Sequential estimation using the traditional discrete Kalman filter typically assumes the measurement time and state update time are coincident. This is often a poor assumption in realistic measurement scenarios where the data can be received from multiple sources at differing times. This paper develops the necessary algorithm adjustments needed for the Kalman filter to readily process measurement data that arrive at varying times and with non-stationary noise. The algorithm is applied to a relevant problem of orbit determination using one-way uplink radiometric tracking of a spacecraft (in the present case a Mars orbiter).

There is no equivalent of GPS in “deep space,” that is beyond the Earth Moon system (and use of GPS beyond LEO and MEO is already problematic.) NASA has been awarded a patent on the concept of the “Deep-space Positioning System” (DPS) which is a self-contained instrument concept that would use in-situ observations to provide an automated and autonomous means of determining its position in the Solar System, and at least as important, its position relative to a target, whether that target is a planet, asteroid, moon or comet. In addition, the DPS system computes trajectory change parameters, as necessary to keep a spacecraft on a planned trajectory. Implementation options include the use of a radio receiver to receive a frequency beacon from a non-in-situ source for additional navigation information over and above that which can be provided by the cameras that are the principal data source of DPS. This paper discusses the DPS instrument concept, and its potential use in deep space.

Spacecraft carrying optical communication lasers can be treated as artificial stars, whose relative astrometry to Gaia reference stars provides spacecraft positions in the plane-of-sky for optical navigation. To be comparable to current Deep Space Network delta-Differential One-way Ranging measurements, thus sufficient for navigation, nanoradian optical astrometry is required. Here we describe our error budget, techniques for achieving nanoradian level ground-base astrometry, and preliminary results from a 1 m telescope. We discuss also how these spacecraft may serve as artificial reference stars for adaptive optics, high precision astrometry to detect exoplanets, and tying reference frames defined by radio and optical measurements.

The Deep Space Atomic Clock mission is developing a small, mercury ion atomic clock with Allan deviation of less than 1e-14 at one day (current estimates < 3e-15) for a yearlong space demonstration beginning late- 2016/early-2017. DSAC’s stability yields one-way radiometric data precision on par with current two-way data. Uplink one-way tracking with an appropriately configured radio enables the possibility of onboard, autonomous radio navigation. This study examines the modeling needed to efficiently process this data for an onboard implementation.

Estimation of Europa's gravitational tide can provide strong evidence of the existence of a subsurface liquid ocean. Due to limited close approach tracking data, a Europa flyby mission suffers strong coupling between the gravity solution quality and tracking data quantity and quality. This work explores utilizing Low Gain Antennas with the Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC) to provide abundant high accuracy uplink-only radiometric tracking data. DSAC's performance, expected to exhibit an Allan Deviation of less than 3e-15 at one day, provides long-term stability and accuracy on par with the Deep Space Network ground clocks, enabling one-way radiometric tracking data with accuracy equivalent to that of its two-way counterpart. The feasibility of uplink-only Doppler tracking via the coupling of LGAs and DSAC and the expected Doppler data quality are presented. Violations of the Kalman filter's linearization assumptions when state perturbations are included in the flyby analysis results in poor determination of the Europa gravitational tide parameters. B-plane targeting constraints are statistically determined, and a solution to the linearization issues via pre-flyby approach orbit determination is proposed and demonstrated.

DSAC-enabled one-way tracking will benefit navigation and radio science by increasing the quantity and quality of tracking data. Additionally, DSAC would be a key component to fully-autonomous onboard radio navigation useful for time-sensitive situations. Potential deep space applications of DSAC are presented, including orbit determination of a Mars orbiter and gravity science on a Europa flyby mission.

The Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC) mission will demonstrate the on-orbit performance of a high-accuracy, high-stability miniaturized mercury ion atomic clock during a year-long experiment in Low Earth Orbit. DSAC's timing error requirement provides the frequency stability necessary to perform deep space navigation based solely on one-way radiometric tracking data. Compared to a two-way tracking paradigm, DSAC-enabled one-way tracking will benefit navigation and radio science by increasing the quantity and quality of tracking data. Additionally, DSAC also enables fully-autonomous onboard navigation useful for time-sensitive situations. The technology behind the mercury ion atomic clock and a DSAC mission overview are presented. Example deep space applications of DSAC, including navigation of a Mars orbiter and Europa flyby gravity science, highlight the benefits of DSAC-enabled one-way Doppler tracking.

The traditional role that altimetry and velocimetry have played in spacecraft landings is to provide a direct measure of the spacecraft's surface altitude and surface relative velocity; however, their role in determining an inertial position and velocity has seen limited investigation. In this study, inertially sensitive measurement models for altimetry and velocimetry are formulated that include relevant instrument and environment error models. These models are applied and simulated for a realistic lunar landing scenario that is based on recent work for NASA's Altair lander. The preliminary results indicate that inertial landing accuracies of several meters are possible.

The Morbiter software numerically averages an osculating orbit s equations of motion (EOM) to arrive at the mean orbit s EOMs, which are then numerically propagated to obtain the long-term orbital ephemerides. The long-term evolution characteristics, and stability, of an orbit are best characterized using a mean element propagation of the perturbed, two-body variational equations of motion. The average process eliminates short period terms, leaving only secular and long period effects. Doing this avoids the Fourier series expansions and truncations required by the traditional analytic methods.

