By analyzing the research trends and hot spots in this field, the visualization analysis map is constructed.Methods: The contents of the selected articles were sorted out and analyzed by bibliometrics. We use CiteSpace, Vosviewer and HistCite to visualize literature information, including national publication statistics, institutions, authors, journal partnerships, and citations of published articles.Results: Among the 2942 articles, the United States and China ranked first in both article circulation and TGCS, and many countries also cooperated. The collaboration between schools and research institutions is a core part of dissertation research institution collaboration, with most authors coming from the same institution. Most of the literature studies on the mechanisms and methods of promoting diabetic wound healing. Improving cell function or making innovative attempts in local treatment are the fruits of researchers’ efforts to promote diabetic wound healing in recent years.Conclusion: Through the metrology method, the time distribution, author institution, cooperation network, research status, research hotspot and development trend of the literature on the influence of diabetes on wound healing were intuitively displayed, which provided a reference for further research and development direction.Keywords: diabetes, wound healing, bibliometrics, visualized analysis, Citespace

All patients accepted preoperative CGA by the multidisciplinary team using 13 common scales across 15 domains reflecting the multi-organ functions. The variables included demographic data, scales in CGA, comorbidities, laboratory tests and intraoperative anesthetic data. Cognitive function was assessed by Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale within 48 hours after admission and after surgery. Dropping of ≥ 1 point between the preoperative and postoperative scale was defined as POCD.Results: We enrolled 119 patients. The median age was 80.00 years [IQR, 77.00, 82.00] and 68 patients (57.1%) were female. Forty-two patients (35.3%) developed POCD. Three cognitive domains including calculation (P = 0.046), recall (P = 0.047) and attention (P = 0.007) were significantly worsened after surgery. Univariate analysis showed that disability of instrumental activity of daily living, incidence rate of postoperative respiratory failure (PRF) ≥ 4.2%, STOP-Bang scale score, Caprini risk scale score and Sufentanil for maintenance of anesthesia were different between the POCD and non-POCD patients. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, PRF ≥ 4.2% (odds ratio [OR] = 2.343; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.028– 5.551; P = 0.046) and Sufentanil for maintenance of anesthesia (OR = 0.260; 95% CI: 0.057– 0.859; P = 0.044) was independently associated with POCD as risk and protective factors, respectively.Conclusion: Our study suggests that POCD is frequent among older patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery, in which decline of calculation, recall and attention was predominant. Abstract

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Thus, there is a pressing need for a serologic biomarker with higher precision for clinical practice. This study aims to evaluate the predictive capacity of monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for UC disease activity.Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 81 UC patients and 77 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. UC patients were categorized into active and inactive groups based on the Mayo score. The Mayo endoscopic subscore classified them into mild-to-moderate and severe UC groups.Results: The optimal cut-off values for diagnosing UC were 0.34 for MHR (85.7% sensitivity, 76.0% specificity, 88.9% positive predictive value, 70.4% negative predictive value) and 2.49 for NLR (66.1% sensitivity, 88.0% specificity, 92.5% positive predictive value, 53.7% negative predictive value). The optimal MHR and NLR cut-off values to differentiate between mild-to-moderate UC and severe UC were 0.38 (92.9% sensitivity, 56.6% specificity, 53.1% positive predictive value, 93.7% negative predictive value) and 3.46 (71.4% sensitivity, 88.7% specificity, 76.9% positive predictive value, 85.5% negative predictive value), respectively.Conclusion: NLR and MHR are simple yet effective biological predictors of disease activity in UC patients.Keywords: ulcerative colitis, monocyte/HDL ratio, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, disease activity

