- Abstract
Architectural anomalies, also known as architectural smells, represent the violation of design principles or decisions that impact internal software qualities with significant negative effects on maintenance, evolution costs and technical debt. Architectural smells, if early removed, have an overall impact on reducing a possible progressive architectural erosion and architectural debt. Some tools have been proposed for their detection, exploiting different methods, usually based only on static analysis. This work analyzes how dynamic analysis can be exploited to detect architectural smells. We focus on two smells, Hub-Like Dependency and Cyclic Dependency, and we extend an existing tool integrating dynamic analysis. We conduct an empirical study on ten projects. We compare the results obtained comparing a method featuring dynamic analysis and the original version of Arcan based only on static analysis to understand if dynamic analysis can be successfully used. The results show that dynamic analysis helps identify missing architectural smells instances, although its usage is hindered by the lack of test suites suitable for this scope.

- Abstract
During the development phase, software programmers usually introduce code that contains issues intentionally left for additional treatment. To allow for future fixing, they mark such code using textual comments, resulting in Self-Admitted Technical Debt (SATD). Detecting SATD contained in source code has become crucial in the development cycle since it helps program-mers locate issues that need to be solved, thus improving code quality. We introduce PILOT, a technical debt detector built on top of a combination of different natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) techniques. First, the semantic among SATD comments is captured using feature extraction steps. Then, neural network algorithms are applied to classify comments, represented as vectors. We built a PILOT prototype with a feed-forward neural network and evaluated it using real-world datasets as proof of concept. The empirical evaluation shows that PILOT obtains an encouraging performance and outperforms a well-established baseline. We anticipate that our tool will come in handy, as once being embedded in the IDE, it can help developers recognize SATD manifested in their code, allowing them to conveniently identify and fix issues.

Patients with COVID-19 may experience multiple conditions (e.g., fever, hyperventilation, anorexia, gastroenteritis, acid-base disorder) that may cause electrolyte imbalances. Hypokalemia is a concerning electrolyte disorder that may increase the susceptibility to various kinds of arrhythmia. This study aimed to estimate prevalence, risk factors and outcome of hypokalemia in a cohort of non-critically ill patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 290 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection at the tertiary teaching hospital of Modena, Italy.Hypokalemia (Hypokalemia is a frequent disorder in COVID-19 patients and urinary potassium loss may be the main cause of hypokalemia. The disorder was mild in the majority of the patients and was unrelated to poor outcomes. Nevertheless, hypokalemic patients required potassium supplements to dampen the risk of arrhythmias.

- Abstract
Self-adaptive systems dynamically change their structure and behavior in response to changes in their execution environment to ensure the quality of the services they provide. Self-adaptive systems are usually built of a managed part, which implements their functionality, and a managing part, which implements the self-adaptive mechanisms. Hence, the complexity of self-adaptive systems results also from the existence of the managing part and the interaction between the managed and the managing parts. The available evaluation approaches of self-adaptive systems focus on their performances, i.e., on the benefits (e.g., degree of autonomy, support for detecting anomalous behavior, adaptivity time, quality of response) achieved through the self-adaptive mechanisms of the managing part. In this paper, we evaluate the quality of the design of self-adaptive systems (including the managed and the managing parts) as it is done in traditional software engineering. We are interested in the internal software quality of self-adaptive systems, as the existence of the managing part and its interaction with the managed part leads to a tightly coupled system. We analyze the self-adaptive systems through the detection of different issues such as architectural and code smells and the detection of design patterns. The smells provide some hints on possible design and implementation problems, and help software engineers to improve the quality of the systems. While, design patterns are usually indicators of the application of good practices in the software development and allow to capture part of the design rationale. In this way, they can help software engineers to understand, reuse, and extend self-adaptive systems. In this paper, we have considered the detection of 3 architectural smells, 18 code smells, and 15 design patterns in 11 self-adaptive systems written in the Java programming language. The results indicate that the 3 architectural smells, 9 out of the 18 code smells, and the 1

