We analyze how the crust equation of state affects several neutron star properties and how it impacts on possible constraints inferred from astrophysical observations. Using three distinct crusts, we generate three sets of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. The equations of state are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and compatible with astrophysical observations. The relations between the tidal deformability $\Lambda$ and compactness $C$, Love number $k_2$ and radius of neutron star with mass $M$ are studied, and the effect of the crust equation of state on these relations analyzed. In most of the relations, the impact of the crust equation of state is not larger that 2\%. If, however, a fixed neutron star mass is considered, the relation between the tidal deformability and the radius depends on the crust. We have found that the relation $\Lambda_{M_i} = \alpha R_{M_i}^{\beta}$ becomes almost exact and crust independent for massive neutron stars. It is shown that it is possible to determine the tidal deformability of an 1.4$M_\odot$ star from the GW179817 effective tidal deformability $\tilde\Lambda$ with an accuracy of at least $\approx 10\%$. A high correlation between $\tilde\Lambda$ and the radius of the most massive star of the neutron star binary was confirmed, however, it was demonstrated that the crust has an effect of $\approx 14\%$ on this relation. Higher-order repulsive interactions are included in the three-flavor NJL model in order to describe the quark phase of an hybrid star. The effect of 4-quark and 8-quark vector-isoscalar interactions in the stability of hybrid star configurations is analyzed. The presence of a 8-quark vector-isoscalar channel is seen to be crucial in generating large quark branches in the $M(R)$ diagram. This is due to its stiffening effect on the quark matter equation of state which arises from the non-linear density dependence of the speed of sound. This additional interaction channel allows for the appearance of a quark core at moderately low NS masses, $\sim 1M_{\odot}$, and provides the required repulsion to preserve the star stability up to $\sim2.1M_{\odot}$. Furthermore, we show that both the heaviest NS mass generated, $M_{\text{max}}$, and its radii, $R_{\text{max}}$, are quite sensitive to the strength of 8-quark vector-isoscalar channel, leading to a considerable decrease of $R_{\text{max}}$ as the coupling increases. This behavior imprints a considerable deviation from the purely hadronic matter equation of state in the $\Lambda(M)$ diagram, which might be a possible signature of the quark matter existence, even for moderately low NS masses, $\sim 1.4\, M_\odot$. We describe charge-neutral neutron star matter in $\beta-$equilibrium using hybrid equations of state, where a first-order phase transition from hadronic to quark matter is realized. The hadronic matter is described in a model-independent way by a Taylor expansion around saturation density $n_0$, while the three-flavor NJL model is used for the quark matter. Exploring the present uncertainty on the empirical parameters of nuclear matter and the parameter space of the NJL model, we construct two datasets of thermodynamically consistent and causal hybrid EoSs, compatible with astrophysical observations. We conclude that, to sustain a considerable quark core size, the intensity of the phase transition from hadron to quark matter cannot be strong, having a energy density gap below $200$ MeV/fm$^3$, and must occur at baryon densities not above four times the saturation density. A non zero but not too strong quark vector-isoscalar term and a weak vector isovector quark term are required. Large quark cores carrying almost half of the star mass are possible inside neutron stars with a maximum mass $\approx 2.2 M_\odot$. To get a considerable number of hybrid EoS predicting quark matter already inside neutron stars with a mass $\sim 1.4 M_\odot$, we require that the onset of quarks occurs in the range $1.3n_0$ and $2.5n_0$. Neutron stars with large quark cores corresponding to more than one fourth of the total star mass, are possible if the energy density gap and the pressure at transition are below 100 MeV/fm$^3$. However, under these constraints, the maximum neutron star mass is limited to $ \lesssim 2.06 M_{\odot}$. We search for possible correlations between neutron star observables and thermodynamic quantities that characterize high density nuclear matter. We generate a set of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. Each equation of state which is a functional of the nuclear matter parameters is thermodynamically consistent, causal and compatible with astrophysical observations. We find that the neutron star tidal deformability and radius are strongly correlated with the pressure, the energy density and the sound velocity at different densities. Similar correlations are also exhibited by a large set of mean-field models based on non-relativistic and relativistic nuclear energy density functionals. These model independent correlations can be employed to constrain the equation of state at different densities above saturation from measurements of NS properties with multi-messenger observations. In particular, precise constraints on the radius of PSR J0030+0451 thanks to NICER observations would allow to better infer the properties of matter around two times the nuclear saturation density., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We explore supervised machine learning methods in extracting the non-linear maps between neutron stars (NS) observables and the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. Using a Taylor expansion around saturation density, we have generated a set of model independent EoS describing stellar matter constrained by nuclear matter parameters that are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and consistent with astrophysical observations. From this set, the full non-linear dependencies of the NS tidal deformability and radius on the nuclear matter parameters were learned using two distinct machine learning methods. Due to the high accuracy of the learned non-linear maps, we were able to analyze the impact of each nuclear matter parameter on the NS observables, identify dependencies on the EoS properties beyond linear correlations and predict which stars allow us to draw strong constraints., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures; matches the published version

