Abstract: We present results of the Relic Axion Dark-Matter Exploratory Setup (RADES), a detector which is part of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), searching for axion dark matter in the 34.67$\mu$eV mass range. A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of g$_{a\gamma}\gtrsim 4\times10^{-13} \text{GeV}^{-1}$ over a mass range of 34.6738 $\mu$eV < $m_a$ < 34.6771 $\mu$eV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 $\mu$eV. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of exploring a wider mass range around the value probed by CAST-RADES in this work using similar coherent resonant cavities., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Abstract: Based on the observation of sizeable target-transverse-spin asymmetries in single-hadron and hadron-pair production in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS), the chiral-odd transversity quark distribution functions $h_1^q$ are nowadays well established. Several possible channels to access these functions were originally proposed. One candidate is the measurement of the polarisation of $\Lambda$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised nucleons, where the transverse polarisation of the struck quark might be transferred to the final-state hyperon. In this article, we present the COMPASS results on the transversity-induced polarisation of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised protons. Within the experimental uncertainties, no significant deviation from zero was observed. The results are discussed in the context of different models taking into account previous experimental results on $h_1^u$ and $h_1^d$., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We investigate the prospects for direct detection of Dark Matter (DM) particles, such as dark photons, incident on the upper atmosphere. A recent work relates the burst-like temperature excursions in the stratosphere at heights of ~38-47 km with incident invisible streaming matter. Surprisingly, dark photons match the reasoning presented in that work provided they constitute part of the local DM density. Dark photons mix with real photons with the same total energy without the need for an external field as would be required for instance for axions. Furthermore, the ionospheric plasma column above the stratosphere can enhance the dark photon to photon conversion due to resonance. The stratosphere is easily accessible via balloon flights. Balloon missions with up to a few tons of payload can be readily assembled to operate for 1-2 months at such atmospheric heights making for realistic short term endeavor of on-site direct DM search following this proposal. The approach need not be limited to streaming dark photons as other DM candidates might be searched simultaneously. Combining different types of measurements in a multi-band detector system and/or relating such investigations with other concurrent atmospheric observations, e.g. from space, may be proven to be the missing new approach in direct DM detection.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\omega$ meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $ \mu ^{+}$ and $ \mu ^{-}$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the range 5.0 GeV/$c^2$ $< W <$ 17.0 GeV/$c^2$, with the average kinematics $\langle Q^{2} \rangle=$ 2.1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$, $\langle W \rangle= 7.6$ GeV/$c^2$, and $\langle p^{2}_{\rm T} \rangle = 0.16$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Here, $Q^2$ denotes the virtuality of the exchanged photon, $W$ the mass of the final hadronic system and $p_T$ the transverse momentum of the $\omega$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma^*_T \to V_L$) indicate a violation of $s$-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a sizeable contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange (UPE) transitions that decreases with increasing $W$. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow to evaluate in a model-dependent way the contribution of UPE transitions and assess the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\omega$ production., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 1 appendix

Abstract: COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. Hadron identification in the momentum range between $3$ and $55 GeV/c$ is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter, RICH-1. To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 has been upgraded by replacing four MWPC-based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD-based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during the 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during the 2017 run. Abstract: The COMPASS experiment recently discovered a new isovector resonance-like signal with axial-vector quantum numbers, the $a_1(1420)$, decaying to $f_0(980)\pi$. With a mass too close to and a width smaller than the axial-vector ground state $a_1(1260)$, it was immediately interpreted as a new light exotic meson, similar to the $X$, $Y$, $Z$ states in the hidden-charm sector. We show that a resonance-like signal fully matching the experimental data is produced by the decay of the $a_1(1260)$ resonance into $K^\ast(\to K\pi)\bar{K}$ and subsequent rescattering through a triangle singularity into the coupled $f_0(980)\pi$ channel. The amplitude for this process is calculated using a new approach based on dispersion relations. The triangle-singularity model is fitted to the partial-wave data of the COMPASS experiment. Despite having less parameters, this fit shows a slightly better quality than the one using a resonance hypothesis and thus eliminates the need for an additional resonance in order to describe the data. We thereby demonstrate for