This document presents the activities carried out to date (04/2019) in the project ‘Development of new Lagrangian computational methods for ice-ship interaction problems’ (NICE-SHIP). The NICE-SHIP project aims at developing a new generation of computational methods, based on the integration of innovative Lagrangian particle-based and finite element procedures for the analysis of the operation of a vessel in an iced sea, taking into account the different possible conditions of the ice. It is expected that the computational analysis techniques to be developed in NICE-SHIP will allow ice-class vessel designers to accurately evaluate the loads acting on the structure of a ship navigating in iced-seas and, in particular, to determine the ice resistance of the ship in different ice conditions.

Prediction of multi-hazard slope stability events requires an informed and judicious choice of the possible scenarios. An incorrect definition of landslide conditions in terms of expected failure volume, material behavior, or boundary conditions can lead to inaccurate predictions and, in turn, to wrong engineering and risk management decisions. Reduced-scale experiments carried out two years before the Vajont disaster were carried out with a material not representative of the actual rockslide behavior and failed in not considering the simultaneous failure of the whole landslide body. Based on these inappropriate assumptions, the physical models led to wrong estimates of the safety operational level for the Vajont reservoir. This work uses the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) to analyze the implications of the wrong hypotheses considered in the pre-event experiments, simulating numerically the Vajont disaster for different sliding volumes and material properties. The use of the PFEM for the accurate assessment of the consequences of landslides impinging in water reservoirs has been already validated in a companion paper. In this work, we demonstrate the capabilities of a robust and reliable numerical modeling approach for the simulation of different scenarios, assessing what could have been a safe operational reservoir level in the case of a landslide generated impulse wave. The three-dimensional analyses were run with a high mesh resolution and demonstrate the suitability and robustness of the PFEM model for large-scale landslide and multi-hazard events simulation. We present a Lagrangian nodal integration method for the simulation of Newtonian and non-Newtonian free-surface fluid flows. The proposed nodal Lagrangian method uses a finite element mesh to discretize the computational domain and to define the (linear) shape functions for the unknown nodal variables, as in the standard Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM). In this approach, however, the integrals are performed over nodal patches and not over elements, and strains/stresses are defined at nodes and not at Gauss points. This allows to limit the drawbacks associated with the remeshing and leads to a more accurate stress computation than in the classical elemental PFEM. Several numerical tests, in 2D and in 3D, are presented to validate the proposed nodal PFEM. In all cases, the method has shown a very good agreement with analytical solutions and with experimental and numerical results from the literature. A thorough comparison between nodal and elemental PFEMs is also presented, focusing on crucial issues, such as solution accuracy, convergence, mass conservation and sensitivity to mesh distortion. SUMMARY In this paper, a methodology for computer-aided training of structural problems by the finite element method is presented. The resulting educational program, named ED-Elas2D, has been developed by a group of researchers at the School of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, UPC. The program combines the standard concept which appears in the traditional teaching of finite element methods for structural analysis, such as the introduction to the basic structural theory, data definition (pre-processor), description of the analysis procedure (processor) and interpretation of results (post-processor). The program is addressed to both students who enrol in the study on finite element methods and to academic and technical staff in universities and companies who wish to update their knowledge of finite element techniques. The educational program ED-Elas2D works in the Windows system and it is characterized by its interactivity and graphic utilities.

Cool steam is an innovative distillation technology based on low-temperature thermal distillation (LTTD), which allows obtaining fresh water from non-safe water sources with substantially low energy consumption. LTTD consists of distilling at low temperatures by lowering the working pressure and making the most of low-grade heat sources (either natural or artificial) to evaporate water and then condensate it at a cooler heat sink. To perform the process, an external heat source is needed that provides the latent heat of evaporation and a temperature gradient to maintain the distillation cycle. Depending on the available temperature gradient, several stages can be implemented, leading to a multi-stage device. The cool steam device can thus be single or multi-stage, being raw water fed to every stage from the top and evaporated in contact with the warmer surface within the said stage. Acting as a heat carrier, the water vapor travels to the cooler surface and condensates in contact with it. The latent heat of condensation is then conducted through the conductive wall to the next stage. Net heat flux is then established from the heat source until the heat sink, allowing distilling water inside every parallel stage.