Differentially expressed mitochondrial autophagy gene (DEMGs) were screened in patients with KOA by differential expression analysis. The STRING website was used to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network among DEMGs. Molecular complex detection (MCODE) method in Cytoscape software was performed to identify hub DEMGs. Support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) method was used to construct the hub DEMG diagnosis model. Genes with diagnostic value were identified as biomarkers by plotting receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and Expression validation. CIBERSORT algorithm was used to calculate the proportion of 22 immune cells in each sample in the GSE114007 dataset. Finally, biomarker expression was verified by qPCR.Results: A total of 15 DEMGs were obtained and enrichment analyses showed that these DEMG strains were mainly enriched in the mitophagy-animal, shigellosis, autophagy-animal and FoxO signal pathways. The PPI network unveiled 13 DEMGs with interactions. In addition, 8 hub DEMGs (ULK1, CALCOCO2, MAP1LC3B, BNIP3L, GABARAPL1, BNIP3, FKBP8 and FOXO3) were obtained for KOA. And 5 model DEMGs (BNIP3L, BNIP3, MAP1LC3B, ULK1 and FOXO3) were screened. The ROC curves revealed that BNIP3 and FOXO3 has strong diagnostic value in these models of DEMG. Immune-infiltration and correlation analysis showed that BNIP3 and FOXO3 were significantly correlated with three different immune cells, including primary B cells, M0 macrophage and M2 macrophage. The cartilage tissue samples qPCR verification results show that FOXO3 and BNIP3 were all down-regulated in KOA (p < 0.01), and the validation results are consistent with the above analysis.Conclusion: BNIP3 and FOXO3 have been identified as biomarkers for the diagnosis of KOA, which might supply a new insight for the pathogenesis and treatment of KOA.Keywords: Gene Expression Omnibus, diagnostic, bioinformatics analysis, immune infiltration, biomarkers

However, the limited pharmacokinetics of conventional drugs in the lungs poses a clinical challenge. The emergence of different nano-formulations has been facilitated by advancements in nanotechnology. Inhaled nanomedicines exhibit better targeting and prolonged therapeutic effects. Although nano-formulations have great potential, they still present several unknown risks. Herein, we review the (1) physiological anatomy of the lungs and their biological barriers, (2) pharmacokinetics and toxicology of nanomaterial formulations in the lungs; (3) current nanomaterials that can be applied to the respiratory system and related design strategies, and (4) current applications of inhaled nanomaterials in treating respiratory disorders, vaccine design, and imaging detection based on the characteristics of different nanomaterials. Finally, (5) we analyze and summarize the challenges and prospects of nanomaterials for respiratory disease applications. We believe that nanomaterials, particularly inhaled nano-formulations, have excellent prospects for application in respiratory diseases. However, we emphasize that the simultaneous toxic side effects of biological nanomaterials must be considered during the application of these emerging medicines. This study aims to offer comprehensive guidelines and valuable insights for conducting research on nanomaterials in the domain of the respiratory system. Pregnant women who delivered at two tertiary referral hospitals from January 2013 to December 2022 and were ultimately pathologically diagnosed with placenta accreta spectrum were included. They were divided into three groups based on different placental locations (anterior, posterior, and lateral wall/fundus). The differences in prenatal diagnosis, clinical characteristics, and perinatal outcomes among the three groups were compared.Results: There were 115,470 deliveries in a ten-year period at the two hospitals, and 118 case patients were confirmed to have a pathologically diagnosed placenta accreta spectrum. The posterior placenta group had a lower rate of placenta previa (76.9% vs 94.9% vs 100%, p< 0.05) and a higher gestational age at delivery (36.4± 2.45 vs 34.91± 1.76 vs 34.31± 3.41, p< 0.05) compared to the other two groups. The anterior placenta group had a significantly higher rate of invasive (increta/percreta) form placenta accreta spectrum (81.4% vs 36.5% vs 28.6%, p< 0.05) and planned cesarean section (96.6% vs 80.8% vs 71.4%, p< 0.05) compared to the other two groups. In terms of prenatal diagnosis, the anterior placenta group had a significantly higher rate of placenta accreta spectrum prenatal suspicion rate compared to the other two groups (86.4% vs 36.5% vs 57.1%, p< 0.05). The posterior placenta group had a lower rate of preoperative abdominal aortic balloon placement compared to the other two groups (5.8% vs 28.8% vs 28.6%, p< 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences among the three groups in primary perinatal outcomes, though the anterior placenta group had a longer postoperative hospital stay.Conclusion: The prenatal diagnosis rate and proportion of invasive form of placenta accreta spectrum occurring in non-anterior placenta are relatively lower than anterior placenta. Sixty-seven cases developed DVT within one month after delivery (DVT group), while 109 cases did not experience DVT (NDVT group). Within 24 hours after cesarean section, fasting coagulation indicators are measured. Coagulation system analysis was performed using the STA-R Evolution fully automated coagulation analyzer.Results: The women who developed DVT were found to be older, had a higher proportion of women with previous childbirth experiences, and had a higher proportion of women with comorbidities. Our results revealed significant differences in the levels of activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time between the NDVT group and the DVT group. In contrast, the DVT group displayed significantly higher levels of D-dimer, plasma fibrinogen and platelet count when compared to the NDVT group. The AUC for the combined test model was substantially higher compared to individual parameters.Discussion: Multiple parameters of the postoperative coagulation state in the combined test model provided a more accurate prediction of DVT occurrence in elderly pregnant women after cesarean section.Keywords: deep vein thrombosis, cesarean section, coagulation, postpartum women

