An important challenge for conservation science is to detect declines in intraspecific diversity so that management action can be guided towards populations or species at risk. The lifespan of Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) exceeds 80 years, and human impacts on breeding habitat over the last half century may have impeded recruitment, leaving populations dominated by old postreproductive individuals, potentially resulting in a small and declining breeding population. Here, we conduct a “single-sample” evaluation of genetic erosion within contemporary populations of the Australian lungfish. Genetic erosion is a temporal decline in intraspecific diversity due to factors such as reduced population size and inbreeding. We examined whether young individuals showed signs of reduced genetic diversity and/or inbreeding using a novel bomb radiocarbon dating method to age lungfish nonlethally, based on 14C ratios of scales. A total of 15,201 single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) loci were genotyped in 92 individuals ranging in age from 2 to 77 years old. Standardized individual heterozygosity and individual inbreeding coefficients varied widely within and between riverine populations, but neither was associated with age, so perceived problems with recruitment have not translated into genetic erosion that could be considered a proximate threat to lungfish populations. Conservation concern has surrounded Australian lungfish for over a century. However, our results suggest that long-lived threatened species can maintain stable levels of intraspecific variability when sufficient reproductive opportunities exist over the course of a long lifespan. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Carbon mineralisation of ultramafic mine tailings can reduce net emissions of anthropogenic carbon dioxide by reacting Mg-silicate and hydroxide minerals with atmospheric CO2 to produce carbonate minerals. We investigate the controls on carbonate mineral formation at the derelict Woodsreef chrysotile mine (New South Wales, Australia). Quantitative XRD was used to understand how mineralogy changes with depth into the tailings pile, and shows that hydromagnesite [Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O], is present in shallow tailings material (<40?cm), while coalingite [Mg10Fe3+2(CO3)(OH)24·2H2O] and pyroaurite [Mg6Fe3+2(CO3)(OH)16·4H2O] are forming deeper in the tailings material. This indicates that there may be two geochemical environments within the upper ~1?m of the tailings, with hydromagnesite forming within the shallow tailings via carbonation of brucite in CO2-rich conditions, and pyroaurite and coalingite forming under more carbon limited conditions at depth. Radiogenic isotope results indicate hydromagnesite and pyroaurite have a modern (F14C > 0.8) atmospheric CO2 source. Laboratory-based anion exchange experiments, conducted to explore stable C isotope fractionation in pyroaurite, shows that pyroaurite d13C values change with carbon availability, and 13C-depleted signatures are typical of hydrotalcites in C-limited environments, such as the deep tailings at Woodsreef. Quantitative XRD and elemental C data estimates that Woodsreef absorbs between of 229.0–405.1?g CO2?m-2 y-1.

The Mediterranean Sea (MS), is extremely sensitive to rising sea-levels (SL) as attested by drowned archeological remains from the Roman Period [2]. Due to the absence of coral reefs, evidence for recent and Holocene SL change has so far mainly been restricted to coastal cores [1] archeological remains [2] and submerged speleothem deposits. Vermetid reefs are an extremely sensitive high resolution carbonate archive [3,4] and they are mainly formed in the lower intertidal zone by gregarious and sessile gastropods belonging to the genus Dendropoma (family Vermetidae). Since their interval of growth is restricted to the tidal zone, they can be used as precise SL proxies (about ±0.1 m in low range tidal areas).Here, we report new SL data covering two time-windows: between 2,380 and 1,520 years cal BP and during the last 300 yrs. These data have been obtained from two quasi-stable areas of the Western MS: S. Vito Lo Capo (N Sicily, Italy) and Cabo de Gata (SE Spain), opening new perspectives to understand the response of the global changes on this semienclosed basin

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling and surface texture mapping of the central California continental shelf, reveal a prominent subsurface reflector interpreted as a low stand erosion surface and an overlying mudbelt that covers 421 km2 of the mid-shelf in depths of 40-90 m. Radiometric and sedimentologic analyses of samples from vibracores taken along the seaward edge of the mudbelt show that initial deposition above the pre-Holocene erosion surface began ca. 14.5 ka. These data and model results of sea-level history, tectonics, and the Monterey Bay littoral sediment budget support the notion that the entire midshelf deposit was formed during the postglacial transgression. An alternative explanation, that <30% of the deposit is Holocene, requires that (1) sediment input is overestimated and/or loss is greatly underestimated, and (2) preservation on the shelf was significant despite deep and active wave scour observed in the form of rapid cliff and bedrock cutting early and late in the transgression. The difference between a basal age of ~14.5 ka and residence time of midshelf sediment (3,273 years), derived from dividing mudbelt volume by modern accumulation rate, implies: (1) significant sediment loss occurred since the mudbelt formed and/or (2) sediment accumulation has varied greatly over time. Although modern sediment budgets are relatively well constrained, it remains uncertain how well we can apply them to the past. An evolving model of sedimentation history explores the likelihood of changes in sediment supply, accumulation patterns, and depositional patterns owing to postglacial sea-level history and human land-use activities while providing important boundary conditions for modeling shoreface evolution., See also ADM002146.