the first time in the light-meson sector that a resonance-like structure in the experimental data can be described by rescattering through a triangle singularity, providing evidence for a genuine three-body effect., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We detail the sensitivity of the liquid xenon (LXe) DARWIN observatory to solar neutrinos via elastic electron scattering. We find that DARWIN will have the potential to measure the fluxes of five solar neutrino components: $pp$, $^7$Be, $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$. The precision of the $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$ components is hindered by the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe and, thus, would benefit from a depleted target. A high-statistics observation of $pp$ neutrinos would allow us to infer the values of the weak mixing angle, $\sin^2\theta_w$, and the electron-type neutrino survival probability, $P_e$, in the electron recoil energy region from a few keV up to 200 keV for the first time, with relative precision of 5% and 4%, respectively, at an exposure of 300 ty. An observation of $pp$ and $^7$Be neutrinos would constrain the neutrino-inferred solar luminosity down to 0.2%. A combination of all flux measurements would distinguish between the high (GS98) and low metallicity (AGS09) solar models with 2.1-2.5$\sigma$ significance, independent of external measurements from other experiments or a measurement of $^8$B neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in DARWIN. Abstract: The manifestation of the dark Universe begun with unexpected large scale astronomical observations. Here we are investigating the origin of small scale anomalies, like that of the annually observed temperature anomalies in the stratosphere. Unexpectedly, we observe a planetary relationship of the daily stratospheric temperature distribution. Its spectral shape does not match concurrent solar activity, or solar EUV emission, whose impact on the atmosphere is unequivocal. This behavior points at an additional energy source of exosolar origin. A viable concept behind such observations is based on possible gravitational focusing by the solar system towards the Earth of low speed invisible matter. We denote generic constituents from the dark Universe as invisible matter, in order to distinguish them from ordinary dark matter candidates like axions or WIMPs, which cannot have any noticeable impact on the stratosphere. The observed peaking planetary relations exclude on their own any conventional explanation. Only a somehow strongly interacting invisible streaming matter with the little screened upper stratosphere (noverhead about 1 gr/cm 2) can be behind the occasionally observed temperature increases. We also estimate an associated energy deposition O(W/m 2), which is variable over the 11 years solar cycle. For the widely assumed picture of a quasi not interacting dark Universe, this new exosolar energy is enormous. Since the atmosphere is uninterruptedly monitored since decades, it can serve also parasitically as a novel low threshold detector for the dark Universe, with built-in spatiotemporal resolution and the solar system acting temporally as signal amplifier. In future, analyzing more observations, for example, from the anomalous ionosphere, or, the transient sudden stratospheric warmings, the nature of the assumed invisible streams could be deciphered., Comment: 18 pages, 11 Figures

Abstract: The $\bar{\rm p} $ over p multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering for the first time using (anti-) protons carrying a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy, $z>0.5$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam impinging on an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2$ > 1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. The range in Bjorken-$x$ is restricted to $0.01 < x < 0.40$. Protons and antiprotons are identified in the momentum range $20 \div 60$ GeV/$c$. In the whole studied $z$-region, the $\bar{\rm p}$ over p multiplicity ratio is found to be below the lower limit expected from calculations based on leading-order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Extending our earlier analysis of the K$^-$ over K$^+$ multiplicity ratio by including now events with larger virtual-photon energies, this ratio becomes closer to the expectation of next-to-leading order pQCD. Abstract: The DARWIN observatory is a proposed next-generation experiment to search for particle dark matter and for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. Out of its 50$\,$t total natural xenon inventory, 40$\,$t will be the active target of a time projection chamber which thus contains about 3.6 t of $^{136}$Xe. Here, we show that its projected half-life sensitivity is $2.4\times10^{27}\,$yr, using a fiducial volume of 5t of natural xenon and 10$\,$yr of operation with a background rate of less than 0.2$~$events/(t$\cdot$yr) in the energy region of interest. This sensitivity is based on a detailed Monte Carlo simulation study of the background and event topologies in the large, homogeneous target. Abstract: Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cos\phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measured final-state hadrons in those SIDIS experiments receive a contribution from exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons, particularly important at large values of $z$, the fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron. In previous measurements of azimuthal asymmetries this contribution was not taken into account, because it was not known that it could distort the azimuthal modulations. Presently, a method to evaluate the contribution of the exclusive reactions to the azimuthal asymmetries measured