Abstract

Plastic companies are developing advancements in the integrated fuel systems, spurred by the competition to meet US government emission standards. A variety of fuel-management components is using nylon, flouropolymers and acetal, aside from the coextruded HDPE for fuel tanks. Metal fuel tanks are being replaced by six-layer, coextruded ones at a steady pace at major OEMs, with forecasts that plastics will penetrate 70% of all fuel tanks by the year 2000. The new systems were featured at the Society of Automotive Engineers International Congress and Exposition in Detroit, MI, on Feb 24-27, 1997.

Abstract

In 2005, Tokyo was the dioxin capital of the world, a likely carcinogen and emitted byproduct of burning plastic (Braun n.p.). In an effort to reduce the city’s environmental impact and community health risk, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government instituted “Tokyo’s Big Change: The 10-Year Plan” in 2006 (Nagata n.p.). The 10-Year Plan and Tokyo Vision 2020, the environmental plan subsequently installed by the TMG after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake following the Fukushima disaster, are comprehensive plans that both outline eight major goals on the path to environmental sustainability, urban progress, and economic growth through ecological civility, industrial involvement, and inspired citizen participation (“Tokyo Committed”n.p.; “Creating the future” n.p.). My goal with this research is to examine the societal involvement and rhetorical framework of the 10-Year Plan and Vision 2020, and compare this to current environmental policies and practices in the United States, such as the Clean Water Act, the President’s Climate Action Plan, and the Environmental Protection Agency’s press release regarding greenhouse gas emissions.The environmental, economic, and cultural implications and success of the 10-Year Plan and Vision 2020 exemplify its significance as a case study of the collaborative spirit and the progress that can be achieved on a national, and even global, level through communally and commercially inclusive communication On a larger level, my research aims to identify a collaborative model of sustainability that utilizes the economic and cultural environments present within reform rather than holding reform hostage as a declaration of authoritative power. Abstract

Science has enjoyed unprecedented public support for the past half century. Now, in the face of increasing loss of biodiversity and continuing environmental degradation, there are serious questions regarding renewal of the endangered species laws, passage of environmental legislation, and surprisingly, in this new millennium, a successful campaign based on fear and misinformation has revived an anti-evolution sentiment. Organized support for legislative science appropriations, curricular reforms and enhancement of the image of science and scientists is well developed in chemistry, physics, geology, the medical sciences and molecular biology. In organismal and integrative biology, advocacy of the field comes primarily from individuals and volunteer committees. Although the latter are important and significant activities, this ad hoc advocacy means that effective, full time, coordinated, professional public advocacy for our fields is minimal. To be effective at this critical time, we have to empower our professional societies to commit to such public advocacy or face continuing erosion of public and governmental support.

Rural and Urban Attitudes and Perceptions Seventy-five urban and 75 rural residents participated in a study of attitudes toward and perceptions of wilderness. Results of an attitude questionnaire indicated that both rural and urban respondents expressed a positive attitude toward wilderness and a relatively high degree of environmental concern. However, the findings of a photo task demonstrated that the two populations responded to the questionnaire on the basis of a different understanding of what constitutes wilderness; that is, respondents from the two areas perceived the same environment in different ways.

Η παρούσα εργασία / έρευνα πραγματεύεται το περιεχόμενο της Γενικής Άδειας Πλοίου 2013, που οριστικοποιήθηκε από τον Οργανισμό Περιβαλλοντικής Προστασίας της Αμερικής για τις συμπτωματικές απορρίψεις συγκεκριμένων κατηγοριών πλοίων, που δραστηριοποιούνται στα εγχώρια ύδατα της Αμερικής. Η άδεια καθορίζει όρια και περιορισμούς συνολικά για 27 κατηγορίες απορρίψεων που ενδέχεται να προκύψουν κατά την κανονική λειτουργία ενός πλοίου, καθώς και σχετικά συστήματα διαχείρισης και ελέγχου. Η εργασία αναλύει τα κόστη και τα οφέλη που προκύπτουν από την εφαρμογή των νέων απαιτήσεων της άδειας. Η ανάλυση του κόστους παραθέτει τα πρόσθετα κόστη που θα προκύψουν για τους πλοιοκτήτες / διαχειριστές των πλοίων, όσον αφορά την συμμόρφωσή τους με τις νέες απαιτήσεις της άδειας. Ενώ, η ανάλυση οφέλους εκτιμά τα προσδοκώμενα οφέλη από την εφαρμογή της άδειας, τόσο για το οικοσύστημα της Αμερικής, όσο και για τα πλοία, σαν μονάδα. Τέλος, η έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε, αναλύει τα κόστη που προέκυψαν από την εφαρμογή της άδειας για τις ελληνικές ναυτιλιακές εταιρείες, αλλά και τα οφέλη που παρατηρήθηκαν από την εφαρμογή των νέων απαιτήσεων, συγκριτικά με το μέγεθος του στόλου που διαχειρίζονται και τα τελικά κόστη συμμόρφωσης., This dissertation / study analyzes the contents of the Vessel General Permit 2013, finalized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, regarding incidental discharges of specific categories of vessels, calling the United States inland waters. VGP 2013 defines general effluent limits applicable to 27 specific discharge categories that may occur during the normal operation of the vessel, as well as relevant monitoring and inspection. The dissertation presents the costs and benefits incurred from the implementation of the permit's requirements. An economic analysis was conducted to evaluate the costs that may incur by complying with the additional requirements of the VGP 2013, for the vessel's ship-owners / managers. The benefit analysis describes the expected benefits to be derived from the implementation of the VGP 2013 requirements for the United States, as well as the vessel as a unit. Finally, the survey deals with the costs occurred arising from the implementation of the permit by the Greek shipping companies and the estimated benefits from the compliance with the new requirements on board the vessel, in connection to the economic size and the total compliance costs of their companies.
