTe2 is a type II Weyl semimetal, along with many members of transition metal dichalcogenides family. We have grown highly crystalline large-area MoTe2 thin films on Si/SiO2 substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Very uniform, continuous, and smooth films were obtained as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses. Measurements of the temperature dependence of longitudinal resistivity and current-voltage characteristics at different temperature are discussed. Unsaturated, positive quadratic magnetoresistance of the as-grown thin films has been observed from 10 K to 200 K. The non-separability between the spatial and polarisation Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) of complex vector light fields has drawn significant attention in recent time. Key to this are its remarkable similarities with quantum entanglement, with quantum-like effects observed at the classical level. Crucially, this parallelism enables the use of quantum tools to quantify the coupling between the spatial and polarisation DoFs, usually implemented with polarisation-dependent spatial light modulators, which requires the splitting of the vector mode into two orthogonal polarisation components. Here we put forward a novel approach that relies on the use of Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs) for fast, cheap and robust measurement, while the polarisation-independent nature of DMDs enables a reduction in the number of required measurements by 25\%. We tested our approach experimentally on cylindrical vector modes with arbitrary degrees of non-separability, of great relevance in a wide variety of applications. The Doppler effect of light was implemented by interference with a reference wave to infer linear velocities in early manifestations, and more recently lateral and angular velocities with scalar phase structured light. A consequence of the scalar wave approach is that it is impossible to deduce the motion direction and position of moving targets directly. Here we overcome this limitation with vectorially structured light, exhibiting spatially variant polarization, allowing both the position and velocity of a particle to be robustly determined by a new vectorial Doppler effect. We use this to successfully implement real time monitoring of instantaneous angular position and velocity of a complicated moving particle, and interpret its physical mechanism as evidence of time reversal symmetry breaking in classically entangled light fields. Our demonstration can easily be extended with arbitrary vector structured fields for complete motion tracking of nontrivial trajectories, offering new vectorial Doppler metrology for universal motion vectors., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures

Much scientific work has focused on the generation of random numbers as well as the distribution of said random numbers for use as a cryptographic key. However, emphasis is often placed on one of the two to the exclusion of the other, but both are often simultaneously important. Here we present a simple hybrid free-space link scheme for both the generation and secure distribution of (pseudo-)random numbers between two remote parties, drawing the randomness from the stochastic nature of atmospheric turbulence. The atmosphere is simulated using digital micro-mirror devices for efficient, all-digital control. After outlining one potential algorithm for extracting random numbers based on finding the centre-of-mass (COM) of turbulent beam intensity profiles, the statistics of our experimental COM measurements is studied and found to agree well with the literature. After implementing the scheme in the laboratory, Alice and Bob are able to establish a string of correlated random bits with an 84% fidelity. Finally, we make a simple modification to the original setup in an attempt to thwart the hacking attempts of an eavesdropper, Eve, who has access to the free-space portion of the link. We find that the fidelity between Eve's key and that of Alice/Bob is 54%, only slightly above the theoretical minimum. Stokes polarimetry (SP) is a powerful technique that enables spatial reconstruction of the state of polarization (SoP) of a light beam using only intensity measurements. A given SoP is reconstructed from a set of four Stokes parameters, which are computed through four intensity measurements. Since all intensities must be performed on the same beam, it is common to record each intensity individually, one after the other, limiting its performance to light beams with static SoP. Here, we put forward a novel technique to extend SP to a broader set of light beams with dynamic SoP. This technique relies on the superposition principle, which enables the splitting of the input beam into identical copies, allowing the simultaneous measurement of all intensities. For this, the input beam is passed through a multiplexed digital hologram displayed on a polarization-insensitive Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) that grants independent and rapid (20 kHz) manipulation of each beam. We are able to reliably reconstruct the SoP with high fidelity and at speeds of up to 27 Hz, paving the way for real-time polarimetry of structured light, Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Secret sharing is the art of securely sharing information between more than two people in such a way that its reconstruction requires the collaboration of a certain number of parties. Entanglement-based secret sharing schemes which utilise multi-particle entanglement are limited by their scalability. Recently, a high-dimensional single photon secret sharing protocol was proposed which has impressive advantages in scalability. However, the experimental realisation of this protocol remains elusive. Here, by taking advantage of the high-dimensional Hilbert space for orbital angular momentum and using Perfect Vortex beams as their carriers, we present a proof-of-principle implementation of a high-dimensional single photon quantum secret sharing scheme. We experimentally implemented this scheme for 10 participants in $d=11$ dimensions and show how it can be easily scaled to higher dimensions and any number of participants.