by COMPASS has been developed. The subtraction of this contribution results in a better understanding of the kinematic effects, and the remaining non-zero $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulation gives indication for a non-zero Boer-Mulders effect., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5~m$^2$, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. They are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the upgrade are presented, including engineering, mass production, quality assessment and performance. Abstract: We report on a first measurement with a sensitive opto-mechanical force sensor designed for the direct detection of coupling of real chameleons to matter. These dark energy candidates could be produced in the Sun and stream unimpeded to Earth. The KWISP detector installed on the CAST axion search experiment at CERN looks for tiny displacements of a thin membrane caused by the mechanical effect of solar chameleons. The displacements are detected by a Michelson interferometer with a homodyne readout scheme. The sensor benefits from the focusing action of the ABRIXAS X-ray telescope installed at CAST, which increases the chameleon flux on the membrane. A mechanical chopper placed between the telescope output and the detector modulates the incoming chameleon stream. We present the results of the solar chameleon measurements taken at CAST in July 2017, setting an upper bound on the force acting on the membrane of $80$~pN at 95\% confidence level. The detector is sensitive for direct coupling to matter $10^4 \leq\beta_m \leq 10^8$, where the coupling to photons is locally bound to $\beta_\gamma \leq 10^{11}$., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: The physical properties of cometary nuclei observed today relate to their complex history and help to constrain their formation and evolution. In this article, we review some of the main physical properties of cometary nuclei and focus in particular on the thermal, mechanical, structural and dielectric properties, emphasizing the progress made during the Rosetta mission. Comets have a low density of 480 $\pm$ 220 kg m-3 and a low permittivity of 1.9 - 2.0, consistent with a high porosity of 70 - 80 %, are weak with a very low global tensile strength $<$100 Pa, and have a low bulk thermal inertia of 0 - 60 J K-1 m-2 s-1/2 that allowed them to preserve highly volatiles species (e.g. CO, CO2, CH4, N2) into their interior since their formation. As revealed by 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the above physical properties vary across the nucleus, spatially at its surface but also with depth. The broad picture is that the bulk of the nucleus consists of a weakly bonded, rather homogeneous material that preserved primordial properties under a thin shell of processed material, and possibly covered by a granular material; this cover might in places reach a thickness of several meters. The properties of the top layer (the first meter) are not representative of that of the bulk nucleus. Abstract: We report on a measurement of hard exclusive $\pi^0$ muoproduction on the proton by COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ beams of the CERN SPS impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. From the average of the measured $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ cross sections, the virtual-photon proton cross section is determined as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer between initial and final proton in the range $0.08\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2 < |t| < 0.64\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2$. The average kinematics of the measurement are $\langle Q^2 \rangle =2.0\; {(\text{GeV}/c)^2}$, $\langle \nu \rangle = 12.8\; {\text{GeV}}$, $\langle x_{Bj} \rangle = 0.093 $ and $\langle -t \rangle = 0.256\; {(\text{GeV}/c)^2} $. Fitting the azimuthal dependence reveals a combined contribution by transversely and longitudinally polarised photons of $(8.1 \ \pm \ 0.9_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 1.0}^{+ \ 1.1}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$, as well as transverse-transverse and longitudinal-transverse interference contributions of $(-6.0 \pm 1.3_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 0.7}^{+ \ 0.7}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$ and $(1.4 \pm 0.5_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 0.2}^{+ \ 0.3}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$, respectively. Our results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions. In the context of the phenomenological Goloskokov-Kroll model, the statistically significant transverse-transverse interference contribution constitutes clear experimental evidence for the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}_T$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: BackgroundProspective data on the natural history of anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are scarce in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men who have sex with men (MSM).MethodsWe analyzed incidence and clearance of HPV-16 and HPV-18 in a French cohort of HIV-infected MSM, aged ≥35 years, followed-up annually (n = 438, 2014-2018).ResultsHuman papillomavirus-16 and HPV-18 incidence were similar (~10% incident infections at 24 months). Human papillomavirus-16 incidence was higher among high-grade versus no lesion at baseline (adjusted incidence rate ratio = 3.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-8.18). Human papillomavirus-16 cleared significantly slower than HPV-18 (32% versus 54% by 24 months).ConclusionsIn conclusion, anal HPV-16 is more persistent than HPV-18, and its incidence correlates with a prior detection of high-grade lesions.

