HIV/AIDS has severely affected many of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Southern and Eastern Africa where the epidemic is now concentrated. The United Nations and WHO are pursuing ambitious programmes of both HIV prevention and AIDS treatment To date there has been little examination of the impact of these programmes in the middle or longer tern (five to 25 years). This study has projected national populations under different scenarios of HIV prevalence, prevention and treatment for 2005-2030 for Botswana, Malawi and Tanzania. The population data is used to examine medical staff requirements, treatment costs and associated changes in food requirements. The projections demonstrate the need for effective prevention programmes in conceit with treatment Serious shortages of medical staff and inadequate financial resources are identified as bottlenecks to effective implementation of treatment in two of the three countries.