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: We assessed patients and tumor characteristics, as well as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) items, associated with curative intent treatment decision-making in clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) patients. METHODS: Clinically localized PCa treated with either radical prostatectomy (RP) or radiation therapy (RT) within 12 months from diagnosis were abstracted from The PROState cancer monitoring in ITaly, from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR) database. Multivariable logistic regression (MLR) models predicting RT vs. RP were fitted, after adjustment for HRQoL items, patients and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Of 1041 patients, 631 (60.2%) were treated with RP and 410 (39.8%) with RT. Relative to RT, RP patients were younger age (mean age 64.5±6.6 vs. 71.4±4.9, P<0.001) and had higher rates of D’Amico low-intermediate risk groups (31.8 vs. 21.9% low, 46.3% vs. 43.5% intermediate and 21.9% vs. 34.6% high risk, P<0.001). Overall, 93.2% of RP patients were enrolled by urologists and 82.7% of RT patients by radiation oncologists. RP patients had generally higher means values of HRQoL items. In MLR models, higher RT rates were independently associated with more advanced age (odds ratio [OR] 6.14, P<0.001) and BMI≥30 kg/m2 (OR 1.78, P<0.001). Conversely, lower rates of RT were independently associated with married (OR 0.55, P=0.01) and worker status (OR 0.52, P=0.004), enrollment in academic centers (OR 0.59, P=0.005) and higher physical composite score (OR 0.88, P=0.03) and baseline sexual function items (OR 0.92, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Most patients with clinically localized prostate cancer undergoing definitive treatment at Italian institutions receive RP instead of RT. Moreover, those who are younger, married, working, as well as those with better physical and sexual function are more likely to undergo surgery.

- Abstract
Technical debt indexes are metrics for assessing the quality of a software system. Both academic and commercial tools have begun to provide computations of such indexes based on design violations and smells (e.g., cycles among system elements). When computing a debt index for a given project, a common use case is that engineers look at the index values for spotting design issues that negatively affect system evolution and quality. In this context, those smells being critical for the system architecture should be promptly identified soastoe valuate proper remediation actions. However, the interpretation of an index value in terms of problematic smells is usually a manual and labor-intensive task for engineers. To help with this task, we propose a tool called Sen4Smells that performs an automated sensitivity analysis for a given debt index based on the evolution of both the index values and the corresponding smells across (past) system versions. The Sen4Smells output is a ranking of smells that, due to their variations or instability, are major contributors to the debt index, and thus, can impact on architecture quality. Sen4Smells is designed as a pipeline that combines information from existing tools for smell detection, predefined d ebt i ndex f ormulas, and the Sobol method for sensitivity analysis. As a demonstration of the tool functionality, we briefly present implementations for the Arcan and Sonargraph tools with their respective debt indexes.

Background There are several treatments available to newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCA) patients. Although surgery and radiotherapy (RT) with or without androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are widely adopted treatment options for localized PCA together with active surveillance (AS), there is no consensus nor randomised trials on treatment selection, prospective quality of life (QOL), along with toxicity outcomes and according to treatment modality in the Italian population. The current study aimed to describe clinical-therapeutic features and QOL at PCA diagnosis, according to different treatment patterns in a large prospective, Italian population, enrolled in the Pros-IT CNR study. Methods The Pros-IT CNR is an on-going national, multicenter, observational, prospective study on patients affected by PCA who have been referred by 97 Italian Urology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology facilities participating in the project. The possible relationships between the treatment patterns reported in the 6 month follow-up case report form and patients' features at diagnosis were evaluated using exploratory multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and other data analysis method. Results At diagnosis, surgery and AS patients were significantly younger, had fewer comorbidities, lower PSA levels and Gleason Score (GS) values; they were also diagnosed at an earlier stage of disease with respect to the RT or ADT patients who showed significantly worse QoL scores at the time of diagnosis. Conclusions An analysis of the data collected at baseline and 6 months later uncovered substantial differences in ages, comorbidities, clinical and QOL features in the various treatment groups. These findings do not fully reflect the current PCA treatment guidelines and suggest the need for a multidisciplinary consensus guideline to ameliorate both the counselling and treatments of PCA patients.

