We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM on-board triggers and sub-threshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma-rays from binary black hole mergers.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Multi-messenger searches for BNS and NSBH mergers are currently one of the most exciting areas of astronomy. The search for joint electromagnetic and neutrino counterparts to GWs has resumed with O4. To support this effort, public semi-automated data products are sent in near real-time and include localization and source properties to guide complementary observations. In preparation for O4, we have conducted a study using a simulated population of compact binaries and a MDC in the form of a real-time replay to optimize and profile the software infrastructure and scientific deliverables. End-to-end performance was tested, including data ingestion, running online search pipelines, performing annotations, and issuing alerts to the astrophysics community. We present an overview of the low-latency infrastructure and the performance of the data products that are now being released during O4 based on the MDC. We report the expected median latency for the preliminary alert of full bandwidth searches (29.5s) and show consistency and accuracy of released data products using the MDC. For the first time, we report the expected median latency for triggers from early warning searches (-3.1s), which are new in O4 and target neutron star mergers during inspiral phase. This paper provides a performance overview for LVK low-latency alert infrastructure and data products using the MDC and serves as a useful reference for the interpretation of O4 detections.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We develop a robust and self-consistent framework to extract and classify gravitational wave candidates from noisy data, for the purpose of assisting in real-time multi-messenger follow-ups during LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA's fourth observing run~(O4). Our formalism implements several improvements to the low latency calculation of the probability of astrophysical origin~(\PASTRO{}), so as to correctly account for various factors such as the sensitivity change between observing runs, and the deviation of the recovered template waveform from the true gravitational wave signal that can strongly bias said calculation. We demonstrate the high accuracy with which our new formalism recovers and classifies gravitational wave triggers, by analyzing replay data from previous observing runs injected with simulated sources of different categories. We show that these improvements enable the correct identification of the majority of simulated sources, many of which would have otherwise been misclassified. We carry out the aforementioned analysis by implementing our formalism through the \GSTLAL{} search pipeline even though it can be used in conjunction with potentially any matched filtering pipeline. Armed with robust and self-consistent \PASTRO{} values, the \GSTLAL{} pipeline can be expected to provide accurate source classification information for assisting in multi-messenger follow-up observations to gravitational wave alerts sent out during O4., Comment: v2 upload was accidental. revert back to v1

Computer Science - Formal Languages and Automata Theory - Abstract
Using FSA and the construction algorithm, we generated a list of surjective span 6 cellular automata as a modest sample for our FDense program. We wanted to experimentally quantify Mike Boyle's conjecture which states that the jointly periodic points of one-dimensional cellular automata are dense. Furthermore, we wanted to know if the cardinality of cellular automata on N symbols is greater than or equal to the square root of N.

BACKGROUND: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) of the breast is known for high risk of late recurrence, yet some patients still recur within 5 years of diagnosis. Determining factors associated with early/late recurrence could help tailor treatment and surveillance strategies. METHODS: Using an institutional database, we evaluated patients with ILC and ≥ 5 years of follow-up or recurrence within 5 years. We used multivariate logistic regression and the Kaplan-Meier method to evaluate which clinicopathologic features and treatment strategies were associated with recurrence 3 positive nodes (32.4% vs. 9.11%, p > 0.0001), and more aggressive tumor biology (low/negative progesterone receptor expression, higher grade, and higher Ki67). Late recurrence was associated with younger age (mean 55.6 vs. 59.2 years, p = 0.037) and elevated body mass index (BMI > 25 kg/m2 in 60.1.0% vs. 45.4%, p = 0.021). Omission of adjuvant endocrine therapy or radiotherapy after lumpectomy conferred increased risk of early rather than late recurrence. CONCLUSION: Factors related to tumor aggressiveness and treatment were associated with early recurrence, whereas patient related factors were related to late recurrence. These data may help guide treatment strategies and surveillance approaches for patients with ILC.