Secret sharing allows three or more parties to share secret information which can only be decrypted through collaboration. It complements quantum key distribution as a valuable resource for securely distributing information. Here we take advantage of hybrid spin and orbital angular momentum states to access a high dimensional encoding space, demonstrating a protocol that is easily scalable in both dimension and participants. To illustrate the versatility of our approach, we first demonstrate the protocol in two dimensions, extending the number of participants to ten, and then demonstrate the protocol in three dimensions with three participants, the highest realisation of participants and dimensions thus far. We reconstruct secrets depicted as images with a fidelity of up to 0.979. Moreover, our scheme exploits the use of conventional linear optics to emulate the quantum gates needed for transitions between basis modes on a high dimensional Hilbert space with the potential of up to 1.225 bits of encoding capacity per transmitted photon. Perfect (optical) vortex (PV) beams are fields which are mooted to be independent of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) they carry. To date, the best experimental approximation of these modes is obtained from passing Bessel-Gaussian beams through a Fourier lens. However, the OAM-dependent width of these quasi-PVs is not precisely known and is often understated. We address this here by deriving and experimentally confirming an explicit analytic expression for the second moment width of quasi-PVs. We show that the width scales in proportion to $\sqrt{\ell}$ in the best case, the same as most "regular" vortex modes albeit with a much smaller proportionality constant. Our work will be of interest to the large community who seek to use such structured light fields in various applications, including optical trapping, tweezing and communications.

One of the major challenges for long range, high speed Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication is turbulence induced beam wander. Beam wander causes fluctuations in the received intensity as well as crosstalk in mode division multiplexed systems. Existing models for beam wander make use of probability distributions and long term averages and are not able to accurately model time-dependent intensity fluctuations such as deep fading, where the received intensity is too low to maintain reliable communication for an extended period of time. In this work we present an elegant new memory model which models the behaviour of beam wander induced intensity fluctuations with the unique capability to accurately simulate deep fading. This is invaluable for the development of optimised error correction coding and digital signal processing in order to improve the throughput and reliability of FSO systems.

Control of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in optical fields has seen tremendous growth of late, with a myriad of tools existing for their creation and detection. What has been lacking is the ability to arbitrarily modify the OAM spectrum of a superposition in amplitude and phase, especially if a priori knowledge of the initial OAM spectrum is absent. Motivated by a quasi-mapping that exists between the position and OAM of Laguerre-Gaussian modes, we propose an approach for single-step modulation of a field's OAM spectrum. We outline the concept and implement it through the use of binary ring apertures encoded on spatial light modulators. We show that complete control of the OAM spectrum is achievable in a single step, fostering applications in classical and quantum information processing that utilise the OAM basis.

Imaging in quantum optics (QO) is usually formulated in the languages of quantum mechanics and Fourier optics. While relatively advanced fields, notions such as different reference frames and the degradation of entanglement due to acceleration do not usually feature. Here we propose the idea of using so-called Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detectors to model the imaging process in QO. In particular, we first present a quantum field theory version of a state describing Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC), one of the principal processes employed to create entangled photons in the laboratory. This state, coupled to UDW detectors, is used to investigate a single-pixel ghost image under both inertial and non-inertial settings, and a two-pixel image under inertial conditions. The reconstructed images obtained for various possible inputs can be distinguished better than a pure guess, hence the formalism can be used to describe imaging between non-inertial frames. We briefly consider the origin of the correlations between the UDW detectors, which don't appear to arise from the usual notion of entanglement. Finally, we find that the contrast between the possible outcomes in the single-pixel case follows a curious coupling time dependent behaviour., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The global quantum network requires the distribution of entangled states over long distances, with significant advances already demonstrated using entangled polarisation states, reaching approximately 1200 km in free space and 100 km in optical fibre. Packing more information into each photon requires Hilbert spaces with higher dimensionality, for example, that of spatial modes of light. However spatial mode entanglement transport requires custom multimode fibre and is limited by decoherence induced mode coupling. Here we transport multi-dimensional entangled states down conventional single-mode fibre (SMF). We achieve this by entangling the spin-orbit degrees of freedom of a bi-photon pair, passing the polarisation (spin) photon down the SMF while accessing multi-dimensional orbital angular momentum (orbital) subspaces with the other. We show high fidelity hybrid entanglement preservation down 250 m of SMF across multiple 2x2 dimensions, demonstrating quantum key distribution protocols, quantum state tomographies and quantum erasers. This work offers an alternative approach to spatial mode entanglement transport that facilitates deployment in legacy networks across conventional fibre.

