When no arterial input function is available, quantification of dynamic PET images requires a previous step devoted to the extraction of a reference time-activity curve (TAC). Factor analysis is often applied for this purpose. This paper introduces a novel approach that conducts a new kind of nonlinear factor analysis relying on a compartment model, and computes the kinetic parameters of specific binding tissues jointly. To this end, it capitalizes on data-driven parametric imaging methods to provide a physical description of the underlying PET data, directly relating the specific binding with the kinetics of the non-specific binding in the corresponding tissues. This characterization is introduced into the factor analysis formulation to yield a novel nonlinear unmixing model designed for PET image analysis. This model also explicitly introduces global kinetic parameters that allow for a direct estimation of the binding potential with respect to the free fractions in each non-specific binding tissue. The performance of the method is evaluated on synthetic and real data to demonstrate its potential interest.

It has been proposed that there could be a mirror copy of the standard model particles, restoring the parity symmetry in the weak interaction on the global level. Oscillations between a neutral standard model particle, such as the neutron, and its mirror counterpart could potentially answer various standing issues in physics today. Astrophysical studies and terrestrial experiments led by ultracold neutron storage measurements have investigated neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations and imposed constraints on the theoretical parameters. Recently, further analysis of these ultracold neutron storage experiments has yielded statistically significant anomalous signals that may be interpreted as neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations, assuming nonzero mirror magnetic fields. The neutron electric dipole moment collaboration performed a dedicated search at the Paul Scherrer Institute and found no evidence of neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations. Thereby, the following new lower limits on the oscillation time were obtained: $\tau_{nn'} > 352~$s at $B'=0$ (95% C.L.), $\tau_{nn'} > 6~\text{s}$ for all $0.4~\mu\text{T}9~\text{s}$ for all $5.0~\mu\text{T}

We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a Hg-199 co-magnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. Psychological bias towards, or away from, a prior measurement or a theory prediction is an intrinsic threat to any data analysis. While various methods can be used to avoid the bias, e.g. actively not looking at the result, only data blinding is a traceable and thus trustworthy method to circumvent the bias and to convince a public audience that there is not even an accidental psychological bias. Data blinding is nowadays a standard practice in particle physics, but it is particularly difficult for experiments searching for the neutron electric dipole moment, as several cross measurements, in particular of the magnetic field, create a self-consistent network into which it is hard to inject a fake signal. We present an algorithm that modifies the data without influencing the experiment. Results of an automated analysis of the data are used to change the recorded spin state of a few neutrons of each measurement cycle. The flexible algorithm is applied twice to the data, to provide different data to various analysis teams. This gives us the option to sequentially apply various blinding offsets for separate analysis steps with independent teams. The subtle modification of the data allows us to modify the algorithm and to produce a re-blinded data set without revealing the blinding secret. The method was designed for the 2015/2016 measurement campaign of the nEDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. However, it can be re-used with minor modification for the follow-up experiment n2EDM, and may be suitable for comparable efforts.

An array of sixteen laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic field readout. We present two applications of the magnetometer array directly beneficial to the nEDM experiment: (i) the implementation of a strategy to correct for the drift of the vertical magnetic field gradient and (ii) a procedure to homogenize the magnetic field. The first reduces the uncertainty of the new nEDM result. The second enables transverse neutron spin relaxation times exceeding 1500 s, improving the statistical sensitivity of the nEDM experiment by about 35% and effectively increasing the rate of nEDM data taking by a factor of 1.8.

Magnetic field uniformity is of the utmost importance in experiments to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron. A general parametrization of the magnetic field in terms of harmonic polynomial modes is proposed, going beyond the linear-gradients approximation. We review the main undesirable effects of non-uniformities: depolarization of ultracold neutrons, and Larmor frequency shifts of neutrons and mercury atoms. The theoretical predictions for these effects were verified by dedicated measurements with the single-chamber nEDM apparatus installed at the Paul Scherrer Institute.

