The study of animal movement provides insights into underlying ecological processes and informs analyses of behaviour and resource use, which have implications for species management and conservation. The tools used to study animal movement have evolved over the past decades, allowing for data collection from a variety of species, including those living in remote environments. Satellite-linked radio and GPS collars have been used to study polar bear (Ursus maritimus) ecology and movements throughout the circumpolar Arctic for over 50 years. However, due to morphology and growth constraints, only adult female polar bears can be reliably collared. Collars have proven to be safe, but there has been opposition to their use, resulting in a deficiency in data across much of the species' range. To bolster knowledge of movement characteristics and behaviours for polar bears other than adult females, while also providing an alternative to collars, we tested the use of fur- and ear-mounted telemetry tags that can be affixed to polar bears of any sex and age. We tested three fur tag designs (SeaTrkr, tribrush and pentagon tags), which we affixed to 15 adult and 1 subadult male polar bears along the coast of Hudson Bay during August–September 2021–2022. Fur tags were compared with ear tags deployed on 42 subadult and adult male polar bears captured on the coast or the sea ice between 2016 and 2022. We used data from the tags to quantify the amount of time subadult and adult males spent resting versus traveling while on land. Our results show the three fur tag designs remained functional for shorter mean durations (SeaTrkr = 58 days; tribrush = 47 days; pentagon = 22 days) than ear tags (121 days), but positional error estimates were comparable among the Argos-equipped tags. The GPS/Iridium-equipped SeaTrkr fur tags provided higher resolution and more frequent location data. Combined, the tags provided sufficient data to model different behavioural states. Furthermore, as hypothesized, subadult and adult male polar bears spent the majority of their time resting while on land, increasing time spent traveling as temperatures cooled. Background: Red Ear Syndrome is a burning sensation and erythema of the ear, associated with a various number of disorders including migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, autoimmune disorders etc. Theories for RES pathophysiology have developed from current understandings of comorbid conditions. Characterizing the underlying mechanism of RES is crucial for defining effective treatments. Case presentation: Three caucasian patients, ages 15, 47, and 67 years, with migraine, one with erythromelalgia are reported in this manuscript. RES pathophysiology is not fully understood due to its variable clinical presentation and numerous comorbid conditions, making it difficult to identify effective treatments. Conclusion: RES seems to be largely treatment-resistant, and most options involve treating the associated disorders and minimizing pain. Congenital single-sided deafness (SSD) leads to an aural preference syndrome that is characterized by overrepresentation of the hearing ear in the auditory system. Cochlear implantation (CI) of the deaf ear is an effective treatment for SSD. However, the newly introduced auditory input in congenital SSD often does not reach expectations in late-implanted CI recipients with respect to binaural hearing and speech perception. In a previous study, a reduction of the interaural time difference (ITD) sensitivity has been shown in unilaterally congenitally deaf cats (uCDCs). In the present study, we focused on the interaural level difference (ILD) processing in the primary auditory cortex. The uCDC group was compared with hearing cats (HCs) and bilaterally congenitally deaf cats (CDCs). The ILD representation was reorganized, replacing the preference for the contralateral ear with a preference for the hearing ear, regardless of the cortical hemisphere. In accordance with the previous study, uCDCs were less sensitive to interaural time differences than HCs, resulting in unmodulated ITD responses, thus lacking directional information. Such incongruent ITDs and ILDs cannot be integrated for binaural sound source localization. In normal hearing, the predominant effect of each ear is excitation of the auditory cortex in the contralateral cortical hemisphere and inhibition in the ipsilateral hemisphere. In SSD, however, auditory pathways reorganized such that the hearing ear produced greater excitation in both cortical hemispheres and the deaf ear produced weaker excitation and preserved inhibition in both cortical hemispheres. 3D‐printed cell‐laden hydrogels as tissue constructs show great promise in generating living tissues for medicine. Currently, the maturation of 3D‐printed constructs into living tissues remains challenge, since commonly used hydrogels struggle to provide an ideal microenvironment for the seeded cells. In this study, a cell‐adaptable nanocolloidal hydrogel is created for 3D printing of maturable tissue constructs. The nanocolloidal hydrogel is composed of interconnected nanoparticles, which is prepared by the self‐assembly and subsequent photocrosslinking of the gelatin methacryloyl solutions. Cells can get enough space to grow and migrate within the hydrogel through squeezing the flexible nanocolloidal networks. Meanwhile, the nanostructure can promote the seeded cells to proliferate and produce matrix proteins through mechanotransduction. Using digital light process‐based 3D printing technology, it can rapidly customize cartilage tissue constructs. After implantation, these tissue constructs efficiently matured into cartilage tissues for the articular cartilage defect repair and ear cartilage reconstruction in vivo. Introduction: Hearing decline stands as the most prevalent single sensory deficit associated with the aging process. Giving compelling evidence suggesting a protective effect associated with the efferent auditory system, the goal of our study was to characterize the age-related changes in the number of efferent medial olivocochlear (MOC) synapses regulating outer hair cell (OHC) activity compared with the number of afferent inner hair cell ribbon synapses in CBA/J mice over their lifespan. Methods: Organs of Corti of 3-month-old CBA/J mice were compared with mice aged between 10 and 20 months, grouped at 2-month intervals. For each animal, one ear was used to characterize the synapses between the efferent MOC fibers and the outer hair cells (OHCs), while the contralateral ear was used to analyze the ribbon synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and type I afferent nerve fibers of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Each cochlea was separated in apical, middle, and basal turns, respectively. Results: The first significant age-related decline in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses was observed in the basal cochlear turn at 14 months, the middle turn at 16 months, and the apical turn at 18 months of age. In contrast, efferent MOCOHC synapses in CBA/J mice exhibited a less pronounced loss due to aging which only became significant in the basal and middle turns of the cochlea by 20 months of age. Discussion: This study illustrates an age-related reduction on efferent MOC innervation of OHCs in CBA/J mice starting at 20 months of age. Our findings indicate that the morphological decline of efferent MOC-OHC synapses due to aging occurs notably later than the decline observed in afferent IHC-SGN ribbon synapses. Background: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses reported varying degrees of cognitive failure. To prioritize patient safety in clinical settings, it is important and necessary to address and mitigate the symptoms of cognitive failure among nurses. Aim: This study was conducted in Iran to evaluate the impact of ear acupressure on occupational cognitive failure in nurses. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted with 54 nurses who experienced cognitive failure in 2022. Sampling was performed by convenience. Fifty-six nurses who scored 40 or higher on the occupational cognitive failure questionnaire were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (28 subjects) or the sham group (28 subjects). In the intervention group, pressure was applied to the shen-men point, zero point, hippocampus, master cerebral, brain, and memory 1 and 2 of the earlobes for six weeks using Vaccaria seeds. In the sham group, a sticker without seeds was applied at the same points as in the intervention group, and no pressure was applied. Cognitive failure was assessed at the beginning of the study (T0), at the end of the intervention (sixth week of study, T1), and four weeks after the end of the intervention (tenth week of study, T2). The data were collected using contextual data questionnaires and the Occupational Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (OCFQ). The data obtained from 54 nurses (28 in the sham group and 26 in the intervention group) were analyzed by SPSS v16 using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: The two groups had no significant differences regarding background variables. The between-group analysis revealed a significant interaction effect of time and intervention on cognitive failure (F = 60.320, p < 0.001, effect size = 0.537). The cognitive failure score in the intervention group was significantly lower at the end of the intervention and one month later than that in the sham group (p < 0.001). Within-group analysis revealed a significant difference in the cognitive failure scores of the intervention group at T0, T1, and T2 (61.231 ± 14.230, 34.000 ± 14.659, and 29.808 ± 14.266, respectively; F = 52.331, p < 0.001, effect size = 0.677). However, in the sham group, the cognitive failure score exhibited a brief but significant increase at T0, T1, and T2 (54.786 ± 11.239, 56.250 ± 10.950, and 56.000 ± 11.337, respectively; F = 6.369, p = 0.006, effect size = 0.191). Conclusion: Auriculotherapy has shown promise in improving occupational cognitive failure in nurses. It is recommended that nurses consider incorporating auriculotherapy as a complementary treatment modality, particularly through self-treatment programs, when experiencing symptoms of cognitive impairment. Background: Pharmacologic immunosuppression regimes are commonly employed in stem cell clinical trials to mitigate host immune rejection and promote survival and viability of transplanted cells. Immunosuppression and cell survival has been extensively studied in retinal and spinal tissues. The applicability of stem cell therapy is rapidly expanding to other sensory organs such as the ear and hearing. As regenerative therapy is directed to new areas, a greater understanding of immunosuppression strategies and their efficacy is required to facilitate translation to organ-specific biologic microenvironments. Objective: This systematic review appraises the current literature regarding immunosuppression strategies employed in stem cell trials of retinal and neural cells. Methods: This systematic review was performed in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Inclusion criteria included studies presenting data on neural or retinal cells as part of an in-human clinical trial that detailed the immunosuppression regime used. Exclusion criteria included non-English language studies, animal studies, review articles, case reports, editorials, and letters. The databases Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to February 2024. Risk of bias was evaluated using the ROBINS-I tool. Results: Eighteen articles fit the inclusion criteria. Nine articles concerned retinal cells, 5 concerned spinal cord injury, and 4 concerned amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A multi-drug and short-term immunosuppression regime were commonly employed in the identified studies. Detected immune responses in treated patients were rare. Common immunosuppression paradigms included tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and tapering doses of steroids. Local immunosuppression with steroids was employed in some studies concerning retinal diseases. Discussion: A short-term course of systemic immunosuppression seemed efficacious for most included studies, with some showing grafted cells viable months to years after immunosuppression had stopped. Background: Ménière's disease is a chronic condition of the inner ear that causes vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. Its diagnosis relies on clinical criteria that are subjective and pure-tone audiometry results that are not specific. Its pathological substrate is endolymphatic hydrops. Its imaging was recently made possible by the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. This technique was primarily tested on 3 T. Our objective was to prove its feasibility using a 1.5 T magnet. Methods: We conducted a prospective study including 30 patients who fulfilled the Bárány society criteria for Ménière's disease. We performed the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence on all patients. We used it to look for and grade endolymphatic hydrops in the utricle, the saccule and the cochlear canal using the Kahn method. Results: We found endolymphatic hydrops in all of the 30 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Ménière's disease. We had no false positives and only one false negative with a patient presenting with bilateral disease clinically but having endolymphatic hydrops only on one side. Thus, our correspondence rate between clinical and imaging findings was 97%. Conclusions: It is possible to diagnose endolymphatic hydrops with the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence using a 1.5 T MRI machine. Since Ménière's disease diagnosis is sometimes tricky, imaging endolymphatic hydrops can aid in the diagnosis when the clinical picture is incomplete. It also helps guide invasive treatment plans. Feasibility at 1.5 T ensures broader access to the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. A horse with head trauma induced by falling can have a traumatic brain injury or a fracture of the ossea part of the external ear canal. The aim of this study is to find the complications of a head trauma. The aim of the second study is to verify the deafness as a cause of behavioral disorder in horses. A three-year-old Hannoverian gelding fell down and injured the left lateral region of his head. After getting up the gelding had a bloody discharge out of the left ear. The neurological exam had shown slowly ear movements, painful left ear basis and left head tilt. The endoscopy of the guttural pouches was normal. The CT image detected a transversal fractur of the left osseus part of the external ear canal. Thirteen weeks after falling down the otoscopy of the cartilaginous and osseus part including the tympanic membrane of the right ear were normal (grading I/III). The protrusion caused by the fracture in the osseus part of the left ear prevented the view to the tympanic membrane. The epithelium of the osseus part was severe reddened and swollen which are signs of an acute external otitis. The threshold of normal hearing level of the right ear was 30 dB. The brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) of the right ear showed prolonged latencies of wave III (2.95 ms, normal 2.86) and V (5.80 ms, normal 4.62) and interpeak latencies I-III (1.65 ms, normal 1.33) and I-V (4.50 ms, normal 1.76) which were showing a mild sensorineurale hearing deficit based on traumatic brain injury. This traumatic brain injury could induce an axonal damage of the brainstem auditory pathway. The threshold of normal hearing level of the left ear was 80 dB. BAER of left ear had no identifiable peaks and therefore no measurable latencies and interpeak latencies. These findings concluded to the diagnosis of sever conductive hearing deficit based on the protrusion in the left osseus part in this gelding with head trauma. The behavioral disorders of American Paint Horses were observed by the owners and these horses were refered to the equine medical clinic. The otoscopical findings of all horses were normal in the cartilaginous and osseus part (grading I/III). Achromodermia was found in all cartilaginous parts of the external ear canals. Only one horse had keratin scales around the entrance of the osseus part in both ears. All tympanic membranes were intact and transparent. The thresholds of normal hearing level on both ears of all horses were 100 dB. Absent peaks of the BAER and isoelectric lines were seen which characterize the sensorineurale deafness in all American Paint Horses. The sensorineural deafness was the reason of the behavioral disorder described by the owners. Horses with head trauma suffer from a traumatic brain injury. These horses could have a hearing deficit based on either due to a fracture of the osseus part of the external ear canal or an acute external otitis or both. Endoscopy of the guttural pouches, external ear canals and BAER should be done. Hearing deficit or deafness induce behavioral disorders which should know the owner. BACKGROUND: Several fixation methods have been described to secure the cochlear implant's receiver/stimulator, but the optimal stabilization technique is still being debated. The aim of this study was to compare the conventional technique with suture fixation to the subperiosteal tight pocket technique in terms of revision cochlear implantation rate. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on the medical records of 649 patients who underwent cochlear implantation. The study participants were divided into different groups regarding the applied surgery technique. The relationship between the fixation technique, revision rates, and the cause of revisions related to techniques was investigated. RESULTS: The overall revision rate was 2.9% (19 out of 649). There were 14 (3.5%) and 5 (2%) revision implantations in the subperiosteal tight pocket and conventional technique groups, respectively. The incidence of device failure was 2.5%, and it constituted the primary cause for revision surgery in both groups. Even though patients who had the subperiosteal tight pocket technique had a much higher rate of device failure, the results indicate that there was no significant difference between the groups, as evidenced by a P-value of .12. CONCLUSION: The conventional and subperiosteal tight pocket techniques can both be safely preferred with low revision rates in patients undergoing cochlear implantation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The listening brain must resolve the mix of sounds that reaches our ears into events, sources, and meanings. In this process, noise—sound that interferes with our ability to detect or understand sounds we need or wish to—is the primary challenge when listening. Importantly, noise to one person, or in one moment, might be an important sound to another, or in the next. Despite the many challenges posed by noise, however, human listeners generally outperform even the most sophisticated listening technologies in noisy listening environments. Because extracting noise from the sound stream is a fundamental process in listening, understanding how the brain deals with noise, in its many facets, is essential to understanding listening itself. Here, we explore what it is that the brain treats as noise and how it is processed. We conclude that the brain has multiple mechanisms for detecting and filtering out noise, and that incorporating cortico-subcortical 'listening loops' into our studies is essential to understanding this early segregation between noise and signal streams. What is noise? When does a sound form part of the acoustic background and when might it come to our attention as part of the foreground? Our brain seems to filter out irrelevant sounds in a seemingly effortless process, but how this is achieved remains opaque and, to date, unparalleled by any algorithm. In this review, we discuss how noise can be both background and foreground, depending on what a listener/brain is trying to achieve. We do so by addressing questions concerning the brain's potential bias to interpret certain sounds as part of the background, the extent to which the interpretation of sounds depends on the context in which they are heard, as well as their ethological relevance, task-dependence, and a listener's overall mental state. We explore these questions with specific regard to the implicit, or statistical, learning of sounds and the role of feedback loops between cortical and subcortical auditory structures. The aim of the research was to evaluate the feasibility of measuring the bone conduction hearing threshold using self-administered mobile audiometry. A single-centre, closed, cross-over trial was carried out on patients from the ENT Department. A mobile-based, self-administered, audiologist-assisted assessment of the bone conduction hearing threshold was carried out by means of the open-access, freeware app Hearing Test using two types of bone conduction headphones: professional B71 bone transducer and commercially available AfterShokz Openmove open-ear headphones. Seventy-seven ears. A test-retest examination revealed the lowest standard deviation for open-ear headphones at 3.33 dB (95% CI 2.92–3.79). When compared with pure tone audiometry, the intraclass correlations of 0.95 (95% CI 0.94–0.96) and 0.90 (95% CI 0.88–0.92) were obtained for the bone transducer and for the open-ear headphones, indicating excellent and good reliability, respectively. However, the regression slope of 0.67 was found for the air-bone gap when using open ear headphones, which was significantly different from 1 (p < 0.001). Open-ear headphones provide an alternative for estimating bone conduction once the air-bone gap has been adjusted by a factor of 1/0.6 7 ≅1.5. They demonstrate improved reproducibility over the bone transducer and are much easier to use with a mobile device. Background: Continuous pulse oximetry (Sp o 2) is a commonly utilized tool to obtain an indirect, noninvasive measurement of hemoglobin oxygen saturation. Difficulty obtaining measurement with Sp o 2 sensors can lead nurses to try off-label sites until they find placement that provides a signal. Currently, there is limited evidence to support this application. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of off-label placement of pulse oximetry sensors in comparison to on-label placement in adult cardiac intensive care patients. Methods: Data were collected on 24 participants. At the time of a medically necessary arterial blood gas laboratory draws, 4 Sp o 2 measurements were gathered from an on-label finger sensor, an off-label finger sensor, an on-label ear sensor, and an off-label ear sensor. Results were analyzed using 4 Pearson correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and 2 linear mixed-effect models. Results: Our study found that while both our on-label finger and off-label finger pulse oximetry sensor overestimated when compared to the arterial hemoglobin saturation (gold standard), there was greater overestimation found with the off-label placement. Though there was not a significant difference observed between the ear probe on the nose and the gold standard, figures examining off-label ear probe and gold standard measures show that, in lower ranges of oxygen saturation, the off-site probe substantially overestimates true oxygen saturation, while in higher ranges of oxygen saturation, the off-site ear probe underestimates true oxygen saturation. (1) Background: It is well-established that older persons compared with younger persons show a bias toward positive valence (a positivity effect), together with less pronounced hemispheric asymmetries, but these topics have been scarcely explored in auditory modality. (2) Methods: We presented auditory stimuli with positive, neutral, or negative emotional valence dichotically to 20 younger and 20 older participants and asked them to memorize the stimuli. In a following session, stimuli were presented binaurally, and participants had to decide whether they were new or already presented in the left/right ear. (3) Results: A higher performance by younger compared with older listeners emerged, but neither the expected Right Ear Advantage nor the positivity effect was confirmed. New stimuli were correctly categorized more frequently if they had neutral valence, whereas stimuli already presented were better recognized with negative rather than neutral or positive valence, without any age difference. (4) Conclusions: These results reveal no hemispheric asymmetries and no age difference in a memory task for auditory stimuli and suggest the existence of a bias to better encode negative content, possibly due to the crucial role of negative stimuli in everyday life. Scottish Fold cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus 1758) are one of the most well‐known and popular cat breeds in the world, characterized by their folded ears attached to the head. Very frequently, cats fall prey of different trauma and accidents that can cause bone fractures especially in the metapodial bones. The method of radiometry is used in veterinary practice to visualize and measure different parts of the animal skeleton. The aim of this study was to assess the linear parameters derived from radiographic images of the metacarpals and metatarsals in Scottish Fold cats and additionally detecting potential sexual dimorphism. Radiographic images of 24 adult Scottish Fold cats (12 male and 12 females) of different ages and weights were analysed. Six linear measurements of the metapodial bones were evaluated to investigate any differences between the sexes. The linear radiometric measurements of the five metacarpals (MC1‐5) and the four metatarsals (MT2‐5) bones were larger in male metapodial bones than that of female cats. The maximum length (Ml) of the MC1 and MC2 was statistically different between sex, respectively, (p = 0.001) and (p = 0.05). The others metacarpal bones were different in mostly all linear parameters but not statistically significant. The most significant differences between sexes were observed in the parameter of width proximal end (Wp) of MC1‐3 (p = 0.001) and MC4 (p = 0.05). More statistical different was MT2 and less MT3. The linear parameter of Bd of the MT4 was the most different statistically between sex (p = 0.001). The results of the study will be useful in function of comparative anatomy, in veterinary clinical practice, in zoo archaeology and in the veterinary forensic investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article compares two types of external ear canal packing options, Spongostan and Silastic, for endoscopic ear surgery. The study found that there was no statistically significant difference in post-operative healing outcomes between the two dressings. Both dressings were considered viable options for endoscopic ear surgery. The study aimed to fill a gap in the literature regarding packing options for this type of surgery. However, the study has limitations and further research is needed to determine the optimal timing of leaving the Spongostan dressing in place. [Extracted from the article]

Introduction: To develop and validate a click-based mobile "Audiclick" app employing click noises for hearing assessments. Materials and Methods: This prospective comparative study compares the "AudiClick" app as a hearing screening tool to pure tone audiometry. Participants listened to sounds through wired earbud headphones that were connected to an Android or iOS device. Results: The study involved 110 participants aged between 18 to 80 years old. All degrees of hearing loss severity corresponds to pure tone average (p < 0.01) results. The app was also found to be effective at identifying hearing loss (80-99% sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy). Testretest reliability had also shown excellent ICC scores of 0.93. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that a mobile app using click sounds can be as efficient as pure tone audiometry for field screenings, while being more cost-effective and easier to develop. The Andean white ear opossum (Didelphis pernigra, Allen 1900) is one of the three species of the genus Didelphis reported in Colombia. Here we present a systematic review of D. pernigra in Colombia, with a geographical and altitudinal distribution hypothesis from the country. We reported geographic records and scientific available information of D. pernigra in 40 studies, 55.26 % of the available literature corresponded to local and regional inventories; 23.68 % of other documents were studies about mammal assemblages, while 21.05 % were specific studies about the species and the genus Didelphis in Colombia. We classified literature according to the following subcategories: natural history, diet, inventories, threats, reproduction, uses and perceptions. Most of the literature corresponded to detection in inventories (55.26 %), followed by natural history information (21.05 %) and threats (7.89 %). Research about diet, uses, perception and reproduction, had the lowest proportion with 5.26 %. Regarding distribution, geographic records ranged between 1060 and 3740 m across the three Andean ranges of Colombia. In general, little is known about the ecology or natural history of the species, efforts should be focused on filling the information gaps about natural history, and surveys should fill the distribution gaps along the Western and Central ranges of Colombia. The classical body ownership illusion, such as the rubber hand illusion, is achieved through appropriate proprioceptive displacement within temporal and spatial constraints that do not exceed the limits of proprioceptive flexibility. In the 2023 Best Illusion of the Year Contest, we introduced Buddha's ear illusion (BEI), which creates the illusion of owning a dramatically deformed earlobe through immediate visuotactile stimulation and seemingly challenges classical proprioceptive boundaries. The laboratory experiment examined the mechanics of this illusion, revealing a significant interaction between tactile earlobe pulling and visual miming that contributed to the enhanced perception of earlobe stretch. Importantly, 88% of the participants confirmed the illusory earlobe stretch (a rating of +4 or higher on a 7-point scale). More than half reported an earlobe descent of >10 cm within a 10-s visuotactile stimulation. The findings suggest that BEI operates on a distinct principle separate from proprioceptive modulation in contrast to classical ownership illusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe two new deep-sea species of bivalves of the genus Adontorhina that were found at a depth of 788–2532 m off the Kuril Islands and the southeastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula (Adontorhina inflata sp. nov.), as well as at a depth of 3210–3432 m in the Sea of Okhotsk and on the oceanic slope of the Kuril Islands (Adontorhina diaphana sp. nov.). Herein, we provide an expanded description of the amphi-Pacific Adontorhina cyclia, which is supplemented with new data on shell morphology, body anatomy, and distribution, based on the analysis of samples collected by 12 expeditions between 1949 and 2015 in various regions of the northwestern Pacific from the coast of Japan to the Bering Sea. The main feature distinguishing the new species from all other Adontorhina species is a unique sculpture of the prodissoconch consisting of thin folds and wrinkles of varying length, shape, and number. In addition , A. inflata sp. nov. differs from other Adontorhina species by having an obliquely ovate, strongly inflated shell with a poorly defined escutcheon and indistinct auricle; and A. diaphana sp. nov. is distinguished by having a subcircular shell with a long and strongly prominent auricle. A thorough study of the prodissoconch morphology of A. cyclia from the western and eastern Pacific, as well as Adontorhina sphaericosa and Adontorhina zelayi , showed that the sculpture of the prodissoconch in all species studied is unique and can be used as an important additional character for the identification and differentiation of Adontorhina species. Purpose: To evaluate the utility of supine roll test (SRT) and alternative positional tests, such as head-shaking test (HST), seated supine positioning test (SSPT), bow and lean test (BLT), and rapid axial roll test (RART) in determining the affected semicircular canal of horizontal semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (HSC-BPPV). Methods: In an observational cohort study, 553 patients diagnosed with HSCBPPV were divided into five groups in terms of different positional tests received: SRT group (n = 110), HST+ SRT (n = 112), BLT + SRT (n = 114), SSPT+SRT (n = 108) and RART+SRT (n = 109). The same method was used for the last four groups: The patients were first subjected to different alternative positional tests and then to SRT, and the nystagmus was observed separately to determine the affected side. The primary outcomes compared included the accuracy and sensitivity of these tests in the determination of the affected semicircular canal in HSC-BPPV. Results: Patients with nystagmus elicited by positional tests accounted for 84.99% (470/553). The elicitation rate of nystagmus of SRT was lowest, being 77.27% (85/110). The elicitation rate of nystagmus were higher in the test groups than in the control group, and RART+SRT group yielded the highest elicitation rate of nystagmus (95.41%, 104/109). Among the alternative positional tests, RART attained the highest elicitation rate of nystagmus (101/109, 92.66%). Comparison between alternative positional tests and SRT, RART and SRT showed obviously better agreement in determining the affected semicircular canal (85.45%, 96/109) and eliciting nystagmus (95.41%, Kappa = 0.642), but no difference was found in curative effect when the affected side was accurately determined (χ2 = 1.618, p = 0.655). Conclusion: All alternative positional tests are helpful for eliciting nystagmus in patients with HSC-BPPV, and the significant advantages of RART include highsensitivity in eliciting nystagmus and high accuracy in determining the affected semicircular canal, which provided objective support for the correct diagnosis of HSC-BPPV and the successful reduction of otolith. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are scientifically well established, but they rarely arrive in the daily lives of potential end-users. This could be in part because electroencephalography (EEG), a prevalent method to acquire brain activity for BCI operation, is considered too impractical to be applied in daily life of endusers with physical impairment as an assistive device. Hence, miniaturized EEG systems such as the cEEGrid have been developed. While they promise to be a step toward bridging the gap between BCI development, lab demonstrations, and home use, they still require further validation. Encouragingly, the cEEGrid has already demonstrated its ability to record visually and auditorily evoked eventrelated potentials (ERP), which are important as input signal for many BCIs. With this study, we aimed at evaluating the cEEGrid in the context of a BCI based on tactually evoked ERPs. To compare the cEEGrid with a conventional scalp EEG, we recorded brain activity with both systems simultaneously. Forty healthy participants were recruited to perform a P300 oddball task based on vibrotactile stimulation at four different positions. This tactile paradigm has been shown to be feasible for BCI repeatedly but has never been tested with the cEEGrid. We found distinct P300 deflections in the cEEGrid data, particularly at vertical bipolar channels. With an average of 63%, the cEEGrid classification accuracy was significantly above the chance level (25%) but significantly lower than the 81% reached with the EEG cap. Likewise, the P300 amplitude was significantly lower (cEEGrid R2-R7: 1.87 µV, Cap Cz: 3.53 µV). These results indicate that a tactile BCI using the cEEGrid could potentially be operated, albeit with lower efficiency. Additionally, participants' somatosensory sensitivity was assessed, but no correlation to the accuracy of either EEG system was shown. Our research contributes to the growing amount of literature comparing the cEEGrid to conventional EEG systems and provides first evidence that the tactile P300 can be recorded behind the ear. A BCI based on a thus simplified EEG system might be more readily accepted by potential end-users, provided the accuracy can be substantially increased, e.g., by training and improved classification. Background: Pott's Puffy tumor (PPT) is a complicated frontal sinusitis that is also described as frontal bone osteomyelitis and a localized sub periosteal abscess. Early diagnosis and immediate active treatment are necessary to prevent severe neurologic sequelae. Case Presentation: Here, we report on a case of Pott's puffy tumor in a previously healthy 13-year-old girl with a worsening headache and swelling of the frontal bone accompanied by vomiting and fever. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. A foreign body was discovered and removed via endoscopy which was then followed by 6 weeks of parenteral and enteral antibiotic therapy, resulting in resolution of all symptoms. Conclusion: A complete history in terms of trauma and insect bite or foreign body in the nose is paramount for a correct diagnosis, and performing a full examination of ear, nose and throat (ENT) to rule out a foreign body is advised. Objectives: To understand attentional preferences for normal and microtia ears. Methods: Eye‐tracking technology was used to characterize gaze preferences. A total of 71 participants viewed images of 5 patients with unilateral microtia. Profile images of patient faces and isolated ears including normal, microtia, and post‐reconstruction microtia ears were shown. Total time of fixation in predefined areas of interest (AOI) was measured. Inferential statistics were used to assess significance of fixation differences between AOIs within and between facial or auricular features. Results: The ear received most visual attention in lateral view of the face (1.91 s, 1.66–2.16 s) [mean, 95% CI], followed by features of the "central triangle"—the eyes (1.26 s, 1.06–1.46), nose (0.48 s, 0.38–0.58), and mouth (0.15 s, 0.15–0.20). In frontal view, microtia ears received less attention following surgical reconstruction (0.74 s vs. 0.4 s, p < 0.001). The concha was the most attended feature for both normal (2.97 s, 2.7–3.23) and reconstructed microtia ears (1.87 s, 1.61–2.13). Scars on reconstructed ears altered the typical visual scanpath. Conclusion: The ear is an attentional gaze landmark of the face. Attention to microtia ears, both pre‐ and post‐reconstruction, differs from gaze patterns of normal ears. The concha was the most attended to subunit of the ear. Attentional gaze may provide an unbiased method to determine what is important in reconstructive surgery. Mechanistic insight is achieved only when experiments are employed to test formal or computational models. Furthermore, in analogy to lesion studies, phantom perception may serve as a vehicle to understand the fundamental processing principles underlying healthy auditory perception. With a special focus on tinnitus-as the prime example of auditory phantom perception-we review recent work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, psychology and neuroscience. In particular, we discuss why everyone with tinnitus suffers from (at least hidden) hearing loss, but not everyone with hearing loss suffers from tinnitus. We argue that intrinsic neural noise is generated and amplified along the auditory pathway as a compensatory mechanism to restore normal hearing based on adaptive stochastic resonance. The neural noise increase can then be misinterpreted as auditory input and perceived as tinnitus. This mechanism can be formalized in the Bayesian brain framework, where the percept (posterior) assimilates a prior prediction (brain's expectations) and likelihood (bottom-up neural signal). A higher mean and lower variance (i.e. enhanced precision) of the likelihood shifts the posterior, evincing a misinterpretation of sensory evidence, which may be further confounded by plastic changes in the brain that underwrite prior predictions. Hence, two fundamental processing principles provide the most explanatory power for the emergence of auditory phantom perceptions: predictive coding as a top-down and adaptive stochastic resonance as a complementary bottom-up mechanism. We conclude that both principles also play a crucial role in healthy auditory perception. Finally, in the context of neuroscience-inspired artificial intelligence, both processing principles may serve to improve contemporary machine learning techniques.

Abstract Background Ménière’s disease is a chronic condition of the inner ear that causes vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. Its diagnosis relies on clinical criteria that are subjective and pure-tone audiometry results that are not specific. Its pathological substrate is endolymphatic hydrops. Its imaging was recently made possible by the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. This technique was primarily tested on 3 T. Our objective was to prove its feasibility using a 1.5 T magnet. Methods We conducted a prospective study including 30 patients who fulfilled the Bárány society criteria for Ménière’s disease. We performed the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence on all patients. We used it to look for and grade endolymphatic hydrops in the utricle, the saccule and the cochlear canal using the Kahn method. Results We found endolymphatic hydrops in all of the 30 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for Ménière’s disease. We had no false positives and only one false negative with a patient presenting with bilateral disease clinically but having endolymphatic hydrops only on one side. Thus, our correspondence rate between clinical and imaging findings was 97%. Conclusions It is possible to diagnose endolymphatic hydrops with the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence using a 1.5 T MRI machine. Since Ménière’s disease diagnosis is sometimes tricky, imaging endolymphatic hydrops can aid in the diagnosis when the clinical picture is incomplete. It also helps guide invasive treatment plans. Feasibility at 1.5 T ensures broader access to the late-enhanced 3D FLAIR sequence. Beyond the scope of Ménière’s disease, this sequence offers the possibility to better understand pressure-related inner ear diseases.

Our sense of hearing is mediated by cochlear hair cells, localized within the sensory epithelium called the organ of Corti. There are two types of hair cells in the cochlea, which are organized in one row of inner hair cells and three rows of outer hair cells. Each cochlea contains a few thousands of hair cells, and their survival is essential for our perception of sound because they are terminally differentiated and do not regenerate after insult. It is often desirable in hearing research to quantify the number of hair cells within cochlear samples, in both pathological conditions, and in response to treatment. However, the sheer number of cells along the cochlea makes manual quantification impractical. Machine learning can be used to overcome this challenge by automating the quantification process but requires a vast and diverse dataset for effective training. In this study, we present a large collection of annotated cochlear hair-cell datasets, labeled with commonly used hair-cell markers and imaged using various fluorescence microscopy techniques. The collection includes samples from mouse, human, pig and guinea pig cochlear tissue, from normal conditions and following in-vivo and in-vitro ototoxic drug application. The dataset includes over 90,000 hair cells, all of which have been manually identified and annotated as one of two cell types: inner hair cells and outer hair cells. This dataset is the result of a collaborative effort from multiple laboratories and has been carefully curated to represent a variety of imaging techniques. With suggested usage parameters and a well-described annotation procedure, this collection can facilitate the development of generalizable cochlear hair cell detection models or serve as a starting point for fine-tuning models for other analysis tasks. By providing this dataset, we aim to supply other groups within the hearing research community with the opportunity to develop their own tools with which to analyze cochlear imaging data more fully, accurately, and with greater ease.

ObjectivesThe objective of this study is to understand whether the hearing loss laterality in Menière's disease (MD) correlates with migraine symptoms laterality such as headache, neck stiffness, and otalgia.MethodsWe performed a retrospective review of prospectively obtained data on patients presenting between September 2015 and October 2021 with definite or probable MD. A custom-designed, comprehensive questionnaire was used to identify patients' migraine-related symptoms. The clinical and audiometric data were used to diagnose patients with definite or probable MD using criteria set by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.ResultsIn total, 113 patients with definite or probable MD were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 60 ± 15 years with no gender predominance (49.6% male and 50.4% female). A total of 57 (50%) patients were presented with headaches. Among the migraine headache cohort, headache and otalgia were on the same side as the MD ear affected by hearing loss. In addition, in patients who present with otalgia as the primary feature of headache, otalgia was more likely to be on the same side as the ear affected by the hearing loss.ConclusionsThe high prevalence of migraine symptoms on the same side of the ear affected by MD among this cohort could suggest a shared pathophysiology in both MD and migraine, possibly involving migraine-related changes in both the cochlea and vestibule.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most common sensory disability associated with human aging. Yet, there are no approved measures for preventing or treating this debilitating condition. With its slow progression, continuous and safe approaches are critical for ARHL treatment. Nicotinamide Riboside (NR), a NAD+ precursor, is well tolerated even for long-term use and is already shown effective in various disease models including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. It has also been beneficial against noise-induced hearing loss and in hearing loss associated with premature aging. However, its beneficial impact on ARHL is not known. Using two different wild-type mouse strains, we show that long-term NR administration prevents the progression of ARHL. Through transcriptomic and biochemical analysis, we find that NR administration restores age-associated reduction in cochlear NAD+ levels, upregulates biological pathways associated with synaptic transmission and PPAR signaling, and reduces the number of orphan ribbon synapses between afferent auditory neurons and inner hair cells. We also find that NR targets a novel pathway of lipid droplets in the cochlea by inducing the expression of CIDEC and PLIN1 proteins that are downstream of PPAR signaling and are key for lipid droplet growth. Taken together, our results demonstrate the therapeutic potential of NR treatment for ARHL and provide novel insights into its mechanism of action.

The evolutionary shift from a single-element ear, multi-element jaw to a multi-element ear, single-element jaw during the transition to crown mammals marks one of the most dramatic structural transformations in vertebrates. Research on this transformation has focused on mammalian middle-ear evolution, but a mandible comprising only the dentary is equally emblematic of this evolutionary radiation. Here, we show that the remarkably diverse jaw shapes of crown mammals are coupled with surprisingly stereotyped jaw stiffness. This strength-based morphofunctional regime has a genetic basis and allowed mammalian jaws to effectively resist deformation as they radiated into highly disparate forms with markedly distinct diets. The main functional consequences for the mandible of decoupling hearing and mastication were a trade-off between higher jaw stiffness versus decreased mechanical efficiency and speed compared with non-mammals. This fundamental and consequential shift in jaw form-function underpins the ecological and taxonomic diversification of crown mammals. IntroductionPatients with otitis media (OM) encounter significant functional hearing impairment with conductive, or a combined hearing loss and long-term sequelae involving impaired speech/language development in children, reduced academic achievement and irreversible disorders of middle and inner ear requiring a long time therapy and/or multiple surgeries. In its persistent chronic form, Otitis media (COM) can often only be treated by undergoing ear surgery for hearing restoration. The persistent inflammatory reaction plays a major role, often caused by multi-resistant pathogens in the ear. Herein, we present outcomes of patients implanted with currently the only FDA approved active Middle Ear Implant Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB), suffering from persistent COM.MethodsThe study enrolled 42 patients, treated by performing middle ear (ME) surgery to different extents and implanted with the VSB to various structures in the ME. Included were 17 children and 25 adults that had recurrent and/or persisting OM and significant hearing loss. Preoperative and postoperative patients' audiometric data were evaluated and the benefit with VSB assessed using the Glasgow Benefit Inventory for adults and pediatric cohorts. The microbial spectrum of pathogens was assessed before and after surgery, exploring the colonization of the otopathogens, as well as the intestinal microbiome from individually burdened patients.ResultsThe mean functional gain is 29.7 dB HL (range from 10 to 56.2 dB HL) with a significant improvement in speech intelligibility in quiet. Following VSB implantation, no significant differences in coupling were observed at low complication rates. Postoperatively patients showed significantly increased benefit with VSB compared to the untreated situation, including less otorrhea, pain, medical visits, and medication intake, with no recurrent OM and significant bacterial shift in otopathogens. The analysis of the intestinal microbiome displayed a high abundance of bacterial strains that might be linked to chronic and persistent inflammation.ConclusionsFunctional ear surgery including rehabilitation with a VSB in patients suffering from COM present to be safe and effective. The successful acceptance accompanied by the improved audiological performance resulted in significant benefit with VSB, with a shift in the ear pathogens and altered microbiome and thus is a great opportunity to be treated.

Introduction and aim of the study: Ear wax plays many roles in maintaining ear health, such as cleansing, shielding, and lubricating the external auditory canal. Sometimes, when earwax obstruction occurs, for example as a result of improper hygiene procedures (such as using cotton swabs), it can cause a number of disorders ranging from discomfort to even loss of hearing. In such cases, various methods can be used to remove the cerumen impaction. One of these and also the most commonly used, involves the usage of ear drops, which can contain different active substances (water-based compounds, oil-based compounds, a combination of oil and water-based compounds, and non-water, non-oil solutions). The aim of our study is to present current state of knowledge about effectiveness of various types of ear drops in wax cleaning. Material and methods: Our review is based on the analysis of materials collected in Pubmed”, „Google Scholar” and other scientific articles using keywords: „earwax”, cerumen impaction”, „cerumenolytics”, „ear drops”, „cerumen”, „earwax solvents”, „wax solvents”. Conclusions: Despite numerous studies, the Holy Grail has not been found among ear drops. The majority conducted studies did not show that any of the cerumenolitics were superior to the others in a statistically significant way. The only result that was statistically significant was the one showing a higher effectiveness of 2.5% sodium bicarbonate compared to docusate sodium. Further research is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