Abstract: Novel gaseous detectors of single photons for RICH applications have been developed and installed on COMPASS RICH-1 in 2016. They have a hybrid architecture consisting of two staggered THGEM layers (one equipped with a CsI photoconverting layer) and a bulk Micromegas; they cover a total area of 1.4 squared meters and operate stably and efficiently. They provide a single photon angular resolution of ~ 1.8 mrad and about 10 detected photons per ring at saturation. Abstract: Neutron pair distribution function analysis and first principles calculations have been employed to study short-range correlations in heavily disordered dielectric material Sr$_x$Ba$_{1-x}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ ($x=0.35, 0.5$ and 0.61). The combination of methods has been fruitful in pinpointing main local-structure features, their temperature behaviour and interrelation. A rather complex system of tilts is found to be both temperature and Sr-content sensitive with the biggest tilt magnitudes reached at low temperatures and high $x$. Relative Nb-O$_6$ displacements, directly responsible for material's ferroelectric properties, are shown to be distinct in two octahedra sub-systems with different freezing temperatures and disparate levels of deviation from macroscopic polarization direction. Intrinsic disorder caused by Sr, Ba and vacancy distribution is found to introduce local strain to the structure and directly influence octahedra tilting. These findings establish a new atomistic picture of the local structure -- property relationship in Sr$_x$Ba$_{1-x}$Nb$_2$O$_6$.

Abstract: The transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of hadrons, when weighted with the hadron transverse momentum $P_T$, allow for the extraction of important transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions. In particular, the weighted Sivers asymmetries provide direct information on the Sivers function, which is a leading-twist distribution that arises from a correlation between the transverse momentum of an unpolarised quark in a transversely polarised nucleon and the spin of the nucleon. Using the high-statistics data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration in 2010 with a transversely polarised proton target, we have evaluated two types of $P_T$-weighted Sivers asymmetries, which are both proportional to the product of the firsttransverse moment of the Sivers function and of the fragmentation function. The results are compared to the standard unweighted Sivers asymmetries and used to extract the first transverse moments of the Sivers distributions for $u$ and $d$ quarks., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: The influence of a staggered molecular field in frustrated rare-earth pyrochlores, produced via the magnetic iridium occupying the transition metal site, can generate exotic ground states, such as the fragmentation of the magnetization in the Ho compound. At variance with the Ising Ho$^{3+}$ moment, we focus on the behavior of the quasi isotropic magnetic moment of the Gd$^{3+}$ ion at the rare-earth site. By means of macroscopic measurements and neutron scattering, we find a complex situation where different components of the magnetic moment contribute to two antiferromagnetic non-collinear arrangements: a high temperature all in - all out order induced by the Ir molecular field, and Palmer and Chalker correlations that tend to order at much lower temperatures. This is enabled by the anisotropic nature of the Gd-Gd interactions and requires a weak easy-plane anisotropy of the Gd$^{3+}$ moment due to the mixing of the ground state with multiplets of higher spectral terms., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We report on a new search for solar chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). A GridPix detector was used to search for soft X-ray photons in the energy range from 200 eV to 10 keV from converted solar chameleons. No signiffcant excess over the expected background has been observed in the data taken in 2014 and 2015. We set an improved limit on the chameleon photon coupling, $\beta_\gamma < 5.7\times10^{10}$ for $1<\beta_\mathrm{m}<10^6$ at 95% C.L. improving our previous results by a factor two and for the first time reaching sensitivity below the solar luminosity bound for tachocline magnetic fields up to $12.5\,\mathrm{T}$., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5~m$^2$, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. These detectors are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the upgrade are presented, including engineering, mass production, quality assessment and performance. Abstract: We elaborate here why the antiferromagnetically ordered GdCrO$_3$ responds in a diamagnetic way under certain conditions, by monitoring the evolution of the microscopic global and local magnetic phases. Using high energy $\sim$ 0.3 eV neutrons, the magnetic ordering is shown to adopt three distinct magnetic phases at different temperatures: G$_x^{Cr}$,A$_y^{Cr}$,F$_z^{Cr}$ below N\'eel temperature = 171 K; (F$_x^{Cr}$, C$_y^{Cr}$, G$_z^{Cr}$)$\bullet$( F$_x$$^{Gd}$,C$_y$$^{Gd}$) below 7 K and an intermediate phase for 7 K $ \le T \le$ 20 K in the vicinity of spin-reorientation phase