Background: Software companies need to manage and refactor Technical Debt issues. Therefore, it is necessary to understand if and when refactoring of Technical Debt should be prioritized with respect to developing features or fixing bugs. Objective: The goal of this study is to investigate the existing body of knowledge in software engineering to understand what Technical Debt prioritization approaches have been proposed in research and industry. Method: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review of 557 unique papers published until 2020, following a consolidated methodology applied in software engineering. We included 44 primary studies. Results: Different approaches have been proposed for Technical Debt prioritization, all having different goals and proposing optimization regarding different criteria. The proposed measures capture only a small part of the plethora of factors used to prioritize Technical Debt qualitatively in practice. We present an impact map of such factors. However, there is a lack of empirical and validated set of tools. Conclusion: We observed that Technical Debt prioritization research is preliminary and there is no consensus on what the important factors are and how to measure them. Consequently, we cannot consider current research conclusive. In this paper, we therefore outline different directions for necessary future investigations.

Aims Recently, the cardiovascular outcomes for people using anticoagulation strategies (COMPASS) trial demonstrated that dual therapy reduced cardiovascular outcomes compared with aspirin alone in patients with stable atherosclerotic disease. Methods and results We sought to assess the proportion of patients eligible for the COMPASS trial and to compare the epidemiology and outcome of these patients with those without COMPASS inclusion or with any exclusion criteria in a contemporary, nationwide cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease. Among the 4068 patients with detailed information allowing evaluation of eligibility, 1416 (34.8%) did not fulfil the inclusion criteria (COMPASS-Not-Included), 841 (20.7%) had exclusion criteria (COMPASS-Excluded), and the remaining 1811 (44.5%) were classified as COMPASS-Like. At 1 year, the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE), a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, was 0.9% in the COMPASS-Not-Included and 2.0% in the COMPASS-Like (P = 0.01), and 5.0% in the COMPASS-Excluded group (P Conclusion In a contemporary real-world cohort registry of stable coronary artery disease, most patients resulted as eligible for the COMPASS. These patients presented a considerable annual risk of MACE that consistently increases in the presence of multiple risk factors.

During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 30 to 16.5 ka ago), the Great Adriatic-Po Region (GAPR) was deeply affected by the spread of glaciers from the Alps to the southern foreland and by the dropping of the sea level to ~ -120 m amsl. The combination of these two events triggered the aggradation of the Great Po Plain (GPP), a vast flat area between the Alpine chain, the Italian Peninsula and the north-western Balkan Peninsula, physically and ecologically featured through a range of palaeogeographic and palaeoecological conditions. The low-elevated Prealpine sectors and the Alpine foothills supported more extensive forest stands, due to increased orographic rainfall. These were open boreal forests which persisted throughout the LGM, while open woodlands, steppes, semideserts and wetlands occupied the lowlands. A complex ecogradient, including both an Alpine and a continental timberline, is documented by the fossil records at the NE Alpine border, with a larch-pine forest-steppe belt, in contact with steppes and loess areas extending in the plain, on the dry extreme of the gradient. Still, edaphic wetlands occupied the waterlogged silty soils in the lowlands. Other areas, marked by active geodynamic processes, supported semideserts, i.e. grooves of xerophytic herbs and shrubs. Enhanced aridity and the development of deflation areas, prompted the accretion of loess cover at the northern and southern margins of the GPP. Fauna recorded the gradual disappearance of mammoth, woolly rhino and giant deer, together with cave bear. Gravettian and Epigravettian hunter-gatherer groups inhabited the GPP, although their presence and settlement dynamics at the margins and across this region has long been questioned. As a matter of fact, a handful of archaeological sites composes a patchy record of the peopling of the plain itself. At the northern rim of the GAPR, characterized by a well-developed karst region, several caves and rock shelters record the presence of hunters of bisons and horses at the margins of the GPP and ibexes and cave bears in some hilly landscapes. Nonetheless, evidence of contacts across this area is provided by the exploitation of chert sources and by stylistic and technical similarities in the lithic industries. The work resumes the currently available multidisciplinary data and adds new petroarchaeological evidence for reconstructing the settlement dynamics of the Gravettian - Epigravettian hunter-gatherers in this vast region up to the early Late Glacial, when the Prealpine and the Apennine foothills, along with the Dinarids, were persistently settled.

- Abstract
The possible relationships between the treatment patterns reported in the 6 month follow-up case report form and patients’ features at diagnosis were evaluated using exploratory multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and other data analysis method.

