There is a high prevalence of adolescent girls with ovulatory menstrual (OM) dysfunction, which is associated with school absenteeism and mental health challenges. Low menstrual health literacy among this group has evoked calls to review OM health education. This qualitative study sought to explore gaps in current OM health education and to validate a holistic school-based OM health literacy program named My Vital Cycles®. Findings are based on 19 written reflections, six focus group discussions and three interviews conducted with 28 girls aged 14–18 years from 11 schools, and five mothers. Six themes compared current OM health education with My Vital Cycles®: understating health, comprehensiveness, resources, teaching, parents and cycle tracking. Future refinements to the program comprised: inclusion of the complete reproductive lifespan, use of visual media and developing a mobile application. Introduction: Fertility after cancer is a top concern for adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYAs) (15–39 years old at diagnosis). The authors characterized live births after cancer by race and ethnicity ("race/ethnicity") in a population‐based sample of female AYAs. Methods: This study used Texas Cancer Registry data linked to birth certificates (1995–2016) to estimate cumulative incidence of live birth, based on first live birth after cancer, and compared differences by race/ethnicity. Proportional subdistribution hazards models were used to estimate associations between race/ethnicity and live birth, adjusted for diagnosis age, cancer type, stage, year, and prior live birth, overall and for each cancer type. Results: Among 65,804 AYAs, 10‐year cumulative incidence of live birth was lower among non‐Hispanic Black AYAs than other racial/ethnic groups: 10.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.4–10.9) compared to 15.9% (95% CI, 14.1–17.9) among Asian or Pacific Islander, 14.7% (95% CI, 14.2–15.3) among Hispanic, and 15.2% (95% CI, 14.8–15.6) among non‐Hispanic White AYAs (p <.01). In the adjusted overall model, Black AYAs were less likely to have a live birth after cancer than all other groups. In adjusted models for each cancer type, live birth was significantly less likely for Black AYAs with gynecologic cancers or lymphomas (compared to White AYAs) or thyroid cancers (compared to Hispanic AYAs). Conclusion: Black AYAs are less likely than AYAs of other races/ethnicities to have a live birth after cancer, in contrast to patterns of live birth in the general population. Research and action to promote childbearing equity after cancer are imperative. The objective of this prospective cohort study was to determine if progesterone (P4) profiles differed between dairy cows with or without inflammatory disorders early postpartum. A total of 708 cows from 2 commercial herds were enrolled 3 wk before parturition and examined for clinical health disorders (difficult calving, retained placenta, metritis, displaced abomasum, mastitis, or lameness) until 5 wk postpartum. Serum haptoglobin (Hp) was measured in blood at 2 and 6 DIM (range ±2 d); metritis was assessed at 4, 8, 11, and 15 DIM; and purulent vaginal discharge and endometritis (≥6% PMN in endometrial cytology sampled by cytobrush) were assessed at 35 ± 3 DIM. As Hp ≥0.8 g/L or endometritis were associated with ovarian dysfunction in previous studies, cows with serum Hp ≥0.8 g/L at either time point and endometritis, regardless of clinical disease, were classified as the cohort with inflammatory disorders (INFLAM; n = 139). Clinically healthy cows without difficult calving, with singleton birth, with Hp <0.8 g/L at both sampling times, without endometritis or purulent vaginal discharge, and BCS ≥3.00 (1 to 5 scale) were classified as healthy (n = 133). Cows with only one of the 2 conditions (high Hp or endometritis) were excluded. Cohorts had serum P4 measured twice weekly from 35 to 70 DIM (±3 d), and the first detected luteal phase (LP) during the sampling period was defined as the period from onset of luteal activity (P4 increase to ≥1 ng/mL) until decline of P4 to <1 ng/mL. The odds of prolonged LP (≥21 d long), average LP length, peak P4, and time to P4 decline (hazard rate) were analyzed using multivariable mixed logistic, linear, or Cox proportional hazard regression models including INFLAM status, parity, sampling day (when applicable), and herd as a random effect considering the covariates of season, milk yield at first DHIA test, and DIM at onset of cyclicity or LP length (when applicable). Cows with INFLAM had greater odds of prolonged LP (LSM ± SEM; 67% vs. 37% ± 7%), greater average LP length (17 vs. 15 ± 2 d), lesser P4 at d 4 (4.6 vs. 5.5 ± 0.3 ng/mL) and d 7 (6.0 vs. 7.7 ± 0.3 ng/mL) of the LP, and lesser peak P4 (6.9 vs. 8.2 ± 0.3 ng/mL) during the LP than healthy cows. Status of INFLAM was associated with time to P4 decline in multiparous but not primiparous cows; the LP of INFLAM multiparous cows was less likely to have luteolysis (P4 decline) by d 14 (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR] and 95% CI: 0.54; 0.31 to 0.94) or by d 21 (AHR: 0.32; 0.12 to 0.84) than in healthy multiparous cows. In conclusion, postpartum cows with markers of systemic inflammation at wk 1 and uterine inflammation at wk 5 had altered luteal function (prolonged LP and lower P4 concentrations) before first breeding, which is a possible pathway linking postpartum health disorders and reduced fertility. Our objectives were to evaluate the endometrial responsiveness of dairy heifers to an intrauterine infusion of recombinant bovine interferon-tau (rbIFN-τ) and to associate endometrial responses to rbIFN-τ with subsequent reproductive performance. In experiments 1 and 2, cyclic heifers were enrolled in a program for synchronization of the estrous cycle, and blood sampling and ultrasonography examinations were performed on d 0, 4, 7, 11, and 14 of the estrous cycle. In experiment 1, heifers were randomly assigned to receive an intrauterine infusion containing 2 µg of rbIFN-τ (rbIFN-τ = 19) or saline control (CTRL = 19) into the uterine horn ipsilateral to the corpus luteum (CL) on d 14 of the estrous cycle. Then, 6 hours after the infusion, the infused uterine horn was flushed for sampling of the uterine luminal fluid (ULF) for composition analysis, and the endometrium was biopsied for transcriptomics. In experiment 2, 100 heifers received an intrauterine infusion of rbIFN-τ, and the same procedures for uterine sample collection were performed as described in experiment 1. After the intrauterine test, heifers were enrolled in a breeding program and classified as highly fertile (HF; pregnant at first AI) or subfertile (SF; not pregnant at first AI). Statistical analyses were performed using regression models, which included the effects of treatment (experiment 1: CTRL vs. rbIFN-τ) or fertility group (experiment 2: HF vs. SF) and block of samples. Intrauterine infusion of rbIFN-τ increased the expression of classical interferon-stimulated genes in the endometrium (e.g., ISG15, MX1, OAS2, IRF9 , and USP18), and an antiviral response was predicted to be the main downstream effect of the transcriptome changes. In addition, rbIFN-τ increased the abundance of cholesterol, glycerol, and the overall concentration of oxylipins in the ULF. Analysis of endometrial transcriptome between HF and SF heifers revealed important differences in the expression of genes associated with cell signaling, metabolism, attachment, and migration, with a large representation of genes encoding extracellular matrix proteins. In general, differentially expressed genes were expected to be downregulated by IFN-τ but seemed to fail to be downregulated in SF heifers, resulting in higher expression in SF compared with HF heifers. Subfertile heifers had lower concentrations of glycerol and an altered profile of oxylipins in the ULF, with a lower abundance of oxylipins derived from arachidonic acid and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid, and a greater abundance of oxylipins derived