transition. Although, bulk magnetometry reveals a huge negative magnetization (NM) in the terms of both magnitude and temperature range ( $M_{- max}$ ( 18 K)$\sim$ 35 $\times M_{+ max}$ (161 K), $\Delta T \sim 110$ K in presence of $\mu_0H$ = 0.01 T); the long-range magnetic structure and derived ordered moments are unable to explain the NM. Real-space analysis of the total (Bragg's + diffuse) scattering reveals significant magnetic correlations extending up to $\sim$ 9 $\AA$. Accounting for these short-range correlations with a spin model reveals spin frustration in the S= 3 ground state, comprising competing first, second and third next nearest exchange interactions with values J$_1$ = 2.3 K, J$_2$ = -1.66 K and J$_3$ = 2.19 K in presence of internal field, governs the observance of NM in GdCrO$_{3}$., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We advocate the idea that there is a fundamentally new mechanism for the axion production in the Sun, which has never been discussed previously in the literature. This novel mechanism of the axion production is based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) Dark Matter Model. These axions will be produced in addition to well studied axions emitted due to the Primakoff effect. The AQN model was originally invented as a natural explanation of the observed ratio $\Omega_{\rm dark} \sim \Omega_{\rm visible}$ when the DM and visible matter densities assume the same order of magnitude values, irrespectively to the axion mass $m_a$ or initial misalignment angle $\theta_0$. This model, without adjustment of any parameters, reproduces reasonably the intensity of the extreme UV (EUV) radiation from the solar corona as a result of the AQN annihilation events with the solar material. This extra energy released in corona represents a resolution, within AQN framework, a long standing puzzle known in the literature as the "solar corona heating mystery". The same annihilation events also produce the relativistic axions. This represents a new mechanism of the axion production, and constitutes the main subject of this work. The flux of these axions is unambiguously fixed in this model and expressed in terms of the EUV luminosity from corona. We also compute the spectral properties of these axions and make few comments on the potentials for the discovery of these solar axions by the upgraded CAST (CERN Axion Solar Axion) experiment., Comment: matches the published version

Abstract: We suggest a new approach to search for galactic axions or other similar exotica. Streaming dark matter (DM) could have a better discovery potential because of flux enhancement, due to gravitational lensing when the Sun and/or a planet are aligned with a DM stream. Of interest are also axion miniclusters, in particular, if the solar system has trapped one during its formation. Wide-band axion antennae fit this concept, but also the proposed fast narrow band scanning. A network of detectors can provide full time coverage and a large axion mass acceptance. Abstract: The sub-micron range in the field of short distance interactions has yet to be opened to experimental investigation, and may well hold the key to understanding al least part of the dark matter puzzle. The aKWISP (advanced-KWISP) project introduces the novel Double Membrane Interaction Monitor (DMIM), a combined source-sensing device where interaction distances can be as short as 100 nm or even 10 nm, much below the 1-10 micron distance which is the lower limit encountered by current experimental efforts. aKWISP builds on the technology and the results obtained with the KWISP opto-mechanical force sensor now searching at CAST for the direct coupling to matter of solar chameleons. It will reach the ultimate quantum-limited sensitivity by exploiting an array of technologies, including operation at milli-Kelvin temperatures. Abstract: The Last Interglacial (129–116 thousand years ago (ka)) represents one of the warmest climate intervals of the past 800,000 years and the most recent time when sea level was metres higher than today. However, the timing and magnitude of the peak warmth varies between reconstructions, and the relative importance of individual sources that contribute to the elevated sea level (mass gain versus seawater expansion) during the Last Interglacial remains uncertain. Here we present the first mean ocean temperature record for this interval from noble gas measurements in ice cores and constrain the thermal expansion contribution to sea level. Mean ocean temperature reached its maximum value of 1.1 ± 0.3 °C warmer-than-modern values at the end of the penultimate deglaciation at 129 ka, which resulted in 0.7 ± 0.3 m of thermosteric sea-level rise relative to present level. However, this maximum in ocean heat content was a transient feature; mean ocean temperature decreased in the first several thousand years of the interglacial and achieved a stable, comparable-to-modern value by ~127 ka. The synchroneity of the peak in mean ocean temperature with proxy records of abrupt transitions in the oceanic and atmospheric circulation suggests that the mean ocean temperature maximum is related to the accumulation of heat in the ocean interior during the preceding period of reduced overturning circulation.