We report on the strategy used to optimize the sensitivity of our search for a neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Measurements were made upon ultracold neutrons stored within a single chamber at the heart of our apparatus. A mercury cohabiting magnetometer together with an array of cesium magnetometers were used to monitor the magnetic field, which was controlled and shaped by a series of precision field coils. In addition to details of the setup itself, we describe the chosen path to realize an appropriate balance between achieving the highest statistical sensitivity alongside the necessary control on systematic effects. The resulting irreducible sensitivity is better than 1*10-26 ecm. We present the new spectrometer for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) search at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), called n2EDM. The setup is at room temperature in vacuum using ultracold neutrons. n2EDM features a large UCN double storage chamber design with neutron transport adapted to the PSI UCN source. The design builds on experience gained from the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017. The neutron and its hypothetical mirror counterpart, a sterile state degenerate in mass, could spontaneously mix in a process much faster than the neutron $\beta$-decay. Two groups have performed a series of experiments in search of neutron - mirror-neutron ($n-n'$) oscillations. They reported no evidence, thereby setting stringent limits on the oscillation time $\tau_{nn'}$. Later, these data sets have been further analyzed by Berezhiani et al.(2009-2017), and signals, compatible with $n-n'$ oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields, have been reported. The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Collaboration based at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a new series of experiments to further test these signals. In this paper, we describe and motivate our choice of run configurations with an optimal filling time of $29~$s, storage times of $180~$s and $380~$s, and applied magnetic fields of $10~\mu$T and $20~\mu$T. The choice of these run configurations ensures a reliable overlap in settings with the previous efforts and also improves the sensitivity to test the signals. We also elaborate on the technique of normalizing the neutron counts, making such a counting experiment at the ultra-cold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute possible. Furthermore, the magnetic field characterization to meet the requirements of this $n-n'$ oscillation search is demonstrated. In a Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$-model, we define chonodynamical effects due to the choice of atomic clocks as standard reference clocks and we develop a formalism able to quantitatively separate them from the usual effective dark sources one has in extended theories. We apply the formalism to Hubble drift and briefly discuss the issue about the physical frame. In particular, we argue that there is no physical frame in the sense one does different things in different frames and that, in a sense, is the physical characteristic of extended gravity. Archetypal scenarios for change detection generally consider two images acquired through sensors of the same modality. However, in some specific cases such as emergency situations, the only images available may be those acquired through sensors of different modalities. This paper addresses the problem of unsupervisedly detecting changes between two observed images acquired by sensors of different modalities with possibly different resolutions. These sensor dissimilarities introduce additional issues in the context of operational change detection that are not addressed by most of the classical methods. This paper introduces a novel framework to effectively exploit the available information by modelling the two observed images as a sparse linear combination of atoms belonging to a pair of coupled overcomplete dictionaries learnt from each observed image. As they cover the same geographical location, codes are expected to be globally similar, except for possible changes in sparse spatial locations. Thus, the change detection task is envisioned through a dual code estimation which enforces spatial sparsity in the difference between the estimated codes associated with each image. This problem is formulated as an inverse problem which is iteratively solved using an efficient proximal alternating minimization algorithm accounting for nonsmooth and nonconvex functions. The proposed method is applied to real images with simulated yet realistic and real changes. We consider the cosmological models based on Palatini f(R)-theory for the function f(R)=aR-2bR^2-3c/R, which, when only dust visible matter is considered, is called dune cosmology in view of the shape of the function f(R(a)) (being a the scale factor). We discuss about the meaning of solving the model, and interpret it according to Ehlers-Pirani-Schild framework as defining a Weyl geometry on spacetime. Accordingly, we extend the definitions of luminosity distance, proper distance, and redshift to Weyl geometries and fit the values of parameters to SNIa data. Since the theoretical prediction is model-dependent, we argue that the it is affected by an extra choice, namely a model for atomic clocks, which, in principle, produces observable effects. We discuss the design for a discrete, immediate, simple relativistic positioning system (rPS) which is potentially able of self-positioning (up to isometries) and operating without calibration or ground control assistance. The design is discussed in dimension two on spacetime (i.e. one spatial dimension plus one time dimension), in Minkowski and Schwarzschild solutions, as well as in dimension three (i.e. two spatial dimensions plus one time dimension) in Minkowski. The system works without calibration, clock synchronizations, or a priori knowledge about the motion of clocks, it is able to self-diagnose hypotheses break down (for example, if one clock temporarily becomes not-freely falling, or the gravitational field changes) and it is automatically back and operational when the assumed conditions are restored. In the Schwarzschild case, we show that the system can also best fit the gravitational mass of the source of the gravitational field and stress that no weak field assumptions are made anywhere. In particular, the rPS we propose can work in a region close to the horizon since it does not use approximations or PPN expansions. More generally, the rPS can be adapted as detectors for the gravitational field and we shall briefly discuss their role in testing different theoretical settings for gravity. Unsupervised change detection techniques are generally constrained to two multi-band optical images acquired at different times through sensors sharing the same spatial and spectral resolution. This scenario is suitable for a straight comparison of homologous pixels such as pixel-wise differencing. However, in some specific cases such as emergency situations, the only available images may be those acquired through different kinds of sensors with different resolutions. Recently some change detection techniques dealing with images with different spatial and spectral resolutions, have been proposed. Nevertheless, they are focused on a specific scenario where one image has a high spatial and low spectral resolution while the other has a low spatial and high spectral resolution. This paper addresses the problem of detecting changes between any two multi-band optical images disregarding their spatial and spectral resolution disparities. We propose a method that effectively uses the available information by modeling the two observed images as spatially and spectrally degraded versions of two (unobserved) latent images characterized by the same high spatial and high spectral resolutions. Covering the same scene, the latent images are expected to be globally similar except for possible changes in spatially sparse locations. Thus, the change detection task is envisioned through a robust fusion task which enforces the differences between the estimated latent images to be spatially sparse. We show that this robust fusion can be formulated as an inverse problem which is iteratively solved using an alternate minimization strategy. The proposed framework is implemented for an exhaustive list of applicative scenarios and applied to real multi-band optical images. A comparison with state-of-the-art change detection methods evidences the accuracy of the proposed robust fusion-based strategy.