A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy complicated by factors that can adversely affect the outcomes of the mother or the infant. Health insurers use algorithms to identify members who would benefit from additional clinical support. This work presents the implementation of a real-world ML-based system to assist care managers in identifying pregnant patients at risk of complications. In this retrospective evaluation study, we developed a novel hybrid-ML classifier to predict whether patients are pregnant and trained a standard classifier using claims data from a health insurance company in the US to predict whether a patient will develop pregnancy complications. These models were developed in cooperation with the care management team and integrated into a user interface with explanations for the nurses. The proposed models outperformed commonly used claim codes for the identification of pregnant patients at the expense of a manageable false positive rate. Our risk complication classifier shows that we can accurately triage patients by risk of complication. Our approach and evaluation are guided by human-centric design. In user studies with the nurses, they preferred the proposed models over existing approaches.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy IC 4329A. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the source for ~500 ks, supported by XMM-Newton (~60 ks) and NuSTAR (~80 ks) exposures. We detect polarisation in the 2-8 keV band with 2.97 sigma confidence. We report a polarisation degree of $3.3\pm1.1$ per cent and a polarisation angle of $78\pm10$ degrees (errors are 1 sigma confidence). The X-ray polarisation is consistent with being aligned with the radio jet, albeit partially due to large uncertainties on the radio position angle. We jointly fit the spectra from the three observatories to constrain the presence of a relativistic reflection component. From this, we obtain constraints on the inclination angle to the inner disc (< 39 degrees at 99 per cent confidence) and the disc inner radius (< 11 gravitational radii at 99 per cent confidence), although we note that modelling systematics in practice add to the quoted statistical error. Our spectro-polarimetric modelling indicates that the 2-8 keV polarisation is consistent with being dominated by emission directly observed from the X-ray corona, but the polarisation of the reflection component is completely unconstrained. Our constraints on viewer inclination and polarisation degree tentatively favour more asymmetric, possibly out-flowing, coronal geometries that produce more highly polarised emission, but the coronal geometry is unconstrained at the 3 sigma level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 9 figures

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
Starting from May 2023, the LIGO Scientific, Virgo and KAGRA Collaboration is planning to conduct the fourth observing run with improved detector sensitivities and an expanded detector network including KAGRA. Accordingly, it is vital to optimize the detection algorithm of low-latency search pipelines, increasing their sensitivities to gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences. In this work, we discuss several new features developed for ranking statistics of GstLAL-based inspiral pipeline, which mainly consist of: the signal contamination removal, the bank-$\xi^2$ incorporation, the upgraded $\rho-\xi^2$ signal model and the integration of KAGRA. An injection study demonstrates that these new features improve the pipeline's sensitivity by approximately 15% to 20%, paving the way to further multi-messenger observations during the upcoming observing run., Comment: 13pages, 6figures

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. This is below the critical threshold, suggesting that Alfv\'en waves are an important driver of coronal heating., Comment: 1,002 authors, 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, published by The Astrophysical Journal on 2023-05-09, volume 948, page 71

GstLAL is a stream-based matched-filtering search pipeline aiming at the prompt discovery of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences such as the mergers of black holes and neutron stars. Over the past three observation runs by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (LVK) collaboration, the GstLAL search pipeline has participated in several tens of gravitational wave discoveries. The fourth observing run (O4) is set to begin in May 2023 and is expected to see the discovery of many new and interesting gravitational wave signals which will inform our understanding of astrophysics and cosmology. We describe the current configuration of the GstLAL low-latency search and show its readiness for the upcoming observation run by presenting its performance on a mock data challenge. The mock data challenge includes 40 days of LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, and Virgo strain data along with an injection campaign in order to fully characterize the performance of the search. We find an improved performance in terms of detection rate and significance estimation as compared to that observed in the O3 online analysis. The improvements are attributed to several incremental advances in the likelihood ratio ranking statistic computation and the method of background estimation., Comment: 19 pages, 21 figures