from linoleic acid. Measurements of ovarian function did not differ between groups and, therefore, did not influence the observed results in uterine biology. Overall, the endometrial responsiveness to IFN-τ is variable among individuals and associated with subsequent fertility of heifers, indicating that communication between conceptus and endometrium is critical for the uterine receptivity and survival of pregnancy. The objectives of this prospective cohort study were to characterize associations among genomic merit for fertility with ovarian and endocrine function and the estrous behavior of dairy cows during an entire nonhormonally manipulated estrous cycle. Lactating Holstein cows entering their first (n = 82) or second (n = 37) lactation had ear-notch tissue samples collected for genotyping using a commercial genomic test. Based on genomic predicted transmitting ability values for daughter pregnancy rate (gDPR), cows were classified into high (Hi-Fert; gDPR > 0.6, n = 36), medium (Med-Fert; gDPR −1.3 to 0.6, n = 45), and low fertility (Lo-Fert; gDPR < −1.3, n = 38) groups. At 33 to 39 DIM, cohorts of cows were enrolled in the Presynch-Ovsynch protocol for synchronization of ovulation and initiation of a new estrous cycle. Thereafter, the ovarian function and endocrine dynamics were monitored daily until the next ovulation by transrectal ultrasonography and concentrations of progesterone (P4), estradiol, and FSH. Estrous behavior was monitored with an ear-attached automated estrus detection system that recorded physical activity and rumination time. Overall, we observed an association between fertility group and the ovarian and hormonal phenotype of dairy cows during the estrous cycle. Cows in the Hi-Fert group had greater circulating concentrations of P4 than cows in the Lo-Fert group from d 4 to 13 after induction of ovulation and from day −3 to −1 before the onset of luteolysis. The frequency of atypical estrous cycles was 3-fold greater for cows in the Lo-Fert than the Hi-Fert group. We also observed other modest associations between genomic merit for fertility with the follicular dynamics and estrous behavior. We found several associations between milk yield and parity with ovarian, endocrine, and estrous behavior phenotypes as cows with greater milk yield and in the second lactation were more likely to have unfavorable phenotypes. These results demonstrate that differences in reproductive performance between cows of different genomic merit for fertility classified based on gDPR may be partially associated with circulating concentrations of P4, the incidence of atypical phenotypes during the estrous cycles, and, to a lesser extent, the follicular wave dynamics. The observed physiological and endocrine phenotypes might help explain part of the differences in reproductive performance between cows of superior and inferior genomic merit for fertility. Fourier harmonic analysis (FHA) is a robust method for identification of minute changes in sperm nuclear shape that are indicative of reduced fertility. The current study was designed to develop a fertility prediction model for Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls through FHA of sperm. In experiment I, FHA technique was standardized, average sperm nuclear perimeter was measured and sperm nuclear shape plot of buffalo bull was constructed. Sperm of buffalo bulls (n = 10) were stained with YOYO-1 and Hoechst-33342 to differentiate live and dead, and digital images were captured using phase contrast and fluorescent microscopy. The images were analyzed by ImageJ software and 100 sperm/bull were evaluated. The results are described as mean ± SEM values of mean harmonic amplitude (mharm), skewness harmonic amplitude (skharm), kurtosis harmonic amplitude (kurharm) and variance harmonic amplitude (varharm) at Fourier frequencies 0–5 along with the cartesian and polar coordinate plots of buffalo bull sperm. In experiment II, a fertility prediction model was developed based on FHA of buffalo bull sperm. Semen samples of low (n = 6), medium (n = 3) and high (n = 8) fertility bulls were investigated for FHA of sperm and harmonic amplitudes (HA) were generated. Firstly, to determine if live and dead sperm population have unique nuclear shape distribution; the mean, skewness, kurtosis and variance HA 0–5 of 1700 live and 1294 dead spermatozoa of 17 bulls were evaluated. T-test signified a difference in the mharm0 (2.363 ± 0.01 vs. 2.439 ± 0.02), skharm0 (−0.0002 ± 0.07 vs. −0.266 ± 0.09), kurharm0 (−0.156 ± 0.07 vs. 0.260 ± 0.18), kurharm2 (0.142 ± 0.11 vs. 1.031 ± 0.32) and varharm4 (0.109 ± 0.00 vs. 0.082 ± 0.00) of live vs. dead sperm population (p < 0.05). Therefore, 100 live sperm/bull were further evaluated for mean, skewness, kurtosis and variance HA 0–5 values among high (n = 6) and low-fertility (n = 6) groups. Results of T-test showed higher values of mharm2 (0.739 ± 0.01 vs. 0.686 ± 0.00), mharm4 (0.105 ± 0.001 vs. 0.007 ± 0.001), and skharm0 (0.214 ± 0.109 vs. −0.244 ± 0.097) in high vs. low-fertility group (p < 0.05). In next step, five significantly different combinations of discriminant measures between high and low-fertility groups were obtained by discriminant analysis. Summary: The N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) mRNA modification is crucial for plant development and stress responses. In rice, the male sterility resulting from the deficiency of OsFIP37, a core component of m6A methyltransferase complex, emphasizes the significant role of m6A in male fertility. m6A is reversible and can be removed by m6A demethylases. However, whether mRNA m6A demethylase regulates male fertility in rice has remained unknown. Here, we identify the mRNA m6A demethylase OsALKBH9 and demonstrate its involvement in male fertility regulation. Knockout of OsALKBH9 causes male sterility, dependent on its m6A demethylation activity. Cytological analysis reveals defective tapetal programmed cell death (PCD) and excessive accumulation of microspores exine in Osalkbh9‐1. Transcriptome analysis of anthers shows up‐regulation of genes involved in tapetum development, sporopollenin synthesis, and transport pathways in Osalkbh9‐1. Additionally, we demonstrate that OsALKBH9 demethylates the m6A modification in TDR and GAMYB transcripts, which affects the stability of these mRNAs and ultimately leads to excessive accumulation of pollen exine. Our findings highlight the precise control of mRNA m6A modification and reveal the pivotal roles played by OsALKBH9‐mediated m6A demethylation in tapetal PCD and pollen exine accumulation in rice. This study examines the effects of export tariff liberalization on women’s marriage and fertility choices in China. Utilizing a shift-share design that combines industry-level variation in export tariff reduction with differences in industry composition across cities, we discover that women in areas with greater export tariff reductions exhibit a reduced inclination to marry, postpone marriage, and have a higher likelihood to marry well-educated partners. Moreover, these reductions in export tariffs negatively impact women’s fertility primarily through altering marriage formation and timing, and marginally affect newborn sex ratios. We further explore potential channels and highlight the role of improvements in women’s absolute and relative economic status. Existing literature shows that a ban on child labour may be self-enforcing under the extreme assumption that, above the subsistence level, no amount of consumption can compensate parents for the disutility of child labour. The present paper shows that a partial ban may be self-enforcing also in a more general model where education is an alternative to work, and the disutility of child labour can be compensated by higher present consumption or future income, but a total ban may not. It also shows that, in the absence of informational asymmetries, child labour can be eliminated and a first best achieved if the ban is combined with a credit-backed policy including a subsidy to parents, and a tax