We study the multi-spin entanglement for the 1D anisotropic XY model concentrating on the simplest case of three-spin entanglement. As compared to the pairwise entanglement, three-party quantum correlations have a longer range and they are more robust on increasing the temperature. We find regions of the phase diagram of the system where bound entanglement occurs, both at zero and finite temperature. Bound entanglement in the ground state can be obtained by tuning the magnetic field. An electron-cooling principle based on Landau quantization is proposed for nanoscale conductor systems. Operation relies on energy-selective electron tunneling into a two-dimensional electron gas in quantizing magnetic fields. This quantum refrigerator provides significant cooling power (~1 nW at a few K for realistic parameters) and offers a unique flexibility thanks to its tunability via the magnetic-field intensity. The available performance is only marginally affected by nonidealities such as disorder or imperfections in the semiconductor. A vortex in a superfluid gas inside an optical lattice can behave as a massive particle moving in a periodic potential and exhibiting quantum properties. In this Letter we discuss these properties and show that the excitation of vortex motions in a two-dimensional lattice can lead to striking measurable changes in its dynamic response. It would be possible by means of Bragg spectroscopy to carry out the first direct measurement of the effective vortex mass, the pinning to the underlying lattice, and the dissipative damping., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

The behavior of a charge shuttle under a pure AC field has been recently considered theoretically and experimentally. If the system presents an asymmetry in the tunneling amplitudes the device acts as a nano-electromechanical rectifier, transforming a pure AC voltage field into a direct curren. In this paper we first review the model and the appearance of the rectifying effect for bias voltages below the threshold of self-oscillation. We discuss in some details the dynamics of the central island that, like the current, presents strong dependence on the forcing AC field frequency. In presence of both a constant and a small oscillating bias voltage we analyze the transition from the static to self-oscillating solution. We then consider current fluctuations (full counting statistics) for periodic motion of the grain. We explicitly evaluate the current noise numerically and we find that it shows clear signatures of correlated transport at certain locking frequencies. In the adiabatic limit we obtain a simple expression for the full-counting statistics and calculate explicitly the first four moments., Comment: 16 pages, 7 Figures. In this paper we report a relaxation-induced suppression of the noise for a single level quantum dot coupled to an oscillator with incoherent dynamics in the sequential tunneling regime. It is shown that relaxation induces qualitative changes in the transport properties of the dot, depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling and on the applied voltage. In particular, critical thresholds in voltage and relaxation are found such that a suppression below 1/2 of the Fano factor is possible. Additionally, the current is either enhanced or suppressed by increasing relaxation, depending on bias being greater or smaller than the above threshold. For the anisotropic XY model in transverse magnetic field, we analyze the ground state and its concurrence-free point for generic anisotropy, and the time evolution of initial Bell states created in a fully polarized background and on the ground state. We find that the pairwise entanglement propagates with a velocity proportional to the reduced interaction for all the four Bell states. A transmutation from singlet-like to triplet-like states is observed during the propagation. Characteristic for the anisotropic models is the instantaneous creation of pairwise entanglement from a fully polarized state; furthermore, the propagation of pairwise entanglement is suppressed in favor of a creation of different types of entanglement. The ``entanglement wave'' evolving from a Bell state on the ground state turns out to be very localized in space-time. A solid-state cooling principle based on magnetic-field-driven tunable suppression of Andreev reflection in superconductor/two-dimensional electron gas nanostructures is proposed. This cooling mechanism can lead to very large heat fluxes per channel up to 10^4 times greater than currently achieved with superconducting tunnel junctions. This efficacy and its availability in a two-dimensional electron system make this method of particular relevance for the implementation of quantum nanostructures operating at cryogenic temperatures., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published version