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are recognized to play an important role in leukocyte migration in airway inflammation. Herein, efforts were made to confirm the expression levels of MMPs/TIMPs and study the relationship between the infiltration of inflammatory cells and local expression levels of MMPs/TIMPs in NPs.Patients and Methods: NP tissues were obtained from 42 Chinese patients with bilateral nasal polyps during the endoscopic sinus surgery. Inferior turbinate (IT) tissues from 19 patients with septal deviation were taken during the rhinoplasty surgery as controls. mRNA and protein levels of MMP1, MMP9, MMP10, MMP12, TIMP1 and TIMP3 were assessed by quantitative PCR and immunohistochemistry.Results: Eosinophilia (72%, 23/32 samples), neutrophilia (41%, 13/32 samples), and increase in macrophages (38%, 12/32 samples) were found in NP tissues. mRNA expression of MMP1 (10.9-fold), MMP9 (4.1-fold), MMP10 (6.7-fold) and MMP12 (3.5-fold) were significantly up-regulated, while TIMP1 (1.5-fold) and TIMP3 (6.0-fold) were significantly down-regulated in NPs (n=42) as compared to the controls (n=19). The immunostaining levels of all 4 MMPs and two TIMPs were higher in NPs than those in controls. The co-localization of MMP1/MMP10/MMP12 and macrophages were identified in NPs. MMP9 was mainly expressed in neutrophils, while TIMP1 or TIMP3 were mostly found in eosinophils in NPs.Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that tissue remodeling is significant in NPs, where MMPs/TIMPs play important roles in both tissue remodeling and inflammatory cells infiltration.Keywords: remodeling, inflammatory cells, extracellular matrix, matrix metalloproteinases

This study examined the network structures of NSSI and depressive symptoms in adolescents.Methods: Participants were recruited in the psychiatric outpatient clinics of three tertiary hospitals between April 10 and July 10, 2023. All participants been already found with self-injury behaviors in outpatient when enrolled. NSSI diagnostic criteria and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were utilized to collect NSSI and depressive symptoms separately. We performed a network analysis to visualize the correlation between each symptom and to identify core and bridging symptoms in comorbidities.Results: A total of 248 patients were enrolled in the study, with a mean age of 15.48 (SD = 1.62). Based on the PHQ-9 scores and grades, our results showed that the incidence of depression in adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury behavior was relatively high (N=235, 94.76%), with the majority having severe depression. The network analysis revealed that nodes D-6 “feeling bad, failing or letting yourself or your family down”, D-1 “little interest or pleasure” and D-4 “feeling tired” were the most vital and most central symptoms. The most crucial bridging symptom is the node NSSI-8 “frequent thinking about self-injury”, which connects the NSSI to the depression comorbid network.Conclusion: This study offers a significant symptom-level conceptualization of the association between NSSI and depressive symptoms in a clinical sample of adolescents, which not only enhances our understanding of the comorbid but also identifies potential treatment targets to prevent and treat comorbidity between adolescent NSSI and depression.Keywords: non-suicidal self-injury, depression, comorbidity network, bridge symptoms, network analysis