Traditional ghost imaging experiments exploit position correlations between correlated states of light. These correlations occur directly in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), and in such a scenario, the two-photon state used for ghost imaging is symmetric. Here we perform ghost imaging using an anti-symmetric state, engineering the two-photon state symmetry by means of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. We use both symmetric and anti-symmetric states and show that the ghost imaging setup configuration results in object-image rotations depending on the state selected. Further, the object and imaging arms employ spatial light modulators for the all-digital control of the projections, being able to dynamically change the measuring technique and the spatial properties of the states under study. Complex vectorial light fields, non-separable in their polarization and spatial degree of freedom, are of relevance in a wide variety of fields encompassing microscopy, metrology, communication and topological studies. Controversially, they have been suggested as analogues to quantum entanglement, raising fundamental questions on the relation between non-separability in classical systems, and entanglement in quantum systems. Here we propose and demonstrate basis-independent tomography of arbitrary vectorial light fields by relating their concurrence to spatially resolved Stokes projections. We generate vector fields with controllable non-separability using a novel compact interferometer that incorporates a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), thus offering a holistic toolbox for the generation and quantitative analysis of arbitrary vectorial light fields.

Perfect (optical) vortices (PVs) have the mooted ability to encode orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto the field within a well-defined annular ring. Although this makes the near-field radial profile independent of OAM, the far-field radial profile nevertheless scales with OAM, forming a Bessel structure. A consequence of this is that quantitative measurement of PVs by modal decomposition has been thought to be unviable. Here, we show that the OAM content of a PV can be measured quantitatively, including superpositions of OAM within one perfect vortex. We outline the theory and confirm it by experiment with holograms written to spatial light modulators, highlighting the care required for accurate decomposition of the OAM content. Our work will be of interest to the large community who seek to use such structured light fields in various applications, including optical trapping and tweezing, and optical communication.

The wavefront measurement of a light beam is a complex task, which often requires a series of spatially resolved intensity measurements. For instance, a detector array may be used to measure the local phase gradient in the transverse plane of the unknown laser beam. In most cases the resolution of the reconstructed wavefront is determined by the resolution of the detector, which in the infrared case is severely limited. Here we employ a Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) and a single-pixel detector (i.e. with no spatial resolution) to demonstrate the reconstruction of unknown wavefronts with excellent resolution. Our approach exploits modal decomposition of the incoming field by the DMD, enabling wavefront measurements at 4~kHz of both visible and infrared laser beams.

Vast geographical distances in Africa are a leading cause for the so-called "digital divide" due to the high cost of installing fibre. Free-Space Optical (FSO) communications offer a convenient and higher bandwidth alternative to point-to-point radio microwave links, with the possibility of re-purposing existing infrastructure. Unfortunately, the range of high bandwidth FSO remains limited. While there has been extensive research into an optimal mode set for FSO to achieve maximum data throughput by mode division multiplexing, there has been relatively little work investigating optical modes to improve the resilience of FSO links. Here we experimentally show that a carefully chosen subset of Hermite-Gaussian modes is more resilient to atmospheric turbulence than similar Laguerre-Gauss beams, theoretically resulting in a 167% theoretical increase of propagation distance at a mode dependent loss of 50%.