- Abstract
Background: To report health-related quality of life outcomes as assessed by validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after radical prostatectomy (RP).-Methods: This study analyzed patients treated with RP within The PROState cancer monitoring in Italy, from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR). Italian versions of Short-Form Heath Survey and university of California los Angeles-prostate cancer index questionnaires were administered. PROMs were physical composite scores, mental composite scores and urinary, bowel, sexual functions and bothers (UF/B, BF/B, SF/B). Baseline unbalances were controlled with propensity scores and stabilized inverse weights; differences in PROMs between different RP approaches were estimated by mixed models. Results: Of 541 patients treated with RP, 115 (21%) received open RP (ORP), 90 (17%) laparoscopic RP (LRP) and 336 (61%) robot-assisted RP (RARP). At head-to-head-comparisons, RARP showed higher 12-month UF vs. LRP (interaction treatment ∗ time p = 0.03) and 6-month SF vs. ORP (p < 0.001). At 12-month from surgery, 67, 73 and 79% of patients used no pad for urinary loss in ORP, LRP and RARP respectively (no differences for each comparison). Conversely, 16, 27 and 40% of patients declared erections firm enough for sexual intercourse in ORP, LRP and RARP respectively (only significant difference for ORP vs. RARP, p = 0.0004). Conclusions: Different RP approaches lead to significant variations in urinary and sexual PROMs, with a general trend in favour of RARP. However, their clinical significance seems limited.

- Abstract
Background. Architectural smells and code smells are symptoms of bad code or design that can cause different quality problems, such as faults, technical debt, or difficulties with maintenance and evolution. Some studies show that code smells and architectural smells often appear together in the same file. The correlation between code smells and architectural smells, however, is not clear yet; some studies on a limited set of projects have claimed that architectural smells can be derived from code smells, while other studies claim the opposite. Objective. The goal of this work is to understand whether architectural smells are independent from code smells or can be derived from a code smell or from one category of them. Method. We conducted a case study analyzing the correlations among 19 code smells, six categories of code smells, and four architectural smells. Results. The results show that architectural smells are correlated with code smells only in a very low number of occurrences and therefore cannot be derived from code smells. Conclusion. Architectural smells are independent from code smells, and therefore deserve special attention by researchers, who should investigate their actual harmfulness, and practitioners, who should consider whether and when to remove them.

- Abstract
Architectural smells may substantially increase maintenance effort and thus require extra attention for potential refactoring. While we currently understand this concept and have identified different types of such smells, we have not yet studied their evolution in depth. This is necessary to inform their prioritisation and refactoring. This study analyses the evolution of individual architectural smell instances over time, and the characteristics that define these instances. Three different types of architectural smells are taken into consideration and mined from a total of 524 versions across 14 different projects. The results show how different smell types differ in multiple aspects, such as their growth rate, the importance of the affected elements over time in the dependency network of the system, and the time each instance affects the system. They also cast valuable insights on what aspects are the most important to consider during prioritisation and refactoring activities.

- Abstract
Background: Among asymptomatic patients with severe carotid artery stenosis but no recent stroke or transient cerebral ischaemia, either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can restore patency and reduce long-term stroke risks. However, from recent national registry data, each option causes about 1% procedural risk of disabling stroke or death. Comparison of their long-term protective effects requires large-scale randomised evidence. Methods: ACST-2 is an international multicentre randomised trial of CAS versus CEA among asymptomatic patients with severe stenosis thought to require intervention, interpreted with all other relevant trials. Patients were eligible if they had severe unilateral or bilateral carotid artery stenosis and both doctor and patient agreed that a carotid procedure should be undertaken, but they were substantially uncertain which one to choose. Patients were randomly allocated to CAS or CEA and followed up at 1 month and then annually, for a mean 5 years. Procedural events were those within 30 days of the intervention. Intention-to-treat analyses are provided. Analyses including procedural hazards use tabular methods. Analyses and meta-analyses of non-procedural strokes use Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN21144362. Findings: Between Jan 15, 2008, and Dec 31, 2020, 3625 patients in 130 centres were randomly allocated, 1811 to CAS and 1814 to CEA, with good compliance, good medical therapy and a mean 5 years of follow-up. Overall, 1% had disabling stroke or death procedurally (15 allocated to CAS and 18 to CEA) and 2% had non-disabling procedural stroke (48 allocated to CAS and 29 to CEA). Kaplan-Meier estimates of 5-year non-procedural stroke were 2·5% in each group for fatal or disabling stroke, and 5·3% with CAS versus 4·5% with CEA for any stroke (rate ratio [RR] 1·16, 95% CI 0·86–1·57; p=0·33). Combining RRs for any non-procedural stroke in all CAS versus CEA