It is urgent to improve the sensitivity of radioresistant tumors to radiotherapy. In this work, gadolinium oxide nanocrystals (GONs) were utilized as radiosensitizers to enhance the killing effect and reinforce the immune activation of X-ray irradiation on 4T1 breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.Methods: 1.0 T small animal MR imaging (MRI) system was employed to trace GONs in vivo, while 225 kVp X-ray irradiation equipment was utilized for investigating the radiosensitization of GONs in 4T1 breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Western blot, quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, clonal survival assay, flow cytometry and reactive oxygen species assay were used to explore the biological mechanism of GON sensitization.Results: GONs exhibited exceptional utility as contrast agents for both in vivo and in vitro MRI imaging. Interestingly, a single dose of 8.0 Gy X-rays together with GONs failed to confer superior therapeutic effects in tumor-bearing mice, while only 3.0 Gy × 3 fractions X-rays combined with GONs exhibited effective tumor growth inhibition. Moreover, fractionated X-ray irradiation with GONs demonstrated a superior capacity to activate the cGAS-STING pathway.Discussion: Fractionated X-ray irradiation in the presence of GONs has demonstrated the most significant activation of the anti-tumor immune response by boosting the cGAS-STING pathway. Electroacupuncture (EA) is an effective traditional Chinese medicine treatment for PSD, which is widely used in clinical settings. EA has a significant therapeutic effect against PSD, but the mechanism is still unclear. This study aimed to determine whether EA ameliorates depression-like behaviors in PSD rats by regulating the adenosine 5’-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated mitochondrial function.Methods: Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) were used to develop a PSD rat model. To elucidate the role of AMPK in EA treatment, compound C, a selective inhibitor of AMPK, was injected into the lateral ventricle of rats before EA treatment. EA treatment was performed for 14 consecutive days for 30 min per day after PSD modeling. A modified Zea-Longa five-point scale scoring system was used to determine neurologic function in MCAO rats. Behavioral tests were conducted to evaluate depression-like phenotypes in rats. Depression-like behaviors were tested by sucrose preference test (SPT), novelty suppressed feeding test (NSFT), and open-field test (OFT). The structure and morphology of the prefrontal cortex were observed by histopathological hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Nissl staining. The mitochondrial morphology and function were analyzed by colorimetry, chemiluminescence, Western blotting, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).Results: EA treatment successfully ameliorated depression-like behaviors, upregulated AMPK expression, and improved mitochondrial function. However, AMPK inhibition by Compound C exacerbated depression-like behaviors and aggravated neuronal and mitochondrial injury in PSD rats.Conclusion: EA treatment improved depression-like behaviors in PSD rats and promoted mitochondrial function by activating AMPK.Keywords: electroacupuncture, post-stroke depression, mitochondria, AMPK

Abstract

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to \pi$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_\pi$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for the decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters of charmed and bottom mesons and baryons. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. We consider nucleon matrix elements, and review the determinations of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal. Abstract

Quasi-periodic Pedestal Burst Instabilities (PBIs), featuring alternative turbulence suppression and bursts, have been clearly identified by various edge diagnostics during I-mode to H-mode transition in the EAST Tokamak. The radial distribution of the phase perturbation caused by PBI shows that PBI is localized in the pedestal. Prior to each PBI, a significant increase of density gradient close to the pedestal top can be clearly distinguished, then the turbulence burst is generated, accompanied by the relaxation of the density profile, and then induces an outward particle flux. The relative density perturbation caused by PBIs is about $6 \sim 8\%$. Statistic analyses show that the pedestal normalized density gradient triggering the first PBI has a threshold value, mostly in the range of $22 \sim 24$, suggesting that a PBI triggering instability could be driven by the density gradient. And the pedestal normalized density gradient triggering the last PBI is about $30 \sim 40$ and seems to increase with the loss power and the chord-averaged density. In addition, the frequency of PBI is likely to be inversely proportional to the chord-averaged density and the loss power. These results suggest that PBIs and the density gradient prompt increase prior to PBIs can be considered as the precursor for controlling I-H transition.