Abstract: We have performed the most comprehensive resonance-model fit of $\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ states using the results of our previously published partial-wave analysis (PWA) of a large data set of diffractive-dissociation events from the reaction $\pi^- + p \to \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ + p_\text{recoil}$ with a 190 GeV/$c$ pion beam. The PWA results, which were obtained in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3\pi} < 2.5$ GeV/$c^2$, and simultaneously in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t' < 1.0$ $($GeV$/c)^2$, are subjected to a resonance-model fit using Breit-Wigner amplitudes to simultaneously describe a subset of 14 selected waves using 11 isovector light-meson states with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $4^{++}$, and spin-exotic $1^{-+}$ quantum numbers. The model contains the well-known resonances $\pi(1800)$, $a_1(1260)$, $a_2(1320)$, $\pi_2(1670)$, $\pi_2(1880)$, and $a_4(2040)$. In addition, it includes the disputed $\pi_1(1600)$, the excited states $a_1(1640)$, $a_2(1700)$, and $\pi_2(2005)$, as well as the resonancelike $a_1(1420)$. We measure the resonance parameters mass and width of these objects by combining the information from the PWA results obtained in the 11 $t'$ bins. We extract the relative branching fractions of the $\rho(770) \pi$ and $f_2(1270) \pi$ decays of $a_2(1320)$ and $a_4(2040)$, where the former one is measured for the first time. In a novel approach, we extract the $t'$ dependence of the intensity of the resonances and of their phases. The $t'$ dependence of the intensities of most resonances differs distinctly from the $t'$ dependence of the nonresonant components. For the first time, we determine the $t'$ dependence of the phases of the production amplitudes and confirm that the production mechanism of the Pomeron exchange is common to all resonances., Comment: 224 pages, 172 figures

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of exclusive single-photon muoproduction on the proton by COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarized $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ beams of the CERN SPS impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. We determine the dependence of the average of the measured $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$ cross sections for deeply virtual Compton scattering on the squared four-momentum transfer $t$ from the initial to the final final proton. The slope $B$ of the $t$-dependence is fitted with a single exponential function, which yields $B=(4.3 \ \pm \ 0.6_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.3}^{+ \ 0.1}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}}) (\text{GeV}/c)^{-2}$. This result can be converted into an average transverse extension of partons in the proton, $\sqrt{\langle r_{\perp}^2 \rangle} = (0.58 \ \pm \ 0.04_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.02}^{+ \ 0.01}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\text{fm}$. For this measurement, the average virtuality of the photon mediating the interaction is $\langle Q^2 \rangle = 1.8\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2$ and the average value of the Bjorken variable is $\langle x_{\text{Bj}} \rangle = 0.056$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall below the lower limits expected from calculations based on leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Also, the kaon multiplicity ratio shows a strong dependence on the missing mass of the single-kaon production process. This suggests that within the perturbative quantum chromodynamics formalism an additional correction may be required, which takes into account the phase space available for hadronisation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: On 3 July 2016, several instruments on board ESA's Rosetta spacecraft detected signs of an outburst event on comet 67P, at a heliocentric distance of 3.32 AU from the sun, outbound from perihelion. We here report on the inferred properties of the ejected dust and the surface change at the site of the outburst. The activity coincided with the local sunrise and continued over a time interval of 14 - 68 minutes. It left a 10m-sized icy patch on the surface. The ejected material comprised refractory grains of several hundred microns in size, and sub-micron-sized water ice grains. The high dust mass production rate is incompatible with the free sublimation of crystalline water ice under solar illumination as the only acceleration process. Additional energy stored near the surface must have increased the gas density. We suggest a pressurized sub-surface gas reservoir, or the crystallization of amorphous water ice as possible causes., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

Abstract: COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study Hadron Structure and Spectroscopy. Hadron Identification in the momentum range between 3 and 55 GeV/c is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter (RICH-1). To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 have been upgraded by replacing four MWPCs based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a MicroMegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during 2017 run. Abstract: A semi-inclusive measurement of charged hadron multiplicities in deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target was performed using data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN. The following kinematic domain is covered by the data: photon virtuality $Q^{2}>1$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$, invariant mass of the hadronic system $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$, Bjorken scaling variable in the range $0.003 < x < 0.4$, fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron in the range $0.2 < z < 0.8$, square of the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon direction in the range 0.02 (GeV/$c)^2 < P_{\rm{hT}}^{2} < 3$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The multiplicities are presented as a function of $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ in three-dimensional bins of $x$, $Q^2$, $z$ and compared to previous