56. Ultrasound-Powered Wireless Underwater Acoustic Identification Tags for Backscatter Communication

Abstract

Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operations are limited by currently achievable underwater localization and navigation solutions; hence, the development of low-cost and passive (i.e., operable without an active power supply) acoustic underwater markers (or tags) can provide accurate localization information to AUVs improving their situational awareness, especially when operating in small scales or confined missions. This work presents an acoustic identification (AID) tag that can be powered wirelessly with ultrasonic power transfer from a remote acoustic source (e.g., mounted on an interrogating AUV) and provide localization information using backscatter communication. The AID tag harvests energy from the acoustic signal generated from the AUV and communicates by modulating the reflected signals from an embedded piezoelectric transducer. A scaled broadband AID tag prototype that achieves concurrent acoustic energy harvesting (tuned around 1.3 MHz) and backscatter communication (in wider frequency band 600 and 800 kHz) using frequency-domain multiplexing is implemented using a custom broadband impedance matching-based transducer design approach. During concurrent power and data operation, this prototype AID tag achieves data rates up to 200 kb/s using amplitude- and frequency-based modulation communication. The use of broadband schemes to achieve robust communications in low SNR (tested here down to −6 dB) is also demonstrated using linear frequency-modulated data carriers. Finally, the extension to full-scale devices of this AID tag concept and potential applications for short-range AUV routing and navigation such as homing and docking are discussed.

Abstract

Companies constantly adapt to new business environments in order to be successful and stay relevant. Innovation is a vital source for a company to be competitive in the business environment. Innovations enable companies to develop and utilize new strategies, tools, and tactics as well as new products and services. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are comprehensive software packages that aim to integrate business processes and functions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of ERP systems on the innovative capabilities of the organization, using quantitative research methods with an exploratory research design. The design of the study involved determining the influential factors to innovation in terms of ERP systems and analyzing the secondary data of two surveys on innovation and information technologies relationship. The data were collected as a part of a longitudinal, multinational research effort in manufacturing and retail, transportation, and logistics sectors. The research suggests a theoretical framework on ERP innovation relationship and presents empirical findings. 88. Tunable elastic metamaterials using rotatable coupled dual-beam resonators.

Abstract

We present the theoretical background, finite element and spectral element analyses, and experimental validation of a new class of tunable elastic metamaterials which leverage coupled dual-beam resonators that cancel in-phase bending vibration of each beam section. For a metamaterial with an array of rotatable single-beam resonators, we first show that the orthogonal bending modes of each resonator merely cause the shrinkage of one bandgap and the expansion of the other with changing resonator angle. Then, by simply rotating the coupled dual beams while keeping the joint tip mass stationary, we demonstrate that the bandgap of the host elastic metamaterial with an array of coupled dual-beam resonators can be continuously tuned over a wide range of frequencies. While canceling the undesired lateral bending motions, we enable tunable elastic metamaterials through altering the moment of inertia of the beam-type resonator attachments. Continuous bandgap tuning over a broad frequency range is validated experimentally, yielding a 42% change in the starting frequency of the bandgap as the coupled dual-beam resonators are rotated from 0 ° to 90 °. Although passive tuning is considered in our work, active components can be incorporated in the proposed design to enable adaptive tuning as well as time-varying behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