The severity of emphysema was evaluated by determining the mean linear intercept (MLI) and destructive index (DI) from lung sections. The proportions of myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) and Th1, Th17, and Treg cells in the blood, spleen, and lungs were determined via flow cytometry. The levels of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17, interferon (IFN)-γ, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β were detected via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Ifnγ, IL17a, Rorγt and Foxp3 transcription levels were detected via polymerase chain reaction.Results: CD40+ mDCs accumulated in the lungs of EP-stimulated mice. Abstract

In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO$_2$ plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the $x$-$y$ scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with doping- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along $x$ and $y$ can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. Abstract

Lattice distortion due to octahedral rotation and distortion are high focussed, and it produces profound effect on a material's properties, such as its bandgap, magnetism and optical properties etc. Rutile-type \b{eta}-MnO2 is a wide used non-Perovskite magnetic material with octahedrons. We systematically studied its stability, electronic structures, magnetic structures, and optical properties within 0-100 GPa with density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the competition between bondlength and bonding angle leads its bandgap enlarging or shrinking within in the Pnnm phase with increasing pressure, because of the interaction of Mn-d and O-p states. We also find same pressure indused bandgap evolutions in the Pnnm phases of SiO2, GeO2, SnO2 and PbO2. The different ways of octahedral connection in Pnnm phase and Pa-3 phase leads to an interesting pressure-induced bandgap enlarging. And in the Pa-3 phase, the band gap can be tuned to 1.34 eV by pressure to meet the Shockley-Queisser limit. Moreover the two high pressure phases can be quenched to ambient pressure. Together with its mechanical, optical and antiferromagnetic properties, it ensures MnO2's application as a photovoltaic material for all working condition with multi-purpose. This study extends MnO2's application and give some new mechanism of pressure induced bandgap enlargement.

Abstract

The k-filtering/wave telescope method has been successfully applied to the four-spacecraft measurements from Cluster II and MMS, revealing the four-dimensional power spectral density $\textrm{PSD}(\omega, \mathbf k)$. As the number of spacecraft within a constellation increases, the geometry becomes more complicated, and it is harder to find the first-Brillouin-like zone, since we cannot use known formulas to calculate the geometry of the zone. To our knowledge, a quantitative study on the aliasing effects as well as the geometry of the first-Brillouin-like zone for the constellation with more than 4 spacecraft has not been proposed yet. Herewith we provide a method to estimate and compare the geometry of the first-Brillouin-like zone in multi-spacecraft constellations. The corresponding array of reciprocal lattice in the wavevector space forms the Brillouin zone. We set the preset PSDs conforming to the ``slab-only' and ``slab + 2D' patterns as the benchmark, and compare them with the reconstructed PSDs using 4, 5, and 9 virtual spacecraft. Our results validates the estimation of the Brillouin-like zones. The method may provide a constraint of aliasing effects. Abstract

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic Kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn6Sn6, a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic Kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and ascribe this feature to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Our observation supports the existence of topological Dirac magnons in both the commensurate collinear and incommensurate coplanar magnetic orders, which is further corroborated by symmetry analysis. This finding places YMn6Sn6 as a promising candidate for room-temperature magnon spintronics applications.

Abstract

A reproducible stationary improved confinement mode (I-mode) has been achieved recently in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, featuring good confinement without particle transport barrier, which could be beneficial to solving the heat flux problem caused by edge localized modes (ELM) and the helium ash problem for future fusion reactors. The microscopic mechanism of sustaining stationary I-mode, based on the coupling between turbulence transition and the edge temperature oscillation, has been discovered for the first time. A radially localized edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO) with azimuthally symmetric structure ($n=0$,$m=0$) has been identified and it is caused by alternative turbulence transitions between ion temperature gradient modes (ITG) and trapped electron modes (TEM). The ITG-TEM transition is controlled by local electron temperature gradient and consistent with the gyrokinetic simulations. The self-organizing system consisting with ETRO, turbulence and transport transitions plays the key role in sustaining the I-mode confinement. These results provide a novel physics basis for accessing, maintaining and controlling stationary I-mode in the future., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