- Abstract
Design patterns are recommended solutions for typical software design problems, with an extensively studied and documented impact on various quality factors. Flaws in design at a higher levels of abstraction are manifested in architectural smells. Some of those smells, similarly to code smells, can reduce the expected advantages of design patterns or even prevent their proper implementation. In this paper we study if and how design patterns and architectural smells are related, and how this knowledge could be exploited in practice. We present an empirical study with an analysis of 16 design patterns and 3 architectural smells in 60 open source Java systems. We analyze their diffuseness and correlation, and we extract association rules that describe their presence and dependencies. We demonstrate that there exist relationships between architectural smells and design patterns, both at the class and package levels. Some smells appear falsely positive, as they result from conscious decisions made by programmers, while the application of some patterns can be a cause of certain smells. Our results provide evidence that design patterns and architectural smells are related and affect each other. With knowledge about the relationships, programmers can avoid the side effects of applying some design patterns.

- Abstract
Activated microglia/macrophages infiltration, astrocyte migration, and increased production of inhibitory chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are standard harmful events taking place after the spinal cord injuries (SCI). The gliotic scar, viz. the outcome of chronic SCI, constitutes a long-lasting physical and chemical barrier to axonal regrowth. In the past two decades, various research groups targeted the hostile host microenvironments of the gliotic scar at the injury site. To this purpose, biomaterial scaffolds demonstrate to provide a promising potential for nervous cell restoration. We here focused our efforts on two self-assembling peptides (SAPs), featuring different self-assembled nanostructures, and on different methods of drug loading to exploit the neuroregenerative potential of Chondroitinase ABC (ChABC), a thermolabile pro-plastic agent attenuating the inhibitory action of CSPGs. Enzymatic activity of ChABC (usually lasting less than 72 hours in vitro) released from SAPs was remarkably detected up to 42 days in vitro. ChABC was continuously released in vitro from a few days to 42 days as well. Also, injections of ChABC loaded SAP hydrogels favored host neural regeneration and behavioral recovery in chronic SCI in rats. Hence, SAP hydrogels showed great promise for the delivery of Chondroitinase ABC in future therapies targeting chronic SCI.

- Abstract
Code smells are poor implementation choices applied by developers during software evolution that often lead to critical flaws or failure. Much in the same way, community smells reflect the presence of organizational and socio-technical issues within a software community that may lead to additional project costs. Recent empirical studies provide evidence that community smells are often---if not always---connected to circumstances such as code smells. In this paper we look deeper into this connection by conducting a mixed-methods empirical study of 117 releases from 9 open-source systems. The qualitative and quantitative sides of our mixed-methods study were run in parallel and assume a mutually-confirmative connotation. On the one hand, we survey 162 developers of the 9 considered systems to investigate whether developers perceive relationship between community smells and the code smells found in those projects. On the other hand, we perform a fine-grained analysis into the 117 releases of our dataset to measure the extent to which community smells impact code smell intensity (i.e., criticality). We then propose a code smell intensity prediction model that relies on both technical and community-related aspects. The results of both sides of our mixed-methods study lead to one conclusion: community-related factors contribute to the intensity of code smells. This conclusion supports the joint use of community and code smells detection as a mechanism for the joint management of technical and social problems around software development communities.