This paper reviews the currently planned Altair Optical Navigation (OpNav) system. The discussion includes description of the OpNav camera manifest. The Altair OpNav plan envisions one, OpNav camera assembly, with perhaps a functional backup that includes a wide angle-imager (of 40 deg to 60 deg field of view - FOV), and a narrow angle imager (of 1 to 3 deg FOV) co-mounted on a 2-degree-of-freedom gimbal. Both imagers are assumed to be relatively wide aperture and large dynamic range to provide excellent short-exposure images at mid-latitudes, and adequate images of longer-exposure near the poles. Landmark modeling and tracking methodology is discussed, including the stereophotoclinometry method assumed to be used to obtain high-accuracy terrain maps at lunar landing sites of 1 - 2 m, and 50 - 100 m elsewhere, using the images expected to be obtained from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Characteristics of the OpNav navigation system are discussed and architecture and results from landing simulations presented, showing expected landing accuracies of better than 10m.

Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) is the measurement and control of spacecraft position, velocity, and attitude in support of mission objectives. This paper provides an overview of a preliminary design of the GN&C system of the Lunar Lander Altair. Key functions performed by the GN&C system in various mission phases will first be described. A set of placeholder GN&C sensors that is needed to support these functions is next described. To meet Crew safety requirements, there must be high degrees of redundancy in the selected sensor configuration. Two sets of thrusters, one on the Ascent Module (AM) and the other on the Descent Module (DM), will be used by the GN&C system. The DM thrusters will be used, among other purposes, to perform course correction burns during the Trans-lunar Coast. The AM thrusters will be used, among other purposes, to perform precise angular and translational controls of the ascent module in order to dock the ascent module with Orion. Navigation is the process of measurement and control of the spacecraft's "state" (both the position and velocity vectors of the spacecraft). Tracking data from the Earth-Based Ground System (tracking antennas) as well as data from onboard optical sensors will be used to estimate the vehicle state. A driving navigation requirement is to land Altair on the Moon with a landing accuracy that is better than 1 km (radial 95%). Preliminary performance of the Altair GN&C design, relative to this and other navigation requirements, will be given. Guidance is the onboard process that uses the estimated state vector, crew inputs, and pre-computed reference trajectories to guide both the rotational and the translational motions of the spacecraft during powered flight phases. Design objectives of reference trajectories for various mission phases vary. For example, the reference trajectory for the descent "approach" phase (the last 3-4 minutes before touchdown) will sacrifice fuel utilization efficiency in order to provide landing site visibility for both the crew and the terrain hazard detection sensor system. One output of Guidance is the steering angle commands sent to the 2 degree-of-freedom (dof) gimbal actuation system of the descent engine. The engine gimbal actuation system is controlled by a Thrust Vector Control algorithm that is designed taking into account the large quantities of sloshing liquids in tanks mounted on Altair. In this early design phase of Altair, the GN&C system is described only briefly in this paper and the emphasis is on the GN&C architecture (that is still evolving). Multiple companion papers will provide details that are related to navigation, optical navigation, guidance, fuel sloshing, rendezvous and docking, machine-pilot interactions, and others. The similarities and differences of GN&C designs for Lunar and Mars landers are briefly compared.

Future manned space missions will travel beyond low Earth orbit with more stringent navigation requirements and fewer navigation resources than used for the Apollo Program of the 1960s. A study has been performed to assess radiometric and optical tracking capabilities necessary to meet nominal and contingency Earth entry flight path angle requirements. Results indicate that 3 tracking stations will be insufficient for meeting nominal entry requirements, while the performance of a 6 station architecture is dependent on the entry geometry. Optical tracking results indicate that a narrow-angle camera is required for satisfying contingency Earth return requirements.

Mean element propagation of perturbed two body orbits has as its mathematical basis averaging theory of nonlinear dynamical systems. Averaged mean elements define the long-term evolution characteristics of an orbit. Using averaging theory, a near identity transformation can be found that transforms the mean elements back to the osculating elements that contain short period terms in addition to the secular and long period mean elements. The ability to perform the conversion is necessary so that orbit design conducted in mean elements can be converted back into osculating results. In the present work, this near identity transformation is found using the Fast Fourier Transform. An efficient method is found that is capable of recovering the osculating elements to first order

A document discusses the continuing development of a navigation system that would enable a spacecraft to approach Mars on a trajectory precise enough to enable the spacecraft to land within 1 km of a specified location on the Martian surface. This degree of accuracy would represent an order-of-magnitude improvement over that now obtained in radiometric tracking by use of the Deep Space Network. The navigation system would be implemented largely in software running in digital processors in the Electra transceiver, the Mars Network s standard radio transceiver, that would be in both the approaching spacecraft and Mars Network orbiter. The Mars Network is an ad hoc constellation of existing and future Mars science orbiters and dedicated telecommunication orbiters that has been established as a communication and navigation infrastructure to support the exploration of Mars. The software would exploit the sensory and data-processing capabilities of the Electra transceivers to gather Doppler-shift and other radiometric tracking data and process those data into trajectories data that would be accurate to within 0.3 km at the point of entry into the Martian atmosphere (as needed to land within 1 km of a target surface location).

A NASA Mars technology project is described that is building a prototype embedded real time Mars approach navigation capability which can be hosted on the Mars Network's Electra transceiver. The paper motivates the reason for doing real time Mars approach navigation via a set of analyses demonstrating its utility for enabling Mars pin-point landing (less than 1-km landing error). The development approach, software design, and test results are discussed. Finally, the way forward towards a flight demonstration on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is presented.