Cuttings transport and hole-cleaning is a challenging issue associated with the efficiency of wellbore hydraulics and drilling operation. Traditional methods used to understand hole cleaning problems are based on field observations and extensive flow loop testing to formulate empirical correlations and mechanistic models. The focus of this study is to create digital twin utilizing advanced simulation techniques that provides better insight for cuttings transport and hole-cleaning. This study explores the use of Eulerian-Lagrangian based numerical techniques to estimate critical flow rate needed for efficient hole cleaning. Digital twin for the cuttings transport is formulated utilizing three dimensional Navier stokes equations employing combination of Eulerian and lagrangian approaches to model the drilling mud flow and cuttings interaction with the drilling mud, wellbore walls and between cuttings themselves. One of the important model to estimate the drag force on cuttings is modified for non-spherical cuttings shape coupled with non-newtonian Herschel Bulkley behavior of the drilling mud in this work. The influence of important parameters, such as fluid rheology, rotation of drill-string, and inclination of wellbore on the hole-cleaning process is investigated. Digital solutions are compared against the published data for Newtonian and non-Newtonian drilling fluids under different wellbore configurations. The advanced computational simulation involving novel drag force correlation and unique combination of numerical methods allowed to create digital twin for cuttings transport process accurately. The numerical strategy utilizing modified drag law showed a very good match with experimental results for straight vertical wellbore, the cuttings transport velocity estimated by digital solutions was within 5% difference of experimental results. Further upon validation, numerical results are successfully computed for drill -string rotation effects which clearly showed physics of cuttings transported efficiently with added energy due to rotation. The phenomenon of cuttings bed sliding in inclined and horizontal wellbores is also correctly simulated with the proposed drag law and numerical methods. The proposed methodology works without any issues with high concentration of cuttings and provides detailed insight into cuttings flow path and effect of various operational parameters on hole cleaning. Advanced computational simulations and modification of drag force law assisted in formulating digital twin that provided excellent insights in understanding effects of operational parameters for efficient hole cleaning.

Within this paper we discuss a numerical strategy to solve the elasticity problem upon unstructured and non conforming meshes, allowing all kinds of flat-faced elements (polygons in 2D and polyhedra in 3D). The core of the formulation relies on two numerical procedures 1) the Control Volume Function Approximation (CVFA), and 2) the polynomial interpolation in the neighborhood of the control volumes, which is used to solve the surface integrals resulting from applying the divergence theorem. By comparing the estimated stress against the analytical stress field of the well known test of an infinite plate with a hole, we show that this conservative approach is robust and accurate. This paper extends to three dimensions (3D), the computational technique developed by the authors in 2D for predicting the onset and evolution of fracture in a finite element mesh in a simple manner based on combining the finite element method and the discrete element method (DEM) approach (Zárate and Oñate in Comput Part Mech 2(3):301–314, 2015). Once a crack is detected at an element edge, discrete elements are generated at the adjacent element vertexes and a simple DEM mechanism is considered in order to follow the evolution of the crack. The combination of the DEM with simple four-noded linear tetrahedron elements correctly captures the onset of fracture and its evolution, as shown in several 3D examples of application.

A methodology that comprises several characterization properties for particle packings is proposed in this paper. The methodology takes into account factors such as dimension and shape of particles, space occupation, homogeneity, connectivity and isotropy, among others. This classification and integration of several properties allows to carry out a characterization process to systemically evaluate the particle packings in order to guarantee the quality of the initial meshes in discrete element simulations, in both the micro- and the macroscales. Several new properties were created, and improvements in existing ones are presented. Properties from other disciplines were adapted to be used in the evaluation of particle systems. The methodology allows to easily characterize media at the level of the microscale (continuous geometries—steels, rocks microstructures, etc., and discrete geometries) and the macroscale. A global, systemic and integral system for characterizing and evaluating particle sets, based on fuzzy logic, is presented. Such system allows researchers to have a unique evaluation criterion based on the aim of their research. Examples of applications are shown.

We present an overview of the Pseudo-Direct Numerical Simulation (P-DNS in short) method for the solution of multi-scale phenomena. The method can be seen as an adaptation of the variational multi-scale (VMS) method, where the fine solution is solved numerically instead of analytically. Also, from the point of view of homogenization methods it can be seen as an evolution of Finite Element square (FE 2 ) methods, where the most expensive part of the computations is performed offline. The name of P-DNS arises from the premise that in all multi-scale simulations the numerical result obtained with a very fine discretization is correct without the need to introduce any additional model (i.e. turbulence models) or stabilization procedures for transport equation terms (as in residual-based VMS methods). What is intended here is that the P-DNS solution tends to the DNS solution of the problem, accepting as a premise that the DNS solution is a reliable result. In this paper we present first an overview of the P-DNS methodology in the context of an abstract Dirichlet problem involving a second order differential operator that could be non-symmetric and non-necessarily positive definite. Next, the P-DNS approach is applied to the fluid mechanics equations accounting for turbulent phenomena. Examples showing the applicability of the P-DNS method for solving transport problems involving different scales are then presented.

Many polymer-made objects show a trend of melting and dripping in fire, a behavior that may be modified by adding flame retardants (FRs). These affect materials properties, e.g., heat absorption and viscosity. In this paper, the effect of a flame retardant on the fire behavior of polymers in the UL 94 scenario is studied. This goal is achieved essentially by applying a new computational strategy that combines the particle finite element method for the polymer with an Eulerian formulation for air. The sample selected is a polypropylene (PP) with magnesium hydroxide at 30 wt.%. For modelling, values of density, conductivity, specific heat, viscosity, and Arrhenius coefficients are obtained from different literature sources, and experimental characterization is performed. However, to alleviate the missing viscosity at a high temperature, three viscosity curves are introduced on the basis of the viscosity curve provided by NIST and the images of the test. In the experiment, we burn the specimen under the UL 94 condition, recording the process and measuring the temperature evolution by means of three thermocouples. The UL 94 test is solved, validating the methodology and quantifying the effect of FR on the dripping behavior. The numerical results prove that well-adjusted viscosity is crucial to achieving good agreement between the experimental and numerical results in terms of the shape of the polymer and the temperature evolution inside the polymer.

Cliff recession poses a significant threat to the built environment, transportation infrastructure and land use. In this paper, a novel computational framework called the Nodal-integration based Particle Finite Element Method (N-PFEM) is developed for modelling the cliff recession resulting from weathering-induced landslides. The N-PFEM combines the nodal-integration technique with the PFEM in second-order cone programming and thus requires no variable mapping operation, which is essential in the classical PFEM for modelling history-dependent materials, for modelling large deformation problems such as landslides in cliff recession processes. To verify the developed N-PFEM, a series of benchmarks have been simulated including the cliff recession under both the weathering-limited and transport-limited conditions. Simulation results from the N-PFEM are validated in detail to these from the limit analysis method, well established geomorphologic models and the discrete element method. Additionally, measures for preventing cliff recession such as the construction of retaining wall structures are also investigated using the N-PFEM.

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been used for modelling continua, like concrete or rocks. However, it requires a big calibration effort, even to capture just the linear elastic behavior of a continuum modelled via the classical force-displacement relationships at the contact interfaces between particles. In this work we propose a new way for computing the contact forces between discrete particles. The newly proposed forces take into account the surroundings of the contact, not just the contact itself. This brings in the missing terms that provide an accurate approximation to an elastic continuum, and avoids calibration of the DEM parameters for the purely linear elastic range.

The influence of the microstructural heterogeneities is an important topic in the study of materials. In the context of computational mechanics, it is therefore necessary to generate virtual materials that are statistically equivalent to the microstructure under study, and to connect that geometrical description to the different numerical methods. Herein, the authors present a procedure to model continuous solid polycrystalline materials, such as rocks and metals, preserving their representative statistical grain size distribution. The first phase of the procedure consists of segmenting an image of the material into adjacent polyhedral grains representing the individual crystals. This segmentation allows estimating the grain size distribution, which is used as the input for an advancing front sphere packing algorithm. Finally, Laguerre diagrams are calculated from the obtained sphere packings. The centers of the spheres give the centers of the Laguerre cells, and their radii determine the cells’ weights. The cell sizes in the obtained Laguerre diagrams have a distribution similar to that of the grains obtained from the image segmentation. That is why those diagrams are a convenient model of the original crystalline structure. The above-outlined procedure has been used to model real polycrystalline metallic materials. The main difference with previously existing methods lies in the use of a better particle packing algorithm.

An a-posteriori error estimate with application to inviscid compressible flow problems is presented. The estimate is a surrogate measure of the discretization error, obtained from an approximation to the truncation terms of the governing equations. This approximation is calculated from the discrete nodal differential residuals using a reconstructed solution field on a modified stencil of points. Both the error estimation methodology and the flow solution scheme are implemented using the Finite Point Method, a meshless technique enabling higher-order approximations and reconstruction procedures on general unstructured discretizations. The performance of the proposed error indicator is studied and applications to adaptive grid refinement are presented.

In this work a kinematics for laminated beams enriched with a refined formulation ZigZag (RZT), originally presented by Tessler et al. in 2007, introduced in a hierarchical one dimensional type “p” finite element is presented. The finite element employs Lagrange polynomials for the approximation of the degrees of freedom of the ends (nodes) and orthogonal Gram-Schmidt polynomials to the internal degrees of freedoms. This finite element allows a very low discretization, is free of shear locking and behaves very well when the analysis of laminated composites with accurate determination of local stresses and strains at laminar level is necessary. This element has been validated in the analysis of laminated beams with various sequences of symmetric and asymmetric stacking, studying in each case its accuracy and stability. Fil: Nallim, Liz. The main objective of this work lies in the development of a variational implicit Material Point Method (MPM), implemented in the open source Kratos Multiphysics framework. The ability of the MPM technique to solve large displacement and large deformation problems is widely recognised and its use ranges over many problems in industrial and civil engineering. In the current work the continuum based implicit MPM is applied to engineering applications, where granular material flow is involved. For the resolution of the length and time scale of these particular problems, both continuum and discrete models are typically used. Even if discrete techniques predict more feasible results, nowadays, their use is limited to the investigation of element tests of particles, or to the simulation of reduced systems, not allowing to make important decisions in the analysis and design of granular processes. Some advantages of MPM over discrete methods are tested, such as, the ability to simulate granular flow at the large scale with acceptable computational cost and the capability to get information of stress and strain state in a more straightforward way. The focus of this paper is a comparative study between an irreducible and a mixed formulation, both implemented in the MPM code, to assess the improvement in accuracy and reliability of the numerical results when the latter formulation is adopted.

URL http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021999114008420 ], the authors have presented a highly efficient extension of the Particle Finite Element Method, called PFEM-2, to solve two-phase flows. The methodology which uses X-IVS [S. Idelsohn, N. Nigro, A. Limache, E. Oñate, Large time-step explicit integration method for solving problems with dominant convection, Comp Methods in Appl Mech Eng 217–220 (2012) 168–185.] to treat convection terms allowing large time-steps was validated for problems where the gravity forces and/or the inertial forces dominate the flow. Although that is the target range of problems to solve with PFEM-2, most of real problems that fall in these categories also includes other flow regimes in certain regions of the domain. Maybe the most common secondary regime is when the surface tension dominates, as an example when drops or bubbles are released from the main flow, and this feature must be taken into account in any complete numerical strategy. Attending to that, in this work the treatment of the surface tension to PFEM-2 is included. An implicit CSF methodology is employed together with a coupling between the marker function with a Level Set function to obtain a smooth representation of the normal of the interface which allows an accurate curvature calculation. Examples for curvature calculation and isolated bubbles and drops are presented where the accuracy and the computational efficiency are analyzed and contrasted with other numerical methodologies. Finally, a simulation of a jet atomization is analyzed. This case presents the above mentioned features: it is a inertia-dominant flow with a surface tension phenomena on drops and ligaments break up that can not be neglected. Fil: Gimenez, Juan Marcelo. A generic formulation of a new method for packing particles is presented. It is based on a constructive advancing front method, and uses Monte Carlo techniques for the generation of particle dimensions. The method can be used to obtain virtual dense packings of particles with several geometrical shapes. It employs continuous, discrete, and empirical statistical distributions in order to generate the dimensions of particles. The packing algorithm is very flexible and allows alternatives for: 1—the direction of the advancing front (inwards or outwards), 2—the selection of the local advancing front, 3—the method for placing a mobile particle in contact with others, and 4—the overlap checks. The algorithm also allows obtaining highly porous media when it is slightly modified. The use of the algorithm to generate real particle packings from grain size distribution curves, in order to carry out engineering applications, is illustrated. Finally, basic applications of the algorithm, which prove its effectiveness in the generation of a large number of particles, are carried out.

Changes in direction and cross section in supercritical hydraulic channels generate shockwaves which result in an increase in flow depth with regard to that for uniform regime. These disturbances are propagated downstream and need to be considered in the design of the chute walls. In dam spillways, where flow rates are often high, this phenomenon can have significant implications for the cost and complexity of the solution. It has been traditionally analysed by means of reduced-scale experimental tests, as it has a clear three-dimensional character and therefore cannot be approached with two-dimensional numerical models. In this work, the ability of the particle finite element method (PFEM) to reproduce this phenomenon is analysed. PFEM has been successfully applied in previous works to problems involving high irregularities in free surface. First, simple test cases available in the technical bibliography were selected to be reproduced with PFEM. Subsequently, the method was applied in two spillways of real dams. The results show that PFEM is capable of capturing the shockwave fronts generated both in the contractions and in the expansions that occur behind the spillway piers. This suggests that the method may be useful as a complement to laboratory test campaigns for the design and hydraulic analysis of dam spillways with complex geometries.

This research investigates the synthesis of new formulations of intumescent coating with improved thermal performance for steel structures. The coating formulations were based on the expandable graphite reinforced with wollastonite and bentonite. Ten samples of five formulations were synthesized by varying grinding time duration between 1 and 2 min. To analyse the substrate temperature of coated steel, fire test was performed according to ASTM-E119. The char morphology was observed by Field Emission Scanning Electron (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). FTIR and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) test is conducted to analyse the composition of the residual char. The residual char mass was perceived by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the coating. X-ray Photo Electron Spectroscopy (XPS) was utilized for binding energy and elemental composition of the char. One-hour fire protection test showed 166 °C, the lowest substrate temperature of IFRC5-2 and 40.46% residual mass was obtained by TGA analysis. XRD analysis showed that residual char has aluminum borate and borophosphate and confirmed by functional group analysis using and FTIR. FESEM and TEM illustrated that char relates to hexagonal particles of wollastonite. XPS analysis of IFRC5-2 showed the carbon and oxygen contents were 41.40% and 51.20%. Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (Pyrolysis GC–MS) results showed IFRC-5 produced less concentration of the gaseous products compared to IFRC-C. The formulations developed by grinding solid ingredients for 2 min showed improved thermal performance compared with the formulation produced by grinding solid ingredients for 1 min. Longer grinding time and higher amount of filler improved the thermal properties of the intumescent coating.

This paper shows a generalization of the classic isotropic plasticity theory to be applied to orthotropic or anisotropic materials. This approach assumes the existence of a real anisotropic space, and other fictitious isotropic space where a mapped fictitious problem is solved. Both spaces are related by means of a linear transformation using a fourth order transformation tensor that contains all the information concerning the real anisotropic material. The paper describes the basis of the spaces transformation proposed and the expressions of the resulting secant and tangent constitutive equations. Also details of the numerical integration of the constitutive equation are provided. Examples of application showing the good performance of the model for analysis of orthotropic materials and fibre‐reinforced composites are given.

A Petrov–Galerkin formulation based on two different perturbations to the weighting functions is presented. These perturbations stabilize the oscillations that are normally exhibited by the numerical solution of the transient advective–diffusive equation in the vicinity of sharp gradients produced by transient loads and boundary layers. The formulation may be written as a generalization of the Galerkin Least‐Square method.

We present a general formulation for modeling bed erosion in free surface flows using the particle finite element method (PFEM). The key feature of the PFEM is the use of an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in domains containing fluid and solid subdomains. Nodes are viewed as material points (called particles) which can freely move and even separate from the fluid and solid subdomains representing, for instance, the effect of water drops or soil/rock particles. A mesh connects the nodes defining the discretized domain in the fluid and solid regions where the governing equations, expressed in an integral form, are solved as in the standard FEM. The necessary stabilization for dealing with the incompressibility of the fluid is introduced via the finite calculus (FIC) method. An incremental iterative scheme for the solution of the nonlinear transient coupled fluid-structure problem is described. The erosion mechanism is modeled by releasing the material adjacent to the bed surface according to the frictional work generated by the fluid shear stresses. The released bed material is subsequently transported by the fluid flow. Examples of application of the PFEM to solve a number of bed erosion problems involving large motions of the free surface and splashing of waves are presented.

This work presents a wing deformation analysis of a twin-sting-mounted commercial aircraft model. Twin-sting arrangements minimize flow disturbances around the model fuselage and tail; on the other hand, they cause important changes in the flow field around the wing and also increase aerodynamic interference at the wing and aeroelastic effects on the wing. In some cases, these effects can alter the normal downwash developed behind the wing, modifying the flow pattern at the tail. Consequently, when tail aerodynamics is a major concern, this kind of support interference should be carefully evaluated. The methodology developed in this work employs an unstructured FEM-based flow solver for computing aerodynamic loads. These loads are then transferred to a finite element structural model in order to assess the geometrical deformation of the wing caused by torsional moment exerted by supporting mechanism. The analysis described involves three different twin-sting support configurations taking into account angle of attack variations and Mach numbers spanning from subsonic of high transonic ranges.

In this original approach, a dense package of circles (or spheres) with the same distribution as the grains is generated to produce a set of Voronoi cells that are later modified to Laguerre cells representing the original structure. This algorithm was successfully applied to materials with somewhat equidimensional grains; however, it fails for long-shaped grains. In this paper, modifications are provided in order to overcome these drawbacks. This is accomplished by moving each vertex of the Voronoi cells in such a way that the vertex should be equidistant from the particles with respect to the Euclidean distance. The algorithm is applied to packages of ellipses and spherocylinders in 2D. An example for a package of spheres is also provided to illustrate the application for a simple 3D case. The adherence between the generated packages and the corresponding tessellations is verified by means of the Jaccard coefficient (J). Several packages are generated randomly and the distribution of J coefficients is investigated. The obtained values satisfy the theoretical restraints and the quality of the proposed algorithm is statistically validated.

Consequences of submarine landslides include both their direct impact on offshore infrastructure, such as subsea electric cables and gas/oil pipelines, and their indirect impact via the generated tsunami. The simulation of submarine landslides and their consequences has been a long-standing challenge majorly due to the strong coupling among sliding sediments, seawater and infrastructure as well as the induced extreme material deformation during the complete process. In this paper, we propose a unified finite element formulation for solid and fluid dynamics based on a generalised Hellinger–Reissner variational principle so that the coupling of fluid and solid can be achieved naturally in a monolithic fashion. In order to tackle extreme deformation problems, the resulting formulation is implemented within the framework of the particle finite element method. The correctness and robustness of the proposed unified formulation for single-phase problems (e.g. fluid dynamics problems involving Newtonian/Non-Newtonian flows and solid dynamics problems) as well as for multi-phase problems (e.g. two-phase flows) are verified against benchmarks. Comparisons are carried out against numerical and analytical solutions or experimental data that are available in the literature. Last but not least, the possibility of the proposed approach for modelling submarine landslides and their consequences is demonstrated via a numerical experiment of an underwater slope stability problem. It is shown that the failure and post-failure processes of the underwater slope can be predicted in a single simulation with its direct threat to a nearby pipeline and indirect threat by generating tsunami being estimated as well. A family of rotation-free three node triangular shell elements is presented. The simplest element of the family is based on an assumed constant curvature field expressed in terms of the nodal deflections of a patch of four elements and a constant membrane field computed from the standard linear interpolation of the displacements within each triangle. An enhanced version of the element is obtained by using a quadratic interpolation of the geometry in terms of the six patch nodes. This allows to compute an assumed linear membrane strain field which improves the in-plane behaviour of the original element. A simple and economic version of the element using a single integration point is presented. The efficiency of the different rotation-free shell triangles is demonstrated in many examples of application including linear and non-linear analysis of shells under static and dynamic loads, the inflation and de-inflation of membranes and a sheet stamping problem.

The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors’ own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.

The paper presents a systematically numerical procedure based on the finite-element method for three-dimensional analysis of segmentally constructed prestressed concrete bridges using hexahedral elements including realistic tendon profiles. The enhanced assumed strain (EAS) is used in the formulation of the hexahedral element in order to improve the element performances. Both the geometric nonlinearity and time-dependent effects due to creep, shrinkage, and aging of the concrete and relaxation of the prestress are taken into account, while variations of the structural configuration due to changes of the structural geometry and boundary conditions during the construction process are also incorporated. To include realistic tendon profiles, the idealized prestressing tendon is represented by a system of piecewise linear prestressing segments. Several numerical examples in a wide range of prestressed concrete structures are presented to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed procedure. Finally, application to the erection of a segmentally erected prestressed concrete bridge is discussed at the end of the paper.

The solid-shells are an attractive kind of element for the simulation of f orming processes, due to the fact that any kind of generic 3D constitutive law can be employed without any kind of additional modification, besides the thermomechanic problem is formulated without additional assumptions. Additionally, this type of element allows the three-dimensional description of the deformable body, thus contact on both sides of the element can be treated easily. The present work consists in the development of a triangular prism element as a solid-shell, for the analysis of thin/thick shell, undergoing large deformations. The element is formulated in total Lagrangian formulation, and employs the neighbour (adjacent) elements to perform a local patch to enrich the displacement field. In the original formulation by Flores, a modified right Cauchy-Green deformation tensor ((Formula presented.)) is obtained; in the present work a modified deformation gradient ((Formula presented.)) is obtained, which allows to generalise the methodology and allows to employ a wide range of constitutive laws. The element is based in three modifications: (a) a classical assumed strain approach for transverse shear strains (b) an assumed strain approach for the in-plane components using information from neighbour elements and (c) an averaging of the volumetric strain over the element. The objective is to use this type of elements for the simulation of shells avoiding transverse shear locking, improving the membrane behaviour of the in-plane triangle and to handle quasi-incompressible materials or materials with isochoric plastic flow. A new mixed displacement-pressure element for solving solid–pore fluid interaction problems is presented. In the resulting coupled system of equations, the balance of momentum equation remains unaltered, while the mass balance equation for the pore fluid is stabilized with the inclusion of higher-order terms multiplied by arbitrary dimensions in space, following the finite calculus (FIC) procedure. The stabilized FIC-FEM formulation can be applied to any kind of interpolation for the displacements and the pressure, but in this work, we have used linear elements of equal order interpolation for both set of unknowns. Examples in 2D and 3D are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the stabilized formulation for solid–pore fluid interaction problems.

The DiscreteElement Method(DEM) was found to be an effectivenumerical methodfor the calculation of engineering problems involvinggranular materials. However, the representation of irregular particles using the DEM is a very challenging issue, leading to different geometrical approaches. This document presents a new insight in the application of one of those simplifications known as rolling friction,which avoids excessive rotation when irregular shaped materials are simulated as spheric particles. This new approach, called the Bounded Rolling Friction model, was applied to reproduce a ballastresistance test.

Design of two-dimensional supersonic diffusers as a part of thewind tunnelis investigated in this paper. A methodology based on the mixture of try-and-error method and optimization algorithm is developed to handle thedesign problem. In the first design step, using try-and-error approach, the main parameters related to the geometry of diffuser such as length, angle andarea ratiobetween the throat and the outlet are determined assuming a diffuser with linear walls. Thedesign criterionin this step is the fact that the shock wave should be created near the diffuser throat in order to benefit from the maximum efficiency of diffuser. In the second design step, considering the optimization methodology, it is tried to improve theoptimum designobtained in the first step by modifying the wall point locations and keeping the rest of the geometry fixed. Hence, an optimization problemis defined to find the best curve for the diffuser wall instead of the a linear one used the in the first step. Theobjective functionof this problem is to minimize the output Mach number usingGenetic Algorithm(GA). Thefluid flowis evaluated using theEuler equationsin the conservative form where the Streamline-Upwind/Petrov–Galerkin (SUPG) finite element scheme is used to discretize theflow equations. In order to capture the flow solution around the shock waves accurately, theadaptive mesh refinementtechnique is coupled to the flow solution. The demonstrated results show the efficiency of the proposed method for designing supersonic diffusers

The objective of this work is to describe the design and implementation of a framework for building multi-disciplinary finite element programs. The main goals are generality, reusability, extendibility, good performance and memory efficiency. Another objective is preparing the code structure for team development to ensure the easy collaboration of experts in different fields in the development of multi-disciplinary applications. Kratos, the framework described in this work, contains several tools for the easy implementation of finite element applications and also provides a common platform for the natural interaction of different applications. To achieve this, an innovative variable base interface is designed and implemented. This interface is used at different levels of abstraction and showed to be very clear and extendible. Avery efficient and flexible data structure and an extensible IO are created to overcome difficulties in dealing with multi-disciplinary problems. Several other concepts in existing works are also collected and adapted to coupled problems. The use of an interpreter, of different data layouts and variable number of dofs per node are examples of such approach. In order to minimize the possible conflicts arising in the development, a kernel and application approach is used. The code is structured in layers to reflect the working space of developers with different fields of expertise. Details are given on the approach chosen to increase performance and efficiency. Examples of application of Kratos to different multidisciplinary problems are presented in order to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the new object oriented environment.

Thenumerical simulationof complexfailure modesofcomposite materials, such asdelamination, can be computationally very demanding, as it requires special elements and/or numerical strategies to characterizedamage onset and propagation. This work presents several formulations developed to optimize the computational performance of an explicit finite element code designed specifically for the simulation of large scale composite structures. The composite mechanical performance is obtained with the matrix-reinforced mixing theory, a simplified version of the serial/parallel mixing theory that does not require aniterative procedureor the calculation of the tangentstiffness matrix. The number of elements required to perform the simulation is reduced by stacking several layers inside a single finite element. This work also proposes a modification of theisotropic damagelaw, capable of taking into account theresidual strengthprovided by friction in type II fracture modes. The ability of these formulations to successfully predict the mechanical performance of composite materials is assessed with the ply drop-off test. In this test a laminate with a change of thickness in its mid-span is loaded until it breaks due to a delamination process. The formulation proposed obtains a very accurate prediction of theexperimental responseof the test, as it provides a very goodcharacterizationof the initiallaminate stiffness, the delamination onset, and its propagation along the specimen.&nbsp

The paper investigates a robust optimisation for detail design of active shock control bump on a transonic Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) aerofoil using a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) coupled to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFDs) software. For MOEA, Robust Multi-Objective Optimisation Platform (RMOP) developed at CIMNE is used. For the active shock control bump design, two different optimisation methods are considered; the first method is a Pareto-Game based Genetic Algorithm in RMOP (denoted as RMOGA). The second method uses a Hybridised RMOGA with Game-Strategies and a parallel computation for high performance computation. Numerical results show not only how the concept of Shock Control Bump (SCB) coupled to CFD can improve aerodynamic performance of classic transonic aerofoil at the variability of flight conditions but also how high performance (parallel/distributed) computation with applying Hybrid-Game increases the efficiency of optimisation in terms of computational cost and results accuracy.

We present a simulation tool for transient events in complex hydraulic networks. The code includes modelling of the transport of suspended cuttings in near-vertical wells. An unstructured finite volume formulation with implicit time integration has been chosen. The unconditional stability of the integrator makes the method suitable for the simulation of transient events over a wide range of characteristic timescales. It handles both very fast transients (e.g. fluid hammer events) and the long-term evolution of the well (e.g. hole cleaning operations). The software has been developed to address the need of the oil industry for a robust and efficient predictive tool allowing effective well control in managed pressure drilling operations. The physical modelling follows the standard practices accepted by the industry (e.g. mud rheology computations). The mathematical foundation of the algorithm is described followed by validation cases that illustrate its capabilities and accuracy. Finally, a practical industrial application example is provided to demonstrate the real-world performance of the software.

The tendency of the polymers to melt and drip when they are exposed to external heat source play a very important role in the ignition and the spread of fire. Numerical simulation is a promising methodology for predicting this behaviour. In this paper, a computational procedure that aims at analyzing the combustion, melting and flame spread of polymer is presented. The method models the polymer using a Lagrangian framework adopting the particle finite element method framework while the surrounding air is solved on a fixed Eulerian mesh. This approach allows to treat naturally the polymer shape deformations and to solve the thermo-mechanical problem in a staggered fashion. The problems are coupled using an embedded Dirichlet–Neumann scheme. A simple combustion model and a radiation modeling strategy are included in the air domain. With this strategy the burning of a polypropylene specimen under UL-94 vertical test conditions is simulated. Input parameters for the modelling (density, specific heat, conductivity and viscosity) and results for the validation of the numerical model has been obtained from different literature sources and by IMDEA burning a specimen of dimensions of $$148 \times 13 \times 3.2\,{\mathrm {mm}}^3$$ . Temperature measurements in the polymer have been recorder by means of three thermocouples exceeding the 1000 K. Simultaneously a digital camera was used to record the burning process. In addition, thermal decomposition of the material (Arrhenius coefficient $${\mathrm {A}}=7.14 \times 10^{16}\,{\mathrm {min}}^{-1}$$ and activation energy $${\mathrm {E}}=240.67\,{\mathrm {kJ/mol}}$$ ) as and changes in viscosity ( $$\mu $$ ) as a function of temperature were obtained. Finally, a good agreement between the experimental and the numerical can be seen in terms of shape of the polymer as well as in the temperature evolution inside the polymer.

This paper describes a computation methodology to evaluate the ultimate strength and fracture of concrete samples and structures and its application to four typical tests of experimental laboratories of strength of materials. The tests results are compared and analysed from the experimental and numerical points of view in order to highlight the need for experimental trials to use the information derived from numerical results and, in turn, to validate that numerical models follow the behaviour and physics that occur in laboratory tests This comparison allows to explain the different mechanisms that occur throughout the experiments.