Structured light has been created by a myriad of near- and far-field techniques and has found both classical and quantum applications. In the case of orbital angular momentum (OAM), continuous spiral phase patterns in dynamic or geometric phase are often employed with the phase patterns existing across the entire transverse plane. Here we exploit the uncertainty relation between OAM and angle to create structured OAM fields using multilevel OAM holograms. We show theoretically and experimentally that only a multilevel angular phase contour in the near-field is needed to create structured OAM light in the far-field, exploiting the reciprocal nature of angular momentum and angle. We use this approach to demonstrate exotic 3D structured light control to show the evolution of the Poynting vector in such fields and to highlight the physics underlying this phenomenon., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 2 animations

The efficient creation and detection of spatial modes of light has become topical of late, driven by the need to increase photon-bit-rates in classical and quantum communications. Such mode creation/detection is traditionally achieved with tools based on linear optics. Here we put forward a new spatial mode detection technique based on the nonlinear optical process of sum-frequency generation. We outline the concept theoretically and demonstrate it experimentally with intense laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum and Hermite-Gaussian modes. Finally, we show that the method can be used to transfer an image from the infrared band to the visible, which implies the efficient conversion of many spatial modes., Comment: Published version, 4 pages, 5 figures

In a Quantum Walk (QW) the "walker" follows all possible paths at once through the principle of quantum superposition, differentiating itself from classical random walks where one random path is taken at a time. This facilitates the searching of problem solution spaces faster than with classical random walks, and holds promise for advances in dynamical quantum simulation, biological process modelling and quantum computation. Current efforts to implement QWs have been hindered by the complexity of handling single photons and the inscalability of cascading approaches. Here we employ a versatile and scalable resonator configuration to realise quantum walks with bright classical light. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility of our approach by implementing a variety of QWs, all with the same experimental platform, while the use of a resonator allows for an arbitrary number of steps without scaling the number of optics. Our approach paves the way for practical QWs with bright classical light and explicitly makes clear that quantum walks with a single walker do not require quantum states of light.

Ghost imaging is the remarkable process where an image can be formed from photons that have not "seen" the object. Traditionally this phenomenon has required initially correlated but spatially separated photons, e.g., one to interact with the object and the other to form the image, and has been observed in many physical situations, spanning both the quantum and classical regimes. To date, all instances of ghost imaging record an image with the same contrast as the object, i.e., where the object is bright, the image is also bright, and vice versa. Here we observe ghost imaging in a new system - a system based on photons that have never interacted. We utilise entanglement swapping between independent pairs of spatially entangled photons to establish position correlations between two initially independent photons. As a consequence of an anti-symmetric projection in the entanglement swapping process, the recorded image is the contrast reversed version of the object, i.e., where the object is bright, the image is dark, and vice versa. The results highlight the importance of state projection in this ghost imaging process and provides a pathway to teleporting images across a quantum network.

Fractals, complex shapes with structure at multiple scales, have long been observed in Nature: as symmetric fractals in plants and sea shells, and as statistical fractals in clouds, mountains and coastlines. With their highly polished spherical mirrors, laser resonators are almost the precise opposite of Nature, and so it came as a surprise when, in 1998, transverse intensity cross-sections of the eigenmodes of unstable canonical resonators were predicted to be fractals [Karman et al., Nature 402, 138 (1999)]. Experimental verification has so far remained elusive. Here we observe a variety of fractal shapes in transverse intensity cross-sections through the lowest-loss eigenmodes of unstable canonical laser resonators, thereby demonstrating the controlled generation of fractal light inside a laser cavity. We also advance the existing theory of fractal laser modes, first by predicting 3D self-similar fractal structure around the centre of the magnified self-conjugate plane, second by showing, quantitatively, that intensity cross-sections are most self-similar in the magnified self-conjugate plane. Light beams with an azimuthal phase dependency of $e^{i\ell\phi}$ have helical phase fronts and thus carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), a strictly conserved quantity with propagation. Here, we engineer quasi three-dimensional (3D) structured light fields and demonstrate unusual scenarios in which OAM can vary locally in both sign and magnitude along the beam's axis, in a controlled manner, under free-space propagation. To reveal the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon, we perform full modal decomposition and reconstruction of the generated beams to describe the evolution of their intrinsic OAM and topological charge with propagation. We show that topological transition and the associated variation in local OAM rely on the creation, movement, and annihilation of local vortex charges without disturbing the global net charge of the beam, thus conserving the global OAM while varying it locally. Our results may be perceived as an experimental demonstration of the Hilbert Hotel paradox, while advancing our understanding of topological deformations in general.