87. Observations of atmospheric Hg species and depositions in remote areas of China

Abstract

From September 2007, we conducted continuous measurements of speciated atmospheric mercury (Hg) and atmospheric mercury depositions at five remote sites in China. Four of these sites were involved in the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) as ground-based stations. These stations were located in the northwest, southwest, northeast, and east part of China, respectively, which represent the regional atmospheric Hg budgets in different areas of China. The preliminary results showed that mean TGM concentrations were in the range of 1.60 – 2.88 ng m-3, with relatively higher levels observed at sites in Eastern China and Southwestern China and lower levels at sites in Northeastern and Northwestern China. TGM concentrations at remote sites of China were also higher than those reported from background sites in North America and Europe, and this is corresponding very well with the Chinese great anthropogenic Hg emissions. Gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) and particulate bounded mercury (PBM) were in the ranges of 3.2 – 7.4 pg m−3 and 19.4 – 43.5 pg m-3, respectively. The preliminary result on precipitation showed mean precipitation THg concentrations were in the range of 2.7 – 18.0 ng L-1.

88. Mercury speciation and mobility in mine wastes from mercury mines in China

Abstract

Mine wastes calcines were formed through retorting of cinnabar ores at high temperature, which are considered as significant sources of mercury (Hg) contamination to the local environment. To better understand the role of mine waste in Hg geochemical cycle in Hg mining areas, Hg speciation and mobility were evaluated in mine waste calcines and waste rocks from 9 Hg mines in China. The total mercury (THg) concentrations in the mine wastes ranged from 0.369 to 2620 mg·kg-1 and varied widely in different Hg mines. Cinnabar and Hg0 are dominant forms in the mine wastes. The calcines had significant higher Hg2+ and Hg0 concentrations than the waste rocks, which indicated the retorting process can produce large amounts of secondary by-product Hg compounds. The leaching experiment confirmed mine wastes were important Hg pollution sources to local aquatic system. The mine wastes are also significant Hg sources to the atmosphere.

Abstract

Twenty heavy metals in the ground surface dust and agricultural soil in three different areas, i.e., a former artisanal zinc smelting area, a medium-scale zinc smelting area, and a control area, in Guizhou province southwest China, were investigated to reveal the pollution status of these heavy metals. The results showed that the pollution was most serious in the artisanal zinc smelting area, followed by the medium-scale zinc smelting area, while the control area was relatively clean. Zinc smelting activities had caused environmental contamination for elements such as Ag, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, In, Pb, Sb, Sn, Zn. Whereas, Co, Cr, Ga, Mo, Ni, Sc, Th, Tl, V were in the natural levels, hinting they were irrelevant to the zinc smelting activities. Concentrations of most heavy metals that come from the zinc smelting were obviously higher in the ground surface dust than that in the agricultural soil. And Cd, Pb, Zn, Ag were the four elements that affected by the zinc smelting activities most.

Abstract

Twelve hours integrated PM2.5 samples collected with a Weekly Air Particulate Sampler (URG Model 2000-01J) from September 2008 to November 2008 in Guiyang, China, were analyzed on the Kevex energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (XRF) for elements. Monitoring results found elevated concentrations of heavy metals (Ti, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Pb) in PM2.5 in Guiyang. The average concentrations were 30±22 ng m-3 for Ti, 250±400 ng m-3 for Mn, 340±280 ng m-3 for Fe, 290±330 ng m-3 for Zn, and 130±130 ng m-3 for Pb, respectively. Temporal variation patterns in the resulting data were also obtained. It is hypothesized that local anthropogenic sources and the seasonal variability result in the temporal variability.