By means of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm we study the zero-temperature dynamics of the Von Neumann entropy of a block of spins in a Heisenberg chain after a sudden quench in the anisotropy parameter. In the absence of any disorder the block entropy increases linearly with time and then saturates. We analyze the velocity of propagation of the entanglement as a function of the initial and final anisotropies and compare, wherever possible, our results with those obtained by means of Conformal Field Theory. We show that very large negative magnetoresistance can be obtained in magnetic trilayers in a current-in-plane geometry owing to the existence of crossed Andreev reflection. This spin-valve consists of a thin superconducting film sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers whose magnetization is allowed to be either parallelly or antiparallelly aligned. For a suitable choice of structure parameters and nearly fully spin-polarized ferromagnets the magnetoresistance can exceed -80%. Fully frustrated one-dimensional diamond Josephson chains have been shown [B. Dou\c{c}ot and J. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 227005 (2002)] to posses a remarkable property: The superfluid phase occurs through the condensation of pairs of Cooper pairs. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we analyze quantitatively the Insulator to $4e$-Superfluid transition. We determine the location of the critical point and discuss the behaviour of the phase-phase correlators. Non Abelian geometric phases are attracting increasing interest because of possible experimental application in quantum computation. We study the effects of the environment (modelled as an ensemble of harmonic oscillators) on a holonomic transformation and write the corresponding master equation. The solution is analytically and numerically investigated and the behavior of the fidelity analyzed: fidelity revivals are observed and an optimal finite operation time is determined at which the gate is most robust against noise., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

In this paper we study the quantum phase transition between the insulating and the globally coherent superfluid phases in the Bose-Hubbard model with T_3 structure, the "dice lattice". Even in the absence of any frustration the superfluid phase is characterized by modulation of the order parameter on the different sublattices of the T_3 structure. The zero-temperature critical point as a function of a magnetic field shows the characteristic "butterfly" form. At fully frustration the superfluid region is strongly suppressed. In addition, due to the existence of the Aharonov-Bohm cages at f=1/2, we find evidence for the existence of an intermediate insulating phase characterized by a zero superfluid stiffness but finite compressibility. In this intermediate phase bosons are localized due to the external frustration and the topology of the T_3 lattice. We name this new phase the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) insulator. In the presence of charge frustration the phase diagram acquires the typical lobe-structure. The form and hierarchy of the Mott insulating states with fractional fillings, is dictated by the particular topology of the T_3 lattice. The results presented in this paper were obtained by a variety of analytical methods: mean-field and variational techniques to approach the phase boundary from the superconducting side, and a strongly coupled expansion appropriate for the Mott insulating region. In addition we performed Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the corresponding (2+1)D XY model to corroborate the analytical calculations with a more accurate quantitative analysis. Some thermodynamical properties of solids, such as heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility, have recently been shown to be linked to the amount of entanglement in a solid. However this entanglement may appear a mere mathematical artifact of the typical symmetrization procedure of many-body wave function in solid state physics. Here we show that this entanglement is physical demonstrating the principles of its extraction from a typical solid state system by scattering two particles off the system. Moreover we show how to simulate this process using present-day optical lattices technology. Electrostatic control of the magnetization of a normal mesoscopic conductor is analyzed in a hybrid superconductor-normal-superconductor system. This effect stems from the interplay between the non-equilibrium condition in the normal region and the Zeeman splitting of the quasiparticle density of states of the superconductor subjected to a static in-plane magnetic field. Unexpected spin-dependent effects such as magnetization suppression, diamagnetic-like response of the susceptibility as well as spin-polarized current generation are the most remarkable features presented. The shot noise in a quantum ring, connected to leads, is studied in the presence of electron interactions in the sequential tunneling regime. Two qualitatively different noise correlations with distinctly different behaviors are identified and studied in a large range of parameters. Noise in the total current is due to the discreteness of the electron charge and can become super-Poissonian as result of electron interaction. The noise in the magnetization current is comparatively insensitive to the interaction but can be greatly enhanced if population inversion of the angular states is assumed. In this paper we present an approach to quantum cloning with unmodulated spin networks. The cloner is realized by a proper design of the network and a choice of the