Using spatial modes for quantum key distribution (QKD) has become highly topical due to their infinite dimensionality, promising high information capacity per photon. However, spatial distortions reduce the feasible secret key rates and compromise the security of a quantum channel. In an extreme form such a distortion might be a physical obstacle, impeding line-of-sight for free-space channels. Here, by controlling the radial degree of freedom of a photon's spatial mode, we are able to demonstrate hybrid high-dimensional QKD through obstacles with self-reconstructing single photons. We construct high-dimensional mutually unbiased bases using spin-orbit hybrid states that are radially modulated with a non-diffracting Bessel-Gaussian (BG) profile, and show secure transmission through partially obstructed quantum links. Using a prepare-measure protocol we report higher quantum state self-reconstruction and information retention for the non-diffracting BG modes as compared to Laguerre-Gaussian modes, obtaining a quantum bit error rate (QBER) that is up to 3 times lower. One of the most captivating properties of diffraction-free optical fields is their ability to reconstruct upon propagation in the presence of an obstacle both, classically and in the quantum regime. Here we demonstrate that the local entanglement, or non-separability, between the spatial and polarisation degrees of freedom also experience self-healing. We measured and quantified the degree of non-separability between the two degrees of freedom when propagating behind various obstructions, which were generated digitally. Experimental results show that even though the degree of non-separability reduces after the obstruction, it recovers to its maximum value within the classical self-healing distance. To confirm our findings, we performed a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell-like inequality measurement, proving the self-reconstruction of non-separability. Accelerating electrons are known to radiate electromagnetic waves, a property that is central to the concept of many devices, from antennas to synchrotrons. While the electrodynamics of accelerating charged particles is well understood, the same is not true for charged matter waves: would a locally accelerating charged matter wave, like its particle counterpart, radiate? Here we construct a novel class of matter waves, angular accelerating electron waves, by superpositions of twisted electrons carrying orbital angular momentum. We study the electrodynamic behaviour of such accelerating matter waves and reveal the generation of a solenoidal magnetic field in each component, and an accelerating electron wave that does not radiate. These novel properties will have practical impact in spin flipping of qubits for quantum information processing, have been suggested for control of time dilation and length contraction, and raise fundamental questions as to the nature of wave-particle duality in the context of radiating charged matter.

Free-space communication links are severely affected by atmospheric turbulence, which causes degradation in the transmitted signal. One of the most common solutions to overcome this is to exploit diversity. In this approach, information is sent in parallel using two or more transmitters that are spatially separated, with each beam therefore experiencing different atmospheric turbulence, lowering the probability of a receive error. In this work we propose and experimentally demonstrate a generalization of diversity based on spatial modes of light, which we have termed $\textit{modal diversity}$. We remove the need for a physical separation of the transmitters by exploiting the fact that spatial modes of light experience different perturbations, even when travelling along the same path. For this proof-of-principle we selected modes from the Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian basis sets and demonstrate an improvement in Bit Error Rate by up to 54\%. We outline that modal diversity enables physically compact and longer distance free space optical links without increasing the total transmit power.

Creating high-quality vector vortex (VV) beams is possible with a myriad of techniques at low power, and while a few studies have produced such beams at high-power, none have considered the impact of amplification on the vector purity. Here we employ novel tools to study the amplification of VV beams, and in particular the purity of such modes. We outline a general toolbox for such investigations and demonstrate its use in the general case of VV beams through a birefringent gain medium. Intriguingly, we show that it is possible to enhance the purity of such beams during amplification, paving the way for high-brightness VV beams, a requirement for their use in high-power applications such as laser materials processing.

Exploiting photonic high-dimensional entanglement allows one to expand the bandwidth of quantum communication and information processing protocols through increased photon information capacity. However, the characterization of entanglement in higher dimensions is experimentally challenging because the number of measurements required scales unfavourably with dimension. While bounds can be used to certify high-dimensional entanglement, they do not quantify the degree to which quantum states are entangled. Here, we propose a quantitative measure that is both an entanglement measure and a dimension witness, which we coin the P-concurrence. We derive this measure by requiring entanglement to extend to qubit subspaces that constitute the high-dimensional state. The computation of the P-concurrence is not contingent on reconstructing the full density matrix, and requires less measurements compared to standard quantum state tomography by orders of magnitude. This allows for faster and more efficient characterization of high-dimensional quantum states.