semi-inclusive measurements. We explore the small-$P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ region, i.e. $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2} < 1$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$, where hadron transverse momenta are expected to arise from non-perturbative effects, and also the domain of larger $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$, where contributions from higher-order perturbative QCD are expected to dominate. The multiplicities are fitted using a single-exponential function at small $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ to study the dependence of the average transverse momentum $\langle P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}\rangle$ on $x$, $Q^2$ and $z$. The power-law behaviour of the multiplicities at large $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ is investigated using various functional forms. Abstract: We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction $\mu^+~N \rightarrow \mu^+ (J\!/\!\psi\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^{\pm}~N'$ using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/$c$ and 200 GeV/$c$ momentum. In the $J\!/\!\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 $\sigma$. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the $X(3872)$. The shape of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ mass distribution from the observed decay into $J\!/\!\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ shows disagreement with previous observations for $X(3872)$. The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of $X(3872)$ with $C = -1$ predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into $J\!/\!\psi\pi^+\pi^-$ is determined to be 71$\pm$28(stat)$\pm$39(syst) pb., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We discuss the physics case for and the concept of a medium-scale axion helioscope with sensitivities in the axion-photon coupling a few times better than CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). Search for an axion-like particle with these couplings is motivated by several persistent astrophysical anomalies. We present early conceptual design, existing infrastructure, projected sensitivity and timeline of such a helioscope (Troitsk Axion Solar Telescope Experiment, TASTE) to be constructed in the Institute for Nuclear Research, Troitsk, Russia. Abstract: During 2003--2015, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has searched for $a\to\gamma$ conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. In its final phase of solar axion searches (2013--2015), CAST has returned to evacuated magnet pipes, which is optimal for small axion masses. The absence of a significant signal above background provides a world leading limit of $g_{a\gamma} < 0.66 \times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ (95% C.L.) on the axion-photon coupling strength for $m_a \lesssim 0.02$ eV. Compared with the first vacuum phase (2003--2004), the sensitivity was vastly increased with low-background x-ray detectors and a new x-ray telescope. Abstract: The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/$c$, $\pi^{-}$ beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/$c^2$ and 8.5 GeV/$c^2$. The observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. We present two other asymmetries originating from the pion Boer-Mulders TMD PDFs convoluted with either the nucleon transversity or pretzelosity TMD PDFs. These DY results are obtained at a hard scale comparable to that of a recent COMPASS SIDIS measurement and hence allow unique tests of fundamental QCD universality predictions., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: A new search strategy for the detection of the elusive dark matter (DM) axion is proposed. The idea is based on streaming DM axions, whose flux might get temporally enormously enhanced due to gravitational lensing. This can happen if the Sun or some planet (including the Moon) is found along the direction of a DM stream propagating towards the Earth location. The experimental requirements to the axion haloscope are a wide-band performance combined with a fast axion rest mass scanning mode, which are feasible. Once both conditions have been implemented in a haloscope, the axion search can continue parasitically almost as before. Interestingly, some new DM axion detectors are operating wide-band by default. In order not to miss the actually unpredictable timing of a potential short duration signal, a network of co-ordinated axion antennae is required, preferentially distributed world-wide. Abstract: The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons in the same process is presented. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon-gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons. With a significance of more than two standard deviations a negative value is obtained for the gluon Sivers asymmetry. Abstract: Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a $^6$LiD target. The data were taken at $160~{\rm GeV}$ beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range $1~({\rm GeV}/c)^2 < Q^2 < 100~({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ in photon virtuality, $0.004 4~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry $A_1^{\rm d}$ and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function $g_1^{\rm d}$ are presented in bins of $x$ and $Q^2$. Towards lowest accessible values of $x$, $g_1^{\rm d}$ decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final $g_1^{\rm d}$ values together with the recently published final $g_1^{\rm p}$ values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the $g_1$ world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge $a_0$, {which is identified in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin}, is extracted from only the COMPASS deuteron data with negligible extrapolation uncertainty: $a_0 (Q^2 = 3~({\rm GeV}/c)^2) = 0.32 \pm 0.02_{\rm stat} \pm0.04_{\rm syst} \pm 0.05_{\rm evol}$. Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function $g_1^{\rm p}$, the results on $g_1^{\rm d}$ constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of $g_1$ through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures
