This study aims to identify the antecedents of community identity, ensuring social well-being, a feeling of inclusiveness and a sense of belonging ensuring its core of existence. The study has been carried out in the famous Baliyatra which has immense importance from the cultural point of view. The study has taken the views of the participants who has visited post covid with a feeling of belongingness and cultural identify. The research hypotheses were tested with a sample of 379 participants attending the Baliyatra Festival held in Cuttack, Odisha, India. The results indicated that sense of belongingness and feeling of inclusion are crucial predictors of participants' level. The results are expected to assist festival planners in managing and designing festivals that can appeal to participants who make up a significant percentage of cultural festival market. This analysis of festival management before and during the COVID-19 pandemic focused on the Daramsiyao Festival, a local event in Daram, Samar, Philippines. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study identified the role and impact of the festival on its stakeholders and how management processes changed during the pandemic. To gather data, a content analysis of written festival documentation and Hybrid Focus Group Discussion (HFGD) with twelve (n = 12) Daram stakeholders were conducted, utilizing tabular reconnaissance and a semi-structured aide-mémoire. The information was assessed through a Repertory Grid and Thematic Network Analysis. Upon analyzing the stakeholders' collective and individual experiences, the findings suggested themes that explored the implications of the changing management practices, leading to the development of the SAYAW Framework on Sustainable Community-based Festival Management. The proposed intervention program titled: "Tayo'y MagSAYAW! (Let's Dance!)" was conceptualized to develop the festival management for future celebrations of the Daramsiyao Festival. The framework introduces five (5) main themes: Substratum, Adaptation, Yare Governance, Acclimation, and Workmanship. Through the comprehensive analysis of the festival subject, primary and secondary stakeholders could adapt to improve the related projects and activities. Despite the economic and academic importance of periodic hallmark festivals (PHFs) and customer experience, knowledge about the tourist experience (TX) in a PHF consumption context remains limited. In response, this research conceptualizes a novel "periodic hallmark festival tourist experience" (PHF-TX) construct and develops a measurement instrument. Findings from three empirical studies of PHF tourists confirmed six constituent perceived value dimensions of PHF-TX. Empirically, PHF-TX was positively associated with behavioral intentions and subjective wellbeing, with festival attachment playing a mediating role. Important theoretical and practical implications include heterogeneity with prior experience and an attenuated impact of PHF-TX in the proposed relationships, indicating that the relationship between PHF-TX and behavioral intention may differ between first-time and repeat PHF tourists. This finding suggests there may be a point on the perceived value spectrum where the benefits of PHF-TX increase at a decreasing rate. Çıldırlı Minstrel Festival XIX. He lived in the late 19th century and spent most of his life fighting Russian invasions. Âşık Şenlik composed the makam Çıldır/Şenlik/Şenlik/Şenlik Divanî, usually sung by Azeri and Karapapak minstrels. Many minstrels were influenced by Şenlik during his lifetime and in the following periods. The aim of this study is to prepare a bibliography of researches made in about Âşık Şenlik and his works in 1989-2023. The bibliography is classified into five groups as thesis, book, paper, article and others. The studies are listed alphabetically according to the surnames of the authors. Traditional festivals hold immense cultural and tourism value, but striking a balance between preservation and adaptation in the face of globalization is challenging. This study focuses on the Hmong New Year, the largest traditional festival in a prominent Hmong settlement in China. Through mixed research methods, it examines the impact of festival attachment and political trust on residents' attitudes toward festival tourism development. The results reveal the significant influence of festival attachment on residents' perception and judgment of festival tourism, with political trust playing a crucial moderating role. Successful repetition of festival activities fosters stable cognitive perceptions of festival tourism, outweighing potential risks. This research enhances our theoretical understanding of festivals and provides insights into the sustainable development of traditional Hmong festivals, offering support for studying traditional festivals in diverse cultural contexts. A total of n = 67 untrained attendants at an outreach science festival, online because of the COVID‐19 pandemic but usually held at bars, used pictures of the brand logos to evaluate eight beers among the most commonly consumed in Spain. Projective mapping, acceptability and check‐all‐that‐apply (CATA) were used, in all cases leading to a clear picture of the consumers' opinion. For projective mapping the panel provided four clear groups, the first dimension replicating the acceptability outcome and the second dimension separating the national beers from the foreign one. For CATA the panel differentiated beers on the basis of 8 of the 10 attributes considered. The best‐ and worst‐rated beers in acceptability were associated, respectively, with positive and negative emotions from CATA, the worst‐rated one being the only beer of type Pilsener and the one with the least alcohol. Practical Applications: Not many works combined the use of projective mapping, check‐all‐that‐apply, and acceptability. This study contributes to a better understanding of how those three techniques complement each other to shed light on the consumers' preference about commercial beers, based on images of their logos. The results obtained would be helpful for beer manufacturers in order to interpret the perception of commercial beers in a large market like Spain. The research focuses on the Water Festival (Yarqa Aspiy), an ancient event in the Peruvian Andes, and which, as an Inca activity, survived the extirpation of idolatries by the Spanish colonization. The objective is to determine the importance of ancestral rituals in the communal work of this festival that, by merging with those of the Catholic religion, survives to this day. The participant-observation methodology in the Ccarhuaccoco community allowed us to investigate the details of this ancestral communal activity with its Andean rituals. It is concluded that this activity of Inca origin is in the process of extinction due to the growth of the Evangelical Church, which eradicates idolatry in its community practice. Additionally, thanks to religious tolerance, freedom of belief, and the necessary coexistence of water with the community, the festivity is maintained, although with variations in its ritual. The Music in Serbia festival (Muzika u Srbiji – MUS) was held in Belgrade and other Serbian cities from 1976 to 1991. Presenting contemporary creativity of composers from the former Socialist Republic of Serbia and its two provinces (Socialist Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Socialist Autonomous Province of Vojvodina), as well as works by Serbian authors of older generations, MUS existed as a unique place of valorization and revalorization of domestic art music. Based on the several decades-old tradition of presenting jazz through festivals firstly in Yugoslavia, and consequently in Serbia, the Jazz in the Garden manifestation was founded in Belgrade in 2021. The name of the new festival apostrophises the location of the event – “Jevremovac” Botanical Garden. With the anthropological analysis of this manifestation, we will strive to demonstrate how the manifestation in development like this one influences the construction process of one part of Belgrade’s identity through its connections with the local jazz scene. We will also consider the influence of the creation of different perceptions and new meanings of the well-known city space like the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in which the festival is held. Sacrum Profanum festival stands as one of the prominent musical events in Krakow. The festival is recognised for its unique fusion of contemporary classical music with electronic sounds, jazz and other genres. Alongside its artistic and musical endeavours, the Sacrum Profanum festival remains dedicated to social issues, meticulously promoting gender balance in its lineup, and constantly contributing to the social debate about gender equality in the cultural sector in Poland. The Wangkang Festival has been celebrated for nearly two centuries in Melaka, Malaysia. In 2005, it was recognized as part of the national heritage of Malaysia; and in 2020 garnered global recognition with UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation. The festival centers on apprehending evil spirits believed to cause epidemics and chaos, while invoking peace and prosperity. The tradition revolves around the worship of Ong Yah, also known as the "Five Sworn Brothers," making it a vibrant cultural site to study Melaka's local Chinese identity through Taoist folk religious practices. This article documents the 2020 festival in the midst of the COVID pandemic, observes the notable absence and marginalization of women, explores gender constructions through the notion of wu (武) in Chinese masculinity, particularly through the ideal of yingxiong haohan (英雄好漢), and argues that the Chinese community carves out a Chinese public space, identity and presence in Malaysia within the Wangkang Festival context. This article investigates the relationship between second- and third-generation descendants of Cretan Muslims in Turkey and their Cretanness. It takes the public manifestations of and heightened involvement with Cretanness that have recently been taking place in Turkey as a starting point and develops a framework to elucidate the contemporary dynamics of Cretanness. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation, this study reveals that Cretanness has undergone transformation for the current generations. It is characterized by the fading of certain cultural aspects, but by a parallel vocal identification with Cretanness. This dual pattern is unified under the concept "symbolic Cretanness," inspired by Herbert Gans' notion of "symbolic ethnicity." The article argues that this current form of Cretanness encompasses the pursuit of visibility, an intermittent involvement with origins, and the precedence of symbols, the most significant of which is food. This paper presents the Targum text to Exod. 13:17–15:26 (the reading for the seventh day of Pesach) in the form that it is preserved in mahzorim (or festival prayerbooks). These liturgical manuscripts are witnesses to a textual tradition, hereafter named the "Liturgical Targum" (LTg), that is genealogically related to the broader Palestinian Targum tradition (PalTg), sharing a common source with other PalTg witnesses such as Targum Neofiti and the Fragment Targums. As reading traditions changed over time, and the role of Targum diminished within the synagogue, the text of LTg evolved: units ranging from individual words to entire verses of PalTg were removed or replaced with units of Targum Onqelos (TgOnq). Other PalTg texts show signs of this process of "Onqelosization," including the text of Fragment Targum P (FragTgP), an enigmatic manuscript that contains the festival reading for the seventh day of Pesach (among other things). This paper will argue two main points: 1. the units of Targum that are shared between LTg and other members of the PalTg tradition show influence by TgOnq (i.e., "Onqelosization"); 2. This research examines the impact of the festival attendee's optimism bias on their perceived risk management, perceived attractiveness, the need for risk control, recommendations, and behavioral intentions. The study also scrutinizes the gender differences on the variables. The research model was tested based on 508 survey responses gathered through an on-site survey. The recorded optimism bias variable was classified into high optimism bias groups (N = 303) and low optimism bias groups (N = 205). The research findings indicate that the festival attendee's need for risk control, recommendations, and behavioral intentions may vary depending on the degree of their optimism bias. For gender, females show higher variations on the variables between low and high optimism bias groups compared to males. In addition, it appears that there are significant interaction effects between optimism bias and gender. This introductory article argues, on the basis of case studies in the thematic issue, that the interplay of patronage, play, and piety provides us with a productive framework for the study of Asian festivals. We focus on the frictions inherent in festivals that include multiple actors, agendas, and precedents, and that are subject to constant change. The three concepts of patronage, play, and piety serve as tools to make sense of these frictions and their manifestation in concrete performances. All articles in this issue look at a particular festival (or set of festivals) as sites where the interests of patronage, play, and piety are negotiated in dynamic ways. We use the findings from these articles to theorise on each of these aspects. As public performances, festivals celebrate what people believe, who people are, and project what people want to be. Festivals are an important medium by which cultural, social, and religious identities are represented and negotiated. This is especially pronounced in exceptional festival events which require much more improvisational skills than 'routine' festival occasions. This contribution discusses one such event: In 2019, the Varadarāja temple in Kanchipuram celebrated a rare and long-awaited festival, called Āti Atti Varatar Vaipavam, which takes place only once in 40 years. When the number of visitors increased in unanticipated ways soon after the festival started, time-tested ritual rules were suspended, and new stakeholders started to determine the performance of the festival. This contribution traces the multiple ways in which the festival's mythological background and its performance were contested, and how the sheer number of attending pilgrims effected long-lasting changes in the social dynamics among the temple's stakeholders. The Gion festival of Kyoto has a relatively well-documented history of more than a millennium. This article uses historical sources to investigate the dynamic between patronage, piety, and play diachronically, from a longue durée perspective. Political and economic patronage took radically different forms in subsequent stages of the festival's development. Surviving sources offer more insight into structures of patronage than into piety and are even more terse when it comes to play, but even with these limitations, it is clear that shifts in patronage have had a defining impact on both. Vice versa, both piety and play have generated renewed patronage, at times inspiring concerted action to revive the festival or prevent it from collapsing. Kyoto's Gion festival offers a unique archive that allows us to study how historical circumstances have shifted the dynamic between political and economic patronage, piety, and play in one of Japan's most influential festivals. This article shows how the burgeoning Hindu festivals in small town West Bengal – in Hooghly and Nadia – can be understood as a dynamic interplay of political patronage, play as rivalry and revelry, and finally piety. The article argues that in a strategic implementation of competitive Hindutva (Hindu nationalism), the concept of utsab instead of puja is employed by the political leadership to appease the Hindu majority while ostensibly signalling towards Hindu-Muslim harmony and inclusivity. In addition, it argues that the need for decentralisation and fair distribution of resources between the metropolis and the rest of the state is expressed through festival rivalries. Furthermore, the article demonstrates the place of popular culture and aspirations towards a global urban lifestyle in the spaces of libidinal pleasures and pageantry in the festival. Finally, despite the increasingly transgressive revelry, there is a continuing, shrinking yet inviolable presence of devotion and Brahminical or priestly caste doctrine in the festival. Festivals in honor of mountain deities were revived across the Tibetan plateau in the 1980s, some years after the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) in the People's Republic of China. This article, primarily analyzes the development of one mountain festival in Amdo, Qinghai, focusing on the decades from its revival until today. During mountain deity festivals, primarily men from multiple villages, a range of religious specialists, and representatives of local authorities gather at a stone cairn on a mountain top, where a variety of rites, ceremonies, and games takes place. In the 'old society' the chieftain of a congregation of villages had an important role as patron, mediating between the deity, the deity's medium, religious specialists and villagers, while his function has diminished in the revived festival. Faced with major social-economic-political changes, while retaining and recreating many elements of tradition, striking transformations in the festival's structures of patronage, piety, and play have transformed its human network, its format, and its significance. Conservative Japanese politicians, academics, and journalists regularly state that whaling is an essential part of their national heritage, expressed in material culture, folk songs, ritual practices, and festivals. Japan has several whale festivals (kujira matsuri): playful events at which participants re-enact Edo-period (1600–1868) coastal whaling practices and perform whaling-related songs and dances. This article compares the festivals of Taiji (Wakayama), Kayoi (Yamaguchi), Shinkami-gotō (Nagasaki), and Ayukawa (Miyagi). It argues that these festivals not only have economic and social significance for the communities in question; they also support the notion of Japan as a traditional whaling nation. By organising and participating in these festivals, local priests, volunteers, and audiences enact this imagined whaling heritage, thus supporting the agenda of the present-day whaling industry. However, local actors have their own motivations and interests, and in fact the celebration of whaling heritage is not contingent upon the continuation of whaling today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Aztec (Mexica) city of Tenochtitlan was transformed after the Spanish invasion of 1519–21 into a staging ground for Habsburg colonial experiments. Indigenous response is glimpsed in this essay through the lens of annals, written in Nahuatl, that document urban festivals celebrating Spanish Habsburg monarchs. I argue that the redeployment of particular spaces—long charged with meaning by Indigenous residents—was crucial to the public legitimacy of the Habsburg festival. These festivals promoted new means of temporal orientation, thus disrupting Indigenous orientations in time, at the same moment that Indigenous calendars were coming under scrutiny for their heretical potentials. This paper investigates how volunteer managers from Roskilde Festival experience, enact, and respond to organisational paradoxes and how these paradoxes are both formed by, and sustain, the organisational context of the festival. The festival is a professional world-class event with high standards of performance, while being primarily volunteer-driven. This constitutes a context of "professional volunteerism", which serves as a locus of interwoven paradoxical tensions. Paradox is often portrayed as a pair of poles that are connected, but in opposition, this paper illustrates how different paradoxes and the responses to them can be interwoven, thereby describing a more complex understanding of paradox. A key broadening participation challenge for science communication is to reach non-traditional audiences beyond those already interested in science. In this study we test a "Guerilla Science" approach that blends elements of access, by removing barriers to participation, with those of inclusion, by designing participant-centered activities, for reaching an art-interested adult audience at the FIGMENT art festival in New York City. Our results show that participants at Guerilla Science were similar to festival goers overall in their connection to and interest in science, indicating the effectiveness of the approach for engaging non-traditional audiences and those who might not self-select into science activities. Aristophanes' Frogs was first performed at the Lenaea festival of 405 in competition with Plato's Cleophon and Phrynichus' Muses. This paper argues that Frogs contains a