on skilled adults. A first best is out of reach if the use children make of their time when they are neither at school, nor working in the labour market is private information, because the policy maker then faces an incentive-compatibility constraint. Introduction: It is still unclear whether Crohn's disease (CD) might be associated with diminished ovarian reserve (OvR) and factors influencing anti‐Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels in CD are poorly known. Material and Methods: We conducted a comprehensive literature search of multiple electronic databases from inception to June 2022 to identify all studies reporting AMH levels or factors associated with diminished OvR in patients with CD. Results: Of the 48 studies identified in our search, eight (including 418 patients with CD) were finally included. The mean difference (95% confidence interval [CI]) in the AMH level between pooled CD patients and controls was −0.56 (−1.14 to 0.03) (p = 0.06). A history of CD‐related surgery was not associated with a lower OvR (odds ratio, OR [95% CI] 1.34, [0.66–2.7]; p = 0.4). While disease activity and perianal disease seems associated with a low OvR, disease location (L2 vs. L1, OR [95% CI] = 95% CI [0.47–7.4]; p = 0.4) and L3 vs. L1 (OR [95% CI] = 1.44 [0.67–3.12]; p = 0.3), CD medication, and disease behavior were not. Conclusions: Our systematic review and meta‐analysis did not identify a significantly low OvR in patients with CD. Fertility treatment enables involuntary childless people to have genetically related children, something that, for many, is a valuable life project. In this paper, I respond to two sets of objections that have been raised against expanding state‐funded fertility treatment provision for existing treatments, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and against funding new treatments, such as uterine transplantation (UTx). Following McTernan, I refer to the first set of objections as the 'one good among many' objection. It purports that it is unjustifiable for the state to prioritise the funding of the life project of becoming a parent through fertility treatment provision over the funding of other life projects that people might have. Following Lotz, I refer to the second set of objections as the 'norm‐legitimation' objection. It maintains that the provision of costly forms of fertility treatment, such as UTx, would legitimise problematic social norms concerning genetic relatedness, reproduction and parenting, and that states should not engage in such a legitimation. In response to these objections, I defend the view that (reproductive) preferences ought to be taken more seriously when discussing fertility treatment provision and parental projects, and that not doing so can be costly, especially for women. The approach defended in this paper seeks to avoid disregarding and policing preferences and to reconcile their fulfilment with political projects aimed at improving the material and social conditions of sub‐fertile people: people who, for social or biological reasons (or an intersection of the two), are unable to reproduce unassisted. Background: Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) experience psychological and social challenges concerning future events such as marriage and childbirth alongside the medical risks of colorectal cancer (CRC) and FAP-related disease. We retrospectively investigated the rate of marriage and childbirth postoperatively in Japanese patients with FAP. Methods: We included 161 patients who had colorectal surgery and reported marital status from a national survey of 35 Japanese institutions. Participants were classified according to marital status: married before colectomy (80 patients), married after colectomy (13 patients), and unmarried (68 patients). Results: The marriage rate for all 161 patients (57.8%, standardized ratio 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.76–1.14) was comparable to that in the general Japanese population (57.1%). The marriage rate among the 81 patients who were unmarried before colectomy was low (16.0%); however, the standardized marital ratio (0.75, 95% CI 0.34–1.15) was not significantly lower than that of the general population. In multivariable logistic regression, younger age (born after 1980, odds ratio [OR] 0.12, p < 0.001) and genetic testing (OR 4.06, p = 0.001) were associated with postoperative marriage. Seventy-one percent of patients with FAP who married after colectomy became pregnant and achieved delivery. Conclusions: The marriage rate of patients with FAP was comparable to that of the general population whereas the rate after colectomy was low among patients with FAP. Japan's low fertility rate has been a concern for over thirty years. Despite a vast literature on the topic, numerous policies and measures to boost the country's fertility rate, and the will of Japanese people to have a family, Japan seems powerless to remedy the problem commonly called shôshika in Japanese. Yet, Southern parts of Japan show that it does not equally affect the archipelago. Remote islands in Japan have an exceptionally high fertility rate compared to other developed countries. The paper aims to understand the reasons for their high fertility rate by focusing on late and lifelong singlehood (bankonka and mikonka) as a critical factor of the shôshika. It will particularly pay attention to the perception of love and romance in one of those remote islands: Tokunoshima. It will argue that the absence of commodification in romantic intercourse facilitates matchmaking that would result in the creation of a family. People are more likely to meet someone with whom they will have a family when the dating process is not embedded with commodified gestures. On another note, although their view of dating is similar to individuals in other developed countries, the practice of dating takes alternative forms that force them not to rely on the commodification of romance, which increases their chances of matchmaking. As a result, inhabitants of Tokunoshima quickly find a marriage partner, which contributes to the absence of late and lifelong singlehood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Females' ability to select mates that can fertilize eggs directly impacts their fitness, but the secondary sexual traits that often guide mate choice may not be directly correlated with male fertility. In externally fertilizing species, such as many fish species, chemical cues in ejaculates may allow females to assess male fertilization capacity. However, chemical cues associated with sperm release have only been described in a few species, and evidence that females use these cues to discriminate among males remains limited. Female sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus , use several chemical cues to find and interact with potential mates, including a sex pheromone released by males across their gill epithelia and a second sex pheromone released in their semen. Unlike males of many fish species that control pheromone release via urinary pulses, male sea lamprey continually broadcast the gill pheromone once they are sexually mature. This presents a potentially costly scenario for females because attraction to males that are not actively spawning or that are sperm-depleted likely wastes time and energy. We tested the hypothesis that female sea lamprey use pheromones present in seminal plasma to discriminate among potential mates. In-stream behavioural assays revealed that females (1) preferred seminal plasma + male-conditioned water (containing gill-released pheromones) over male-conditioned water alone, (2) preferred male-conditioned water + 2× seminal plasma over male-conditioned water + 1× seminal plasma and (3) oriented towards seminal plasma over large distances and when no male-conditioned water was applied. Taken together, our results indicate that female sea lamprey use seminal pheromones to find and remain near males with immediate fertilization capacity, thereby reducing the risk of wasting time and energy