Gravitational lensing by massive objects along the line of sight to the source causes distortions of gravitational wave-signals; such distortions may reveal information about fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics. In this work, we have extended the search for lensing signatures to all binary black hole events from the third observing run of the LIGO--Virgo network. We search for repeated signals from strong lensing by 1) performing targeted searches for subthreshold signals, 2) calculating the degree of overlap amongst the intrinsic parameters and sky location of pairs of signals, 3) comparing the similarities of the spectrograms amongst pairs of signals, and 4) performing dual-signal Bayesian analysis that takes into account selection effects and astrophysical knowledge. We also search for distortions to the gravitational waveform caused by 1) frequency-independent phase shifts in strongly lensed images, and 2) frequency-dependent modulation of the amplitude and phase due to point masses. None of these searches yields significant evidence for lensing. Finally, we use the non-detection of gravitational-wave lensing to constrain the lensing rate based on the latest merger-rate estimates and the fraction of dark matter composed of compact objects., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We numerically solve the effective loop quantum cosmology dynamics for the vacuum Bianchi type II and type IX spacetimes, in particular studying how the Kasner exponents evolve across the loop quantum cosmology bounce. We find that when the spatial curvature is negligible at the bounce then the Kasner exponents transform according to the same simple equation as for a Bianchi type I spacetime in effective loop quantum cosmology, while there are departures from this transformation rule in cases where the spatial curvature is significant during the bounce. We also use high-precision numerics to compute the evolution of a Bianchi type IX spacetime through multiple bounces and recollapses, and find indications of chaotic behaviour. Interestingly, the numerics indicate that it is during the classical recollapse, and not the loop quantum cosmology bounce, that nearby solutions diverge most strongly., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. v2: Clarifications and references added

Passive radio frequency (PRF)-based indoor positioning systems (IPS) have attracted researchers' attention due to their low price, easy and customizable configuration, and non-invasive design. This paper proposes a PRF-based three-dimensional (3D) indoor positioning system (PIPS), which is able to use signals of opportunity (SoOP) for positioning and also capture a scenario signature. PIPS passively monitors SoOPs containing scenario signatures through a single receiver. Moreover, PIPS leverages the Dynamic Data Driven Applications System (DDDAS) framework to devise and customize the sampling frequency, enabling the system to use the most impacted frequency band as the rated frequency band. Various regression methods within three ensemble learning strategies are used to train and predict the receiver position. The PRF spectrum of 60 positions is collected in the experimental scenario, and three criteria are applied to evaluate the performance of PIPS. Experimental results show that the proposed PIPS possesses the advantages of high accuracy, configurability, and robustness., Comment: DDDAS 2022

Abstract Sex differences and age-related changes in the human heart at the tissue, cell, and molecular level have been well-documented and many may be relevant for cardiovascular disease. However, how molecular programs within individual cell types vary across individuals by age and sex remains poorly characterized. To better understand this variation, we performed single-nucleus combinatorial indexing (sci) ATAC- and RNA-Seq in human heart samples from nine donors. We identify hundreds of differentially expressed genes by age and sex and find epigenetic signatures of variation in ATAC-Seq data in this discovery cohort. We then scale up our single-cell RNA-Seq analysis by combining our data with five recently published single nucleus RNA-Seq datasets of healthy adult hearts. We find variation such as metabolic alterations by sex and immune changes by age in differential expression tests, as well as alterations in abundance of cardiomyocytes by sex and neurons with age. In addition, we compare our adult-derived ATAC-Seq profiles to analogous fetal cell types to identify putative developmental-stage-specific regulatory factors. Finally, we train predictive models of cell-type-specific RNA expression levels utilizing ATAC-Seq profiles to link distal regulatory sequences to promoters, quantifying the predictive value of a simple TF-to-expression regulatory grammar and identifying cell-type-specific TFs. Our analysis represents the largest single-cell analysis of cardiac variation by age and sex to date and provides a resource for further study of healthy cardiac variation and transcriptional regulation at single-cell resolution.

Science - Abstract
Abstract Silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are emerging as promising quantum emitters in applications such as quantum communication and quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a sub-μs pulsed annealing treatment that dramatically increases the photoluminescence of SiV centers in diamond. Using a silane-functionalized adamantane precursor and a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, the temperature and energy conditions required to form SiV centers in diamond were mapped out via an optical thermometry system with an accuracy of ±50 K and a 1 μs temporal resolution. Annealing scheme studies reveal that pulsed annealing can obviously minimize the migration of SiV centers out of the diamond lattice, and a 2.5-fold increase in the number of emitting centers was achieved using a series of 200-ns pulses at a 50 kHz repetition rate via acousto-optic modulation. Our study provides a novel pulsed annealing treatment approach to improve the efficiency of the creation of SiV centers in diamond.

Abstract Background Developing an understanding of the negative impact of discrimination is critical when examining the suicidality of Black young adults in the US. Suicide rates among Black young adults have increased at alarming rates. One of the reasons for this increase is the disparities related to access to mental health services, which has long-term health consequences. This study addresses a significant gap in the literature by examining associations between experiences of everyday discrimination, attitudes towards mental health help-seeking attitudes, on the outcomes suicide ideation, planning to die by suicide, and suicide attempts. Methods The data came from a national study of the experiences of Black young adults regarding mental, physical, and sexual health. Participants were recruited from across the Midwestern region of the United States through Qualtrics Panels, an online survey delivery service used to recruit study participants. The total sample for this study was N = 362, and the average age of the sample was 21 (SD: 1.96). We used a logistic regression analysis to examine the role of everyday discrimination, mental health support-seeking attitudes, and covariates on the outcomes: suicide ideation, planning to die by committing suicide, and suicide attempts. Results Black young adults with positive mental health help-seeking attitudes were 34% less likely to attempt suicide (OR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.96) and 35% less likely to experience suicide ideation (OR = 0.65; 95% CI: 0.47, 0.89). However, those young adults who experienced discrimination daily were more likely to report having attempted suicide (OR = 1.70; 95% CI: 1.34, 2.15). Conclusions Our findings offer valuable insights into the complex interplay between experiences of discrimination, attitudes toward seeking mental health support, and suicidal behaviors. However, our research also underscores how experiences of discrimination can significantly exacerbate feelings of isolation, hopelessness, and inadequacy, further contributing to suicidal behaviors in this population. By promoting positive mental health help-seeking behaviors, actively addressing discrimination, and applying an intersectional approach to suicide prevention efforts, we can take significant strides towards building a more supportive and inclusive society. This approach aims to empower individuals to seek help, reduce the risk of suicidal behaviors, and create a more welcoming environment for all members of our community.

Abstract The sequencing platform and workflow strongly influence microbial community analyses through potential errors at each step. Effective diagnostics and experimental controls are needed to validate data and improve reproducibility. This cross-laboratory study evaluates sources of variability and error at three main steps of a standardized amplicon sequencing workflow (DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction [PCR], and sequencing) using Oxford Nanopore MinION to analyze agricultural soils and a simple mock community. Variability in sequence results occurs at each step in the workflow with PCR errors and differences in library size greatly influencing diversity estimates. Common bioinformatic diagnostics and the mock community are ineffective at detecting PCR abnormalities. This work outlines several diagnostic checks and techniques to account for sequencing depth and ensure accuracy and reproducibility in soil community analyses. These diagnostics and the inclusion of a reference soil can help ensure data validity and facilitate the comparison of multiple sequencing runs within and between laboratories.

Background: The role of biceps tenodesis (BT) during open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) remains unclear. A subset of patients undergoing ORIF have persistent pain with unclear etiology. The purpose of our study was to compare outcomes of ORIF of PHFs with and without concomitant BT. We hypothesize patients undergoing BT at the time of ORIF will have improved patient-reported outcome scores with fewer secondary procedures related to treatment of the biceps. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, all patients undergoing ORIF for a PHF at a single level one trauma center from January 2019 to June 2022 were reviewed. Patients under the age of 18 were excluded. Primary outcomes were patient-reported outcomes measurement information system physical function, depression, and pain interference scores at 5 time points up to final follow-up. Secondary outcomes included total operative time, complications, subsequent procedures, steroid injections, and range of motion. Chi-square tests were performed for categorical values and paired t-tests for continuous variables. Results: 71 patients met inclusion criteria: 41 undergoing ORIF without BT and 30 undergoing ORIF with BT. Average follow-up was 11 months. There were no statistically significant differences in patient demographics between groups. There were no differences in patient-reported outcomes measurement information system scores at any time point postoperatively. At final follow-up patients in the ORIF with BT group had higher forward flexion than those who did not undergo BT (142 vs. 123 degrees, respectively, P

BackgroundAlthough investigators have shown associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and outcomes in breast cancer, there is a paucity of such data for invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), the second most common type of breast cancer. Herein we evaluated the relationship between SES with tumor features and outcomes in stage I to III patients with ILC.MethodsWe analyzed a prospectively maintained institutional ILC database and utilized the area deprivation index (ADI) to determine neighborhood adversity, an indicator of SES. We used Cox proportional hazards models in Stata 17.0 to evaluate relationships between ADI quintile (Q), race, body mass index (BMI), clinicopathologic features, treatment type, and event-free survival (EFS).ResultsOf 804 patients with ILC, 21.4% lived in neighborhoods classified as ADI Q1 (least resource-deprived) and 19.7% in Q5 (most resource-deprived). Higher deprivation was significantly associated with larger tumor size (3.6 cm in Q5 vs. 3.1 cm in Q1), increased presence of lymphovascular invasion (8.9% in Q5 vs. 6.7% in Q1), and decreased use of adjuvant endocrine therapy (67.1% in Q5 vs. 73.6% in Q1). On multivariable analysis, tumor size, receptor subtypes, and omission of adjuvant endocrine therapy were associated with reduced EFS.ConclusionsThese data show that patients with ILC and higher ADI experience more aggressive tumors and differences in treatment. More data evaluating the complex relationships between these factors is needed to optimize outcomes for patients with ILC, regardless of SES.ImpactADI is associated with differences in patients with ILC.

It is an assumption that physically active adults lead an overall healthy lifestyle. To examine this assumption, we administered a cross-sectional, web-based survey to a sample of young-to-middle-aged US adults between 18 and 49 who self-reported participation in at least one recreational sporting event in the past month. Logistic regressions were conducted to examine demographic characteristics associated with cancer risk and protective behaviors. Gender was represented equally (N = 938), and the average age was 32 years (SD: 8.4). Most participants reported >three days of moderate- to high-intensity physical activity (79%), but not meeting fruit and vegetable consumption guidelines (78%). Many reported current tobacco use (32%), binge drinking at least once in the past 30 days (62%), and suboptimal sun protection use (67%). Participation in lifestyle-related cancer risk and protective behaviors varied based on age, sex, education, routine doctor visits, perceived overall health, health-information-seeking behavior (how participants obtained health information), or team-based sport participation in regression models. Future interventions should be tailored to address varied cancer risk profiles among even physically active adults to encourage multiple healthy behavior changes.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in April of 2019 and lasting six months, O3b starting in November of 2019 and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in April of 2020 and lasting 2 weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. The main dataset, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

Amperometry is a commonly used electrochemical method for studying the process of exocytosis in real-time. Given the high precision of recording that amperometry procedures offer, the volume of data generated can span over several hundreds of megabytes to a few gigabytes and therefore necessitates systematic and reproducible methods for analysis. Though the spike characteristics of amperometry traces in the time domain hold information about the dynamics of exocytosis, these biochemical signals are, more often than not, characterized by time-varying signal properties. Such signals with time-variant properties may occur at different frequencies and therefore analyzing them in the frequency domain may provide statistical validation for observations already established in the time domain. This necessitates the use of time-variant, frequency-selective signal processing methods as well, which can adeptly quantify the dominant or mean frequencies in the signal. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a well-established computational tool that is commonly used to find the frequency components of a signal buried in noise. In this work, we outline a method for spike-based frequency analysis of amperometry traces using FFT that also provides statistical validation of observations on spike characteristics in the time domain. We demonstrate the method by utilizing simulated signals and by subsequently testing it on diverse amperometry datasets generated from different experiments with various chemical stimulations. To our knowledge, this is the first fully automated open-source tool available dedicated to the analysis of spikes extracted from amperometry signals in the frequency domain., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures

Elucidating exocytosis processes provide insights into cellular neurotransmission mechanisms, and may have potential in neurodegenerative diseases research. Amperometry is an established electrochemical method for the detection of neurotransmitters released from and stored inside cells. An important aspect of the amperometry method is the sub-millisecond temporal resolution of the current recordings which leads to several hundreds of gigabytes of high-quality data. In this study, we present a universal method for the classification with respect to diverse amperometric datasets using data-driven approaches in computational science. We demonstrate a very high prediction accuracy (greater than or equal to 95%). This includes an end-to-end systematic machine learning workflow for amperometric time series datasets consisting of pre-processing; feature extraction; model identification; training and testing; followed by feature importance evaluation - all implemented. We tested the method on heterogeneous amperometric time series datasets generated using different experimental approaches, chemical stimulations, electrode types, and varying recording times. We identified a certain overarching set of common features across these datasets which enables accurate predictions. Further, we showed that information relevant for the classification of amperometric traces are neither in the spiky segments alone, nor can it be retrieved from just the temporal structure of spikes. In fact, the transients between spikes and the trace baselines carry essential information for a successful classification, thereby strongly demonstrating that an effective feature representation of amperometric time series requires the full time series. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies that propose a scheme for machine learning, and in particular, supervised learning on full amperometry time series data., Comment: 56 pages, 11 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
This chapter provides a review of the frameworks developed for cosmological perturbation theory in loop quantum cosmology, and applications to various models of the early universe including inflation, ekpyrosis and the matter bounce, with an emphasis on potential observational consequences. It also includes a discussion on extensions to include non-Gaussianities and background anisotropies, as well as on its limitations concerning trans-Planckian perturbations and quantization ambiguities. It concludes with a summary of recent work studying the relation between loop quantum cosmology and full loop quantum gravity., Comment: 47 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Handbook of Quantum Gravity (Eds. Minerals are solid state nuclear track detectors - nuclear recoils in a mineral leave latent damage to the crystal structure. Depending on the mineral and its temperature, the damage features are retained in the material from minutes (in low-melting point materials such as salts at a few hundred degrees C) to timescales much larger than the 4.5 Gyr-age of the Solar System (in refractory materials at room temperature). The damage features from the $O(50)$ MeV fission fragments left by spontaneous fission of $^{238}$U and other heavy unstable isotopes have long been used for fission track dating of geological samples. Laboratory studies have demonstrated the readout of defects caused by nuclear recoils with energies as small as $O(1)$ keV. This whitepaper discusses a wide range of possible applications of minerals as detectors for $E_R \gtrsim O(1)$ keV nuclear recoils: Using natural minerals, one could use the damage features accumulated over $O(10)$ Myr$-O(1)$ Gyr to measure astrophysical neutrino fluxes (from the Sun, supernovae, or cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere) as well as search for Dark Matter. Using signals accumulated over months to few-years timescales in laboratory-manufactured minerals, one could measure reactor neutrinos or use them as Dark Matter detectors, potentially with directional sensitivity. Research groups in Europe, Asia, and America have started developing microscopy techniques to read out the $O(1) - O(100)$ nm damage features in crystals left by $O(0.1) - O(100)$ keV nuclear recoils. We report on the status and plans of these programs. The research program towards the realization of such detectors is highly interdisciplinary, combining geoscience, material science, applied and fundamental physics with techniques from quantum information and Artificial Intelligence., Comment: 115 pages, many pictures of tracks.