series of agonistic jokes against Phrynichus, most of which have gone unnoticed because he shares his name with a tragic poet and a politician; Aristophanes plays with the ambiguity of the name Phrynichus to mock his Lenaean rival by comparing him unfavourably with his namesakes. Aristophanes ultimately claims that his comedy is superior to that of Phrynichus because he is more successful than his rival in appropriating and redeploying other comedians' material. Festivals have been conceptualised as serious leisure activities as well as arenas for cultural capital acquisition and embodiment. However, there is still theoretical confusion surrounding the process of cultural embodiment, especially in leisure practices. This article suggests that the serious leisure perspective, in combination with cultural capital ideas, offers a means of deepening understanding of how cultural capital can be embodied in festival settings. To make its arguments, the article draws on qualitative data collected at two long-established literary festivals, one in Ireland and one in Italy. Observations and interviews with festival participants were used to develop an understanding of participants' cultural capital embodiment. The article suggests that the serious leisure perspective is a valuable theory to throw light on three elements of cultural embodiment at festivals: (1) body; (2) pre-existing cultural resources; (3) time. Interlinking serious leisure with cultural capital leads to an in-depth analysis of how culture is embodied during festivals. This article demonstrates the value of using serious leisure and the embodied state of cultural capital ideas in tandem to further understand cultural embodiment in festivals. Between 1970 and 1975, at least 18 rock festivals took place in Australia, often near regional towns. These have gone largely undocumented. By focusing on these "forgotten" festivals, this article contributes to our understanding of the festival's role in Australian music culture, mapping the Australian context over the international rock music trends of the time. These festivals highlight the contribution of regional and rural settings to the development of contemporary Australian popular music. The use of the mythology of Woodstock in discourses around the festivals demonstrates conflicts within the youth countercultures of the time, and moral panics associated with them. The connection between the festival of Pesaḥ-Maṣṣot and the Israelites' exodus from Egypt is a cornerstone of Jewish identity and religious practice which has its roots in the festival calendars of the Pentateuch (Exod. 12–13; Exod. 23; Lev. 23; Deut. 16). However, a closer investigation shows that the texts in question differ considerably both with respect to the characteristics of the festival and its etiological connection with the exodus. The present paper focuses particularly on the complex, and in parts contradictory, festival ordinances in Exod. 12:1–13:16 and argues that the present form of the passage results from a multi-step process of supplementation and revision. In this process, the once separate festivals of Pesaḥ and Maṣṣot were gradually merged to a single celebration which, in turn, led to various adjustments of their etiological connection to the events of the exodus. This article argues that Horace's incorporation of festivals does more than reflect his lived reality and add a Roman veneer to Greek lyric. Horace's festivals weave the poet and his life into publicly shared Roman time. His celebration of private events on public holidays mirrors the kind of penetration of public and private we see in imperial appropriation of the fasti. Just as 28 April, the start of the Floralia, gains new significance with the addition of feriae celebrating the transfer of Vesta's temple to Augustus' house, so also 1 March comes to signify both the Matronalia as well as the divine rescue of Horace the bachelor. Horace's inclusion of private festivals in his monumentum allows him to create a parallel calendar, one which perhaps competes with the imperial fasti. The article discusses the biblical readings on Marian feasts and festivals. It is pointed out that the Bible contains only a few texts that explicitly refer to Mary. Nevertheless, there are many Marian feasts in the liturgical year for which specific scripture texts are selected. The article provides an overview of the biblical readings on certain Marian feasts and highlights the differences before and after the liturgical reform of 1969/70. Various readings from the Old and New Testament are presented, which can be interpreted either as Old Testament types for Mary or as Christological impulses. The purpose of the study is to compare the festival and competition activities of opera houses in the socio-cultural context (on the examples of national opera houses of Kyiv, Odesa, and Lviv in recent years). The research methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach that includes knowledge of cultural studies, art history, and management of socio-cultural activities. The main method of the article is comperative analysis, as we have tried to compare and highlight the key forms of festival and competition activities of the studied theatres and their socio-cultural context. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comparative analysis of the festival and competition activities of opera houses in the socio-cultural context (on the examples of the national opera houses of Kyiv, Odesa, and Lviv in recent years). Having examined the festival and competition activities of the theatres we studied in 2020-2023, we can identify the following main trend in this aspect of functioning: the course of moving away from the closeness ("inflexibility") of the theatre to an open artistic discourse through international partnerships, joint projects, and cooperation with other artistic groups in Ukraine -- theatres act as a discussion cultural and artistic platform in the socio-cultural and professional space. Thimithi – the Tamil Hindu fire-walking ceremony has always attracted the attention of the curious and the thrill seeker and remains a tourist attraction as well as the performance of a solemn vow in many parts of the world where it continues to be enacted. A source of much speculation as to the participants' apparent ability to withstand the pain of walking over hot coals, travellers' often exaggerated accounts of eye witness attendance at such events regularly graced the columns of western journals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This article focusses on an unusual investigation carried out in colonial Mauritius in mid-1874. The enquiry resulted from a published description of thimithi written by Nicolas Pike, former American consul on the island which caused concern at the colonial office in London, who asked for an explanation. This produced a set of reports, firstly by British police officers, and secondly, but more remarkably, by leading members of the Tamil community on Mauritius. Their detailed and occasionally humorous responses to the western orientalist gaze deftly unpick the absurdities and hypocrisies of the so-called ruling caste whilst their very involvement serves to complicate our understanding of the relationship between white settler and Indian 'subject' in the mid-Victorian colonial empire. Parties are communication spaces that disrupt daily routines and generate a break in ordinary temporality. At the same time, they promote the construction of a festive we through union, exchange, enjoyment, the release of tensions and, at the same time, disputes. They are also desirable spaces for state interventions. In this article, we propose to carry out a critical reading of the officialization strategies that configure the National Holidays in the territory of northern Patagonia and that are developed within the framework of a global process of festive coloniality. Background: Illicit substance use has constantly evolved over the years, particularly in the party scene. Monitoring these changes is essential to adapt harm reduction strategies. The OCTOPUS survey was implemented to enhance knowledge on drug use at music festivals. The objective of the work presented here was to describe drug use and to characterize profiles of substance use in music festival attendees. Methods: OCTOPUS was a cross-sectional survey carried out during 13 various music festivals (dub, eclectic and electronic music) in the Loire-Atlantique department (France) from July 2017 to July 2018. Participants were festival attendees. Data were collected by trained research staff using a face-to-face structured interview. We analysed the use of illicit drugs in the last 12 months to describe the prevalence of use and to characterize the profile of substance use using a latent class analysis. Results: In total, 383 festival attendees were included. Of 314 (82%) participants who reported drug use, the most reported drugs were cannabis, ecstasy/MDMA and cocaine. We identified two profiles of drug use: (i) a "no/low polysubstance use" profile mainly characterized by the use of "classic" stimulants (ecstasy/MDMA, cocaine) and (ii) "moderate/extensive polysubstance use", with high probabilities of "classic" stimulants use and especially other drugs reported: speed, ketamine, new psychoactive substances (NPSs). Conclusion: We observed frequent polysubstance use in festival attendees. Harm reduction should be targeted at the increased risk of toxicity linked to polysubstance use, and the reduction in harm caused by particular drugs (ketamine, NPS, speed) could be further strengthened. This paper is the first to explore public perceptions about a particular market niche for hydrogen; mobile generators. By utilising a combined research approach including in-situ surveys and online focus groups, this paper explores what festival audience members and residents who live near festival sites think about the displacement of incumbent diesel generator technology with hydrogen alternatives. We investigate if hydrogen production methods are important in informing perceptions and subsequent support, including the extent to which participants are influenced by the organisation or entity that produces the fuel and stands to profit from its sale. In addition to a primary focus on hydrogen energy, we reflect upon how sustainability might be better conceptualised in a festival context. This article analyses the Monte Paradiso hardcore punk festival in the city of Pula as an important subcultural event for the punk scene and its impact on tourism. The research aims to determine the importance of the festival in relation to tourism supply and the specific spatial features of this event. Pula was a military and industrial city, but it later became famous as a festival destination. In the summer of 1992, a group of punk enthusiasts organized the first Monte Paradiso festival. The event took place in an abandoned Austro-Hungarian fortress. That venue hosted the festival every summer from 1992 to 2000. The festival programme attracted numerous punk fans, but its impact on tourism was irrelevant. Since 2001, the festival has been organized in the Karlo Rojc Community Centre, housed in a former Yugoslav army building in the Monte Zaro urban district. The findings indicate that the festival has become a part of the city's tourist promotion and the rebranding of Pula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article offers an analysis of FIFA's Football for Hope (FFH) movement with a particular focus on the 20 Centres for 2010 Campaign that was connected to the 2010 World Cup, and the FFH Festivals held during the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Using document analysis and observations made during the FFH Festival at the 2014 World Cup and drawing on Levitas' (2013) Utopia as Method, this article analyzes claims made by FIFA that football can bring hope and build a better future. Ultimately, the hope that FIFA promotes, and their imagined future is one that is essentially predetermined and is based on the current status quo. This paper delineates unequal inscriptions of the Yulan Festival, whether as national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) or local ICH, for different ethnic groups in Hong Kong. I argue that the authorised heritage discourse that underlies the inscription of the Yulan Festival is based on the fossilised imagination of ethnic traditions and identities. Classifying the Yulan Festival according to ethnic ritual traditions implies an assumption on the existence of a homogenous ethnic community and tradition, and seems to overlook the dynamic of ethnic tradition, as well as the hybrid and flexible nature of culture and identity. This authorised system has acknowledged and exaggerated differences between various ethnic traditions and has understated the importance of integrated practices, diversified, flexible, and hybrid practices, the changing ethnic complexity of local communities, as well as the subjective agency of individuals. A gap between what was practiced and what was institutionalised is noted, and individual agency is observed in negotiating the festival in relation to the institutionalised heritage designations. Introduction: Despite increasing evidence challenging the effectiveness and legality of police drug dog operations, these strategies remain common. We aimed to describe drug dog encounters at music festivals, behavioural adaptations taken in anticipation of their presence and consequences of encounters amongst a sample of people who regularly use MDMA/ecstasy. Methods: Data were collected via interviewer‐administered questionnaires in April–June 2019. Australians aged 16 years or older who used MDMA/ecstasy and/or other stimulants monthly in the last 6 months were recruited from capital cities via social media and word‐of‐mouth (n = 797). Participants reported recent drug dog encounters, encounter settings and actions taken in anticipation of and in response to encounters. Results: In this sample, encounters with drug dogs at festivals were common (60%), with most participants (92%) reporting anticipating the encounter. Most (86%) of this group reported behavioural adaptations to avoid a detection, with concealing drugs well (57%) and consuming prior to entering the festival (20%) most reported. Only 4% of those who expected drug dog presence chose not to carry or consume drugs. One‐quarter (26%) of those who reported an encounter were stopped by police and 4% were searched (bodily/bag search). Discussion and Conclusion: Most participants anticipated drug dog presence at festivals, however, were not deterred from carrying or consuming drugs. Some reported adaptations to avoid detection may increase drug‐related health, social and legal harms. Our study suggests drug dog presence at festivals does not deter carriage/use of illegal drugs, and echoes concerns regarding the efficacy and appropriateness of this policing initiative. Although festivals are often promoted as opportunities for community empowerment, power dynamics during festival organization might hinder such potential. To discuss this issue, this article examines the Alter do Chão Film Festival (FestAlter), an originally collaborative project in the touristic village of Alter do Chão, Brazil. Through 16 interviews with festival stakeholders, the article unveils the changing power dynamics within the organization of the festival, and how these impacted the event's goals of community participation. I argue that the organization of this event moved from union to rupture among festival stakeholders – a trajectory caused by managerial divergences regarding the meaning of community participation and a lack of understanding of the history, culture and socioeconomic circumstances of Alter do Chão, an Amazonian village marked by enduring legacies of colonial exploitation.
