In this article, I explore the concept of 'solidarity' through an examination of the alliances and disjunctures that shaped a transnational campaign against the Coca-Cola Company. I consider how the balance of power within cross-class coalitions influenced the framing of issues and the development of tactics, and I examine the tensions that arose among diverse groups who chose to struggle together but shared different goats and perspectives. I argue that the tabor philanthropy of northern activists on behalf of Colombian workers could not substitute for the tabor solidarity that Colombian workers asked of their northern allies. My study suggests that transnational activists from the North focus on tactics that push states, as well as corporations, to protect tabor rights and that they pay closer attention to the analyses and objectives of the working people with whom they claim solidarity. South Africa's triple transition--toward political democracy, economic liberalization, and racial equity--has generated a variety of responses at workplace level. Rather than a uniform response, a hybrid mix of managerial strategies is emerging that reveals both continuities and discontinuities with past practices. We argue that the challenge facing the South African workplace is to balance the contradictory demands of efficiency, employee rights, and equity arising out of the triple transition. What sort of a trade off, if any, between these competing pressures is required and what is politically feasible remains to be seen. What is clear from our case studies is that the challenge cannot be met unless the legacy of the apartheid workplace regime is decisively overcome. This article discusses the efforts to establish a social clause within the World Trade Organization. The author asserts that no international debate over this issue has thusfar existed, and suggests a model of global solidarity, emphasizing the necessity of dialogue regarding international labor rights and campaigning, and which should be opposed to and independent of the capitalist trade.

This article discusses anti-sweatshop movements that have developed from civic-minded consumers; many college activists have been successful at politicizing the production-consumption chain of marketing and sports industries at universities. The role of public relations professionals in defining and shaping the movement against sweatshops is addressed; the campaign against Nike is evaluated as an example of political activism employed by computer-skilled young people against transnational corporations in a global economy.

This paper examines the debate on labor standards between neoclassicals and institutionalists from a feminist perspective and elaborates on some key elements of a feminist approach to labor standards. It argues that both neoclassical and institutionalists share a gender-based definition of labor. Rejecting the notion that upward harmonization can be achieved by reliance on deregulated markets or labor standard regulation alone, the feminist perspective calls for new approaches to policy and politics.