The scatter in the fatigue life of the metallic structures seems to be mainly caused by internal defects of the material (porosity, inclusions as oxide films and carbon layers, grain boundaries, etc.). As discontinuities in geometry, defects cause stress concentration and are therefore prone to fatigue crack initiation. Here, a fatigue model based in continuum mechanic with its general expressions for the elasto-plastic-damage constitutive equations, previously developed by the authors, is extended to include the effects of material internal defects. In this stress life approach the material is considered to be non-homogenous. The material strength is randomly assigned and Stress-Nº of cycles curves are scaled down according to material strength of each point. Limit values for material strength are based on experimental tests of samples with different degree of porosity. &nbsp

In this paper we consider several aspects related to the application of the pseudo‐concentration techniques to the simulation of mould filling processes. We discuss, in particular, the smoothing of the front when finite elements with interior nodes are employed and the evacuation of air through the introduction of temporary free wall nodes. The basic numerical techniques to solve the incompressible Navier—Stokes equations are also briefly described. The main features of the numerical model are the use of div‐stable velocity—pressure interpolations with discontinuous pressures, the elimination of the pressure via an iterative penalty formulation, the use of the SUPG approach to deal with convection‐dominated problems and the temporal integration using the generalized trapezoidal rule. At the end of the paper we present some numerical results obtained for a two‐dimensional test problem showing the ability of the method to capture complicated flow patterns.

This paper describes the objectives and current status of the research project NUMISTAMP currently under development at the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering of (CIMNE) located in Barcelona, Spain. The aim of this project is theassesmentof different finite element models for simulation of sheet stamping processes. The models currently analyzed include: quasistatic viscoplastic flow and elastoplastic solid models and explicit dynamic models. Both shell and continuum elements are considered in most of these cases. The paper presents an overview of the basic features of the different models. Examples of application including some benchmark test cases proposed at NUMISHEET are also presented.

The paper is aimed to present industrial applications of sheet stamping simulation using new finite element formulations developed in the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering in Barcelona. Theoretical formulation is briefly reviewed. Both continuum and shell elements have been considered. The new shell elements developed are based on a geometrically exact shell model treating the shell as one-director Cosserat surface. The formulation of the continuum elements employs the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient tensor into its elastic and plastic parts. The new finite element models have been implemented in the in-house explicit dynamic code STAMPACK. A number of practical problems of sheet metalforming have been solved with the program. Some of the problems, namely stamping of a kitchen sink, hydraulic forming of an aeronautical part and stamping of a food can, have been presented in the paper. The examples give an idea of practical information that can be obtained from the computer simulation of a forming process. The results confirm a good behaviour of the formulation and program used in the industrial applications.

This paper presents some advances of finite element explicit formulation for simulation of metal forming processes. Because of their computational efficiency, finite element programs based on the explicit dynamic formulation proved to be a very attractive tool for the simulation of metal forming processes. The use of explicit programs in the sheet forming simulation is quite common, the possibilities of these codes in bulk forming simulation in our opinion are still not exploited sufficiently. In our paper, we will consider aspects of bulk forming simulation. We will present new formulations and algorithms developed for bulk metal forming within the explicit formulation. An extension of a finite element code for the thermomechanical coupled analysis is discussed. A new thermomechanical constitutive model developed by the authors and implemented in the program is presented. A new formulation based on the so-called split algorithm allows us to use linear triangular and tetrahedral elements in the analysis of large plastic deformations characteristic to forming processes. Linear triangles and tetrahedra have many advantages over quadrilateral and hexahedral elements. Linear triangles and tetrahedra based on the standard formulations exhibit volumetric locking and are not suitable for large plastic strain simulation. The new formulation allows to overcome this difficulty. New formulations and algorithms have been implemented in the finite element code Stampack developed at the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering in Barcelona. Numerical examples illustrate some of the possibilities of the finite element code developed and validate new algorithms.

An algorithm to construct boundary-conforming, isotropic clouds of points with variable density in space is described. The input required consists of a specified mean point distance and an initial triangulation of the surface. Borrowing a key concept from advancing front grid generators, one point at a time is removed and, if possible, surrounded by admissible new points. This operation is repeated until no active points are left. Timings show that the scheme is about an order of magnitude faster than volume grid generators based on the advancing front technique, making it possible to generate large (>106) yet optimal clouds of points in a matter of minutes on a workstation. Several examples are included that demonstrate the capabilities of the technique. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Delaunay triangulation is a geometric problem that is relatively difficult to parallelize. Parallel algorithms are usually characterized by considerable interprocessor communication or important serialized parts. In this paper, we propose a method that achieves high speed-ups, but needs information regarding locally maximum element circumspheres prior to the beginning of the algorithm. Such information is directly available in iterative methods, like the particle finite element methods. The developed parallel Delaunay triangulation method, has minimum communication requirements, is quite simple and achieves high parallel efficiency. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A general constitutive model adequate for analysis of the thermomechanical response of composite materials is presented. The model is based on the mixture of the basic substances of the composite and allows the evaluation of the interdependence between the constitutive behaviour of different compounding materials. The behaviour of the each compound is modelled by a general anisotropic thermo‐elasto‐plastic model, termed the ‘base model’. The different base models for each compound are combined using mixing theory to simulate the behaviour of the multiphase material.