- Abstract
Tali risultati aprono nuove dimensioni nel campo della biomateriomica, consentendo di comprendere ed eventualmente controllare i complessi fenomeni che influe, Biomaterials for tissue engineering applications have to comply with several requirements, such as safety, biocompatibility and appropriate mechanical features. The development process of these biomaterials encompasses several scientific approaches, ranging from in-silico to in-vivo. The in-silico optimization of biomaterials features is attracting even larger attention. Indeed, the improvement of this approach will allow to reduce additional costs int the biomaterials development process, due to unnecessary experimental characterizations. According to this point-of-view, in this thesis is presented a molecular dynamics approach for biomaterial characterization. More in details, self-assembling peptides (SAPs) hydrogels scaffolds have been investigated at the nano-scale and micro-scale, to elucidate their intrinsic structure-property-function relationships. The atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) have been used for the elucidation of self-assembling pathways of peptide-based scaffolds. Due to the lack of crucial structural information in CG-MD simulations, the innovative software suite, dubbed Morphoscanner, has been employed for the elucidation of conformational aggregation patterns of SAPs. Then, the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of SAPs nanostructures have been investigated through the steered MD simulations. These evidences led the development of a CG-MD approach aiming to elucidate the complex interplay between cell membranes and SAPs nanofibrils. In particular, MARTINI CG-MD simulations have been used for understanding the effects of SAPS nanofibril on dynamics of lipid domains in neural membranes. Such achievements open up new dimensions in the field of biomateriomics, allowing to understand and eventually orchestrate the complex phenomena which affect the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of SAPs biomaterials for tissue engineering applications.

- Abstract
Due to limited time, budget or resources, a team is prone to introduce code that does not follow the best software development practices. This code that introduces instability in the software projects is known as Technical Debt (TD). Often, TD intentionally manifests in source code, which is known as Self-Admitted Technical Debt (SATD). This paper presents DebtHunter, a natural language processing (NLP)- and machine learning (ML)- based approach for identifying and classifying SATD in source code comments. The proposed classification approach combines two classification phases for differentiating between the multiple debt types. Evaluations over 10 open source systems, containing more than 259k comments, showed that the approach was able to improve the performance of others in the literature. The presented approach is supported by a tool that can help developers to effectively manage SATD. The tool complements the analysis over Java source code by allowing developers to also examine the associated issue tracker. DebtHunter can be used in a continuous evolution environment to monitor the development process and make developers aware of how and where SATD is introduced, thus helping them to manage and resolve it.

- Abstract
We observed a great and increasing interest in the last few years towards the evaluation of technical debt of software projects, in particular in the direction of code and architectural debt evaluation. This kind of analysis has not yet been performed for IoT projects. Hence, in this paper we start this exploration through the analysis of four Open Source IoT projects. We focus our attention on architectural debt and we exploit a tool, called Arcan, developed for architectural smell detection and for the computation of an architectural debt index. The results show that also IoT projects are subjected to architectural debt, and in particular to the presence of Cyclic Dependency and Unstable Dependency smells. However, there is evidence that the continuous refactoring of the code helps in avoiding the increase of debt, hence also developers of IoT projects should schedule periodical clean-ups of their code.

- Abstract
Technical debt (TD) has been recognized as an important quality problem for both software architecture and code. The evolution of TD techniques over the past years has led to a number of research and commercial tools. In addition, the increasing trend of opportunistic reuse (as opposed to systematic reuse), where developers reuse code assets in popular repositories, is changing the way components are selected and integrated into existing systems. However, reusing software opportunistically can lead to a loss of quality and induce TD, especially when the architecture is changed in the process. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the impact of opportunistic reuse in TD. In this paper, we carry out an exploratory study to investigate to what extent reusing components opportunistically negatively affects the quality of systems. We use one commercial and one research tool to analyze the TD ratios of three case systems, before and after opportunistically extending them with open-source software.

Radiotherapy (RT) represents an important therapeutic option for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. The aim of the current study is to examine trajectories in patients’ reported quality of life (QoL) aspects related to bowel function and bother, considering data from the PROState cancer monitoring in ITaly from the National Research Council (Pros-IT CNR) study, analyzed with growth mixture models. Data for patients who underwent RT, either associated or not associated with androgen deprivation therapy, were considered. QoL outcomes were assessed over a 2-year period from the diagnosis, using the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Prostate Cancer Index (Italian-UCLA-PCI). Three trajectories were identified for the bowel function, having three or more comorbidities and the use of 3D-CRT technique for RT were associated with the worst trajectory (OR = 3.80, 95% CI 2.04–7.08, OR = 2.17, 95% CI 1.22–3.87, respectively). Two trajectories were identified for the bowel bother scores, diabetes and the non-Image guided RT method were associated with being in the worst bowel bother trajectory group (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.06–2.67, OR = 2.57, 95% CI 1.70–3.86, respectively). The findings from this study suggest that the absence of comorbidities and the use of intensity modulated RT techniques with image guidance are related with a better tolerance to RT in terms of bowel side effects.