92. Enhanced orbital anisotropy through the proximity to a SrTi O3 layer in the perovskite iridate superlattices

Abstract

We have used angle-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the O K edge and first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structures of iridate-based superlattices (SrIrO3)m/(SrTiO3) (m=1, 2, 3, and ∞). We focus on the pre-edge Ir 5d t2g-O 2p orbital hybridization feature in the XAS spectra. By varying the measurement geometry relative to the incident photon polarization, we are able to extract the dichroic contrast and observe the systematic increase in the anisotropy of Ir 5d orbitals as m decreases. First-principles calculations elucidate the orbital anisotropy coming mainly from the enhanced out-of-plane compression of IrO6 octahedra in the SrIrO3 layers that are adjacent to the inserted SrTiO3 layers. As m decreases, the increased volume fraction of these interfacial SrIrO3 layers and their contact with the SrTiO3 layers within the (SrIrO3)m/(SrTiO3) supercell lead to enhanced orbital anisotropy. Furthermore, the tilt and rotation of IrO6 octahedra are shown to be essential to understand the subtle orbital anisotropy in these superlattices, and constraining these degrees of freedom will give an incorrect trend. Our results demonstrate that the structural constraint from the inserted SrTiO3 layers, in addition to other electronic means such as polar interface and charge transfer, can serve as a knob to control the orbital degree of freedom in these iridate-based superlattices.

93. Triggering mechanism and material transfer of a failed solar filament eruption

Abstract

Soar filament eruptions are often associated with solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are the major impacts on space weather. However, the fine structures and the trigger mechanisms of solar filaments are still unclear. To address these issues, we studied a failed solar active-region filament eruption associated with a C-class flare by using high-resolution H$\alpha$ images from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST), supplemented by EUV observations of the Solar Dynamical Observatory (SDO). Before the filament eruption, a small bi-pole magnetic field emerged below the filament. And then magnetic reconnection between the filament and the emerging bi-pole magnetic field triggered the filament eruption. During the filament eruption, the untwisting motion of the filament can be clearly traced by the eruptive threads. Moreover, the foot-points of the eruptive threads are determined by tracing the descending filament materials. Note that the filament twisted structure and the right part of the eruptive filament threads cannot be seen before the filament eruption. These eruptive threads at the right part of the filament are found to be rooting in the weak negative polarities near the main negative sunspot. Moreover, a new filament formed in the filament channel due to material injection from the eruptive filament. The above observations and the potential field extrapolations are inclined to support that the filament materials were transferred into the overlying magnetic loops and the nearby filament channel by magnetic reconnection. Abstract

As a typical transition-metal chalcogenide material, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received tremendous attention because of its unique layered structure and versatile chemical, electronic, and optical properties. With the focus of this Perspective on the energy storage area, one of the most important contributions of MoS2 is that it sparked the birth of the rechargeable lithium battery in the early 1980s, which later formed the foundation of commercial lithium batteries. After four decades, admitting that MoS2 is still playing a significant role in the lithium-ion battery field and considerable effort was made to decipher the mechanism through ex situ and in situ studies and by means of MoS2 nanostructure engineering that advances the lithium battery performance, it is also used in beyond lithium-ion batteries, such as sodium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum energy storage systems. Such alternative battery systems are desirable because of the safety concerns of lithium and the depletion of lithium reserves and corresponding increase in cost. In this Perspective, recent development on the fabrication of novel MoS2 nanostructures was discussed, followed by the scrutinization of their application in beyond lithium-ion batteries and the in situ/operando methods involved in these studies. Abstract

The van der Waals (vdW) chromium trihalides (CrX3) exhibit field-tunable, two-dimensional magnetic orders that vary with the halogen species and the number of layers. Their magnetic ground states with proximity in energies are sensitive to the degree of ligand-metal (p-d) hybridization and relevant modulations in the Cr d-orbital interactions. We use soft X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy at Cr L-edge along with the atomic multiplet simulations to determine the key energy scales such as the crystal field 10 Dq and interorbital Coulomb interactions under different ligand metal charge transfer (LMCT) in CrX3 (X= Cl, Br, and I). Through this systematic study, we show that our approach compared to the literature has yielded a set of more reliably determined parameters for establishing a base Hamiltonian for CrX3.

98. Dynamic electron correlations with charge order wavelength along all directions in the copper oxide plane

Abstract

In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO2 plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the x-y scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with doping- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along x and y can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. We discuss how the combination of short- and long-range Coulomb interactions results in an effective non-monotonic potential that may determine the quasi-circular pattern.