coupling between the qubits. We show that in the case of phase covariant cloner the XY coupling gives the best results. In the 1->2 cloning we find that the value for the fidelity of the optimal cloner is achieved, and values comparable to the optimal ones in the general N->M case can be attained. If a suitable set of network symmetries are satisfied, the output fidelity of the clones does not depend on the specific choice of the graph. We show that spin network cloning is robust against the presence of static imperfections. Moreover, in the presence of noise, it outperforms the conventional approach. In this case the fidelity exceeds the corresponding value obtained by quantum gates even for a very small amount of noise. Furthermore we show how to use this method to clone qutrits and qudits. By means of the Heisenberg coupling it is also possible to implement the universal cloner although in this case the fidelity is 10% off that of the optimal cloner., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, published version

We introduce an approach to quantum cloning based on spin networks and we demonstrate that phase covariant cloning can be realized using no external control but only with a proper design of the Hamiltonian of the system. In the 1 -> 2 cloning we find that the XY model saturates the value for the fidelity of the optimal cloner and gives values comparable to it in the genera N -> M case. We finally discuss the effect of external noise. A high degree of quantum coherence is a crucial requirement for the implementation of quantum logic devices. Solid state nanodevices seem particularly promising from the point of view of integrability and flexibility in the design. However decoherence is a serious limitation, due to the presence of many types low energy excitations in the ``internal'' environment and of ``external'' sources due to the control circuitery. Here we study both kind of dephasing in a special implementation, the charge Josephson qubit, however many of our results are applicable to a large class of solid state qubits. This is the case of 1/f noise for which we introduce and study a model of an environment of bistable fluctuatiors. External sources of noise are analized in terms of a suitable harmonic oscillator environment and the explicit mapping on the spin boson model is presented. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the environment. For a fluctuator environment with 1/f spectrum memory effects turn out to be important. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more microscopic parameter of the environment. We analyze the effect of a quantum error correcting code on the entanglement of encoded logical qubits in the presence of a dephasing interaction with a correlated environment. Such correlated reservoir introduces entanglement between physical qubits. We show that for short times the quantum error correction interprets such entanglement as errors and suppresses it. A superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) transistor based on superconducting microcoolers is presented. The proposed 4-terminal device consists of a long SNS Josephson junction whose N region is in addition symmetrically connected to superconducting reservoirs through tunnel barriers (I). Biasing the SINIS line allows to modify the quasiparticle temperature in the weak link, thus controlling the Josephson current. We show that, in suitable voltage and temperature regimes, large supercurrent enhancements can be achieved with respect to equilibrium, due to electron ``cooling'' generated by the control voltage. The shot noise of a one-dimensional wire interrupted by two barriers shows interesting features related to the interplay between Coulomb blockade effects, Luttinger correlations and discrete excitations. At small bias the Fano factor reaches the lowest attainable value, 1/2, irrespective of the ratio of the two junction resistances. At larger voltages this asymmetry is power-law renormalized by the interaction strength. A promising scheme for electron microrefrigeration based on ferromagnet-superconductor contacts is presented. In this setup, cooling power densities up to 600 nW/$\mu$m$^2$ can be achieved leading to electronic temperature reductions largely exceeding those obtained with existing superconductor-normal metal tunnel contacts. In this Letter we discuss the entanglement near a quantum phase transition by analyzing the properties of the concurrence for a class of exactly solvable models in one dimension. We find that entanglement can be classified in the framework of scaling theory. We introduce a fully frustrated XY model with nearest neighbor (nn) and next nearest neighbor (nnn) couplings which can be realized in Josephson junction arrays. We study the phase diagram for $0\leq x \leq 1$ ($x$ is the ratio between nnn and nn couplings). When $x < 1/\sqrt{2}$ an Ising and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are present. Both critical temperatures decrease with increasing $x$. For $x > 1/\sqrt{2}$ the array undergoes a sequence of two transitions. On raising the temperature first the two sublattices decouple from each other and then, at higher temperatures, each sublattice becomes disorderd., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures
