Abstract

A detailed description is given of the analysis of neutral kaons decaying to pi (+)pi (-), based on the complete set of data collected with the CPLEAR experiment. Using a novel approach involving initially strangeness-tagged K-0 and (K) over bar (0), the time-dependent decay-rate asymmetry has been measured. This asymmetry, resulting from the interference between the K-S and K-L decay amplitudes, has enabled both the magnitude and phase of the CP-violation parameter, eta (+-), to be measured, with a precision comparable to that of the current world-average values. Abstract

The CPT-violation parameters \redd\ and \imd\ determined recently by CPLEAR are used to evaluate the \kn --\knb\ mass and decay-width differences, as given by the difference between the diagonal elements of the neutral-kaon mixing matrix $({\mathrm M}-\i\Gamma/2)$. The results --- $({\mathrm M}_{\kn\kn}-{\mathrm M}_{\knb\knb}) = ( -1.5 \pm 2.0 )\times10^{-18}$ \gev\ and $(\Gamma_{\kn\kn}-\Gamma_{\knb\knb}) = ( 3.9 \pm 4.2 )\times 10^{-18}$ \gev\ --- are consistent with CPT invariance. The CPT invariance is also shown to hold within a few times $10^{-3}-10^{-4}$ for many of the amplitudes describing neutral-kaon decays to different final states.

Abstract

We test the Principle of Equivalence for particles and antiparticles, using CPLEAR data on tagged K-0 and (K) over bar(0) decays into pi(+) pi(-). For the first time, we search for possible annual, monthly and diurnal modulations of the observables \eta(+-)\ and phi(+-), that could be correlated with variations in astrophysical potentials. Within the accuracy of CPLEAR, the measured values of \eta(+-)\ and phi(+-) are found not to be correlated with changes of the gravitational potential. We analyze data assuming effective scalar, vector and tensor interactions, and we conclude that the Principle of Equivalence between particles and antiparticles holds to a level of 6.5, 4.3 and 1.8 X 10(-9), respectively, for scalar, vector and tensor potentials originating from the Sun with a range much greater than the distance Earth-Sun. We also study energy-dependent effects that might arise from vector or tensor interactions. Finally, we compile upper limits on the gravitational coupling difference between K-0 and (K) over bar(0) as a function of the scalar, vector and tensor interaction range. Abstract

We apply a forward dispersion relation to the regeneration amplitude for kaon scattering on C-12 using all available data. The CPLEAR data at low energies allow the determination of the net contribution from the subthreshold region which turns out to be much smaller than earlier evaluations, solving a long standing puzzle. Abstract

Data from the CPLEAR experiment, together with the most recent world averages for some of the neutral-kaon parameters, were constrained with the Bell-Steinberger (or unitarity) relation, allowing the T-violation parameter Re(epsilon) and the CPT-violation parameter Im(delta) of the neutral-kaon mixing matrix to be determined with an increased accuracy: Re(epsilon)=(164.9 +/- 2.5) x 10(-5), Im(delta)=(2.4 +/- 5.0) x 10(-5). Moreover, the constraint allows the CM-violation parameter for the neutral-kaon semileptonic decays, Re(), to be determined for the first time. The Delta S not equal Delta Q parameters Re(x_) and Im(x(+)) are given with an increased accuracy. The quantity Re(y + x_), which enters the T-violation CPLEAR asymmetry previously published, is determined to be (- 0.2 +/- 0.3) x 10(-3). The value obtained for Re(delta) is in agreement with the one resulting from a previous unconstrained fit and has a slightly smaller error. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V, All rights reserved. Abstract

We study pi pi correlations in the exclusive reaction (p) over bar p --> 2 pi(+)2 pi(-)pi(0) at rest with complete reconstruction of the kinematics for each event. Inclusive and differential distributions properly normalized show an enhancement for small invariant masses M++,M-- of like-pion pairs. An even stronger enhancement is seen for the double differential distributions for low pion-pair masses. The signal is strongest when the pi(0) energy is large and much weaker when this energy is small. Dynamical models with resonances in the final state are confronted with the data. For the kinematic situation where the rho 3 pi channel is important the simulation predicts a large pion correlation for the double differential density, qualitatively explaining the observed bahaviour. The stochastic HBT mechanism is not supported by these findings for the exclusive annihilation reaction studied. European Physical Journal C

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment measured the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged \kzerob\ and \kzero\ decaying to \threepizero\ in order to study the interference between the CP-violating \kshort\ and the CP-conserving \klong\ decay amplitudes. Without assuming CPT invariance, we obtain for the CP-violation parameter \etazero\ the values $\reetazero = 0.18 \pm 0.14_{\mbox{stat.}} \pm 0.06_{\mbox{syst.}} $ and $\imetazero = 0.15 \pm 0.20_{\mbox{stat.}} \pm 0.03_{\mbox{syst.}} .$ Requiring \reetazero\ to be equal to \ree\ we obtain $\imetazero = -0.05 \pm 0.12_{\mbox{stat.}} \pm 0.05_{\mbox{syst.}} .$ The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio of the $\kshort \ra \threepizero$ decay is deduced to be $B_{\kshort\ra\threepizero} < 1.9 \times 10^{-5}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Abstract

We have improved by two orders of magnitude the limit currently available for the CPT violation parameter \red . To this purpose we have analyzed the full sample of neutral-kaon decays to \semi\ recorded in the CPLEAR experiment, where the strangeness of the neutral kaons was tagged at production and decay time. An appropriate function of the measured decay rates, including information from the analysis of \pip\pim\ decay channel, gives directly \red . The result $\red = (3.0 \pm 3.3_\mathrm{{stat}} \pm 0.6_\mathrm{{syst}}) \times 10^{-4}$ is compatible with zero. Values for the parameters $\imd$, $\rexm$ and $\imxp$ were also obtained.

Abstract

Abstract

The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the \PKz \PaKz ~system produced in the reaction $\Pap \Pp \rightarrow \PKz \PaKz$ at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. The results are consistent with the QM non-separability of the wave function and exclude a spontaneous wave-function factorisation at creation (CL $ 99.99\%$).

Abstract

A detailed analysis of neutral kaons decaying to pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) is presented based on the complete data set containing half a million events. Time-dependent decay rate asymmetries are measured between initially tagged K-0 and (K) over bar(0) and for different regions of the phase space. These asymmetries, resulting from the interference between the CP-coaserving decay amplitude of K-L and the decay amplitude of K-S - either CP-violating or CP-conserving - allow the determination of the K-S parameters eta(+-0) (CP-violating) and lambda (CP-conserving), and also of the main isospin components of the K-S decay amplitude. The branching ratio of K-S --> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) (CP-conserving) is deduced directly from lambda. In addition, we extract the slope parameters describing the energy dependence of the K-L --> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) Dalitz plot. The whole set of out. results fits well within the current phenomenological picture of the neutral-kaon system including CP violation and Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). Abstract

We report on the first observation of time-reversal symmetry violation through a comparison of the probabilities of $\knb$ transforming into $\kn$ and $\kn$ into $\knb$ as a function of the neutral-kaon eigentime $t$. The comparison is based on the analysis of the neutral-kaon semileptonic decays recorded in the CPLEAR experiment. We report on a new measurement of the K-L-K-S mass difference Delta m using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to e pi nu. Abstract

We study pi pi correlations in the exclusive reaction (p) over bar p --> 2 pi(+)2 pi(-) at rest measured by the CPLEAR experiment. Avoiding the introduction of an arbitrary reference sample, we analyse differential distributions for equal charge pion pairs removing the phase-space factor event by event. A peak at small relative momenta is most pronounced for large total momentum of the pair. The physical implications of bosonic symmetrization for the properties of the pion source, in particular its radius, are briefly discussed. The two extremes considered are the chaotic Hanbury-Brown-Twiss mechanism and the coherent Skyrmion model. European Physical Journal C

Abstract

The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the \PKz \PaKz ~system produced in the reaction $\Pap \Pp \rightarrow \PKz \PaKz$ at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. The results are consistent with the QM non-separability of the wave function and exclude a spontaneous wave-function factorisation at creation (CL $> 99.99\%$).

Abstract

The interference between CP-conserving $\ks$ and $\kl \rightarrow \threepi$ decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial $\ko$ and $\kob$ separately for the phase space regions $E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^+)> E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^-)$ and $E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^+)< E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^-)$. For the parameter $\lambda$ we found $\mbox{\rm Re}(\lambda )=0.036\pm0.010(\mbox{\rm stat.}) ^{+0.002}_{-0.003} (\mbox{\rm syst.)}$ and $\mbox{Im}(\lambda)$ consistent with zero, leading for the CP-conserving $\ks \rightarrow \threepi$ decay, to a branching ratio $\mbox{\rm B} = \left[4.1 ^{+2.5}_{-1.9 } (\mbox{\rm stat.}) ^{+0.5} _{-0.6} (\mbox{\rm syst.)}\right] \times 10^{-7}$.

Abstract

The essential characteristics of the neutral kaon system and the way CP, T, and possible CPT violations may be observed in it are recalled. The principle of the CPLEAH experiment is presented CPLEAH experimental results in the semi-leptonic decay channels are given and discussed. It is shown, in particular, that direct. time reversal invariance violation will be experimentally observed for the first time.

Abstract

The Bose-Einstein correlations (BEG) observed in hadronic experiments are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the factors that can modify the BEC parameters. The experimental results are studied and the behavior of the parameters is examined. The available data and the currently used parametrizations seem to indicate that the radius of particle sources does not depend on the energy of the system. However, new types of parametrization have been introduced and applied in certain experiments, which show a different behavior. We present the first direct observation of T violation in the neutral kaon system, showing a positive signal with a significance of more than two standard deviations. The result does not rely on the validity of the CPT theorem.