during their single, reproductive window. Context: Integrated omics studies hold a crucial role in improving our understanding of reproductive biology. However, the complex datasets so generated are often only accessible via supplementary data files, which lack the capacity for interactive features to allow users to readily interrogate and visualise data of interest. Aims: The intent of this technical note was to develop an interactive web-based application that enables detailed interrogation of a representative sperm proteome, facilitating a deeper understanding of the proteins identified, their relative abundance, classifications, functions, and associated phenotypes. Methods: We developed a Shiny web application, ShinySperm (), utilising R and several complementary libraries for data manipulation (dplyr), interactive tables (DT), and visualisation (ggplot2, plotly). ShinySperm features a responsive user interface, dynamic filtering options, interactive charts, and data export capabilities. Key results: ShinySperm allows users to interactively search, filter, and visualise sperm proteomics data based on key features (e.g. protein classification, sperm cell domain, presence, or absence at different maturation stages). This application responds live to filtering options and enables the generation of interactive plots and tables, thus enhancing user engagement and understanding of the data. Conclusions: ShinySperm provides a robust platform for the dynamic exploration of epididymal sperm proteome data. It significantly improves accessibility and interpretability of complex datasets, allowing for effective data-driven insights. Implications: This technical note highlights the potential of interactive web applications in reproductive biology and provides a plug and play script for the field to produce applications for meaningful researcher interaction with complex omic datasets. Increased female age at mating is considered a detrimental factor on reproductive output and fitness in insects, even if the impact is rather species specific. The effect of delayed mating on reproductive output has been widely studied in pest species controlled with mating disruption, as if the method is not fully effective in suppressing matings, it could still delay them, limiting female fitness and pest damage. Female mating delay, however, may also occur in natural habitats without invoking mating disruption. We studied the effect of female delayed mating in Cerambyx welensii (Küster) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), an oak‐living sapro‐xylophagous longhorn beetle considered a critical factor in oak decline. Several life history and ecological traits may potentially delay mating, including low abundance, (re)colonisation processes, sexual communication channel, host‐produced kairomones, operational sex ratio, reproductive interference and adverse weather conditions. We conducted laboratory tests to assess the impact of mating delays (0‐, 10‐, 20‐ and 30‐day post‐emergence) on reproductive output. Data showed that mating delay until at least 20 days of age had a limited effect on mating success, lifetime fecundity, longevity and fertility. The daily fecundity pattern depended on mating delay, and virgin females showed ovarian retention. We conclude that C. welensii females have evolved physiological adaptations to overcome mating delays and optimise fitness. We discuss our results from an evolutionary perspective, considering specifically the risk of early predation and egg‐laying time limitation. We hypothesise that unpredictable recurrent stochastic variation in male availability could act as an additional driver selecting for synovigeny in this longhorn species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adipose tissue quantity and quality both affect oocyte quality and endometrial factors required for reproductive success. Within adipose tissue (WAT), adipocytes produce and secrete bioactive molecules, known as adipokines, that exert endocrine and paracrine effects on various reproductive processes. WAT is highly dynamic and changes at the whole organ and cellular level in response to reproductive hormone fluctuations during menarche, pregnancy, and menopause. Metabolic studies should always include the use of females, with a proper study design that considers menstrual/estrous cycle stage and hormone levels. Body composition impacts female fertility and there are established relationships between adipose tissue and the reproductive system. Maintaining functional adipose tissue is vital for meeting the energetic demands during the reproductive process, from ovulation to delivery and lactation. White adipose tissue (WAT) shows plastic responses to daily physiology and secretes diverse adipokines that affect the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis, but many other interorgan interactions remain to be determined. This review summarizes the current state of research on the dialogue between WAT and the female reproductive system, focusing on the impact of this crosstalk on ovarian and endometrial factors essential for fecundity. Gender inequality generates negative consequences for the economy, social sphere, and often the environment at the level of individual countries and the world. In this way, inequality creates a gender gap. The issue of reducing the gender gap was highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals and drew scientists' attention from various fields and international organizations to a multifaceted study of the gender gap phenomenon at different levels. The article analyzes available indicators that measure the gender gap and the conducted earlier research on the factors that influence gender equality. We chose the Global Gender Gap Index. We found a statistically significant impact on the gender gap: the share of women in the total population, the level of achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the level of democracy, and GNI per capita. Thus, by accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals and implementing democratic reforms, countries are reducing the gender gap in society. Our study did not confirm the statistically significant inverse relationship between fertility rates and the gender gap, which was previously established based on incomplete statistical information. Also, the gender gap is not affected by the country's population growth or by the country's belonging to one of the four groups by per capita income. The impact of migration processes on gender equality requires an in-depth and additional analysis based on data showing the impact of migration movements influenced by the war between Russia and Ukraine. Background & Objective: To evaluate fertility outcomes in infertile women with severe endometriosis who underwent Frozen embryo transfer (FET) after laparoscopic surgery and assess the optimal time interval between laparoscopy and FET. Materials & Methods: Number of 215 females with advanced-stage endometriosis were included in this retrospective cohort study. At first embryo were then laparoscopic surgery was performed. Patients received gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH agonist) for the next three months after the laparoscopic surgery. FET was scheduled during the next several time-points after the laparoscopic surgery. The results of treatment such as live birth, the interval between the operation and pregnancy, improved dysmenorrhea/dyspareunia, and post-operative complications were evaluated. Results: A total of 215 patients with a mean ± SD age of 34.33 ± 6.62 were included, among which, 143 cases (86.2%) had no past medical history. Ninety-three individuals (44%) were referred for the first IVF procedure. The mean ± SD of the infertility period was 4.71 ± 5.43 years. The mean ± SD number of frozen embryos was 2.53 ± 3.36 and the period between the laparoscopic intervention and IVF was 1.58 ± 2.65 months. Conclusion: Women with severe endometriosis may benefit from embryo freezing before laparoscopic surgery then