Employing the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we determine the net-baryon number fluctuations of magnetized three-flavor quark matter. We show that the magnetic field changes the nature of the strange quark transition from crossover to first-order at low temperatures. The net-baryon number fluctuations for three-flavor quark matter are computed within the Polyakov extended Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Two models with vanishing and nonvanishing vector interactions are considered. While the former predicts a critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram, the latter predicts no CEP. We show that the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities in the phase diagram is still present even in the absence of a CEP. Therefore, from the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities solely, one cannot assume the existence of a CEP. We analyze other possible properties that may distinguish the two scenarios, and determine the behavior of the net-baryon number fluctuations and the velocity of sound along several isentropes, with moderate and small values. It is shown that the value of the susceptibilities ratios and the velocity of sound at two or three isentropic lines could possibly allow to distinguish both scenarios, a phase diagram with or without CEP. The kurtosis and skewness of net baryon-number fluctuations are studied for the magnetized phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter within the Polyakov extended Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Two models with magnetic catalysis and inverse magnetic catalysis are considered. Special attention is given to their behavior in the neighborhood of the light and strange critical end points (CEPs). Several isentropic trajectories that come close the CEPs are studied in order to analyze possible signatures of a CEP in the presence of external magnetic fields. The effect of the magnetic field on the velocity of sound, $v_s^2$, when both the light and strange CEPs are approached from the crossover region is also investigated by calculating their temperature and baryon chemical potential dependencies at fixed distances from these CEPs. Regions with large fluctuations but no CEP in nonmagnetized matter develop a CEP under the action of a strong magnetic field. Besides, the Landau quantization of the quark trajectories may result in the appearance of extra CEPs, in particular, in the strange sector for strong magnetic fields, identifiable by the net baryon-number fluctuations. Stiffer (smoother) fluctuations in the region of the CEP are characteristic of models that do not predict (do predict) the inverse magnetic catalysis at zero chemical potential. Particularly interesting is the ratio $\chi^4_B/\chi^2_B$ that has a more pronounced peak structure, indicating that it is eventually a more convenient probe for the search of a CEP. Using the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the Polyakov loop, we determine the structure of the QCD phase diagram in an external magnetic field. Beyond the usual NJL model with constant couplings, we also consider a variant with a magnetic field dependent scalar coupling, which reproduces the Inverse Magnetic Catalysis (IMC) at zero chemical potential. The magnetized phase diagram for three-flavor quark matter is studied within the Polyakov extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The order parameters are analyzed with special emphasis on the strange quark condensate. We show that the presence of an external magnetic field induces several critical endpoints (CEPs) in the strange sector, which arise due to the multiple phase transitions that the strange quark undergoes. The spinodal and binodal regions of the phase transitions are shown to increase with external magnetic field strength. The influence of strong magnetic fields on the isentropic trajectories around the several CEPs is analyzed. A focusing effect is observed on the region towards the CEPs that are related with the strange quark phase transitions. In this work we examine possible effects of an external magnetic field in the strongly interacting matter phase diagram. The study is performed using the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Possible consequences of the inverse magnetic catalysis effect on the phase diagram at both finite chemical potential and temperature are analyzed. We devote special emphasis on how the location of the multiple critical end points (CEPs) change in a magnetized medium: the presence of an external magnetic field induces several CEPs in the strange sector, which arise due to the multiple phase transitions that the strange quark undergoes. We also study the deconfinement transition which turns out to be less sensitive to the external magnetic field when compared to the quark phase transitions. The pasta phases are calculated for warm stellar matter in a framework of relativistic mean-field models, including the possibility of light cluster formation. Results from three different semiclassical approaches are compared with a quantum statistical calculation. Light clusters are considered as point-like particles, and their abundances are determined from the minimization of the free energy. The couplings of the light-clusters to mesons are determined from experimental chemical equilibrium constants and many-body quantum statistical calculations. The effect of these light clusters on the chemical potentials is also discussed. The effect of an external magnetic field in QCD phase diagram, namely, in the the location of the critical end point (CEP) is investigated. Using the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop, it is shown that when an external magnetic field is applied its effect on the CEP depends on the strength of the coupling. The effect of a strong magnetic field on the location of the critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram is discussed under different scenarios. In particular, we consider the contribution of the vector interaction and take into account the inverse magnetic catalysis obtained in lattice QCD calculations at zero chemical potential. The discussion is realized within the (2+1) Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. It is shown that the vector interaction and the magnetic field have opposite competing effects, and that the winning effect depends strongly on the intensity of the magnetic field. The inverse magnetic catalysis at zero chemical potential has two distinct effects for magnetic fields above $\gtrsim 0.3$ GeV$^2$: it shifts the CEP to lower chemical potentials, hinders the increase of the CEP temperature and prevents a too large increase of the baryonic density at the CEP. For fields $eB<0.1$ GeV$^2$ the competing effects between the vector contribution and the magnetic field can move the CEP to regions of temperature and density in the phase diagram that could be more easily accessible to experiments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; PRD version

We investigate the QCD phase diagram at zero chemical potential and finite temperature in the presence of an external magnetic field within the three flavor Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and entangled Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models looking for the inverse magnetic catalysis. Two scenarios for a scalar coupling parameter dependent on the magnetic field intensity are considered.
