Abstract

Pump-probe spectroscopy is central for exploring ultrafast dynamics of fundamental excitations, collective modes and energy transfer processes. Typically carried out using conventional diffraction-limited optics, pump-probe experiments inherently average over local chemical, compositional, and electronic inhomogeneities. Here we circumvent this deficiency and introduce pump-probe infrared spectroscopy with ~20 nm spatial resolution, far below the diffraction limit, which is accomplished using a scattering scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). This technique allows us to investigate exfoliated graphene single-layers on SiO2 at technologically significant mid-infrared (MIR) frequencies where the local optical conductivity becomes experimentally accessible through the excitation of surface plasmons via the s-SNOM tip. Optical pumping at near-infrared (NIR) frequencies prompts distinct changes in the plasmonic behavior on 200 femtosecond (fs) time scales. The origin of the pump-induced, enhanced plasmonic response is identified as an increase in the effective electron temperature up to several thousand Kelvin, as deduced directly from the Drude weight associated with the plasmonic resonances., Comment: 27 pages (including Supporting Information), 8 figures

Abstract

We characterized plasmon propagation in graphene on thin films of the high-κ dielectric PbZr0.3Ti0.7O3 (PZT). Significant modulation (up to ±75%) of the plasmon wavelength was achieved with application of ultrasmall voltages (< ±1 V) across PZT. Analysis of the observed plasmonic fringes at the graphene edge indicates that carriers in graphene on PZT behave as noninteracting Dirac Fermions approximated by a semiclassical Drude response, which may be attributed to strong dielectric screening at the graphene/PZT interface. Additionally, significant plasmon scattering occurs at the grain boundaries of PZT from topographic and/or polarization induced graphene conductivity variation in the interior of graphene, reducing the overall plasmon propagation length. Lastly, through application of 2 V across PZT, we demonstrate the capability to persistently modify the plasmonic response of graphene through transient voltage application.

Abstract

We report on infrared (IR) nanoscopy of 2D plasmon excitations of Dirac fermions in graphene. This is achieved by confining mid-IR radiation at the apex of a nanoscale tip: an approach yielding two orders of magnitude increase in the value of in-plane component of incident wavevector q compared to free space propagation. At these high wavevectors, the Dirac plasmon is found to dramatically enhance the near-field interaction with mid-IR surface phonons of SiO2 substrate. Abstract

We analyze the results of scanning near-field infrared spectroscopy performed on thin films of a-SiO2 on Si substrate. The measured near-field signal exhibits surface-phonon resonances whose strength has a strong thickness dependence in the range from 2 to 300 {nm}. These observations are compared with calculations in which the tip of the near-field infrared spectrometer is modeled either as a point dipole or an elongated spheroid. The latter model accounts for the antenna effect of the tip and gives a better agreement with the experiment. Possible applications of the near-field technique for depth profiling of layered nanostructures are discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report on time-resolved mid-infrared (mid-IR) near-field spectroscopy of the narrow bandgap semiconductor InAs. The dominant effect we observed pertains to the dynamics of photoexcited carriers and associated surface plasmons. A novel combination of pump-probe techniques and near-field nanospectroscopy accesses high momentum plasmons and demonstrates efficient, subpicosecond photomodulation of the surface plasmon dispersion with subsequent tens of picoseconds decay under ambient conditions. The photoinduced change of the probe intensity due to plasmons in InAs is found to exceed that of other mid-IR or near-IR media by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Remarkably, the required control pulse fluence is as low as 60 μJ/cm(2), much smaller than fluences of ∼ 1-10 mJ/cm(2) previously utilized in ultrafast control of near-IR plasmonics. These low excitation densities are easily attained with a standard 1.56 μm fiber laser. Thus, InAs--a common semiconductor with favorable plasmonic properties such as a low effective mass--has the potential to become an important building block of optically controlled plasmonic devices operating at infrared frequencies.

Abstract

Knowledge of an animal's chronological age is crucial for understanding and predicting population demographics, survival and reproduction, but accurate age determination for many wild animals remains challenging. Previous methods to estimate age require invasive procedures, such as tooth extraction to analyse growth layers, which are difficult to carry out with large, mobile animals such as cetaceans. However, recent advances in epigenetic methods have opened new avenues for precise age determination. These ‘epigenetic clocks’ present a less invasive alternative and can provide age estimates with unprecedented accuracy. Here, we present a species-specific epigenetic clock based on skin tissue samples for a population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in Shark Bay, Western Australia. We measured methylation levels at 37,492 cytosine-guanine sites (CpG sites) in 165 samples using the mammalian methylation array. Chronological age estimates with an accuracy of ±1 year were available for 68 animals as part of a long-term behavioral study of this population. Using these samples with known age, we built an elastic net model with Leave-One-Out-Cross-Validation, which retained 43 CpG sites, providing an r = 0.86 and median absolute age error (MAE) = 2.1 years (5% of maximum age). This model was more accurate for our data than the previously published methylation clock based on skin samples of common bottlenose dolphins (T. truncatus: r = 0.83, MAE = 2.2) and the multi-species odontocete methylation clock (r = 0.68, MAE = 6.8), highlighting that species-specific clocks can have superior performance over those of multi-species assemblages. We further developed an epigenetic sex estimator, predicting sex with 100% accuracy. Abstract

One-dimensional carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are promising for future applications in nanoelectronics and nanophotonics due to their unique characteristics such as topological edge states, chirality, and quantum confinement. Despite the chemical unzipping method of producing GNRs from CNTs, using energetic photons to control light–matter interaction and shape materials at the nanoscale has great promise, especially for chemical-free and on-demand manufacturing. Here, we exploit the high electromagnetic field from a Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser to interact with CNTs, causing ultrafast energy transfer between the photons and the nanotubes and converting them to GNRs and carbon nanocrystals. Probed with scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy, the nanoribbons are identified as semiconducting and/or insulating, a strikingly different electronic phase compared with the original metallic CNTs. Our method of employing high-field and nonequilibrium processes with an ultrafast laser to alter the shape and transform the electronic properties is scalable, does not necessitate high-temperature processes, and is highly spatially controllable—conditions that pave the way for manufacturing nanoscale hybrid materials and devices. Abstract

AimsTo investigate whether reduction in opioid use differs when treated by either buprenorphine-naloxone (BUP) or methadone (MET) among adults with comorbid opioid use disorder (OUD) and mental disorders.Design, setting and participantsIn a randomized controlled trial, adults with OUD were randomized to 24 weeks of either BUP or MET treatment and were followed up in 3-yearly assessments. The present secondary analyses were based on 597 participants who completed all assessments.MeasurementsThe outcome measure was the number of days of using opioids per month during the follow-up period. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) was used to classify participants into three groups: life-time mood disorder (n = 302), life-time mental disorder other than mood disorder (n = 114) and no mental disorder (n = 181). Medication treatment (BUP, MET, no treatment) during the follow-up period was a time-varying predictor.FindingsBased on zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) mixed regression analysis, it was found that relative to no treatment, opioid use during the follow-up was significantly reduced by BUP [odds ratio (OR) = 0.12, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.07-0.21 for any use; risk ratio (RR) = 0.77, 95% CI =0.66-0.89 for days of use] and by MET [OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.25-0.45 for any use; RR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.72-0.84 for days of use]. Abstract

This dissertation presents infrared nano-spectroscopy and nano-imaging studies of graphene plasmons using scattering -type scanning near-field microscope - a unique technique allowing efficient excitation and high-resolution imaging of graphene plasmons. With this technique, we show in real space that common graphene/SiO₂/Si back-gated structure support propagating surface plasmons in the infrared frequencies. The observed plasmons are highly confined surface modes with a wavelength around 200 nm that are conveniently tunable by the back gate voltages. In addition, we perform spectroscopic studies on graphene by varying the probing frequencies. The spectroscopy results not only show direct signature of graphene plasmons but also provide evidence of strong coupling between graphene plasmons and SiO₂ optical phonons. Furthermore, we investigate the plasmonic properties of bernal-stacking bilayer graphene (BLG) and find that BLG supports gate- tunable infrared plasmons with higher confinement compared to graphene and randomly stacked graphene layers. Moreover, BLG plasmons can be turned off completely in wide gate voltage close to the charge neutrality point. Those unique plasmonic properties are attributed to both interlayer tunneling and bandgap opening inBLG. Finally, we are able to map and characterize grain boundaries inside graphene film fabricated with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method by launching surface plasmons. We found grain boundaries, as well as other line defects in CVD graphene, trigger distinct plasmonic twin fringes patterns due to plasmon interference. Abstract

We investigated phonon-polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride - a naturally hyperbolic van der Waals material - by means of the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy. Real-space nanoimages we have obtained detail how the polaritons are launched when the light incident on a thin hexagonal boron nitride slab is scattered by various intrinsic and extrinsic inhomogeneities, including sample edges, metallic nanodisks deposited on its top surface, random defects, and surface impurities. The scanned tip of the near-field microscope is itself a polariton launcher whose efficiency proves to be superior to all the other types of polariton launchers we studied.