FET. The perception of the value of children (VOC) can elucidate why individuals consider it beneficial to have children by uncovering their subjective intentions and experiences regarding their fertility decisions. Using VOC perceptions to understand fertility change in the modernization process, this qualitative study explores how parents' VOC change meshes with China's socioeconomic and cultural contexts. This article examines intergenerational VOC evolution under the support and constraints of socioeconomic environments and cultural norms. Grandparents, embedded in the rural economy and traditional culture, exhibit economic/utilitarian and social/normative VOC. Young parents, living, and having grown up in urban economic and modernized cultural contexts, recognize emotional/psychological VOC for fertility intention. Migrant parents living in urban economies but bound by traditional culture believe that social/normative VOC is important for fertility intention. BACKGROUND: The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett), is an invasive Tephritidae pest with robust fertility. The male accessory glands (MAGs) form a vital organ that ensures insect reproductive efficiency. Most of the secreted proteins by MAGs exhibit a male bias expression. Takeout, one of these proteins, is abundantly present in the MAGs of many insects. RESULTS: In this study, we identified 32 takeout genes in Z. cucurbitae. The phylogenetic analysis and multiple sequence alignment results showed that Zctakeout1 is the most related homolog to the MAGs‐specific takeout in Tephritidae. The real‐time quantitative PCR results showed that Zctakeout1 was exclusively expressed in the male adult stage, and its expression level gradually increased with the increase in age and then remained stable at the sexually matured stage. The distribution among tissues demonstrated the specific expression of Zctakeout1 in the MAGs, and fluorescence immunohistochemical results confirmed the presence of Zctakeout1 in close proximity to binuclear cells of the mesoderm epidermal MAGs. In continuation, CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing was employed, resulting in successfully generating a homozygous strain with an +8 bp insertion. The mating experiments with the Zctakeout1−/− males resulted in significant reductions in both the mating rate and egg production of females. CONCLUSION: These findings prove that the MAGs‐specific Zctakeout1 is essential in regulating fecundity in female Z. cucurbitae fruit flies. Fundamental fertility changes in developed countries and persistently low fertility rates are increasingly being interpreted using concepts of gender equality, gender equity, and gender revolution. This article analyzes links between gender role attitudes and fertility in Lithuania between 1990–2017 from a comparative perspective. Lithuania is compared to Sweden and Estonia, as well as Austria, France, and Italy. Based on seven data sets, the analysis is done using cluster analysis and binary logistic regression approaches. The findings reveal country-specific differences and similarities. First, in most countries, those who support the most traditional attitudes toward gender roles are the likeliest to have children. Second, Lithuania is the most traditional society; it is the slowest of the countries analyzed to transition to egalitarianism, and its gender role attitudes that significantly affect fertility are changing. Finally, in some cases, in the most traditional society, Lithuania, and the most egalitarian, Sweden, a new trend is emerging, whereby those who have supported non-traditional attitudes toward gender roles are more likely to have children. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most prevalent autoimmune disease in reproductive years, exhibits a higher incidence in females, suggesting involvement of estrogens, genetics and environmental factors in disease onset. Literature shows smaller families in RA patients, driving increased interest in Assisted Reproductive Techniques. This review elucidates how immunotolerance mechanisms contribute to favorable pregnancy outcomes in RA, emphasizing the need for a careful pregnancy planning to mitigate fetal complications and postnatal flares, which surpass those in the general population. A thorough medication evaluation, orchestrated by a multidisciplinary team, is imperative during pregnancy, weighing potential teratogenic effects against safer alternatives to balance medication safety with disease control. A systematic literature search on PubMed and MEDLINE, using specific terms, covered relevant academic journals up to the latest date. This narrative review comprehensively addresses pregnancy-related considerations in RA patients, prioritizing meticulous disease management with pregnancy and breastfeeding-compatible drugs in line with the latest recommendations and registry data. The focus remains on evaluating glucocorticoids, conventional, and biological disease-modifying drugs for compatibility during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Good cattle reproductive performance is essential for livestock productivity. Farmers are highly dependent on the success of productive outputs to support their livelihoods. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, optimal reproduction of cows and bulls is comparatively less well defined, with information on key reproductive parameters and reproductive management often not available. The aim of this study was to collate and synthesise the recent published evidence on cattle reproductive performance in selected sub-Saharan countries. Systematic mapping methodology was used, with searches conducted for both cow and bull reproductive performance in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, for the period 2012–2022, in English language. Search returns were screened for relevance at title and abstract, and full-text levels, based on the research question criteria. A substantial number of studies were identified for cows (n = 133), but only very few for bulls (n = 11). A large proportion of reported studies have been conducted in Ethiopia, with relatively few from the other countries, and most studies published between 2014 and 2016, and in 2021. Certain reproductive parameters received more attention than others; calving interval was reported in 86 studies, while culling due to infertility was reported in eight studies. The study highlights where research is being conducted in this area, and importantly where there is a gap, in particular on bull reproductive performance. While there were a range of values reported for cow reproductive parameters, the values were reasonable, indicating that it is possible to have good reproductive performance in LMICs. This study analyzes the interactions between population dynamics with differential fertility the intergenerational mobility and economic development. Population dynamics with differential fertility exerts the following two effects on the economy: (i) the change in the population size of the entire economy influences the mobility through changing in the composition of workers and (ii) the decreasing/increasing transfer per child influences the mobility. A sufficient increase in the population growth increases the population size and leads to a significant decline in the transfers per child; this phenomenon contributes toward the cyclical behavior of mobility and income inequality. On the other hand, when a population growth decreases, the mobility monotonically approaches toward steady state. These results are consistent with some empirical evidence. Hence, this study demonstrates that the population dynamics with differential fertility leads to a difference in transitional dynamics of intergenerational mobility and the process of economic development. This paper estimates the causal effect of having young children aged 0–5 years on mothers’ labour force participation in rural India. To address the potential endogeneity in the fertility decision, I exploit Indian families’ preference for having sons. I leverage exogenous variation in the gender of older children aged 6 + years as an instrumental variable for having younger children aged 0–5 years in the family. IV estimates show that the mothers’ participation is significantly reduced by 9.9% due to the presence of young children aged 0–5 years in the household, with the negative effect mostly driven by mothers belonging to the highest income quartile; mothers with high education; and mothers residing in nuclear families. The findings highlight the need for investment in high-skilled jobs and formal childcare facilities to encourage mothers’ labour supply. Using the testable implications for the generalizability of LATE discussed in Angrist (The Economic Journal, 114: C52 C83, 2004), I show that the estimated causal effect is homogenous across compliers, always takers, and never takers and thus, generalizable to the whole population of interest. Aging in men is associated with diminished sperm quality and a higher incidence of altered fetal development and miscarriage in resultant pregnancies. We used a mouse model of advanced paternal age to characterize embryonic development in older male mice and tested whether pre-conception treatment with the mitochondrial activator BGP-15 improves reproductive outcomes in old males. Like older men, reproductively old male mice had higher levels of sperm DNA damage and delayed pre-implantation development, associated with a reduced fetal weight and placental weight. Analysis of neonatal outcomes of in vivo-conceived offspring found that pups sired by old males were smaller, had delayed locomotor development, and increased mortality. BGP-15 treatment for 5 days prior to conception reduced sperm DNA oxidation levels and improved on-time embryo development after IVF and pup survival. BGP-15 treatment for 3 weeks prior to conception improved on-time pre-implantation embryo development and fetal viability and increased fetal size in pregnancies sired by old males. These results validate that ageing negatively affects male fertility and offspring physiology and indicates that pre-conception treatment with BGP-15 has the potential to improve sperm quality as well as early embryo development and post-natal health. This article discusses a study on the effects of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) on neonatal birth weight in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and high body mass index (BMI). The study found that the length of pregnancy was the only factor associated with newborn weight, regardless of PCOS status. Factors such as weight gain during pregnancy and nutritional variables did not have a significant effect on newborn weight. Considering a bargaining equilibrium of intergenerational exchange within a family, we study the effects of an increase in the bargaining power of children on the fertility rate, informal long-term care provision, and intergenerational transfers within the family. Most economically developed countries have experienced both fertility rate decline and life longevity extension in the last several decades. Under such circumstances, the bargaining power of each child apparently becomes greater if needs for elderly long-term care do not decrease. We demonstrate that, in a family bargaining equilibrium, a higher bargaining weight of a child results in fewer children and greater intergenerational transfer from the parent, although the family long-term care level remains unchanged for a given wage rate. SUMMARY: Good semen quality is a vital tool for the rapid improvement of fertility by allowing maximum use of genetically improved roosters. Evaluation of the best quality semen for different chicken breeds increases artificial insemination efficiency and helps to improve chicken production through the wider usage of genetically superior roosters. The main aim of this systematic review is to summarise the fertility responses and semen quality parameters of different poultry strains to provide a summarised clue for breeders working on indigenous poultry breeds. There was a difference in semen volume per ejaculation between breeds' fertility; however, there was similar semen volume for both Bar Plymouth Rock and Sasso breeds (0.8 mL). The semen volume of Bar Plymouth Rock ranged from 0.3 to 0.8 mL. There was a maximum (86%) of sperm motility in indigenous chickens from Chung University and a lower motility for indigenous chickens at the University of Urmia (29.6%). Viable sperm for Venda chicken was higher (96.8%) than the other breeds, and its performance ranged from 46.7% to 96.8%; however, there was the lowest (13%) sperm viability for Hubbard rooster. The sperm viability for White Leghorn also ranged from 49.7% to 82.5%. The abnormality of sperm was higher (72.6%) for the Rhode Island Red breed but lowest (3.2%) for indigenous chicken from Taiwan and 7% for Dahlem Red. Turkey's breed was superior for spermatozoa concentration (10.6 × 109/mL) than other rooster breeds. The lowest (1.2 × 109/mL) sperm concentration was reported for Beijing chickens. In terms of the fertility rate, there was a higher (93%) fertility rate for White Leghorn (ranging from 81.7% to 93%) and the lowest (50.6%) fertility rate for South African Naked Neck (ranging from 50.6% to 55.7%. The observed difference in fertility and semen characteristics across the breeds was mainly attributed to the genetic, age, nutrition type, management difference, production type, agroecology difference, collection frequency and collection interval. Gary Becker founded two workshops: the Labor Workshop at Columbia University in 1958 and the Applications of Economics Workshop at Chicago in 1970. At Columbia, Becker ran the Labor Workshop for more than a decade; Jacob Mincer co-directed it for about half of that time and then became its principal director. The workshops fostered novel applications of economics to areas like household economics, labor economics and economics of human capital. These workshops had a relatively high proportion of women participating in them. We find that in the years 1960–1980, when Becker and Mincer published pioneering research in household economics, the odds that a PhD in Economics was obtained by a woman were 5.6 times higher among those who had participated in any Becker-founded workshop than among those who had participated in another workshop at Columbia or Chicago. The odds that a graduate was a woman were higher for Columbia than for Chicago and were highest for the Columbia workshop after Becker left for Chicago and Mincer became its principal director. These findings are consistent with women at that time showing a relatively strong interest in household economics combined with the novelty and innovation of the work, the topics covered and the approach taken in the Becker-founded workshops. With the relaxation of the One-Child Policy in China, women are likely to face more conflicts between childcare and work. How to boost the fertility rate and facilitate the female labor supply has become an urgent issue in China. With data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) 1993–2015, this study explored the impact of having more than one child on women's informal employment decisions using three-equation models. The models took into account the sample selection of working-age women in the labor force and the endogeneity of fertility decisions jointly. The results showed that women with more than one child were more likely to choose informal employment. The positive impact of having more children on women's probability of informal employment was different for each group. Notably, the positive impact was stronger for women with low educational attainment, rural hukou, and especially for rural‒urban migrants. These results were robust to several alternative specifications. These findings suggest that with more children, women in China choose informal employment as a way of balancing work and family. Skeletal age markers are often used to estimate age‐at‐death to reconstruct population survivorship in the past, which is essential to draw conclusions about population health, fertility, and mortality. Transition Analysis age estimation was developed to address common issues facing traditional age estimation methods such as age mimicry and broad ranges for middle and older aged adults. However, some studies have shown Transition Analysis' limitations in overcoming these challenges, with regards to the method's accuracy and bias when applied at the individual‐level. It was previously found that the method performed poorly in a sample from the Hamann‐Todd Osteological Collection due to a series of factors. This study re‐examines the application of Transition Analysis (ADBOU) age estimation in a sample from the Hamann‐Todd Collection for reconstructing the survivorship profile of this skeletal sample. Although Transition Analysis is argued to be better suited for reconstructing trends in population mortality compared to traditional age estimation methods, results of Kaplan–Meier and log rank tests show that Transition Analysis produced significantly different survival curves compared to the known survival curves for White males (χ2 = 6.828, p = 0.009) and females (χ2 = 11.270, p = 0.001), but not for Black males (χ2 = 1.363, p = 0.243) and females (χ2 = 0.071, p = 0.790). Age‐at‐death distributions between the estimated maximum likelihoods and known ages also differed significantly (t = 4.249, p < 0.001). Therefore, caution should be employed when drawing conclusions from trends in survivorship based on skeletal age estimates, even when using more recently developed methods such as Transition Analysis, as the informative priors in ADBOU may not be accurate for all populations. SUMMARY BARENTSZ (BTZ), a core component of the exon junction complex, regulates diverse developmental processes in animals. However, its evolutionary and developmental roles in plants remain elusive. Here, we revealed that three groups of paralogous BTZ genes existed in Poaceae, and Group 2 underwent loss‐of‐function mutations during evolution. They showed surprisingly low (~33%) sequence identities, implying functional divergence. Two genes retained in rice, OsBTZ1 and OsBTZ3, were edited; however, the resultant osbtz1 and osbtz3 mutants showed similar floral morphological and functional defects at a low frequency. When growing under low‐temperature conditions, developmental abnormalities became pronounced, and new floral variations were induced. In particular, stamen and carpel functionality was impaired in these rice btz mutants. The double‐gene mutant osbtz1/3 shared these floral defects with an increased frequency, which was further induced under low‐temperature conditions. OsBTZs interacted with OsMADS7 and OsMADS8, and the floral expressions of the OsTGA10 and MADS‐box genes were correlatively altered in these osbtz mutants and responded to low‐temperature treatment. These novel findings demonstrate that two highly diverged OsBTZs are required to maintain floral developmental stability under low‐temperature conditions, and play an integral role in male and female fertility, thus providing new insights into the indispensable roles of BTZ genes in plant development and adaptive evolution. This article, published in the Journal of Experimental Botany, explores the role of a DEAD-box RNA helicase called OsRH52A in the development of the female gametophyte and seed setting in rice. The study found that loss of OsRH52A led to abnormal development of the embryo sac, resulting in low seed setting. The article also discusses the importance of normal development of male and female gametophytes for successful fertilization and seed production, as well as the various factors that can cause degeneration or defects in these gametophytes. Background Objectives Materials and methods Results Conclusion Testicular cancer is the most common solid tumour among young men in the reproductive phase. After completing cancer treatment, up to 77% of cancer survivors report an interest in paternity after completing cancer treatment. To preserve fertility, most guidelines recommend that physicians should counsel their patients about sperm cryopreservation before initiating gonadotoxic therapy. However, few studies have assessed fertility parameters after testicular cancer therapies over the last 20 years.To close the gap of data regarding gonadotoxicity of testicular cancer therapies to enable more accurate counselling regarding fertility preservation.A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline, Embase and Cochrane until December 2022. The systematic review included studies of men who had undergone all types of unilateral testicular cancer treatment, whereas the meta‐analysis excluded studies with unspecified treatments, less than 10 patients for outcome evaluation or rare tumours. Infertility (i.e. azoospermia, failure to achieve paternity or the usage of cryosperm) was defined as outcome.The qualitative analysis included 30 studies with a total of 13,718 men after unilateral testicular cancer. Treatment comprised active surveillance after unilateral orchidectomy (32.7%), radiotherapy (23.1%), standard‐ or low‐dose chemotherapy (33.7%) and high‐dose chemotherapy (1.4%). Post‐treatment spermiograms were analysed in 17 studies. The quantitative synthesis included 23 studies, revealing an overall pooled prevalence of infertility (95% CI) of 14% (9%–21%). Azoospermia occurred in 8% (6%–12%). For good‐prognosis patients who received standard therapy, the overall prevalence of infertility was only 4% (2%–10%).So far, this very first meta‐analysis of overall infertility prevalence provides the best approximation of fertility prognosis for men who have undergone testicular cancer therapy. Despite the low prevalence of infertility, it is still recommended to undergo sperm cryopreservation because of the uncertainty of the subsequent therapy and the lack of large longitudinal data on individual treatment effects. Background: Israel's pronatalist cultures result in a social expectation to have children and drive Israel's fertility rate of 2.9. Israeli policy reflects this through funding unlimited fertility treatment up to two children. Societal pressure to have children exacerbates challenges of fertility treatment. Furthermore, the lack of financial burden creates a culture of perseverance following treatment failures. Whilst the experiences of Israeli women using fertility treatment have been studied, the experiences of women who migrated to Israel and were therefore raised in a different society have not. This study aimed to address this gap in knowledge. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to investigate the experiences of 13 English-speaking women who utilised Israeli state funded fertility treatment. Participants were located across Israel and were recruited using purposive sampling through social media. Data was analysed using framework analysis. Results: Despite not being aimed at specific ethnic or religious groups, all respondents were Jewish. Three themes were identified: 1. Systemic factors: The lack of financial burden was positive, however, participants struggled to navigate the bureaucratic healthcare system, especially when experiencing a language barrier. 2. Influence of others: Encountering a cold bedside manner alongside contending with the expectations of a pronatalist society was challenging. Participants utilised support from other migrants who appreciated the same culture shock. Understanding of healthcare professionals regarding shared religious values further improved treatment experiences. 3. Impact of journey: Participants often withdrew socially and the treatment process implicated upon their lives, jobs and relationships. Conclusion: Navigating a bureaucratic system and pronatalist society are difficulties associated with fertility treatment in Israel. The lack of financial burden and an understanding of religious and cultural beliefs by healthcare providers improved treatment experience. Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is defined as onset of menopause characterized by amenorrhea, hypergonadotropism, and hypoestrogenism, before the age of 40 years. The POI is increasing, which seriously affects the quality of patients' life. Due to its diversity of pathogenic factors, complex pathogenesis and limited treatment methods, the search for finding effective treatment of POI has become a hotspot. Stem cells are characterized by the ability of self-renewal and differentiation and play an important role in the regeneration of injured tissues, which is therapy is expected to be used in the treatment of POI. AbstractKalmegh is an important medicinal crop because of the most important biologically active phyto-chemical called andrographolide. Production of higher herbage yields with appropriate quality in terms of andrographolide is largely dependent upon efficient nutrient management. This study aimed to assess the effect of organic manures application and variable nitrogen rates on growth, yield, andrographolide content and total antioxidant activity of Kalmegh. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three levels of organic manures [M1- Control, M2- vermicompost @ 5 t ha−1 and M3- poultry manure @ 5 t ha−1] and four fertility levels [F1- 0: 50: 50, F2- 50: 50: 50, F3- 75 (37.5 + 37.5): 50: 50 and F4- 75: 50: 50 kg ha−1 N, P2O5 and K2O, respectively] replicated thrice. The highest dry herbage yields and andrographolide content of kalmegh were recorded with vermicompost @ 5 t ha−1 + 75 (37.5 + 37.5): 50: 50 N, P2O5 and K2O kg ha−1 followed by poultry manure @ 5 t ha−1 + 75 (37.5 + 37.5): 50: 50 N, P2O5 and K2O kg ha−1 during both the years while, lower yields due to control. Dry herbage and andrographolide yield were found to be highest in M2×F3 compared with M1×F1. Our study concluded that the application of vermicompost @ 5 t ha−1 along with 75 kg ha−1 N in two splits and 50 kg ha−1of each P2O5 and K2O resulted higher yield and andrographolide content which, would provide better soil nutrient status in sustainable manner without affecting ecological balances. Recent research has established existence of a correlation between women's education and fertility, suggesting that they share similar risk factors. However, in many studies, the two variables were analysed separately, which could bias the conclusions by undermining the apparent correlations of such paired outcomes. In this article, the univariate and bivariate Poisson regression models were applied to nationally representative sample of 24,562 women from the 2015-16 Malawi demographic and health survey to examine the risk factors of women's education levels and fertility. The R software version 4.1.2 was used for the analyses. The results showed that estimates from the bivariate Poisson model were consistent with those obtained from the separate univariate Poisson models. The sizes of estimates of coefficients, their standard errors, p-values, and directions were comparable in both bivariate and univariate Poisson models. Using either the univariate or bivariate Poisson model, it was found that the age of a woman at first sexual experience, her current age, household wealth index, and contraceptive usage were significantly associated with both the woman's schooling and fertility. The study further revealed that ethnicity, religion, and region of residence impacted education level only and not fertility. Similarly, marital status and occupation impacted fertility only and not education. The study also found that higher education levels were linked to a lower number of children, with a strong negative correlation of -0.62 between the two variables. The study recommends using bivariate Poisson regression for analysing paired count response data, when there is an apparent covariance between the outcome variables. The results suggest that efforts by policymakers to achieve the desired women's sexual and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa should be intertwined with improving women's and girls' education attainment in the region. In this paper, we combine administrative data for Spain from 2010 to 2018 with meteorological data, to identify the effect of daily mean temperature on fertility. We demonstrate for Spain that hot days (≥25°C) decrease the total fertility rate nine months after exposure. Moreover, we do not observe any substantial heterogeneities in the effect of heat by mother’s age, mother’s educational attainment, sex of the newborn, climatic area, or air conditioning penetration. Our results suggest that climate change may be altering the seasonal distribution of births and affect fertility rates in a context with low fertility and rapid population ageing. Three new populations of the invasive New Zealand mud snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, have been discovered in central Chile, increasing the documented records in the country to 23. Only females were observed in the present study. Significant differences in shell length and fecundity were found among populations. The size of the snails was less than 6 mm, while fecundity varied from 0 to 45 offspring per snail. A significant correlation was found between adult shell length and brood size in one of the three populations discovered. Objective Background Method Results Conclusion This article aims to compare adult sibling ties of stepsiblings to the ties of full and half‐siblings in divorced families, widowed families, and single‐parent families.Siblings are one of the most stable sources of attachment and companionship over the life course and function as important providers of practical and emotional support when going through important life transitions. Due to a steep rise in divorce over the past decades and accompanied increases in remarriage and multipartner fertility, many adults nowadays not only have full siblings, but also half‐siblings and stepsiblings.Using a new module on adult sibling relationships and random‐ and fixed‐effects modeling (OKiN, N = 4506 dyads nested in N = 1742 respondents), we examine the quality of full, half, and stepsibling ties in adulthood and test the main mechanisms driving a potential stepgap in sibling ties: (1) the (absence) of a shared genetic relatedness and (2) the amount of time shared in the same parental household.The weaker bonds adults, on average, have with their stepsiblings compared to their biological (full and half) siblings are largely explained by the shorter period of time they have lived together during childhood. Nevertheless, a substantial gap remains.Our results confirm that a stepgap in sibling closeness, contact, and support is visible, but substantially reduced once shared time is considered. Artificial insemination (AI) success in bovine reproduction is vital for the cattle industry's economic sustainability and for advancing the understanding of reproductive physiology. Identify high-fertile animals' fertility is a complex task due to multifactorial traits, including hormonal, age-related, and body condition factors. Early high-fertility identification is crucial for timely interventions and enhancing AI success. In this study, we present the potential use of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy on blood serum for early identification of high-fertile Nellore female cows for AI protocols. Blood serum FTIR spectra were obtained from Nellore female cows before AI. FTIR spectra underwent data analysis and the results demonstrated successful discrimination between animals that exhibit pregnant and non-pregnant diagnoses 30 days after AI. FTIR spectra revealed consistent vibrational modes, emphasizing Amide I and II bands. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) effectively segregated groups based on molecular information. Linear SVM with C = 10 and 4 PCs achieved 100% accuracy in the group classification. This innovative approach using FTIR spectroscopy and ML algorithms offers a promising means of high-fertile cow identification, potentially improving AI outcomes in Nellore cattle.
